SAE Suspended at Colorado State

According to local TV, the SAE chapter at Colorado State has been suspended after an underage woman was taken to the hospital with alcohol poisoning. She was allegedly drinking at the SAE house in Ft. Collins, which is supposed to be "dry."

The university and the fraternity are investigating to see if only one member of the chapter -- or more -- may have given the woman alcohol, and also whether she was anywhere else where she might have been drinking before going to the house, according to a fraternity official.

This is a particularly touchy subject at CSU because of the death of Samatha Spady last year.

Update: Six Double Shots in About 30 Minutes for 17-year-old

Channel 7 in Denver has some more details:

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news...77/detail.html

Brief excerpt from longer story:

A college freshman girl who went to the hospital after drinking alcohol had 12 shots of hard liquor at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house during a recruitment party, according to a Colorado State University report.
The 17-year-old girl described having six double shots of rum and whiskey within about 30 minutes, according to a report prepared by Anne Hudgens, the school's executive director of campus life. . . .

So I'm pretty sure Coloradoans are the worst partyers ever. They get caught for everything.

It's pretty tough not to get caught after the deaths on the Ft. Collins and Boulder campuses.

If I understood the story on TV news this evening, the CSU IFC has recommended that SAE be decertified.

They allegedly have a campus wide reputation for ignoring the dry housing rule adopted after the Samatha Spady death.

ETA, given the Spady situation and the other Colorado situations, how stupid would you have to be in a "dry" house to have forty people drinking, and giving an underage woman six double shots of hard liquor in the course of a half hour?

Actually, just the amount of liquor given to an inexperienced drinker in that time frame. It's probably pretty lucky that this young woman lived.

SAE was in the homecoming parade on Saturday - and had large letters on the front lawn....what gives? Are they a chapter still or not?

Also, what happened to Kappa Alpha Theta? BIG house, no letters, but a CSU Housing banner on it now? Did I miss ANOTHER CSU chapter going under?

Both SAE and KAT are still listed on CSU's Greek pages:

However, just found this update in local paper:

Delta;
I do agree with your posting. While looking up information on another posting, found this rather interesting letter to editor which is also saddly true:

Jon,

Good post, but while we all know it's true, it doesn't excuse the alleged fact that the drinking did happen in what is supposed to be a dry house and the alcohol was provided by people who should know better (I assume SAE has an alcohol awareness program).

ETA, after going back and reading the original story, it appears that the young woman was transported by ambulance from her dorm, not the SAE House:

"Ann Hudgens, executive director of campus life, who is responsible for overseeing the affairs of the Greek system, confirmed Tuesday that the student was transported by ambulance on the evening of Sept. 16 from her residence hall.

"It is my understanding that an ambulance run did occur, but not from the SAE house itself," Hudgens said."

Two other things to touch on. I recall that initially campus authorities were investigating to see if the woman might have been drinking in other places before and/or after the SAE House -- which is good in that they aren't simply on a fraternity witch hunt.

Second, it appears from one of the links Jon supplied that there is/was a grace period during which the chapter could appeal which could account for the Homecoming Parade appearance.

They allegedly have a campus wide reputation for ignoring the dry housing rule adopted after the Samatha Spady death.

Unfortunately, true even before the Spady incident, in fact, there was some rumor that LXA was shut down for Risk Management Issues due to something that actually happened at SAE, but could not be proven.

They have a long standing history of pushing the envelope, if not outright ignoring of the rules.

Tom Earp 10-10-2006 06:27 PM

It seems to happen to many times on this campus.

This has been discussed many times!

The School has an agenda. It seems to be working well with the Greeks there just playing into their hands for stupidity!

Of course Co. Cannot control anything when it comes to sports either!:o

Sigma Alpha Epsilon Closes Colorado State Chapter

According to the October 23 Denver Post, SAE HQ is closing the Colorado State chapter. The article indicates that a return to campus might be possible in a couple of years.

So sad to get a final word on this.

But, it seems that if they had a house, the Un. will soon buy it whether they try to come back in a few years.

Always tough to come back with no housing even though a big name Fraternity.:(

The October 23 Rocky Mountain Collegian has an article about the reputation, and quotes some opinions:

The fact I have to be associated with them bothers me. It ruins our image," Prosser said. "I feel sorry for the Greek system right now."

Well bless his heart.

Forgive me just jumping in here folk, but I was google'in around for this story and this little forum came up.

there is a blast from the past…

anyways,

While I had no love for the "Zoo on Laurel" and I know they probably should have shut down, I am sad to see that old house go. Shame, I feel for a lot of their alumni, not all them, just a lot. Looks like their house cleaning(s) missed a few spots…

CSU is shedding houses and chapters faster then I can keep track of, which is really sad. CSU has become a less and less Greek friendly campus in my memory since about the time…. Well since LXA got the axe… in the last 15ish years a lot of “old houses” have gotten the axe (one way or another), or come very close. In no real order: Sigma Nu, Lambda Chi Alpha, Beta (they are back but not really anything people would call a house as of yet), SigEp almost got the axe but lost a lot of manpower, Pi Kappa Phi almost. KKG almost, AXO+Pike (The homecoming float incident, Pike Came back from that suspension, only now to be re-unrecognized by the school for their latest stunts, but their nationals keeps them on the books)...Theta, Zeta, SimgaChi (comes closer every day....) DTD (close), PhiDelt (close a few times), PhiTau …. I am sure I missing a one or two…

I just hope that there are still schools with strong and decent greek systems when I have kids ready to go to college… I guess I better start saving for that out of state tuition.

You did miss a few, and updating the status of each house is harrowing....ATO closed mid 1990's, Sigma Chi took over their house (which is now an emptly, bulldozed lot)...Sigma Nu closed 1998 - house razed, now a snazzy townhome lot....Alpha Phi - closed 1993? - now a fraternity house....AXO closed due to the parade stunt, now a Christian-themed dorm house....LXA closed 2000 - that house, still owned by LXA, became "home" for Sigma Pi until Samantha Spady died, and it is also now a christian dorm...Phi Tau was back, but apparently didn't last long. Theta house now a CSU owned dorm....SAE house is now sadly all boarded up.

When did Zeta close? Letters were still on the house two weeks ago....

Hi all, I am the Eminent Preceptor for the CSU chapter of SAE. I would like to let everyone know that we are back on campus, and are ready to have a great rush in the fall. I am originally from the University of New Mexico, but transferred here last fall.

We have definitely gone through quite a few hoops, and there are a few more to go through; but we feel as though we are now ready to have a fresh start at CSU.

As far as our house goes, the alumni have decided to sell it to a corporation and have it bulldozed in order to build a new "lodge" in which we will be able to have some of the rooms. The rest will be rented out to other students and the first floor will probably be a Starbucks, or something to that effect.

Whether or not the alumni have sold us out, we as a chapter have no choice and we will take the cards we have been given and will do our best to restore our reputation here at CSU.
