ADPiZXalum's little sister's recruitment thread

Alrighty, so she's not REALLY my little sister, but the close enough!! We'll call her "Sandy" for now. Ok, so Sandy will be rushing at a smaller school in the eastern half of the country that has 6 sororities. She is a legacy to one and her first cousin is a current member of another (at the same school where she is rushing).

Let's see, how to name these sororities........................................ .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ....................ok, I'm going to go with counties in Texas... kind of lame, sorry.

McLennan
Harris
Bexar
Travis
Tarrant
Live Oak

LOVEinZTA 11-02-2006 09:28 AM

I find this hilarious, as I've lived in THREE of the six counties you chose in the past YEAR AND A HALF alone! But I have to stick with the best, go Travis! haha

adpiucf 11-02-2006 12:35 PM

I live in Harris County! Good luck to your friend-- no matter what county she "resides" in for the long term, I hope she has fun meeting new friends and getting to learn about Greek Life!

tunatartare 11-02-2006 12:52 PM

Is she rushing this semester or next? November seems really late to do rush.

Rush is in January. Over Christmas break we are going shopping and I'm going to be her "coach". :) I'm really excited for her.

Not that I'm biased or anything, ;) but I totally love your choice in name for the little sister! :D :D

lovethedove 11-02-2006 07:08 PM

Oh man I'm torn. I'm from Travis county and live in Bexar county!!!!

Haha, I didn't even put my home town county on there! Baylor is in McLennan and I lived and taught in Live Oak for a while.
And as far as the "Sandy" thing, I just had a song from Grease in my head and so I picked it!

How can you stick with the best when El Paso county isn't even on the list!!

:D :D :D Yeah right...who am I kidding!! lmfao....but yeah never EVER heard of those counties and i lived in TX my whole 21 years of life.

ADPiZXalum 11-02-2006 10:00 PM

you've never heard of any of those 6 counties?! The state capital is in one of them...

Nope I haven't. Harris County sounds familiar...but Texas is a big state and El Paso is far away from every other big city in Texas. I've been to other cities in Texas, I just don't pay attention to the counties they are in.

LOVEinZTA 11-02-2006 10:35 PM

um, the capitol? let's try THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TEAM is in one of them. haha, sorry, i really couldn't help myself.

lovethedove 11-02-2006 11:50 PM

oh Travis county

I'm in major need of an Austin fix....I miss home. :(
(sorry, just had to add that)

Yea, and that team's red headed step child resides in McLennan County. :D

Harris--Houston
Bexar--San Antonio
LIve Oak--country county in S. Texas
Tarrant--isn't this Fort Worth? I don't even remember myself
Travis--Austin
McLennan-Waco

So some more info for "Sandy". She is a legacy to Travis, plus has many friends at her school who are IN Travis, including next year's Panhellenic RVP. Her cousin is in McLennan and she knows many of her friends and really loves this chapter to begin with. I have a feeling we'll have a nice little competition going here. She is really a great girl, I think they will ALL fight over her! I can't wait to go shopping!

Stef the Pef 11-04-2006 01:44 AM

Not gonna lie...since I'm still here...GO MCLENNAN!

And good luck to your sister, ZXAlum!

Oh good, I was worried that we might not be sharing love for ALL the Big XII schools in Texas (although I could TOTALLY do without those guys South East of BU!!!) I have a UT sweatshirt actually. My crazy grandmother who lives in California bought it for me at a thrift store because it said "Texas." It was also in burnt orange. She was so excited about it though so I had to act thrilled. I wear it all the time though, it's fun to see the looks I get. Speaking of funny looks about Texas here in Montreal, this guy was trying to pass me on a motorcycle yesterday and he was looking at my front license plate (texas tags!) and the car in front of him stopped. He looked up just in time, slammed on the brakes/whatever but he still hit the car. He was completely ok but I about died laughing at him.

aggieAXO 11-08-2006 10:26 AM

No love for Brazos county? What a bummer.

I grew up in Bexar county and now live in Travis county.

Good luck to your sister.

hahaha amen to that! but let's not even get the not-so-rivalry started, that's not for another 2 weeks!

ADPiZXalum 12-09-2006 04:58 PM

Well, Sandy told me yesterday that they had a fall recruitment round (at Baylor we called it Fall Parties) like an open house type deal. Her initial reactions are as follows:

Harris: Absolute favorite, says the girls are amazing and she LOVES them. Loves everything about them.
Travis: (one she's a legacy to) Also loves this house...always good to be a legacy to a house you love. She has a lot of friends here who are upperclassmen and feels like she would fit in here just as well as Harris.
McLennan This is the only house she has a rec for and as I said before her cousin is a member. Her initial response, from what she'd seen on campus and from her cousin was very good, however she doesn't feel as comfortable here as in Harris and Travis. She liked all the girls a lot, but didn't feel like they were as interested in her as her top 2. I think she is still open to this house though.
Bexar, Tarrant, and Live Oak: She said the same thing about these three. Very nice girls, seem like they have a lot to offer, but doesn't fit in as well with them as the others.

I can't wait!! We're going shopping and going through some "coaching" when I get back to Texas for Christmas. YAH HOO!

MSKKG 12-09-2006 05:02 PM

She doesn't have a rec to her legacy chapter?!? She only has a rec to one GLO on campus? I guess my Ole Miss roots are showing, but YIKES!

They are :) ADPiZXalum didn't specify exactly where the chaper was except for in the "East" and there are schools, primarily in the Northeast, where recs are virtually unheard of. I have friends at schools in CT and NY where they'll only get two or three recs out of 500 PNMs, most of these were from legacies. I could see how that, if ADPi's lil sis's legacy connection were deceased that she wouldn't feel comfortable contacting an alumnae association for a rec. That could be looked at as "weird" at some schools, as in, "why is this random alum writing a rec for someone she doesn't personally know?" At a lot of northern schools, having a strong personal connection (friend, relative) for recommendations is highly emphasized.

MSKKG 12-09-2006 06:41 PM

Now that I've recovered from the "vay-puhs" brought on by learning of ADPiZXalum's little sister's rec situation, I was able to comprehend your most plausible explanation, AChiOSnap. How's that for some Ole Miss roots? :D

LOL! I think we all get a dose of culture shock every year on GC when we read about how different schools do recruitment...whether it's the traditional southern school where ladies spend $1000 on recruitment wardrobes and scramble to get 19 rec letters, or the the liberal, nontraditional Northern colleges where ladies go through with flip flops and ripped up Urban Outfitters pants and Paul Frank t-shirts.

I'll tell you that I'm sure my Northern roots showed when I once told a story here about how one of my sorority sisters was annoyed when she received a recommendation letter for a PNM... she said "Well isn't this a little presumptuous. I think I can pick my own sorority sisters!"

Being an experienced GCer, I quickly set her straight...but she had never SEEN a recommendation letter before! They're certainly not common at some Northern/Midwestern schools, that's for sure :)

That's for sure. We're all certain how we do things is how it's supposed to be done and are surprised when we find out things run just as smoothly done another way. Remember that story about the blind men describing an elephant? They all had valid, if incomplete, descriptions depending on what part of the elephant they were touching. That's kind of what the differences in recruitment procedures are like (and we won't even get into the fraternities' way of doing things!).

alum 12-09-2006 09:49 PM

It seems like recruitment is a reflection of the school atmosphere. I advise a chapter where the girls (actives and rushees)are wearing designer jeans to the first two rounds. According to my D, no girls wear jeans ever for anything at her school and certainly not for formal recruitment.

I've never seen one....I've heard of them of course but I've never seen one...I'm not sure that anyone from my old school would have known what one was besides for myself and AEPhiSierra

ADPiZXalum 12-10-2006 12:19 AM

About the legacy rec thing, her mom has been really out of the loop with her sorority for YEARS. I basically went to their national website, found a contact number, sent it to her, and said, WRITE HER A REC!!! I think it might be a case where recs are not SUPER important, but honestly I don't know.

* I just wanted to reiterate that she is not my REAL sister so ADPi is not her legacy house!!

Stef the Pef 12-23-2006 02:26 AM

Darn! Here and I thought I had Travis all figured out!

...that still means she's listed as a "tie" to you, doesn't it? with a rec? :)

Good luck Sandy!

Ahh ha, I never said ADPi was on this campus, I only said it wasn't her legacy house!! So her "tie" to me does not matter. Her mom has some friends that were in a sorority and she got one from one of them. "I'll never tell!!" :p

Patience grasshopper, this ordeal will be over with in a few weeks!! Then you will know all!

ps.... how's Baylor, i miss it! :(

Same with my chapter. We always joke that the Reference Chair actually doesn't have a job. Sometimes we have to call nationals ourselves to verify legacies.

OOOhhhhh, good luck!! I'm hoping we have another kick hiney recruitment this year! :)

ADPiZXalum 01-07-2007 10:23 PM

Alrighty then, so Sandy was invited to all 6 sororities but could only go back to five so she cut LIve Oak. When I talked to her today, she had gone to three, Harris, Travis, and Tarrant. She still LOVES Harris and Travis and was pleasantly surprised by Tarrant. She didn't know much about them before except what I had told her and of course that's just from Baylor, so it's going to be different. Anyway, she was going to McLennan and Bexar later this evening. More when I know more!

Stef the Pef 01-08-2007 06:01 AM

Good luck to your little sister!

(Is it bad to pull for McLennan when I know it's just a code name?)

Not at all!!! So she went to McLennan and Bexar yesterday evening and says she's confused because she loves them all!! I told her that was a good position to be in!

ADPiZXalum 01-13-2007 09:48 PM

OH my goodness!! They had pref tonight and I have not heard from her since last Tuesday!!!!! I'm dying of curiosity. Ahhhhhhhhh!! I have no idea who invited her back to skit, who she cut, who she preffed, NADA! Sorry I'm about to go crazy here!

Stef the Pef 01-14-2007 05:03 AM

Awwwww...*crosses fingers for ZXAlum*

Good luck ZXSister!!!

ADPiZXalum 01-14-2007 10:09 AM

Ok, so I got an instant message from Sandy, and ended up having to call her about midnight last night. She was invited back to McLennan, Travis, Bexar, and Harriss for skit. She ended up cutting Bexar. She said that McLennan, Travis, and Harris all had amazing rounds. She was invited back to McLennan, Travis, and Harris for pref (she never once got cut....she had to do all the cutting). She ended up preffing Travis and Harris. Can't wait to see what happens this afternoon!!!

FSUZeta 01-14-2007 10:37 AM

that is great that she was in the driver's seat-hope she got the sorority of her dreams. please let us know when you are able(and where she goes to school, too please).
