Fraturnaty/Sorority NickNames
Which fraternities give out Nicknames to their new inducted members?? (EX like in Animal house) My Fraternity has been doing this for years, but after asking my friend from back at home who happens to be in the same frat, but at another school he told me they didn't give out nick names. It looks like I’ll be taking on a pledge for my little brother for the first time and I also would like some suggestions on really good names to help me come up with a really good name for who ever becomes my pledge.
Do any other frats/sororities give out nicknames, and what is yours?? My name is Roots BTW. |
I think this is a joke, but.....
Is "Fraturnaty" a nickname for "fraternity?"
Many GLOs give out "nicknames" but they are referred to as pledge names or line names, etc. If this is supposedly a chapter tradition already, you should be able to talk to your chapter brothers about suggestions and find out how you all usually assign names. We don't know your chapter, the upcoming pledges, etc. |

You asked the question after stating "I also would like some suggestions on really good names to help me come up with a really good name for who ever becomes my pledge." So, my comments stand. |
My chapter did nick names for our "families." For instance, my family is called the "Peeps" family (named for those sweet Easter candies and the way an alum laughed--she made a "peep" noise). We even took it a step further and did individual names, which I prefer not to mention. Haha. At one point, all of the sisters even wrote cheers for each other that described us--some were really good, but some were pretty embarassing and I wouldn't want people other than my good friends to hear mine. EVER. :)

Pledge, Pledgeface, Toilet, Dan, Dorfman, Donkey Lips, Barbara Walters, Hey, Fat Head, Steve, etc. etc. etc.

dumbass is a preferable one, but I plan on using toilet often this coming semester. Also "hey you" works.

nicknames
A few years ago we had one guy who we really wanted and some guy we were taking a chance on as a package deal because the two were best friends. So we called them Steve and Steve's friend respectively.

My sorority does that. My name is Zip it

My Frat does that!
The nickname that they gave me is: Shell Toe! I know that sounds corney but, the reason is because that's the only type of shoe that I used to wear. So I suggest that's what you should do is find something about that person and play off of that.

Arg. It's THIS thread again.
Everytime I see "fraturnaty" I want to shake somebody. |
We do this every semester. We have our pledge retreat, usually somewhere in the mountains, the pledges get their Big Bros and the Big Bros give them nicknames...some stick most don't, but they all get named. Mine is one of few that has stuck, my Big Bro named me Tweak because of my occasional energetic, odd behavior, I reminded him of Tweek from South Park. Nicknames, in my experience over the last couple of years, if you want them to stick, should be short and easy to say, one word, ect. Examples from my chapter that have stuck is Barf, Myrtle, Shaggy, Lurch, Tweak. But not all one-word names stick. Examples of lame nicknames that no matter how hard you try just dont stick are Radio, Sack, Whammy, El Culo Titre, 9 Ball, Reno, Little Bean. Get to know the guy you're gonna take, look at how he acts, his personality, go from there...or you can just call him Queef...I've always wanted to name a pledge Queef (i dont know if thats how ya spell it, but who cares, it sounds the same)...

In OPA, we don't name the pledge class until initiation. The class is named based off the number of girls they had (eg. my pledge class was "9 Dancing Ladies"), and every girl is named off of that theme (eg. in my pledge class, we were all named after dances). The names don't really get used, especially since you're already a sister by the time you learn your own, but it's a cute thing for us to add to Rose Night. :)

I liked space dock conception. My step brother joined after I did, so we named him obviously adopted. |

Nicknames
The way we do it is that after the 7th or 8th week of pledging (out of 10) we give out pledges their fraternity nickname. Ideas are given by the brothers at a normal meeting and they are based of of things the pledges have done throughout their pledging. Only brothers know the true meaning of the nickname, although some are pretty obvisious. The big brother has the final say in the nickname. Once the name is given that is how we refer to people, this is especialyl helpfull if you have 2 people with the same name like mike, or ed or something. No nickname is ever repeated so when you say "XYZ did this" everyon knows who you are talking about. Some nicknames last outside of meetings, others do not. My nickname is Glick, a lot of people call me that. One if my brother is names Tramp, and he is refered to by his real name.
Nicknames are a great way to connect with your organization better. Once you get a nickname you feel more accepted and pat of the group, and hopefully this makes you a better brother. |
We do class names, family names, and line names. Each class gets a name based on their letter. (We're officially the Luscious Lambdas, but our mom always likes to call us the Lambda Lesbians...)
Then family names, these are made up by whoever's first in the family, so since we're small, probably a Charter. They can be really fancy or simple, it's up to whoever does it, but generally they're some kind of commentary on the member and their line, what they're like and all. Then line names, which are suggested by everyone and decided by your big, given out at some point during pledge (ours were given out at the end, but our sisters at another school nearby got theirs right away) and then you find out what your nickname means at the end. Mine's Cherry Blossom. :p I think more often than not, they don't really get used, although they are usually used when someone's putting your name on a present, or when people are being cutesy and writing on each other's Facebook. :P |
I think mostly all of them............
Don't they all give out nicknames?

My fraternity does it i guess. They are called line names though. Each line has a specific name like me and my lb's (Line Brother) is Brain Damage. But we each have individual line names also. Mine is Amnesia and his is Seizure. So i guess yea my frat does it and we also have numbers on line i'm a number 1 and he is a number 4. thus my sig

Can we not post silly sorority nicknames? Thanks.
ETA: Also, let's stop bumping this thread. Either that or someone fix the title. OTW will shake someone, and baby Jesus cries. |
As long as she doesn't shake baby Jesus.
And yeah, we all know negative nicknames, that wasn't the original question, don't share them. |
When I was initiated i had a nickname (random) but my chapter doesn't do it anymore, it kind of fell apart in the year since I've graduated.
