I'm the exception to the rule, I try to influence those around me to vote for the candidates I like. Then I complain when my candidates don't get voted in. Next year, next year I will vote!

Go Figure!

Me too.

^^^ me three. Not like mine will matter much. All of my lovely moderate-to-liberal votes in a highly conservative state. Blah.

Absentee voting is a great thing. No lines and no stinky voting booths! Our Junior Senator is up for re-election and he faces a feisty Republican candidate this year. Every vote counts.

Today I'll be sign waving for a HS classmate running for the State House!

KSigkid 11-05-2006 04:09 PM

I'm running down to the local town hall on Tuesday when I get a chance. I'll be glad when I stop getting these annoying mailings.

Right, because one needs to be an American citizen in order to vote. One shouldn't be so quick to use the rolling eyes smiley.

Hahahahahha...PWNED!

AUDeltaGam 11-05-2006 04:34 PM

Already voted by absentee ballot :)

aephi alum 11-05-2006 05:33 PM

I miss being able to vote by absentee ballot. And my state doesn't allow early voting.

I will probably vote before work. If I leave it for after work, it's a guarantee that I'll get stuck late at the office and not make it to my polling place before it closes...

DolphinChicaDDD 11-05-2006 06:00 PM

Its going to be a bit harder for me to vote this year, but I'm still gonna vote. I used to vote absentee, and my polling place was the school I worked. Now I'm gonna have to wake up early to vote before work/vacation.

Glad to see that you will be using your full rights of citizenship when you are able to.

Not that it matters here all that much, but I was unaware of your status prior to this.

cutiepatootie 11-05-2006 07:15 PM

I absentee voted already. I just want election day to get here so my phone doesnt ring every 5 seconds with a recorded political message or my mail box overstuffed with ads from campaigns

Well someone's been splashing my personal information around the board so I figured everyone would know by now. My mum is voting Tuesday and I know she's voting democrat straight across the board which makes me happy. I'm stupid, I have all the paperwork filled out, I just don't have the passport photos done. If I get those taken, I can send in my application and have my citizenship by next year.

Voting the same way here.

BTB: If you are a member of AAA, you can get photos done at no charge.

Ooh, really? Nice! Thanks for letting me know. Also thanks for voting blue!

cutie_cat_4ever 11-05-2006 09:56 PM

I'm definitely voting, but I'm disappointed my bf he's not gonna vote because he said he doesn't want to involve in politics and his vote won't count anyway....

But to me, voting is more than exercising your right, it's paying respect to the soldiers and everyone who fought for the very existance of this country. No matter what side you're on, everyone should vote. :)

Not only that, but I do it to pay respect to my mother, relatives, and all those who came from countries that didn't allow their citizens to vote.

Sister Havana 11-05-2006 10:47 PM

Damn straight I'm voting. There is so much at stake this year...

I totally agree. I would rather someone shows up at the polls, and doesn't vote for anyone than sit back on their lazy behinds and complain.

I haven't missed an election day since I was able to vote. If you count campaigning, I haven't missed one since I was five years old!

Yes!!!
And so much more.

And votes do count. All votes count. We have seen that too many times in the past few years.

And Go Blue!!!! In more ways than one.

Ditto. My great-grandmother was a sufragette. My great aunt was once the President of the Michigan and Virginia League of Women Voters. My grandmother was President of the Detroit League and my mom was the President of the Warren (MI) League. If I didn't vote, they'd probably haunt me forever. There have been tiny little elections where I was voter #16 at my precinct at 6 pm in the evening. That's just sad. But, I always vote.

Political mailings I can handle, but I've had 12 anti-Jennifer Granholm recorded phone messages this weekend alone. I'm sick of it.

GeekyPenguin 11-05-2006 11:45 PM

I vote absentee so I get all my calls at my mom and dad's house - I'm happy to let them deal with it. :)

RU OX Alum 11-06-2006 01:05 PM

I'm going to vote for everything on the ballot because I feel like it is my duty, and I tried to be informed, but...I don't know who I'm going to vote for in the u.s. senate race. There are three candidates that I know of, I don't like color coded politics.

aephi alum 11-06-2006 02:15 PM

I just realized that I haven't received one political phone call. Maybe that's the advantage of VoIP?

However, I could wallpaper my office with the political mailings I've received. Hey Ned Lamont -- save a tree, willya??

AGDee 11-07-2006 07:31 AM

Up earlier than usual and heading out to vote before work. I hope the lines aren't too long, but I do have an awesome boss who says "If you need to be late because you're voting, that's ok".

KSigkid 11-07-2006 10:13 AM

I got up early to vote before work - it was just me and the old ladies volunteering for the day. It's definitely a different atmosphere than voting in Boston; plus I didn't have to deal with any campaigners at that hour.

A U.S. Rep race will be interesting, but Lieberman has opened up a solid lead on Lamont, and the Governor's race was over months ago, so it shouldn't be too exciting around here. I'm interested to see the results of the MA Governor's race though, to see if it turns out to be a runaway for Patrick.

OrchidAlum 11-07-2006 11:52 AM

There was a decent crowd when I went to vote this morning, but the volunteers moved things along very quickly. However, I didn't get my "I voted" sticker. :(

Sticker aside, I'm hoping that this will be the first election where the person I voted for actually wins! :p

jubilance1922 11-07-2006 12:07 PM

I early voted last week. :)

RU OX Alum 11-07-2006 12:15 PM

I voted no on all three proposed ammendents to the VA constitution. Churches should not be run for profit.

What were the proposed amendments?

ETA: Never mind. I found them online.

FWIW, the amendment about churches had nothing to do with being run for profit -- it was whether churches can be incorporated. (To be more clear, it was whether the language in the Va Constitution prohibiting incorporation of churches should be removed since the courts have already declared it unconstitutional under the federal Constitution. It's a clean-up amendment.)

All that incorporation means is that a church is considered a legal entity in and of itself -- able to buy or sell property in its own name, for example -- rather than as an association of people. One major difference has to do with legal liability. A corporation can be sued, but the shareholders in a corporation (or members of a non-profit corporation) cannot be forced to use their own assets to satisfy a judgment in a lawsuit. If the church is an unincorporated association, all members of the association might be held individually liable for any judgment against the association, unless Va law has some other protection for them.

Incorporation of churches is no different from incorporation of any other non-profits, including fraternities. In fact, church "law" in the Presbyterian Church requires congregations to be incorporated unless state law forbids incorporation of religious societies. I imagine the case is similar in some other denominations.

Peaches-n-Cream 11-07-2006 04:44 PM

I will go vote later. Most people in my polling place vote when the polls open or after dinner. I will try to avoid the crowds by going before dinner.

wrigley 11-07-2006 05:20 PM

I voted and got my sticker.

Sister Havana 11-07-2006 05:44 PM

I voted around 2:15 and am proudly wearing my sticker. :D I was voter #187 in my precinct.

SC Governor Sanford turned away at the polls

Do most states require bringing the voter registration card? Here in Hawaii we just have to show valid Government picture ID.

AZ-AlphaXi 11-07-2006 06:29 PM

I voted on the way to work this morning ... unfortunately the optical vote reader was jammed ... some yahoo had come in first thing and tried to load in his early mail in ballot before the poll workers could stop him :-(

so they put my ballot in the side of the machine and said it would be counted later !!

TrueBlueKappa 11-07-2006 06:36 PM

I voted after work and am proudly wearing my sticker! :D

I have never had to show any type of ID in NY. I just tell them my name, sign the form, and step into the booth.
