Hand Signs/Symbols

Here at USF we do "alpha love" (forming a heart with our hands) for AOII and for example, ZTA does the crown, Tri-Delta forms a delta with their thumbs and index fingers..etc etc. So my question is..are the hand signs/symbols the same for every chapter at different schools? Or does every chapter have a variation on the signs? Share yours if you'd like! :)

ColumbiaPike 10-30-2006 10:11 PM

Hand signs are for gangs.

Her point exactly.

We do 'hearts and doves'. I think there was a thread on this somewhere else, but I can't remember where, and my innate laziness prevents me from searching for it.

RU OX Alum 10-30-2006 10:30 PM

we had one at a few chapters, also a call, but those are long, long gone

Drolefille 10-31-2006 01:04 AM

Not all chapters do them, but I love the pictures of the heart and doves that some SigKaps do (and I intend to spread them)
I've also seen pics of ADPis doing a diamond and others... look at the search results down there V (That's an arrow)

REE1993 10-31-2006 10:10 AM

My chapter never did handsigns. Only recently did a sister from the south show me some of them. I thought that they were neat.

33girl 10-31-2006 10:36 AM

I've never seen any handsigns for ASA, although if someone wanted to attempt a palm tree I'd like to see it.

I'd be more impressed with a Phoenix.

The palm tree woud be easy - left hand palm toward you with your index and middle finger straight up together. Right hand palm out, fingers spread. Put your left hand with your fingertips touching the middle of your right palm. Your right hand is the top of the palm, your left index/middle fingers are the trunk, and your left hand is the island the palm is always sitting on in the pic. (ok, so it's lame, but you could do it that way).

Star & crown would be easy...
As Daisy said, no idea what you would do for the Phoenix.

Drolefille 10-31-2006 11:07 AM

Set your hands on fire?

After you.

Drolefille 10-31-2006 11:14 AM

Hey, not my problem, I'm not an ASA, just making a suggestion. :p

Alphafrog, 33girl, I expect royalties if that idea is used.

adpiucf 10-31-2006 11:17 AM

UCF is very big on Greek handsigns. I think JessXIca, a UCF Alpha Xi, started a similiar thread and posted some pics.

AlphaFrog 10-31-2006 11:24 AM

Actually, if you soak your hand in rubbing alcohol, you can set your hand on fire w/o buring yourself. Am I going to try? Hell no.

Drolefille 10-31-2006 11:29 AM

If you REALLY loved your sorority you'd do it.

*Gets camera ready*

AlphaFrog 10-31-2006 11:37 AM

And if you REALLY loved your sorority, you'd have a pet snake. Go ahead, I know there's got to be a pet store somewhere around there.

Drolefille 10-31-2006 11:47 AM

I LOVE snakes :D Volunteered a zoo for years and I've handled little ones and 6 foot Boas and helped carry the big ol' pythons. I just don't have a place for one now. (and feeding them doesn't squick me out either)

So nyah.

tunatartare 10-31-2006 11:50 AM

Lambs are cute. Oh wait, this isn't the Discuss Your Mascot Here thread? Sigma Iota Alpha's handsign:

LMAO........but seriously dont compare the two because you can't. If you knew the history of gangs and how they orginated then you would not have made a comment like that and it would not have got second. The Crips for example did not start off being an organized crime group it was more of brotherhood, and builing men out of boys in a time where there were no father figures to be found. Look up gangs, you will not find the ones with hand signs bielve that. I don't want to get on a soap box so I will let you educate yourself on that issue.

Seriously. Good reading comprehension skillz. Kidz these days...

OwtLawz4lIfe 11-02-2006 04:39 PM

I'd rather not read the whole thread, I only wanted to clear up one statement that was made nothing more nothing less. new or not, dont compare hand signs to gangs signs. Nuff Said!!!! "A wise man said don't argue with fools, cause people from a distance can't tell who is who".

If you don't want to read the whole thread, then why comment? Generally, the subject of a thread changes rapidly, and when you don't read the whole thing, your comment comes out of left field.

If you read the whole thread then you'd know where his comment came from.

It came from post #2 from ColumbiaPike, but since we are now on post #27, and a completely different subject, it's irrelevant to the current topic. Plus, most people ignored the comment from post #2 anyway.

RU OX Alum 11-03-2006 09:51 AM

which is good that people ingnored it because it was ignorant

tallgreekalum 11-03-2006 10:28 AM

Poor little Alpha Delt! We've gone 175 years without a hand sign:( Whatever will we do??

ProPhetic1 11-03-2006 11:55 AM

I agree that the comment shouldnt be made but some Fraternity & Sorority hand signs are similar to gang signs. When I was younger a Kappa got shot from throwing his sign up. He was ina neighborhood wearing his nalia and because the gang not knowing history thought he belonged to a rival gang & shot him. But in No way do I agree with what ColumbiaPike said. It was a msg that didnt need to be posted & definitely didnt need to be 2nd

AmatoryMusic 11-05-2006 01:15 AM

hand sign

we have a hand sign:

care to give it a try? :p

Drolefille 11-05-2006 01:54 AM

Not me :D I maintain that if the ASA's were truly devoted to their sorority they'd do this. And take pictures. And post it for us to see :D

Phi Mu

I have never seen any Phi Mu's using any time of handsign, but then again making a quatrefoil (our symbol) or a lion (our mascot) would probably be pretty difficult to do. If anyone out there is clever enough to figure out something, I'd love to see it. ;) I always thought the ADPi's diamond that the girls make with their hands was the cutest thing on earth and am jealous we don't have something similar! :)

There was an old "post a picture of your handsign" thread where a Phi Mu claimed that she had been shown how to make a quatrefoil once. I don't know if this is really physically possible, but I would also love to see it!

We actually have 3 signs. Just depends on which region you're in or how old you are in the frat.

LTA4 11-06-2006 12:06 PM

Nationally, Thetas make kites out of their thumbs and index fingers. We also make kites with two people using our arms. Little did our founders know how good of a symbol it would be since we good make it with our hands!!
