Buffets should be banned!

Ponderosa
Picadilly's
Home Style Buffet

BLAH!

What is the appeal of buffets? Yeah you get a lot of food for cheap. I still don't think they're worth it. The quality is just so bad. The food can be cold, hard, and bland. You see snotty nose kids picking up food and putting in back down. Then there's grandma or grandpa with that hack. THe ponderosa closest to me refuses to put a lot of food out at once, so they can save it up. What's the point of going to a buffet then. Picadilly's is in a class of it's on, but it is still a buffet, and a somewhat expensive one at that!

neosoul 10-11-2006 09:53 PM

ban buffets? NEVER!!! you kill me.... I love them... that's why I fat. Chinese buffets are the best and Golden Corral... the nearest one to me is in Largo... I can't be going that far to stuff my face but damn now I'm hungry

Ugh. The Golden Corral. When Tulsa was still part of the WAC, we traveled there for a game one year, ate at the Golden Corral and everyone got the shits the next morning. It was really bad.

I never used to be a big fan of Todai, but that all changed last summer. Just ask DolphinChicaDDD. She got us the bowl 'o butta for our crab legs. Most people use dipping saucers...chick got us a whole bowl full. And we still managed to go dancing that night!

Sometimes you just gotta eat crab legs like they're going out of style. Maybe its because its one of the last things you wanna do before you deploy. Maybes its because you are allergic to shellfish. Maybe its because you need to make sure the "most dangerous job in the world" fishmen's work doesn't go to waste. Or maybe, just maybe, its because you enjoy the look everyone else at the place gives you, when there are like 5 people about about 50,000 crab leg shells.

I think we needed to dance so that our arterories didn't clog on the spot.

ps- YOU'RE MAKING ME MISS HONOLULU!! KNOCK IT OFF :)

You forgot -- "Maybe it's because you just love yelling at Chinese waiter boy for taking the plate of crab legs before you managed to finish em all"

and

"Maybe you just love the feeling of cracking a leg open to find a nice chunk of meat and then exclaiming, 'Mmm...I got me a goooood one!' "

Lol exactly. We have Golden Corral and Furrs Cafeteria here, plus some chinese buffets, and man I would hate for them to be banned. I don't care how many people have sneezed in em or whatnot---as long as I don't think about it, i'll eat it! lol

AlexMack 10-11-2006 11:44 PM

I'd like them to be banned for a different reason. There's so much food I want to eat and only a little me. It's not fair :(

valkyrie 10-11-2006 11:58 PM

tunatartare 10-11-2006 11:58 PM

Indian Taj in Jackson Heights is amazing.

Dude, the Todai I was talking about earlier has an average wait time of 45 minutes - 1 hour. It's amazing how long people will wait for a table there. There's always big groups of people every night.

Come to think of it, all the buffet restaurants here are popular and the wait's long. I wonder why?

Oh man Ryan's sucks. When I was at UGA we would hit those sometimes on road trips. The vegetables are alright, but the meat is where you get in trouble.

I don't much care for buffets either in general though.

As for crab legs- my brother lives in Anchorage. I still have about 30 pounds of giant King Crab claws in my freezer from the last shipment (big ones- 1+ pound claws and 20"+ legs), and that is all the buffet we need from time to time.

Just stick a few on the grill, put a couple of sticks of butter on the stove- and we are set. Gets me through the hard times until mudbugs come back in season around here (always a good excuse for a road trip down to Houma or Morgan City Louisiana.)

OH CAN I GET AN AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love souplantation. By far the best buffet ever!

jess_pom 10-12-2006 09:10 AM

When I was little we used to go to this place with a rotating buffet - it was super sweet. I think it was called Golden Carousel or something. I don't remember the quality but I always wanted to go there because the food spun.

No one's mentioned pizza buffets yet. There's tons around me... Pizza Hut, CiCis, Hungry Parrot.

I'm with you on Chinese and Golden Corral. Breakfast at the Golden Corral is my idea of heaven, but I love supper there too. And I've never had a problem with, um, after-effects.

As for Souplantation/Sweet Tomatoes -- I'll go there because Ms. MysticCat likes it, but ugh. I'm not a big soup eater -- one day I'll convince my wife that soup and salad do not a meal make ;) -- and their pasta and pizza is just so bland. Way overpriced for what you get. For the same price at Golden Corral, and I can get all the steak I can eat.

ShaedyKD 10-12-2006 09:34 AM

I've been kind of skeevy about buffets since the last time I went to a Sizzler, which was back in high school. This 5 year old, stuck his finger in the mashed potatoes, took a lick, must have liked it, and did it again - about 5 times. I made a worker take them away, and told the manager about it. Buffets and kids, it was pretty much my worst nightmare.

33girl 10-12-2006 10:36 AM

Hoss's is yummy. Broccoli salad mmmmm.

CiCi's is disgusting. Pizza Hut's pizza buffet is OK if it's turning over quickly. I haven't been to Ponderosa in probably 20 years and I'm a little afraid of Golden Corral - restaurants named after farm things make me think I may look like a farm animal upon exiting.

And I don't even want to get into some of the super duper sketchy mono Chinese but we have sushi buffets around here.

The best ever buffet was Chi Chi's. MMMMMMMMMM.

This is the exact reason that I can't eat at a buffet. Children & adults sticking their nasty fingers in food, and goodness knows where their hands have been before or if they had just sneezed or coughed or worse!

After seeing one adult man use his hands to pick crab out of a crab salad at a buffet I swore them off completely!

Drolefille 10-12-2006 11:12 AM

Chinese buffet in St. Louis (well in one of the suburbs) called Emperor's Palace is to DIE for. It's freaking huge, the food is always fresh, and they have a chocolate fountain. YES a fountain of delicious chocolate.

PreppyTriDelta 10-12-2006 11:20 AM

Explain this- I hate buffets (bad experiences, I guess)....but LOVE the brunch buffets at the Ritz, etc and Indian lunch buffets.

Do you live in NYC? If you do, you should go to brunch at the Essex House one day. It's amazing and an experience in and of itself.

Still BLUTANG 10-12-2006 11:28 AM

this is ironic. i randomly went to golden corral with my parents last night. My parents are old people so they love buffets, I on the other hand haven't been to one in YEARS. It was a pretty good experience.

it was clean, was NOT crowded and there were only a few (very well-behaved) kids. The steak guy even brought our food to the table because there was a little wait. I only ate one plate before my tummy started hurting tho. My eyes were bigger than my stomach. :o

Pizza buffets were the shiznit when i was in college.

OMG! Totally forgot about Hoss's... my buffet heart belongs to Hoss's!!! Too bad there aren't any in NoVA. Maybe they'll be one in Philly~!!

Taualumna 10-12-2006 12:52 PM

Count me in on the buffet hate. The only ones I would even consider going to are the places that have weekly Sunday brunches.

The ice cream at Chinese buffets are just not ice creamy enough.

There are exceptions in every category. I like the buffet at the Whole Foods Market. Very tasty and fresh.

Speaking of ice cream...ever watched a bratty kid stick their face under an ice cream machine and let it pour into their mouth?

Eww...I think I would draw the line there and say something to the kid/his parents. I usually don't let kids bother me at a restaurant, but that's just gross!

Can I get an AMEN?!?! The only thing I don't like about Hoss's is when you go to the ones in the country, and they have photos of the steers that are "featured" that week. :p

I like the Chinese etc buffets or other ethnic buffets, so I can try things and see if I "might" like them. I also realize that many of the foods I might like might taste awfully different in a "real" restaurant.

But, I'm totally against children at a salad bar or buffet unless they're with an adult. On that line:

The Weirdest Wedding Reception My Parents Attended:
Suffice it to say that it was a buffet meal, attractively set up. The bride's uncle, dressed in one of those t-shirts that look like a tux only with glitter, pulled a chair up to the buffet, and ate directly out of the various containers!! Needless to say, my parents immediately decided that they really didn't need to hang around. :p

My camp took us on a fieldtrip one day back when I was 11. We stopped at the Golden Corral for lunch. Later that day, the counselors got to deal with 30 campers who were throwing up and had diarreah. My stomach was in knots for days after eating there.

Ugh! Buffets!
I went to a Pizza Hut a while ago and ate in the restaurant where they have a pizza buffet/ salad buffet in the middle. My waiter COULD NOT STAY AWAY from the buffet! He kept double dipping carrot sticks in the dressings and licking his fingers and ugh! So disgusting! We even said something to the manager and then my waiter was still eating right off the buffet later. We could not believe it! At least get a plate if you're hungry... yuck. He definetly only got a penny for a tip.

This thread is gonna make me go to Todai's this weekend.

The only two types of buffets I've been to lately are lunch buffets at Indian restaurants, and a Sunday brunch buffet at a nice local restaurant. I need to find a good Indian restaurant with a lunch buffet within walking distance of my office; there are a couple of places within taxi distance, but by the time you cab it out there, eat, and cab it back, a couple of hours have gone by, and I don't have that kind of time. (And just try to hail a taxi in NYC when it's raining!)

http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/wu...smiley-015.gif @ the kid sticking his hands repeatedly into the mashed potatoes and the adults eating directly from the buffet. At the Sunday brunch place I go to, there are usually lots of kids of various ages, from babies on up, but their parents generally take them by the hand to the buffet and make them use the provided utensils to take food and put it on their plates.
