Congressman Foley Resigns

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/09/...ils/index.html

Absolutely appalling!

shinerbock 09-29-2006 09:15 PM

its f*cking disgusting.

I'm surprised Dateline NBC didn't break it first.

Seriously though. This is just plain sick.

alum 09-29-2006 09:18 PM

No kidding, especially since my daughter served in that Page Class.

Not to sound insensitive but has she said anything to you about this tonight?

Anyone doing this has a problem-look at the Dateline programs that still catch ----idiots after all these years.

And did anyone see what one of this posts this guy held?

Just found this link which has some more info-like this was known about almost a year ago if I read it correctly:

Actually I've been emailing her all day to find out if she knew the boy or had an inkling about Foley. Typical freshman at college, never at the computer or phone when I need her.... She did say that he was gay right away when I asked her if she had met Foley but was completely shocked (and grossed out) when I told her the whole story.

Yes, I saw Foley's committee: disgustingly ironic.. reminds me of when some 3-4 star nominated for Inspector General (oversees all sexual harrassment cases) and was brought up on s.h. charges by a female general.

Thank goodness Foley is gone. His house.gov website is down and after his name in the Members' List, it says the word VACANCY. Back in the early 1980s, there were a couple of Congressmen who were caught having inappropriate relationships with Pages. These may be 16 year olds but they are still kids and are treated as such by the Page Staff which serve in loco parentis.

This situation is just beyond disturbing!! Yuck! And more than one person has brought up Dateline and their specials that they run. What is so sad is Dateline now run those specials every Friday night I believe. And the specials are NOT repeats. These are new people that they are catching. How messed up is it that they can continue to do installments of that special? And for those of us who watch those, we almost shouldn't be shocked that a politician was caught. In more than one of the Dateline specials they have caught people who were teachers, ministers, etc. So very sick!!

BetteDavisEyes 09-30-2006 01:13 PM

That's just wrong. Sick sick sick is definitely correct.

It just never ceases to amaze me how men that work their entire life at achieving a position...make dumb moves like this...and actually think it won't leak to the public.

Just a very minor corection to your posting: Men and Women.

Think of how many female teachers have been caught....and a few other professions as well........

As far as I know there have never been any politicians in Australia that have done that, though I know of plenty Teachers and Lecturers that have gotten into a lot of legal trouble because of similar incidents. One guy my mum taught with about 20 years ago got caught doing stuff with kids that he shouldn't of and he ended up having something done to him in prison.

Still... doing that stuff to kids is just plain unforgiveable....

DeltAlum 10-01-2006 02:38 PM

Isn't it remarkable how selective the memories of politicians can be when it comes to when they allegedly learned of a situation like this one? Specifically Dennis Hastert in this case, but certainly not limited to him or his party.

Washington has some pretty big rugs to sweep things under.

alum 10-01-2006 03:46 PM

This is not the first time that a Congressman has made inappropriate advances to a Page. About 20-25 years ago, Rep Crane (IN-R) was caught having a relationship with a female Page. He apologized and cried, but was not re-elected. The same year, Rep Studds (MA-D) was caught with a male Page. He asserted his right to do this with the boy (in my eyes, 16-17 year olds are still kids, never mind the position of authority issue regarding a Congressman and Page) and refused to apologize. He was actually re-elected by his constituency for the next 10 years. As I said before, it's disgraceful!

I never worried about my D on the Hill in regards to predatory adults as opposed to any other event/function/opportunity of which she was a participant. I would never forbid my S from applying to the program if that's what he wants to do when he is eligible. Luckily Foley is an aberration.

jon1856 10-01-2006 08:15 PM

This is going to be more than one news cycle-have to wonder how much ( not if IMHO ) this will impact the up-coming elections.

I give this 3 months max before it ends up on Law & Order.

I'm betting on SVU getting first pitch at this storyline, though something keeps on telling me that they made a story similar to this a few seasons ago.......

It'd have to get more explicit then IM for SVU to get it...but then again, they do tend to get more "based on actual story..." then the regular L&O.

Pages are hs juniors. Interns are (usually) college students.

Pages work for the Minority or Majority Page Supervisor. This is dependent on the party affiliation of their sponsoring Congressman/Senator.

Interns tend to work directly for their Senator or Congressman.

First he checks into rehab, now he says he was molested by a priest when he was a kid:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/10/...dal/index.html

Oh come on... this is terrible. Even if it WERE true (which personally I have serious doubts about) that he was molested, it is not an excuse for what he did. It is not an appropriate time to bring it up. It's a very see-through tactic to try to divert some attention away from what he did back to the whole priest thing.

honeychile 10-03-2006 08:49 PM

I am completely disgusted by Foley's antics - as I have been with the others before him.

As for the "I was molested..." plea, I could scream! That nutjob out in Lancaster claimed the same thing, as did Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and several other men I know. So, what do we do? Waste the child before he has a chance to grow up and molest someone else?

lifesaver 10-03-2006 10:03 PM

I just find it really odd hearing Brian Williams and all the other reporters reading the text on the IM's. Seriously, did you ever think you'd hear Brian Williams, (or Charlie Gibson or whomever) say, "Take it out and touch it." bwahahha. It only could be better if good ole Dan Rather was still anchoring. Can you imagine? Dan Rather reading aloud, "Do I make you hot?" Bwahahahhahahahah.

Just waiting till the first parody of the red-stripe ad shows up on youtube.

"Boo creepy US congressman. Hooray Beer!"

lol.

I swear the word 'creepy' will show up on google's zeitgeist next week.

Q: Why don’t GOP congressman use bookmarks?
A: They don’t need to; they simply bend over the pages.

ha ha, that's the joke I heard the other day and couldn't remember how it went. Thanks!

ABC ONLINE GLITCH LEADS TO IDENTITY OF FOLEY ACCUSER

FEATURED IM EXCHANGE WAS WITH 18 YEAR OLD

Wed Oct 04 2006 20:32:06 ET

A posting on ABCNEWS.COM of an unredacted instant message sessions between Rep. Mark Foley and a former congressional page has exposed the identity of the now 21 year-old accuser.

The website PASSIONATE AMERICA detailed the startling exposure late Wednesday.

ABCNEWS said in a statement: "We go to great lengths to prevent the names of alleged sex crime victims from being revealed. On Friday there was a very brief technical glitch on our site which was overridden immediately. It is possible that during that very brief interval a screen name could have been captured. Reviews of the site since then show no unredacted screen names."

SEX CHAT WAS WITH 18 YEAR OLD

On Tuesday ABC news released a high-impact instant message exchange between Foley and, as ABC explained, a young man "under the age of 18."

ABC headlined the story: "New Foley Instant Messages; Had Internet Sex While Awaiting House Vote"

But upon reviewing the records, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, the young man was in fact over the age of 18 at the time of the exchange.

A network source explains, messages with the young man and disgraced former Congressman Foley took place before and after the 18th birthday.

Nothing about being 21 at the time e-mails took place. Is page is NOW 21.
The questions seem to be if under 18 at the time.
And IMHO, even if between 16 and 18, there still are major problems.
And on ABC's site, I found this link, nothing about age.
http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/...t_message.html

We all can, and do, miss read numbers. Not a problem.

RU OX Alum 10-04-2006 11:40 PM

age really isn't a factor in this, at least not to me, its just that....that is like if your boss asks you out, I mean that is going to get icky, but I don't know what the age of consent is in DC i think its 16 in Del and 18 in VA & MD but right now its 20 to 12 and I gotta be up for work, so......

peace

alum 10-05-2006 09:54 AM

Pages are hs juniors. They are required to be at least 16 years of age.

Interns are college students. There is no minimum age requirement but presumably 17+ even if they are rising college freshmen.
-----
It is much too easy to identify the victim when it is said which Congressman was the sponsor of a specific Page. The Representatives never sponsor more than 1 per session. If the name of the specific sponsoring Congressman had been kept under wraps, there would be speculation as to what Page was contacted by Foley, not such certainty.

"Congressman X is my Representative. Wait a minute, didn't that guy in my algebra class go to DC for some government thing in hs a couple of years ago? Must be him. I wonder if he swings that way...."

shinerbock 10-05-2006 10:45 AM

Of course ABC isn't gonna mention that they screwed up, or that the kid may have been of legal age. Drudge shows it, because Drudge doesn't care whether the Democrats win back congress or not...ABC on the other hand...

Not to say getting to the bottom of this isn't important, I just think its telling how ABC and CNN will paste "HASTERT KNEW!!! HE SHOULD RESIGN" when the facts aren't out. I haven't heard anyone from CNN or ABC mention that the emails and such reported to Hastert were only the katrina and picture ones. I mean, if Hastert did know and took no/poor action, then sure, but at least tell both sides, gee. I don't really like Hastert as speaker, but its just annoying to flip on CNN and hear a "journalist" talk about how the GOP should lose the house because of their inaction on the Foley thing.

The folks I've heard or read about saying Hastert should resign are politicians -- Republicans and Democrats, not news organizations. The latter quotes what the former said.

JonoBN41 10-05-2006 12:55 PM

I fail to see how "age of consent" or "legal age" has any bearing on conversations, whether by IM, PM, e-mail, or in person. Last I knew, freedom of speech is not restricted by age.

There may be minimum ages for driving, buying alcohol, and HAVING sex, but talking about it?

Whereas most boys begin masturbating between the ages of 11 and 13, will there now be a law prohibiting them from discussing it with any adult, by any means, until they are 18? It would certainly cast us back to the age of puritanism, fear, and guilt.

Will there be no more sex education, or would it have to be taught by a minor???

I read the IMs and it's obvious the kid was having fun talking freely about his techniques and even fetishes. It was guy talk.

I see this whole thing as nothing more than a witch hunt promulgated by those with sexual hang-ups, political agendas, and the media who are happy to blow anything "shocking" out of proportion.

AlphaFrog 10-05-2006 01:04 PM

Freedom of speech does not apply to sexual harassment of a minor that is under your supervision.

If a 30 year old guy IMs his 27 year old secretary and asks her what she's wearing, it's sexual harassment, regardless of age of consent, etc.
