UCLA kid gets tased at a library. It was a late night, he was asked to show ID. He didn't have ID. Was asked to leave...blah blah blah then gets tased.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A UCLA police officer shocked a student with a stun gun at a campus library after he refused repeated requests to show student identification and wouldn't leave, police said.

The student, Mostafa Tabatabainejad, was shocked Tuesday at about 11 p.m. as police did a routine check of student IDs at the University of California, Los Angeles Powell Library computer lab.

"This is a long-standing library policy to ensure the safety of students during the late-night hours," said UCLA Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein.

She said police tried to escort Tabatabainejad, 23, out of the library after he refused to provide identification. Tabatabainejad instead encouraged others at the library to join his resistance, and when a crowd began to gather, police used the stun gun on him, Greenstein said.

Tabatabainejad was arrested for resisting and obstructing a police officer and later released on his own recognizance. He declined to comment Wednesday night.

The incident was recorded on another student's camera phone and showed Tabatabainejad screaming while on the floor of the computer lab. It was the third incident in a month in which police behavior in the city was criticized after amateur video surfaced. The other two involved the Los Angeles Police Department.

Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams promised an investigation.

"The safety of our campus community is of paramount importance to me," Abrams said in a statement.

My political stances aside, I'm sort of interested in the fact that so many people whipped out their phones to document this. From a journalism POV...

Oh, and why would YouTube delete this? There's a bunch of other associated videos of tazings/police arrests? I don't use the site enough to know why.

Was he wearing a hoodie? That'll get you tased too.

CUGreekgirl 11-16-2006 08:46 PM

That video made me ill.

I think its ashame how people in uniform often abuse their power.

AlexMack 11-16-2006 09:02 PM

If I was a cop I'd have continued tazing him just for being a little bitch. Seriously. Shut up about the Patriot Act you little pussy. If you stand up and walk out with the nice policemen, you won't get tazered again.
Giant tool.

Drolefille 11-16-2006 10:19 PM

He was an ass for not following the rules: If you're at the library late at night, you must have a student ID. So they ask him to leave and he goes limp and becomes a greater ass. However, multiple tasings is just the cops being stupid. And didn't they tase him with cuffs on? Isn't that big no-no?

KillarneyRose 11-17-2006 07:40 AM

Aaaah, it's been awhile since I graduated college but I'm glad to see the egocentricity and delusions of entitlement in some students are still alive and well...

starang21 11-17-2006 09:16 AM

apparently, there are some conflicting stories on this issue.

i heard he was in the process of leaving when a cop pushed him, he responded by screaming "don't touch me", then he gets tazed.

LOL @ people expecting him to get up nicely after being tazed.

RU OX Alum 11-17-2006 09:50 AM

exactly, that cop should be fired, and everyone in the library or even still awake should be expelled, you know, to be fair

sdsuchelle 11-17-2006 09:58 AM

I dunno, I'd have to be there to understand the full situation.

Although I do have to say I was annoyed by him screaming THIS IS YOUR PATRIOT ACT!!!! Ugh shut the hell up.

GeekyPenguin 11-17-2006 11:21 AM

I'd like to see the cops be able to stand up after getting tased.

SigKapSweetie 11-17-2006 11:34 AM

I would've tazed him, too, for being an obnoxious tool.

squirrely girl 11-17-2006 11:39 AM

dude this is screwed up. i just don't see how a person could "resist" SOOOOOOOO much during an ID check at a school library to where they warranted being tazed...

My husband did. As training for his department, they are required to be tazed. Everyone in his department has gone through it. He says it sucks and does incapacitate you momentarily but you shake it off and get back to work.

Was he tazed 5 times in 6 minutes, or once to feel it?

starang21 11-17-2006 12:15 PM

cop = college student?

uhhh.......

Multiple times. Once to feel it and after that, you can go as long as you can do it or stop. Some guys were real macho men & kept asking for more while others stopped at 3 seconds & vowed to never do it again.

PhiMuAmberkins 11-17-2006 12:31 PM

That was incredibly disgusting. Yes, the kid should have followed the rules, yes he should have left when they told him too, but NO ONE deserves that kind of treatment and police brutality. The part that really got me was when the cops told the kid in the white shirt to back up or they would taze him too. So...when you try to stand up for other people, you are threatened with violence?

I'm so ashamed of this, but I'm glad someone caught it on video.

Rudey 11-17-2006 12:33 PM

Tasers aren't developed to deliver lasting pain. They incapacitate you for a second to a few seconds. You can get up afterwards, even if you're a teeny tiny student that chose not to follow the rules and create a whole situation where people like me laugh at you since they just saw your video.

I don't understand the patriot act reference - perhaps he's worried that his name is on the terrorist watch list?

Probably, being that he's an Iranian American and figured the cops profiled him, rather than tried to deal with his temper tantrum.

Umm that entire library is filled with Iranian Americans.

If the cops were profiling, they would have tasered the entire population.

That's beautiful. Seriously.

cutiepatootie 11-17-2006 02:25 PM

That is really shocking and completely messed up. If the rule has been in place for all this time to show ID (as a student he should of already have known that) and at that time of night then what was the big deal in resisting showing his ID? Unless he wasn't a student.....I don't know about the force of tazers....it looks inhumane but then again they were cops , be it campus security, though they had to inforce the rules and this guy was completely (out of bounds on his part) egging them on with his whole BS about the patriot act crap and forcing them to step in and take him out. They Should of gotten it over with by either dragging him away without it blowing up to what it became or forcing him to show the ID (which they tried unsuccessfully)....They should of done something productive on their parts to alliviate the situation and moved on without it becoming what it became.

Also because this was a safety issue... it was smart of UCLA police to check ID's ....i say this because it was on local news last night that Cal State Long Beach campus is having problems with some attacker attacking female students on their campus occuring during late night/early moring hours. Heck if you look suspicious and resist showing proper ID then guess what they were well in their duty to enforce whatever consequence need be ( tazers) to get his sorry butt out of the library. He was just the dumb ass to make it what it became. It was not profiling ....dumb ass tried to be all liberal and envoking some patriot act to further his cause/stance of stupidity!

FHwku 11-17-2006 03:12 PM

he was screaming at the top of his lungs in the library.

i would've tazed him just for that.

"here's your Patriot Act, here's your fucking abuse of power!"

that would've been another taze.

so...you just got tazed a couple times, and you're done screaming like a demon. what next? he decides it's a good time to go limp, saying that he would leave, but won't stand up. (officer: "stand up!" tazed guy:"fuck off!")

so sidelines guy apparently decides now is a good time to give a civil rights speech, "this is about abuse of authority..."

i would've tazed him, but i'm an asshole. i've seen small children act the same way in a store. they throw the same tantrum, they scream, they go limp, and everybody wants their parents to just drag them out. you hope mom just takes the kid out of the store, and not spank them in public. Mostafa Tabatabainejad, 23, got spanked.

the kid in the store is a lil' kid though.

RU OX Alum 11-17-2006 03:22 PM

yeah....campus security has too much power...actully, everyone in that video is completely useless as a human being

DolphinChicaDDD 11-17-2006 03:26 PM

I tried to watch and it made me want to puke. Not from the tazer, I didn't get the far...from the begining Blair Witch like camera.

_Opi_ 11-17-2006 03:30 PM

Being tazed that many times, that's borderline torture.

They could've just dragged him out. That would have been using less force.

Since when did using a tazer become an only option?

I would think they'd just pick him up after tazing his ass. I don't think they're supposed to use it to "Punish" someone, it's to incapacitate them so they don't fight and you can arrest them...or run away.

--Bobby remember that time you got arrested in westwood for masturbating on a homeless man?

starang21 11-17-2006 05:59 PM

you people realize he already said he was leaving prior to him being tazed?

My neighbor is a cop (we call him "Cop-Neighbor" ;) ) told us the same thing. He says that they went through this in training so that if they ever use the taser they can relate to the jury during trial what it is like to be hit. He still has a small burn mark from his (I think he has been on the job for 2 years - maybe 3 now).

We were watching some stupid redneck funny home videos (is it Country Fried Videos? Something like that on CMT I think...) -- anyways, it shows a cop who is supposed to be hit in the chest - instead the guy using the taser misses & hits his groin. My husband was almost in tears watching it, but we were laughing none-the-less.

But this has zero to do with the topic at hand - just reading this thread reminded me of that video.

Soldier on...
