Neil Patrick Harris aka "Doogie Howser, MD" is Gay

Am I always the last to know? --Senusret I

Neil Patrick Harris is gay – and wants to quell recent reports that he had denied it. The actor tells PEOPLE exclusively:

"The public eye has always been kind to me, and until recently I have been able to live a pretty normal life. Now it seems there is speculation and interest in my private life and relationships.

"So, rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."

I wasn't surprised when Lance Bass outed himself.

I was definitely surprised when someone else outed Chad Allen.

Not really sure about this one, but this kinda explains why he hasn't been romantically linked to anyone. I can't recall ever seeing him photographed with women. Now I know why.

Senusret I 11-03-2006 10:04 PM

I had a huge crush on Chad Allen in the 80s/90s.

Now that I could have him, I don't want him anymore.

jitterbug13 11-03-2006 10:43 PM

I thought he was married.

And now it won't be convincing seeing him play Barney the playboy on "How I Met Your Mother".

ISUKappa 11-03-2006 10:58 PM

I feel like I knew this a while ago. I think the stint in Cabaret tipped me off.

SoCalGirl 11-03-2006 11:26 PM

My first reaction was "shocking" But then I was like, "Wait, seriously?" I'll still love him as my favorite teen doctor and as Barney the playboy on How I Met Your Mother. His role (as himself) in Harold and Kumar was hilarious too. :D

Gina1201 11-03-2006 11:31 PM

Interesting. I never would have guessed him or TR Knight.

shinerbock 11-03-2006 11:57 PM

Not NPH! man he used to be cool.

BetteDavisEyes 11-04-2006 12:07 AM

My hubby just told me like 5 minutes ago. The first place I checked was GC b/c I'm always the last to know about this kind of stuff.
I'm still surprised by this one.

Now I'm waiting to hear if and when we'll ever find out about Kevin Spacey. There's a guy who's never linked to any women, has persistant rumors run rampant about his sexuality, yet I still don't believe he's gay.

That is utterly ridiculous that your opinion of him completely changed because of his sexual orientation.

That said, when did this become news... I mean new news? I've known this for a while now it seems.

shinerbock 11-04-2006 02:41 AM

I was kidding, it was a Harold and Kumar-ish reference. That being said, I can't really say I think homosexuality is "cool"

When I saw him in Cabaret when I was in NY a couple of years, I was sure at that time.

epchick 11-04-2006 03:26 AM

For some reason, this doesn't surprise me

SoCalGirl 11-04-2006 04:23 AM

He was in Rent too. I've never seen the show or the movie. Was his character gay in Rent? I know he was the guy that wears the striped sweater.

If you're talking about the striped scarf...that's Mark, who's one of the show's only non-gay/bi characters.

DaffyKD

What role did he play in Cabaret?

xo_kathy 11-04-2006 01:35 PM

The Emcee I think.

carnation 11-04-2006 02:45 PM

Oooh, okay. A lot of people said that about Joel Grey even in the fifties when he played the Emcee on stage but he's been married to the same woman forever and has kids. But I can't imagine Doogie Howser prancing around in that role, lol.

KillarneyRose 11-04-2006 03:22 PM

Wasn't NPH on an episode of Will and Grace a few years back where he played a "cured" gay man who Jack (I think that's his name; Will and Grace's gay buddy) had a crush on?

jadis96 11-04-2006 04:02 PM

Am I the only one who thought when they saw this "is this new to anyone?" I just assumed after seeing a few interviews and such that he was. It seemed apparent to me knowing the emcee role in Caberet.

BTW the emcee in the production he was in (the Roundabout Theatre Company) was a bit racier then the one Joel Grey played in the 50's.

Re:Emcee role in Caberet

I don't know about you, but I ALWAYS get a gay vibe from the actor playing the emcee, whether he bats for the team or not. The emcee is SUPPOSED to give of a "gay vibe."

Yes he sure was.

My friend told me and my reply was, "And in other news, the Pope is Catholic." Same thing I said when Lance Bass decided to come out.

Thanks for helping me not feel nuts. :)

Yes he did.... and now that episode looks even funnier in light of this revelation.

moe.ron 11-05-2006 06:44 AM

Old news, knew about it last year.

cutiepatootie 11-05-2006 11:24 AM

for some reason that just doesn't phase me in the least. I loved doogie , but it just doesn't seem to shock me.

AlexMack 11-05-2006 12:55 PM

I was sad when Lance came out in a 'well there goes my childhood' kind of way. However, I never watched Doogie Howser so...good for him for coming out. Countdown to Clay Gaiken!

Sistermadly 11-05-2006 04:35 PM

"Dude, what's the deal with Neil Patrick Harris? Why is he so horny?" -- Harold, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle

Cabaret premiered in 1966. Joel Gray was in the original cast.

True, or at least a very ambiguous vibe.

Maybe he's the real life Troy McClure - a fetish so weird, not quelling the rumours he's gay is preferable to people finding out what the real deal is.

Well just because you play a role of a gay - or sexually ambiguous - character doesn't mean you are.

And, while the Roundabout's version may seem racier, for 1966 the Emcee was pretty edgy. Probably more so because they didn't have so much gay/bisexual culture out in the open.

And thank you, MystiCat! I was like 50s?!?:p

DSTCHAOS 11-06-2006 05:48 PM

I always thought he was gay.

My mind completely went into the gutter when I read this. I blame the thread topic.

madmax 11-06-2006 06:30 PM

How stupid of me. I forgot to out Doogie Howser on the Lance Bass thread. He is so obvious. I also forgot to mention almost every constestant on You think you can Dance especially the winner and anyone over 12 that still uses the name Benji. I think Howie Mandell might be in the closet.

Drolefille 11-06-2006 07:28 PM

Howie's just OCD.

You're right! I'm aging myself!:p

Boy, could he sing--especially in "Tomorrow Belongs to Me".

Rudey 11-07-2006 12:15 AM

This is almost as shocking as when half of UCLA's basketball team came out of the closet last year.

I sat next to Joel Gray on the subway last year! I had no intention of sitting down that ride, but when I got one I saw him sitting there and there was no one next to him, so I sat. He was reading a script. This was post-seeing him in Wicked, too. I so wanted to say somehting but I just felt dumb; I just wanted to be close to his "greatness" - I love him!
