no longer feel comfortable

SigKapSweetie 10-23-2006 10:46 PM

You've got me hooked! And the best part is that I already know there's going to be a happy ending - it doesn't get better than that! :D :D :D

Don't keep us in suspense too long!

CuriousWildcat 10-23-2006 11:29 PM

I can't wait to hear more!

Denise_DPhiE 10-24-2006 11:44 AM

Tell me more!

FSUZeta 10-24-2006 03:39 PM

you should think about being a writer. this is very interesting!

Lily1909 10-24-2006 03:40 PM

It's great to hear your honest impressions of the chapters. Looking forward to your next installment!

all the npc ones were. apparently we had some other sororities, but like i said, i knew nothing about greek life until i walked into that first room, so i'm not sure if our others are locals, nphc, or something else entirely. the school's website also doesn't mention others.

thank you! that's so nice of you to say :)

i'm so happy everyone is finding my story so interesting... it was very interesting to live, so i'm happy it's translating well on paper... screen...whatever.

i'm going to try to post the next part tonight if i get a chance to finish typing it up

CuriousWildcat 10-24-2006 06:51 PM

I can't wait!

OOhsoflyDELTA#9 10-24-2006 08:32 PM

good story...keep it coming!! I wanna know...

no longer feel comfortable

SigKapSweetie 10-24-2006 11:09 PM

Talk about torture! I have to know how this ends!!!!

I'm glad it turned out that Eric wasn't your favorite, so that you weren't second-guessing your decision not to COB. I think it was smart of you to wait until you got to your new school, both because all chapters have different personalities and because I don't think it would've really been fair to the Erics at your old school if you pledged, got initiated, and then transferred out the next semester. And, as it turned out (or it will if you finish the story!!!), you made the right choice! :D

chitownxo 10-24-2006 11:17 PM

Wow, what an amazing journey you've taken! I can't wait 'till you post the rest of your story. You are defintely a very talented writer, and I'm so glad you're sharing your story with us.

EGAOPi 10-24-2006 11:22 PM

i'm hooked! it's 11:21 and i'm already waiting for part III! hope you can post it asap! :)

ASUADPi 10-24-2006 11:33 PM

You are a terrific writer!

Drolefille 10-25-2006 12:09 AM

I love the story, I'm hooked! It's crazy but except for school size that could be my university. So I'm mentally putting the chapters on my campus over your descriptions :p

Keep going!

BadSquirrelBeta 10-25-2006 12:19 AM

Ok, if you don't know the material by now for your tests, then you won't, so it is ok to stop cramming and post your next installment...PLEASE!:p

DominoTheta 10-25-2006 06:41 AM

This is such an amazing example of how a rushee should conduct herself and how every chapter is different. You have an amazing mind set going into these parties. I can't wait to hear more!

sailboatgirl 10-25-2006 11:14 AM

Okay...I'm hooked! MUST KNOW HOW IT ENDS! :)

Welcome to Sigma! I've been a member for 2 years now (almost three) and it's been one of the best experiences of my life!

Just a slight sidenote: Sigma does allow new members to wear letters! It says so in your copy of Forever Sigma!

hmm... must just be my chapter then. we're not allowed to wear letters (except for our pins) or use them in any way (on aim profiles, facebook, etc). I don't mind though, it just makes it more special when i do get to wear them.

That's one of my biggest sorority pet peeves.

Chapters who go against inter/national policy. If it says that you're allowed to in your New Member Manual, chapters shouldn't dictate otherwise. Stuff like that pisses me off.

Sigma Kappa considers that hazing.

It could be a campus culture kind of thing - possibly that no other chapters on that campus let NM wear letters. Sigma on my campus didn't let NM wear letters.

Still not saying it's right, though.

I'd like to think that inter/national policy would supersede campus culture and chapters would be smart enough to respect that rather than risk getting in hot water with their HQs.

tunatartare 10-25-2006 02:08 PM

What I understand is why organizations that have letters on their new member pin still don't let their new members wear letters. What's the point? They're wearing them every day as it is.

SigKapSweetie 10-25-2006 02:08 PM

Congratulations to you! I'm so glad you found your home with Sigma Sigma Sigma!

And I want to echo what others have already said: you are a fantastic writer! I really enjoyed reading your story.

canadajen 10-25-2006 02:11 PM

YAY!! :)

Congratulations on finding your greek home & for following your heart!! :)

Your story was amazing, and I echo what may others have already said - you should seriously consider becoming a writer.

Best wishes to you!

I think that when HQ explicitly says that PNM's are allowed to wear letters before iniation they are trying to diffuse any potential hazing situations where a PNM might feel as if she has to "work" for the honor of wearing them.

I’m pledging with seventeen other amazing girls and I can’t wait for us all to wear letters. We’re the largest pledge class this year and, because my school just got rid of informal rush, the biggest Sigma’s ever had. Also, my rho chi is a sigma!!! As soon as she showed us her letters I ran over and gave her a huge hug. She had been amazing during rush, I was so excited that I would soon have her as a sister.

Welcome to Tri Sigma!!!!

I got so involved in your story that when you revealed that it was Sigma, I gasped and there was silence around my work station b/c people thought something tragic had happened. I am so excited for you!!!

Just so you know, I understand the campus culture, but when I was a pledge (a very long time ago and my first time as a pledge to Sigma) we were allowed to wear letters. But I understand the thought on waiting....it will be a very special moment when you get put on letters for the first time after your initiation.

Stop by the Tri Sigma forum!

Sigma love,
Gwyn

Plus the SK new member pin IS a Sigma (snake) and a Kappa. So, it wouldn't make sense anyway at least as far as we are concerned.

I figure that even though the new members don't know what the letters mean, they've pledged to join, learn and uphold the values that they learn. Their wearing of the letters is a reminder of that pledge, just like it's a reminder to the actives of the promises we've made.

AND OP:

Congrats to you and Tri Sigma! :D

KSUViolet06 10-25-2006 02:31 PM

I understand that saying you can't wear letters could be perceived as hazing, but how is it any different from denying a NM the right to wear a pin or participate in ritual? Can't it be hazing to tell a NM they have to sit outside chapter while ritual is being conducted? Or that there will be a special meeting after the regular meeting that only initiated members are allowed to attend? I just think if denying the right to wear letters is hazing then everything else should be too. Personally I don't think any of it is hazing... but that's a whooooole other topic! :)

See my post above for my take on it. It think it's also partially because it was used as a hazing tool. It's like scavenger hunts. They're not necessarily hazing, but they've been used that way too often.

Personally, I think it all depends whether your letters have an open meaning or not. If the pledges really have no clue what they mean until after initiation, I can see the logic behind preventing wearing them.

And as AlphaFrog said - if the other chapters on campus don't wear letters before initiation, right or wrong, I as a pledge wouldn't want to either. To tell the girls they HAVE to wear letters before initiation is just as bad as the reverse.

Exactly! You've hit the nail on the head.

CONGRATULATIONS! Welcome to Tri Sigma!

I, too, just let out a little yelp! My coworkers thought that my friend's daughter (one of my sorority sister's) who is in the hospital had taken a bad turn...which she hasn't! ;)
