Food Networks - Loves and Hates
Since our This and That was getting a bit dramatic, post your FN loves and hates here and argue about it if you like :p
My personal loves: Rachel Ray, Iron Chef America, Good Eats with Alton Brown, Cat Cora, Food Network Challenges, Iron Chef Japan, ALTON BROWN, Unwrapped, Ham on the Street is fun too. Oh yeah and ALTON BROWN! :D Hates: Giada, Emeril, any cooking show besides Rachel Ray (at this point), The Dean Brothers... and the fact that if I watch a show on Friday, it will be replayed 12 times before Sunday evening when real programming seems to start back up again. |
LOVES: - 30 Minute Meals, Everyday Italian, Paula Dean, Michael Chiarello (sp?), Boy Meets Grill with Bobby Flay, and Iron Chef (the original)
HATES: - Any show with Emeril, that obnoxious semi-homemade lady, Barefoot Contessa (everytime I hear her laugh I want to poke a fork in my eye), Alton Brown, Tyler Florence, The Best Of, Unwrapped |
I don't like the Best of____ either, or the Secret Life of___. Unwrapped is best around the holidays I think. mmmm whipped cream and pie
And darn me for adding an S to Food Network... |
Loves:
30 Minute Meals, All American Festivals, Barefoot Contessa, The Best Of, Everyday Italian, Food 911, Food Finds, Good Eats with Alton Brown, Iron Chef (both), Molto Mario, Paula's Home Cooking, Rachael Ray's Tasty Travels, The Secret Life Of, Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee (I can't help it, I love her!), Throwdown with Bobby Flay, & Unwrapped. Hates: $40 a Day (if I have to watch that bitch happily undertip another server in the US I might seek & destroy), Emeril Live, The Essence of Emeril, How To Boil Water, The Hungry Detective, Paula's Party, Road Tasted, Roker on the Road, & Wolfgang Puck's Cooking Class. My freshman year of college I moved to Louisville & they had the Food Network. I was obsessed. My roommate wondered how I could watch it & never be hungry! When I moved back home, I discovered that my local cable service had included the Food Network while I was gone! I've been hoooked ever since. A little more than 50% of my TV watching is comprised of Food Network...and it has been for almost 7 years now. |
Oooh I forgot Throwdown! I like that :D
|
love: alton brown. I love the technical aspect.
hate: anything emeril. |
Hate Rachel Ray. The EVOO thing grates on my nerves.
|
All right, here we go:
LOVE: Rach, 30 Minute Meals (because they turn out ab fab, I have a bunch of her cookbooks and I swear by them), IC:A, Cat Cora, Food Network Challenges, Unwrapped, any show that features junk food, Behind the Bash. Don't Like: Alton Brown, Emeril (oh god-unless you're Drolefille), Giada's mouth, Bobby Flay (I think he's kind of arrogant), Tyler Florence, boring shows, Paula Dean and her sons (I've heard in real life they're obnoxious little shits!). I'm pretty apathetic about the rest because I don't watch it. Let's talk about food we've made by watching Food Network. My favourite dish ever is a recipe I adapted from Rachael. She makes a giant pot of macaroni with chicken and broccoli. I stole the sauce recipe and made the rest up. It's ziti in a spicy cheddar cheese sauce with andouille, peppers and mushrooms. I've also learnt how to make a quick chicken parm, which I do gluten free for my mum with fried polenta. I've learnt to love polenta via Rach because frying it makes it gorgeous. We adapted a pizza recipe from one of her books and I used broccoli, goats cheese and roasted red peppers. That was fabulous. I know how to season everything well, what spices and herbs go well with different food, crushing garlic is a total blast and I really want a good set of knives for christmas. I am a fangirl-I'm ashamed to admit it but I am. Mostly because of the food, her personality grates on me too. I cringe watching Inside Dish and seeing the celebs trying to tolerate her. |
Yay. Sometimes her voice drives me nuts, but generally Rachel is awesome.
(So... you don't like Emeril unless he's me?) ETA: wait... is this a Limit i may have Reached? :D |
Ok time for me to jump in now!
Loves: Alton Brown (love good eats and loved feasting on asphalt even more!), Ham on the street, Original IC, Paula Dean, The Naked Chef, some of the competitions and I like the food from Boy meets Grill but don't like Bobby Flay Like: Emeril Live sometimes, Party Line with the Hearty Boys, Easy Entertaining, Molto Mario sometimes Hate: Giada (too skinny to be doing ANYTHING food related), Bobby Flay (seems like a jerk to me), Semi-homemade, Cat Cora (same as bobby), How to Boil Water, and anything with Rachel Ray...I just can't stand her! I find her soooo annoying and don't even get me started on EVOO!!!!!!!! |
Ok, so I bought the Naked Chef's cookbook. And the stuff in there is wayyyy to complex for me. I thought it was supposed to be NAKED!
I'm a real newbie to cooking. And I want RR's cookbooks because I think they'll suit my skills. :( It was at TJMaxx. |

ROFLMFAO! And all this time I thought I was the only person cringing when she tipped someone $1.25 for her dinner. I keep yelling at the TV, "You CHEAP bitch! Put a damn $5 on there at least!" |
Emeril is the DEVIL. Why is he always on? Alton is the best!
|

I read somewhere I can't remember where, but the people who serve her are paid and tipped very well. She is just working off what the norm % is. And it's sad to say that as a former bartender, her on-show tips are the norms and not the exception |
People can really be cheap bastards. I can understand being upset over lousy service but if someone has done a good to excellent service, they deserve to get a damn good tip.
|
The only time I paid attention to what her tips workout to be it was 15%. Not fantastic, but not crap either.

<crash>
Likes: Everyday Italian, Iron Chef (both America and the original), Easy Entertaining with Michael Chiarello, anything Alton Brown. Hates: I'm with the consensus on Emeril. He's gone too Hollywood for me. Paula Deen: her southern accent just grates on me. Barefoot Contessa: Another voice that grates on me. She sounds like she's whining all the time. Rachael Ray: the next time I hear "EVOO" or "Yum-O", I want to shove a bottle of that EVOO down her throat. </crash> Didn't realize I was posting in the Sigma Kappa forum! |
Crash away, this is not a Stabby thread :p
Emeril sucks. His food is unrealistic and he falls into the "this would take 5 hours but I did it in 10 minutes" trap that I HATE. |
I always enjoyed The Naked Chef Jamie Oliver but I have one of his cookbooks & most of his stuff is very complicated.
|
I know! Plus, if I ever served "Duckling Breast" I think I'd be beaten.
Who eats baby birds? /likes veal //and lamb |
Oh, Jamie Oliver ROCKS in my book! I have two of his cookbooks (The Naked Chef Takes Off and Happy Days with the Naked Chef) and found nothing complicated about them. I've cooked several dishes of his without problem.
I also have two of Emeril's cookbooks (thanks to an inheritance from my grandmother) and find those complicated. I live in NOLA and have never eaten at his restaurants. I doubt I'll ever have the chance. They seem too touristy to me. |
I did eat at his fishhouse in Las Vegas inside the MGM Grand. It was surprisingly really good. I had pecan crusted red snapper w/a topping of showstring potatoes in this yummy sauce.
I have also eaten at Mesa Grill (Bobby Flay's restaurant) inside Caesars Palace. Absolutely delicious! Pricey but worth it. |
I'd love to eat at one of those restaurants even if I'm not a personal fan, I bet the food is amazing :D
|
LOVE Paula Dean and her sons, the Good Eats guy, Iron Chef (original), Bobby Flay, and the red-headed Italian guy?? :D
HATE Barefoot Contessa and the big-headed Italian woman, Rachel Ray, Jamie Oliver and Emeril I agree with ragtimerose that Emeril has gone too Hollywood, and I think Oliver used to be better "back in the day" as well. |
I bought Express Lane Meals by Rachael Ray yesterday and I'm psyched to get it. It's the most practical book she's come out with yet...she lists her usual pantry items and then the recipes give you the ingredients you can buy and get through the express lane with at the supermarket.
And my mother told me she got the 2,4,6,8 book for me for christmas. Great surprise mum :D |
I've never really watched Food Network. I don't suppose they have any vegetarian cooking shows...
|
I like Paula and her sons's shows. I think the accents are great. Barefoot Contesa is kind of snooting but I occasionally watch her. I don't understand why so many people hate Giada. I always want to have what she cooks and she seems nice.
|
what is emeril's ethnicity?
|
I believe he's Italian, but I'm just basing that on his last name. Doing a search...
ETA: Nope, I was wrong. According to Wikipedia he's of Portugese and Quebecois descent. |

I like Giada's show. I also like Paula Deen.
Barefoot Contessa's show is blah, and she seems snobby IMO. |

Bumping this thread back up. What do you guys think of Ace of Cakes?? I love it...
Short of that, there's not a whole lot on FN that I don't like... Rachel Ray is a complete twit, we all know that.... Alton Brown is the Bill Nye of FN, and he kind of sucks (although he's not as bad on Iron Chef America)... and Paula Dean...OOOHHH Paula...Not a bad person, I'm sure, but when I watch her cook, the only thing I can think to myself is "Oh Paula, why go through all the trouble to cook that crap when I could just take the easy route and inject all that lard straight into my veins??"... Ya know?? Oh, and I could do without barefoot contessa or whoever. Does anyone else miss East Meets West with Ming Tsi (sp?)???? I loved this show!!!!! |
I also miss Ming Tsai. A long long long time ago, Tommy Tang used to do a show with all Thai cooking. I loved it but it was short-lived. Boo!
|
Okay, I know it's not actually on Food Network, but I hate Take Home Chef on TLC. Even the chef's cute Aussie accent can't reverse the overall suckitude of the show.
|
I hate it too. I want to like it because it seems like a cool idea but alas it fails :(
I can't wait for Next food network star because Top Chef's just pissing me off! Oh, and I love me some food network challenges! |

Also, major LOLZ at his little poem. What the hell was that? Please...more food network challenges. Those keep me entertained. |
