Pat Summit

I was listening to the radio before I went to bed the other night - a ritual habbit of mine - when I heard that the University of Tennessee's Men's Basketball coach resigned and their first candidate hopeful was their women's basketball coach - and Chi Omega - Pat Summit.
Pat declined the offer. What a lady.

ISU_XO 03-26-2001 02:17 PM

Since University of Connecticut and Tennessee are the biggest rivals - I'll watch the games sometimes and you will see women holding up signs in the crowd "Chi Omega loves Pat Summit" - a very neat thing!

Hootie 03-26-2001 03:37 PM

Did you see a picture of two women holding up a sign that said "Chi O Loves You Pat" in on of our magazine issue's last year? I thought it was really neat as well!

You all are going to think I'm obsessed with Pat by the time this thread is done...he he he.
I had to add something though!
The other night I was getting ready for bed and my brother had ESPN on (something like that) when (is it Brian Gumble) was interviewing someone and this guy said that the Governor even wants Pat to proceed him when his office is through.
So I guess that means Pat's pretty BIG in Tennessee! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
YEAH PAT!

ISU_XO 03-29-2001 12:55 PM

I wish more "big name" women would talk up Chi Omega like she does!

NutBrnHair 01-17-2004 03:30 PM

Congrats to Pat!

Pat Summit (Xi Zeta, UT-Martin) is in her 30th year of coaching at Univ. of Tennessee. She has over 800 wins and this season will coach her 1000th game! With six national championships to her credit, no telling what achievement is next!

Not only is she a terrific coach, but she is a fantastic person as well. She has been a speaker at the Chi Omega National Convention in 1988 in St. Louis and at the Centennial Celebration in Memphis in 1995.

Go Pat!

GO LADY VOLS!

xo_kathy 01-20-2004 01:39 PM

Every time I see her on ESPN I say to my boyfriend "Pat Summit is a Chi Omega!"

It's gotten to the point where before I can say anything he says "Yeah, yeah, she's yor sorority sister!" :D

Jill1228 01-20-2004 02:37 PM

Sorry to crash but...

Pat is da woman! http://www.suburbia.com.au/~morpheus...es/bowdown.gif

I really like her as a coach! Ok ladies, how tall is she. She looks like an amazon! (and I say that in a good way!) :D

NutBrnHair 01-20-2004 02:57 PM

Pat for President of UT?

Jill, you're always welcome! (I'll try to find out how tall she is and let you know!)

Also...the NBC affiliate in Knoxville reported this last week...

SUMMITT, GORE, ANDERSON TURN DOWN UT CANDIDACY
Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt, former Vice President Al Gore and state Supreme Court Justice Riley Anderson say thanks, but no thanks.

All three were nominated by the public as possible candidates for the next president of the University of Tennessee. All three have declined.

Summitt says she's happy to finish out her career at UT as a basketball coach, and jokes that an opposing coach must have nominated her to get her out of the game.

LOL! That's a good one!

That's great to see how many people in that state love and respect her!

OK Jill, here's what the UT Athletic Office told me...

Coach Summitt is 5'10.5" tall. This made for quite a challenge when in 1976 Pat Head had to rebound against 7'2" Uliana Semenova of the USSR during the Olympics in Montreal.

WOW! That's a big girl!

*Note* -- Uljana Semjonova is NOT a Chi Omega! ;)

More about Ms. Pat

Okay... a lil piece of juicy gossip about Pat that has no relevance to her basketball skills: My boyfriend's(soon to be life partner- soon as in when I get outta law school and he out of pharmacy school-TOO LONG from now) dad use to date (not serious or anything) Pat! Ain't that neat?! hehehe ;) He said she was, and still is, one classy lady!

okay... back to her basketball greatness and status as a fabulous Chi Omega.

UKDaisy 02-03-2004 11:49 PM

Sorry to crash your boards ladies - but I must add that Pat is wonderful! Now I attend UK, so nothing about UT ever makes me happy - except the Lady Vols, which really are a great organization. We, UK, was luckily enough to get former UT assistant Coach DeMoss. Before the game last week they both hugged and stood there for a minute just talking. It was so sincere that both ladies still honestly cared and loved one another. She is a fantastic lady!!!

xo_kathy 07-28-2004 09:53 AM

Last night I was watching a thing on ESPN about the top 25 coaches (any sport). The only pre-req. was that their major accomplishments took place in the last 25 years as well.

Guess who was number 5?
Coach Summit!

And I *think* she was the only woman - though there may have been one other.

Go Pat!

NutBrnHair 07-31-2004 10:54 AM

That IS impressive! Way to go, Sister Summitt!

Pat goes for record tonight!

Even with a chance to break one of the most prestigious marks in basketball history, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt remains focused solely on advancing in the NCAA tournament.

Summitt, with the advantage of playing in front of her home crowd, can become the winningest coach in the history of college basketball when the top-seeded Lady Volunteers meet Purdue in the second round of the Philadelphia Regional.

Tennessee's 94-43 victory over Western Carolina in the first round Sunday was win No. 879 for Summitt, tying her with former North Carolina men's coach Dean Smith for the all-time record.

After the win, the Lady Vols asked their coach if she was excited about trying to break Smith's record in the second round.

``I said, 'Yes, I want your help,''' Summitt said. ``I want to get this over with only because we will be going to Philadelphia and we all want to go to Philadelphia.''

The winner of Tuesday's game advances to face either 12th-seeded Middle Tennessee State or No. 4 Texas Tech in the regional semifinals in Philadelphia.

Summitt is 879-171, while Smith was 879-254 in 36 years with the Tar Heels. Summitt has six national titles and 15 Final Four appearances, and tops all women's coaches with an 86-17 NCAA tournament record.

Summitt has a chance to break the record in front of her home crowd. She tied Smith on Tennessee's home court at Thompson-Boling Arena, where the Lady Vols are 252-14 since it opened in 1987. The Lady Volunteers have never lost an NCAA game in Knoxville, Tenn., going 45-0 since the women's tournament began in 1982.

Shanna Zolman and the Lady Vols made it easy for Summitt to get the victory Sunday.

Zolman matched her career high of 28 points, going 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. The junior guard is shooting 46 percent from 3-point range in 13 career tournament games.

Shyra Ely added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Alexis Hornbuckle had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Tennessee.

Purdue used its height advantage to defeat eighth-seeded New Mexico 68-56 in the first round Sunday. Erin Lawless scored 22 points and fellow 6-foot-2 forward Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton added 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Boilermakers won't have the same size edge against the Lady Vols, who have six players who are 6-3 or taller.

Purdue's 16 wins were the fewest for an at-large team in the NCAA tournament. It's the first year that Purdue coach Kristy Curry hasn't won at least 20 games in her six seasons. The Boilermakers, appearing in the tournament for the 12th straight year, would have to make the Final Four to keep Curry's streak alive.

However, Curry instead could end up being the losing coach in a milestone game for Summitt.

``To a certain degree in my heart I have to be pulling for her a little bit,'' Curry said. ``That's human nature.''

I bet NutBrn has the TV already set to watch! Unless she has tickets?!? :D

I will be glued to the set tonight!

I do have tickets for the Chattanooga Regional this weekend -- I was really hoping the Lady Vols would be in that part of the bracket, but alas, they go to Philly. I'll still get to see some great basketball with LSU, Georgia, Duke, etc.

xo_kathy 03-23-2005 02:05 PM

She did it!

Congrats to Sister Summit on becoming the winnigest coach in Div. 1 college basketball!

She was so humble last night. And I love how she can find so much classy orange clothing! :)

Pat's Chi Omega Experience

"When she arrived in Martin, hardly an urbane setting, young Head was painfully shy and so embarrassed by the way she talked that she would later ask two sorority sisters to give her a crash-course in finishing school."

--The Memphis Flyer, April 16, 1998

"We try to instill in the players that we want them to grow and develop life skills and understand it's important how they present themselves. They are role models. It's a matter of influence from my college days, my experience in the sorority, as well as players I played with at Martin. That was important to them that we be good role models. "

Summitt Earns Record Salary
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Pat Summitt is the newest millionaire coach — and the first in women's basketball. Tennessee raised Summitt's salary yesterday to $1.125 million for next season and extended her contract for six years, through the 2011-12 season.

Geno Auriemma of Connecticut, the Lady Vols' biggest rival, will probably be the next coach to make more than $1 million a year. He signed a five-year contract in 2005 worth a total of $4.85 million. His salary for this coming season is $975,000, and it will increase to $1.05 million for 2007-8.

Summitt, 53, leads all Division I basketball coaches — men's and women's — with 913 career victories. During Summitt's tenure, Tennessee has won six national championships.

Summitt's salary was $975,000 last season. Over six years, her salary package will increase each year and average $1.3 million a year. The contract calls for Summitt to be paid $1.5 million in the final year.

xo_kathy 04-04-2007 09:32 AM

Guess she earned that salary last night!

Congrats to Sister Summit and the Lady Vols on their National Championship!!!

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee coach Pat Summitt had a big surprise for her three assistant coaches at the Lady Vols’ victory celebration Wednesday.

Holly Warlick and Nikki Caldwell, both former players, and fellow assistant Dean Lockwood were each presented a Mercedes SLK 280 roadster by a local dealership.

The three looked stunned and the players cheered in excitement and ran to the cars that were driven inside the city’s convention center, used for the event because Thompson-Boling Arena is undergoing renovations.
