Lets do this!

Hello, I am new to GC and fairly new to Greek life. I'm a freshman at JWU, sadly Greek life sucks here on campus. I LOVE Greek life and what fraternities/sororities have to offer. There is only 4 fraternities that one can join. Yah sure me and my very close friend love them all but they are not what we are looking for. Tell you the truth, we want to start our own fraternity; adding a new chapter onto campus. 10 years ago, 1 out of 6 students where in a fraternity now only 3% of students are.

We have ALOT of big ideals, ALOT!

My question is... I need help. We need guidance on what to do. Right now we are searching the crap out of starting a fraternity and what must be done. Help please!

kathykd2005 10-05-2006 08:02 PM

Good for you!!! Do some research on what fraternities are expanding; that should help. You will have to contact the national headquarters of the fraternities you are interested in, so that they can determine whether or not they would like to help you. Most likely, they will want to "absorb" a local, so you could first start working on a local fraternity, and try to gain permission for it on your campus. Good luck!!!

half9 10-05-2006 08:06 PM

Yes thank you. That’s what we wear thinking about is the fraternity on which we would like to expend. How does one go about doing that? How do you choose the fraternity? Right now, we are just looking up fraternities that are the oldest and well known (and of course what they stand for).

kathykd2005 10-05-2006 08:08 PM

That is definitely a good start!!! You are doing all you can do right now. Remember, this could take quite awhile, so make sure you are in it for the long haul! :)

Haha, how true that is!

This is what we have so far (and I believe we are doing a very good job for freshmen).

We contacted the director of expansion for XP (Chi Phi). My friend's dad is an alumnus of XP; he sent a letter to "someone". Tomorrow I and my friend are going to the school's activity center to talk about it (dressed up).

kathykd2005 10-05-2006 08:22 PM

Hahhaa you are too cute. My friend and I? (Sorry, I'm an English Teacher!) Other fraternities you may want to check out are: Kappa Alpha Order, Phi Kappa Sigma, Pi Kappa Phi (one of my friends from college is a current expansion expert, I could give you a contact), Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Delta Tau Delta.

half9 10-05-2006 08:26 PM

Oh geez I'm cute now : /. haha its all good, thanks? English is not my subject so before I post a message. I run it through MS:Word =^.^=.

Anyways thanks for the incite, I’m passing this information onto my friend.

kathykd2005 10-05-2006 08:27 PM

No problem!!! You'll get a lot more info from other posters, too :)

Any FS kids wonder if this is Rishi?

Buttonz 10-05-2006 10:13 PM

I'm assuming you are in Providence, and not one of the other campus.

Who else got back on campus this year? Last year there were only 3 recoginized by the school...if you want to know why, PM me and I'll tell you.

I'd go down to the Citizen Bank Center for Student Invovlment and see if they are open to a new group on campus. If they are, then you need to figure out what you want and what groups your intrested in. Once you do that, take a look and see what those groups requirments are for a colony, and then see if any of them are open to colonizing at JWU.

Good luck, and it's nice to see someone from JWU here!

If he is at the Providence campus, Pi Kappa Phi was kicked off a few years back (PM me and I'll tell you the details that I know about it) but there are still a few brothers around that wear letters, so they might have some luck bringing them back.

Give rush a try first and see if there are any current chapters you might enjoy. It takes a lot of work to bring a new fraternity to campus and there may be an existing brotherhood at your school already that you will like.

Greekopedia 10-06-2006 01:26 AM

good luck on your endeavors.

I started my chapter at UF and it has been an extraordinary experience.

Pi Phi Panda 10-06-2006 02:22 AM

Wow, congrats on beginning something so monumental. I encourage you to stick with it, because not only will it be the experience of a lifetime, it will look great on resumes and such.

Remember, you may hit speed bumps, but don't give up!

I am pretty much brand new to greek life as well. I transferred from a school that has very little greek life to a school that has the second largest greek community in the state.

I want to make our greek life proliferate as well!

Thank you all for your support, now let’s get down to business.

ZBT and TKE(?) are kicked off, I was told that ZBT wants back on...

About the rushing, yes me and my friend rushed with the fraternities. We like only two of them but they are still not quit what we are looking for.

UPDATE:

We talked to XP (Chi Phi) and we really like them. We got a very good vibe just by talking to the rep over the phone. The information he told us was very wonderful to hear. Yes, XP is more then happy to expend to JWU and JWU is looking for more fraternities to come onto campuses. To our luck, XP national convention is this Saturday in PROVIDENCE!!!! The rep wants me and my friend to come out!

Good luck to you and it sounds like things may be coming together.

But if any National is really interested, it would help if you had more than one friend.

But, if to make a presentation, have your ducks in a row.

Why do you want Chi Psi. What struck you as the Greek Organization that you were interested in. If they seem ripe for expansion so that is a plus.

If memory serves me, there are many Chi Psi Chapters in that area that could be of help in an expansion

True, a lot depends on the thinking of the School and how they feel about expanding with another GLO. How many GLOs goth Fraternal and Sorority are on campus. The number of GLOs % wise, are Greeks accepted. Depending on that, it could help a lot with a old and known Fraternity.

Again, having been there it is a lot of hard work. It is also one of the most rewarding things in your life if you can accomplish that.

If i can be of help, PM me.

Buttonz 10-13-2006 08:57 PM

From what I can tell you about both TKE and ZBT, they will not get back on campus naytime soon.

Delta Sigma Phi is pretty good and I have a few friends in them.

I'm glad that Chi Phi is intrested, and it would be great to see another fraternity on campus! Good luck to you!

Any questions feel free to PM me!

Chi PHI, not Chi Psi. And his friend's dad is a Chi Phi. That's as good a connection as any. Good luck!

Why not start your own local fraternity? That's what a group of us are doing on the Rhode Island College campus (well, we're doing a sorority, not fraternity, but we're creating our own local one). You can mold it into exactly what you want and I know that it's a fairly simple process at RIC.

Good luck with whatever you do!!!!!!!!! :)

Lots of fraternities prefer to start from scratch, rather then absorbing a local fraternity. Especially those with programs such as BMP.

Where is JWU?

There is a lot envolved in starting a new group on a campus. I know for a fact.:)

I too found the GLOs lacking in what I wanted and began to change it.

First, have an idea fo what you want to do, Affiliate with a Natioanl Organization which you seem to be wanting to do.

Be concerned with membership and find enough members to want GLOs to be interested in your group. What is the feeling of Greeks on campus, the mix of he and she Glos.

How many GLOs are on campus with the number of students.

What is the Schools feeling about Greeks on camus, friendly or not?

What GLOs are in the area that you are looking at and who is expanding.

Many GLOs today expand including LXA, TKE, Chi Phi and others but are still very careful about expanding on a campus where the feelings may be anti greek.

PM me if you have further questions.

Good luck to you!:)
