The painful thread

In this thread we discuss what's currently ailing us.

I popped my knee or something tonight at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class. This guy just basically grabbed me and took me down to the ground while I had one of my legs straightened. There was a popping sound as I went down yelling. I was able to get up and walk on it, though not 100%. I've got an ice pack on it right now. Doesn't feel very good...

Try some heat. Sometimes pain could actualyl get worse with ice and better with heat, a ltitle trick that I learnt in PT.

Yikes! A popping sound in ones knee is never a good thing. I hope you feel better soon. And get ye to a doctor; knees aren't something to mess around with!

You know, you should have stuck your finger in that guy's eye.

That's a classic sign of a torn meniscus. Get thee to an orthopedist today. You're going to need an MRI. Hopefully, your ACL is OK.

I can relate-- I popped my knee a number of times in judo.. and have had knee surgery three times.

PhoenixAzul 09-28-2006 10:39 AM

Right now...my left foot and big toe nail. I did my first Half-Ironman distance triathlon this weekend and it was a bit rough. Did go out and run today though...I was supposed to take a week off but I was getting bored and cranky.

KatieKate1244 09-28-2006 02:59 PM

My sinsuses. If those suckers don't stop with the madness they're going to be coming out of my head this weekend.

AlexMack 09-28-2006 03:00 PM

What isn't?

Though I've been doing a lot better lately. Knee's doing pretty good and back's not as bad as it was.

(Had knee surgery (lateral release) in April after a year and a half of excruciating pain and I have a herniated disk in my lower back).

Vicodin is a friend!

AChiOhSnap 09-28-2006 04:16 PM

My sinuses and ears are about to explode and my throat is scratchy. I hate my fall allergies.

ZTAngel 09-28-2006 04:50 PM

My feet. I had an work event this morning that I was in charge of that kept me on my feet from 8:30am until 3pm. I wore pinchy shoes too. :(

The Grapist 09-28-2006 05:10 PM

I'm sore from using a greasy bike chain. :o

congested like a mother.
called out sick today.
coughing up blood.
would it be wrong to call out tomorrow?

JonInKC 09-28-2006 09:10 PM

To update, I guess after having it x-rayed today it's just a sprain. Brace, ibuprofen and ice.

I duno if this is an inside joke, but it made me laugh out loud for real.

Today the front of my right knee felt like someone kept poking dull needles into it, and the back of my left knee felt like someone was stabbing it. Ironically enough, I was working my clerical job at a radiology clinic. It'd be cool if I could get it xrayed or MRId for free!

Centaur--- is what you had kinda the same as an inflamed patella and MCL? That's apparently what happened to me when I sprained it a few months ago and it's been hurting so bad lately and if it even bends slightly background it feels like something is tearing. I think there's something else wrong with it because the patella feels WAY different than my right patella.

BetteDavisEyes 09-28-2006 10:42 PM

Upper and lower back pain since yesterday. I only get relief when laying flat on my back. :(

Senusret I 09-28-2006 11:51 PM

I feel fine right now, but today, as I was talking to a new tutor on my staff, a kid hit me in the nuts.

Not on purpose.....she's in special ed and has serious issues.

But I was hit in the nuts nonetheless.

No, actually I think I had a unique problem, nothing my doctors had ever seen their entire careers. I had a severe lateral patella tilt which means that my patella didn't track properly and leaned severely to the outside of my leg. I was in physical therapy for a different problem, but I started getting shooting pains at the back of my leg, on the very inside just above my knee. That patellar tilt had caused all my hamstring tendons to go into permanent spasm. I can't even go into how painful that was. Think of having pain at a 10 every single day, and you can't sit, stand, lie down, put any pressure on the back of your leg for any length of time.

For you, I'd go see an orthopedist. Does your knee feel unstable, ever give out, lock up? It might be an ACL or meniscal problem. I've also had problems with my MCL but I think those were all entirely related to the fact that my entire knee structure sucked to begin with. Sorry for the long answer. I'm a medical nerd :P

Yeah the orthopedist told me it was just that inflamed patella thing, but I'm thinking differently since the kneecap on my left knee feels way diff than the right one. My knees used to lock when I was younger if I had them bent for a long time... it was scary and was the worst pain ever, so I've learned to constantly unbend my knees and never sit on them. And they always feel unstable.

xo_kathy 09-29-2006 12:44 PM

My left wrist is killing me today. I think I must have slept on it weird - curled up under me or something. Thank God it's not my right writst or I couldn't use the mouse!!!

So yesterday morning I popped it again going down some stairs... So after sitting in the dr.s office for about an hour in pain today they took x-rays again. At least this time I saw my actual doctor, last time I went to urgent care. So yeah, they're trying to get me in today for an MRI. The doctor thinks it's the ACL. No judo or jiu jitsu for a LONG time it looks like. :(

RU OX Alum 10-31-2006 05:57 PM

Jon that sucks bro

RACooper 10-31-2006 07:18 PM

The same thing as every day - knee pain, lower back pain, and neck pain. The pain might be associated with my CFS... but then again I don't have much if any cartilage left in my knees, and I "frayed" (less than a tear, more than a strain) my ACL & PCL on my right knee 6 years ago (ironically on Halloween) - and I put my back and neck out when I went sailing of the turret of a tank when it fired without warning 13 years ago... so really I'd pretty much be in pain anyways ~ it's just now I can't take any pain-killers 'cause they'd react with the medication I'm currently on :(

At least they can get you in for the MRI really quickly. If it makes you feel better, I have no idea if I'll ever get back to taekwondo. Okay, that probably won't make you feel better, but just know that I know what it feels like. Welcome to the gimp squad!

Scandia 10-31-2006 08:03 PM

I have had the flu TWICE this month. I have had it for 5 days now, and the fevers will not go away. The first time, it eventually ended- but I did have to miss a day of work. This time, it started on Friday in the middle of a class tour I was doing. And the fevers keep ebbing and flowing. I know both hits have been the flu because usually colds have a certain progression that these do not match.

aephi alum 10-31-2006 08:18 PM

I have a bad cold. I'm coughing and I've lost my voice... and I have two job interviews this week!

AXO Alum 11-02-2006 01:19 PM

My left knee has been popping for 3 days straight. It hurts so bad at night that its hard to sleep. I need to go to the doctor, but currently hate my GP & need a new one. So maybe I'll try to get an appointment next week if I can find a new doctor that I like.

I think it is Tippiechick's fault - she must have popped it out of place when she gave me a JUDO CHOP to the knee while I wasn't paying attention. She is quick (and sneaky) like that!

AKA_Monet 11-02-2006 05:53 PM

My invisible alien implant... ;)

JonInKC 02-09-2007 03:44 PM

Ok, what better time to add to this thread...

I mentioned earlier that I tore my ACL and meniscus in my right knee in the fall (no pun intended). Well, yesterday they did a patellar tendon autograft which basically means they took a tendon out of the front of my knee and made a substitute ACL for me. It wasn't so bad until the numbness wore off. I called my boss today and told him the dr. said right now it looks like I won't be released to go back to work for a month.

But anyway, as you might imagine my knee is rather sore right now... my leg is in an immobilization cast and I'm hobbling around on crutches. Thank God for hydrocodone. Some Ambien would be nice.

blueangel 02-09-2007 03:49 PM

I was thinking about you yesterday. Glad to hear you're doing OK. How long will it be until you get to start PT?

Soon, I imagine. Didn't get to talk to the dr. after surgery but I see him on Monday. The dr. said it's probably gonna be around a year's worth of rehab. Right now my goal is to improve enough to where I can go back to BJJ and do just drill some moves from the guard or something relatively low impact like that.

RoyalEmpress33 02-09-2007 04:12 PM

My stomach and throat is killing me, and my nose is a little runny too. I'm very fatigued as well. All I want to do is wrap up in my bed and go night-night.

blueangel 02-09-2007 04:17 PM

As you learned the hard way :) BJJ can be hell on your knees. One tip I can pass along to you (which I didn't know until my third knee surgery) is that while building up your quads is important... you've also got to blast your hams.

Please tell me you don't do leg locks in BJJ? Fortunately, they're illegal in Kodokan Judo.

Yeah I don't think BJJ allows them at most tournaments either, at least not until like brown belt I believe.
