How Panhellenic is your family?

So here's my question for all of you lovely SigKaps:

Who else in your family is Greek? Did you follow in the legacy of your mother and grandmother? Did you break the mold when the rest of your family was an XYZ? Has no one who's come after you joined SK?

My mom's mom is a DZ, my mother is an ADPi, and my younger sister is a Tri Delta (but there was no SK on her campus so I don't mind:p )

How about the rest of you?

ETA: My Dad's youngest sister was the only one to go Greek in his family and was an AOPi.

sophisticate 10-11-2006 03:55 PM

I`m the first sorority girl, and the first Panhellenic.

In fact, I`m so first, no one in my family knows I even rushed or accepted yet.

^________________^;; I`m not exactly looking forwards to their reactions, but oh well. I want to set the mold for MY daughter(s).

Drolefille 10-11-2006 04:18 PM

Welcome to GC btw :D

If you want any thoughts on dealing with parents/family, etc. Let me know...

BaylorBean 10-11-2006 04:43 PM

My mom, her sister, and dad were in locals in college (the went to a SMALL private Lutheran school) so I am the first NPC that I know of. My step-fathers dad was a Sig Ep and his brother is a TKE (actually from my school too!). I think that is the extent of it though.

Same here if you need help dealing with the parents.

My dad's first response was "So you have colors, signs and stuff right? Aren't you just joining a gang then?" Yes, he was joking.

ETA: Where is PSUSigKap and her super Sigma Kappa family????

PSUSigKap 10-11-2006 07:05 PM

i'm here i'm here!

my grandma, her sister
my mom, her 2 sisters
me & my cousin

all sigma kappa. . .my chapter liked to joke that i was probably decended from mary low! ;)

my younger sister is a theta.

my grandfather is a delta tau delta
my great uncle is a kappa sigma
my dad is a theta chi
my uncle is a pi kappa alpha

whew! i think that's everyone! :)

SigKapSweetie 10-12-2006 11:43 AM

My dad was a Phi Mu Delta at Penn State. That's pretty much it for greeks in my family...although my grandmother was president of her area Junior League. :)

ETA: I just went to the Phi Mu Delta website, and I was totally floored by how much my dad's badge resembles mine. I can't believe he never said anything about it!

purplewindex 10-12-2006 11:52 AM

I was [and am still] the first and only person in my entire family to go Greek. :)

SigmaKappaRoyal 10-12-2006 02:55 PM

i'm the only greek in my family (my family is pretty small tho). i don't know much about my dad's side however.. i would be surprised if any of them were greek. i would love any kids i have to someday go greek.

SigmaKappaccino 10-14-2006 05:40 PM

i have to add another into the "the one-and-only family member to be greek" pile.. in fact, even though my extended family is QUITE large, i'm even the first to graduate four years of college. my brother did, however, graduate from a tech school with an associates degree, and HE was the first member to actually ever graduate - but being a tech school there were no greek organizations of any kind.

SigKapCoug 10-15-2006 01:17 AM

I'm the only NPC Greek. My brother is in Alpha Phi Omega, and my sister is pledging a local at her school.
But thats all, I think.

melsigkap 10-16-2006 02:15 PM

I'm also the only NPC greek in my family :) My mom was a Lambda Sigma Alpha, which I assume was local at her school. I know my uncle was in a fraternity, but I can't remember which one...

AlexMack 10-16-2006 05:33 PM

My sister-in-law is an AXiD, but I don't know if that counts.

I am the first in my family, but that's reasonable considering we emigrated from the UK ten years ago :D It was tough trying to explain a. what greek life was and b. why I wanted to join it.

I have now imagined this conversation in a horrendous mix of British accents and stereotypes :p

Cheerio old chap

As long as you didn't envision bad teeth. On that account you would be sorely disappointed in my family. We all have great teeth thanks to the UK National Healthcare System. See? :D

Drolefille 10-17-2006 09:11 AM

AH, well now I'm convinced :p
Nah, I don't imagine bad teeth on British people, but when I SEE really bad teeth my mind goes "BRITISH"

ufdale 10-30-2006 02:46 PM

My aunts are: ADPi, Alpha Phi, AGD and Tri Sigma. (only ADPi is on my campus though)
My dad and uncles are KAs.
Of my generation, my cousin is a Sigma Kappa, but hopefully there will be more as they graduate! I'm trying to get my younger cousins interested in sororities, and I know they want to rush. There's a good chance that they would be SK too because there are a ton of SK chapters in Missouri (though the one at Mizzou is dormant :( ). Although I know if I had a daughter I would love her to be a Sigma Kappa, I'd rather she choose the sorority that is right for her.
Oh yeah and my bf is a FIJI!!!

Drolefille 10-30-2006 03:18 PM

*cough*St. Louis University*cough*

I have a few SK contacts in Missouri :D

ufdale 10-30-2006 04:55 PM

haha I said Mizzou because that because that's where most of my relatives go to college (or Rolla). My family is catholic, though, so you never know!

Drolefille 10-30-2006 05:02 PM

woot catholics.

MUSK81 04-20-2010 03:02 PM

^^What she said about Catholics!^^ Anyway, I'm the first in my immediate family to go Greek - my mom didn't go to college and her siblings' college didn't have a Greek system. Dad did not go Greek. As for my cousins, on my mom's side:

FIJI - 1
Beta Theta Pi - 3
Zeta Tau Alpha - 1

Dad's side:
Alpha Phi - 1

My husband's a Pi Kappa Alpha and my older son will be a Pike legacy at the same school in the fall.

lavendarlace 04-21-2010 08:22 PM

I am the only NPC and SK.
3 younger sisters..
one doesn't want to go greek, no SK on her campus
second no greek chapters on campus
third not in college yet

SIL 1 didnt go greek in college
SIL 2 doesnt want to go greek, has SK at her school

no aunts, grandmas, moms in my family or husbands are greek

UFsigmakappa 04-28-2010 06:25 PM

My aunt was a Pi Beta Phi, my dad a Beta Phi Zeta...

I have three younger sisters:
18: Tri Delta (no SK on campus)
12: In middle school
9: In elementary school

Hoping to add some more SKs to the family with my cousins too!

Pirouette 12-06-2010 04:48 PM

Since I'm stuck waiting around school until I can move my car, I finally decided to add-up all the panhellenic members in my family.

Me: Sigma Kappa
Sister: Alpha Delta Pi
Mother: Delta Zeta

Mom's side of the family:
Great-grandmother: Delta Gamma
Grandmother: Delta Gamma
2 aunts: Delta Gamma
1 aunt: Chi Omega
1 aunt: Alpha Phi
3 cousins: Delta Gamma
1 cousin: Pi Beta Phi
1 cousin: Delta Delta Delta
5 more cousins still to go

Father's side:
2 great-grandmothers: Alpha Delta Pi
Grandmother: Alpha Delta Pi
3 Aunts: Alpha Delta Pi
7 cousins: Alpha Delta Pi

Mother-in-law (not technically related but my kids will be legacies through her): Sigma Delta Tau

magnolias2013 12-20-2011 03:24 AM

That I know of (we haven't really talked much about Greek life in my family):

One aunt is a Chi Omega, like myself
A cousin is Kappa Delta
I believe another cousin was/is Greek (though I don't know affiliation), and my grandmother did go through rush in the 1950s but dropped out for unknown reasons

amIblue? 12-20-2011 09:50 AM

Oh, what the heck.

Me: Kappa
Mom: Kappa Delta
Dad: Sigma Chi
Stepdad: Kappa Alpha

I only have brothers, one is KA; the other two were not greek.

Two of my brothers in law on my husband's side are KA. My father in law is KA.

Sisters in law are as follows: two Chi O's, a KD, a Theta, and a DG.

I think that's everyone. Looking forward to seeing how the next generation goes. My daughter currently has 15 cousins, so lots of opportunities for going greek!

AXOrushadvisor 12-24-2011 11:59 AM

Son- at a college with no Frats, but he plays a college sport which is sorta like a frat:)
DD- still in HS, but hoping to go Greek- One of her college requirements is a strong Greek system among other things.

My Dad: Kappa Sigma
My Cousin: Theta
SIL: Kappa
2 Nieces Sigma Kappa's

None of my siblings went Greek

CougADPi 12-24-2011 02:16 PM

My cousin went through recruitment at my school this past fall and became a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma!

It's hard for me to imagine that many family members as Greek, since I be the only one in my family and only one in the extended family.

So going into recruitment you were a DZ, DG and ADPi legacy? Did you like any of your legacy houses? Did you ever feel pressured to go one of your legacy houses, especially ADPi since it seems like every female on your dad's side is ADPi?

This is completely fascinating to me!

BetteDavisEyes 07-17-2013 12:47 PM

I'm surprised I never responded to this thread though I don't have much to add. There aren't many Greeks in my family.

I'm a Sigma Kappa. I have an Alpha Phi cousin out of Utah and a cousin that's an AXO out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She prefed AXO and SK but went AXO. I also have an aunt that's a DZ.

Katmandu 07-17-2013 05:32 PM

Delta Gamma cousins, Mom and Auntie in a local, sons TKE and LXA.

aesovs 07-17-2013 09:59 PM

Mom: Chi Omega
Aunt: Kappa Delta
Grandmother: Kappa Delta
Grandmother: Alpha Gamma Delta
Dad: Phi Delta Theta
Uncle: Sigma Alpha Epsilon

This doesn't seem like a lot, but my family's really small (my dad's an only child and my mom only has one sister, so there are only four people in my generation!). I'm the youngest, and neither of my cousins nor my brother were interested in rushing!

AnchorAlum 07-19-2013 09:55 PM

First in my family to be a member of a GLO. Two brothers followed, one a Phi Delt, the other ATO.
Hubby Sigma Chi, his parents Mom a Phi Mu and Dad a Pike, his aunt an Alpha Xi Delta.

My children: Delta Tau Delta and DG. Son in law an SAE, daughter in law an ADPi. Nephew Lambda Chi. We're all over the map!

MaryPoppins 07-19-2013 11:46 PM

Theta: Mom, Aunt, Uncle's Wife, and Mary Poppins.
ChiO: Maternal Grandmother, cousins.
Kappa: Cousins
