JocelynC's friends recruitment thread @ Kent
Well I wasn't going to post this until later, but I'm going to hang out with my friend this weekend and we're going to catch up about alot of things, including recruitment and her experiences.
First off, I'm formerly JocelynC but I just changed my username to KSUViolet06- I don't want to confuse any of you! We haven't talked for about a month because we go to the same school and since she was a PNM and I'm an active sorority member, we had to follow the silence rules. Some background, she's a sophomore transfer and was looking to make friends and she certainly found some this past weekend at bid day. She just finished rush and wanted me to share her experiences. As much as I'd love to do this all in one post, I am really busy so it'll have to be done in chunks. There are 7 sororities that participate in recruitment, 6 NPC and 1 local: Alpha Xi Delta Alpha Phi Delta Gamma Delta Zeta Sigma Sigma Sigma Phi Gamma Pi (local sorority) Chi Omega Since we're all girls I figured I'd give the chapters designer fashion label names: (note: these are not in order of the list above) Gucci Prada Christian Dior Louis Vuitton Fendi Chanel Dolce & Gabbana We've talked on the phone since bid night and we started sort of discussing the pre-recruitment events like Greek Info Night, here's a little of what she had to say: Greek Info Night Every sorority decorates a table with shirts/scrapbooks/lots of stuff and the PNMs spend 5 or so minutes at each table (in groups with their Rho Chi's) talking to the members and asking questions. After they've spent a certain amount of time with each sorority, they are free to leave their groups and walk around on their own and ask questions. She was really excited to meet all the different groups. She has friends in Fendi and Chanel from classes and work, but she didn't know much about the other 5. She met her 2 Rho Chi's and they started walking around. Everyone seemed so nice! They answered all of her questions, no matter how many she asked. It's impossible to have a fave at this point, but she said a few did stick out in her mind because of their philanthropies (some of which are close to her heart). She also got the schedule of events for the next 2 weekends: Saturday 9/10- Go Greek Day (visit all 7) Sunday 9/11- Philanthropy/Financial Day (visit a max of 7- groups cut for grades) Friday 9/15- House Tours (visit a max of 4) Sunday 9/17-Preference (visit a max of 2) So she was pretty pumped to "Go Greek" at this point! She was way excited to find sisters. That's all for tonight. The next update will be of Go Greek Day! |
Tell your friend congratulations on whichever house she has made her home! I can't wait to hear from this one. I'm pulling for Chanel - always a classic.

Well it's time for my next update of her story.
Well she had to be at the student center and ready to go bright and early @ 9 am! That was no problem for her because she was so excited. Today, the PNMs visited all 7 chapters. It was just your standard first day of recruitment parties. Here's her rundown of Day 1 from her notes and from our recent conversations: Christian Dior- Her first of the day. These girls were quite energetic she says. Their outfits were cute and they were really easy to talk to. This group had a cute room and neat pics and books on the tables. Dolce & Gabbana- These girls are nice. One of her rushers must have been nervous or something because she repeated herself alot. But overall she did like these girls. Fendi- She knew some girls here and ended up talking to one of them for a bit. That was neat. The conversation came easy with these girls. Chanel- These girls were one of her faves today. They all looked really cute and the conversation kept flowing with every rusher she had. They seemed really sweet. She also really liked this group's philanthropy. Louis Vuitton- This chapter was so so. It was her first after lunch so she was kinda sluggish and had a hard time really getting into the conversation. It's not that she didn't like them, but she couldn't really focus. She really hoped to get them before lunch the next day so she could pay better attention. Gucci- She wasn't sure what to really think of these girls, since she hadn't heard of them prior to recruitment. They were really polite and she could tell they worked hard on preparing everything. She was getting tired though so it was really hard to interact with them. Prada- It sucked that she got these girls last because she was DEAD tired by now but she LOVES these girls based on today. She tried SO hard to be upbeat and energetic because these girls were so sweet and she had alot in common with like 2 girls who rushed her here. She says she got a really good feeling when she left here, even though it was the end of the day. She was really enjoying recruitment at this point and was so excited for the next day! So that was Day 1. Day 2 is Philanthropy/Financial Day. The PNMs do a craft related to the sororities' philanthropy. The chapters also hand out financial sheets detailing chapter dues/fees/fines that they get to take home (the only thing the PNMs ARE allowed to leave the room with). PNMs visit all 7 chapters that day UNLESS they are cut from some for grades. It's getting late so you'll have to wait til sometime this week to see if she goes back to all 7 or if she gets cut from some! |

I know, I know. I'd love to be able to sit down and write this in one sitting but I'm a senior with an internship, grad school apps, and sorority life on my plate.:)
I won't be home til late tonight so there won't be an update, but I will go ahead and tell you guys now that she didn't get cut from any chapters for grades. So she returned to all 7 for Day 2. |

Well I have a minute or 2 here so I'll give you guys the rundown of Day 2 (Philanthropy/ Financial Day):
Louis Vuitton- She was glad to have them first today since she was way tired at their party the day before. She got a better impression of them today, and their philanthropy presentation made her tear up a little. It was a good party and she'd really like to come back there. Christian Dior- She liked them yesterday and liked them more today. Their decorations and set up were SO cute. She really hit it off with her rushers here too. She really wanted to come back there for 3rd party. Prada- Wow, she already liked these girls a whole lot. This was definitely the highlight of her day. They were all so so pretty and nice. She hit it off with a couple of girls. She really really hoped that they'd ask her back. Their craft was really simple but cute. Fendi- This group was right before lunch and she was starving, but this craft was really fun. She thought it was a really neat idea. These girls were friendly. Dolce & Gabbana- She felt about the same about these girls as she did about Fendi. They're nice girls and if they invited her back she'd go. They're so so. Chanel- It was late in the day when she got these girls, but she liked them alot the day before and she hopes they invite her back. She tried to be as upbeat as possible because she really would like to come back here for the next round. She got a great feeling coming into this party. This group was tied with Prada as her fave at this point. Gucci- It was the end of the day and she was SO tired, but she was polite to these girls. They are nice, but she doesn't think they're for her. She made a point of telling me that she didn't 'hate' them, she just didn't feel like they were right for her and she wasn't sure if she'd go back if invited. After today, this is how they ranked in her mind: 1. TIE: Prada and Chanel 2. LV 3. Dior 4. TIE: Fendi and Dolce & Gabbana 5. Gucci The next group of parties are House Tours/ Sisterhood. PNMs can return to 4. She told me she loved both Prada and Chanel alot and at the end of those 2 days really saw herself there. LV and Dior were both great and she wanted to go back there too. She said she wouldn't mind going back to Fendi or Dolce & Gabbana either and seeing if she felt stronger about them after 3rd. She also told me that while she felt bad for saying it, she just didn't see herself in Gucci. From what she saw of them, their personalities just don't fit well with hers. My friend is one of those people who is really friendly. She is always pleasant and tries hard to be nice to anyone she comes in contact with. So the concept of dropping chapters was kind of scary to her, since she wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. She told me she DREADED getting her invites back because of the possibility that she'd have to drop a chapter if she got more than 4 back. It's not like she HATED anyone, she just had better experiences at certain groups. Well, I need to go get ready for my internship, but I'll update later on this week about where she was invited back to and how she felt about it. |

Well ladies, here's the update:
She went to get her invites after 2 days of parties. She said she was so nervous that day, she didn't know what to do with herself! She was invited back to 5/7 sororities. She received invites back from: Prada Christian Dior Louis Vuitton Dolce & Gabbana Fendi Gucci She was a little upset that Chanel didn't invite her back. But she got over it when she realized that she got to go back to PRADA, one of her favorites at this point! She was pretty excited to go back to LV and Dior since they were very good groups too! She was reasonably excited about her invitations until she realized that she could only go back to 4. She sat there for awhile, then her SRC told her that she needed to think of who to drop since she had to drop 2. As bad a she felt, she was for sure dropping Gucci. She just didn't feel comfortable there and didn't want to go back there and waste their time and hers. She knew she wouldn't accept a bid from them if she got one, so there was no point in going back-but she still felt bad. Well, she was for sure going back to Prada, LV, and Dior. The one she couldn't decide was #4. So the #4 spot was between Dolce & Gabbana and Fendi. Just so you know how much she didn't really know who to choose, I'll tell you it took her almost an hour to figure out who to drop. They were both good groups, but she didn't feel too strongly about either of them the first weekend. She wanted to go back to both to see if either of them grew on her during House Tours. But she had to pick one. In the end, she dropped Fendi and Gucci. So she would return to these 4 for 3rd party: Prada Louis Vuitton Christian Dior Dolce & Gabbana By this point, she was just getting worn out and wanted it to be next weekend so she could go to the last 2 parties and finally be in a sorority! I'll update later with how 3rd parties went (House Tours).:) |
jocelyn, i am so glad that things are going well for your friend, and that she was ticked off, not crushed, when she did not get an invite back to one of her top twos. it sounds like she is having a great recruitment. best wishes to her for continued good results!!

Hey guys! Here's the update of how House Tours went for her:
Well that Friday afternoon, she and the rest of her SRC group met at the student center. All the PNMs meet there and take buses to the sorority houses they'll be visiting. During this round, the sororities give house tours and each sororities' party has a theme (i.e. XYZ and the City). Food is served and there is a slide show or video shown. Dress is church attire or something you'd wear to a wedding. The busride over to her first party was SO nervewrecking! She couldn't hear herself think over all the girls saying "OMG I can't wait to see the LV house!" or "OMG I so want to go Dior!" It was really annoying. Anyway, here's the rundown of her 3rd parties: Louis Vuitton- This was her first of the night. It was so odd because she liked them alot after 2nd party, but today, they just really didn't seem interested in her. The girl who gave her the house tour was someone she hadn't talked to before, and she kept asking her the same kind of basic questions (name/major/dorm/etc). There was a point when they were done with the house tour that the girl just kind of stood there and didn't talk to her, til another sister came up and started talking. The house itself was nice, and the rooms are a nice size, but after tonight, she isn't sure if she sees herself as a sister here. Dolce & Gabbana- She honestly wasn't initially excited to come back here, since she had felt lukewarm about them the previous 2 days. The first girl who met her at the door was VERY chatty. So much so that she didn't get a chance to ask questions during the house tour (which they went through very fast). The rooms here are kind of crowded, but the layout is nice. The video was okay. She wished she could've actually talked more to these girls. She left here not really knowing if she saw herself here either. Christian Dior- She was glad she came back here. These girls were friendly to her and the conversation was good. The house had an odd layout and she wasn't sure if she liked it. The video was cute. She had a good time here, but she felt like it was more of a "friendly" good time. When she left here, she said she saw these girls as great friends, but she didn't get "warm fuzzies" here at all. She didn't feel strongly about them as sisters. Prada- She was SO excited to go back here that she couldn't STOP smiling. She had a great conversation with every girl who rushed her. The theme was adorable. She really enjoyed the house tour. This house was her favorite of the day because of it's unique set up. The video clips and pictures made her CRY. She says she got "that feeling." She left here and she could REALLY see herself as a Prada. Since 3rd parties are on Friday, the PNMs pick up their Pref invites on Saturday. Preference parties are on Sunday morning and Bid Night is at 6pm that night. PNMs could only attend 2 sororities for Preference this year, so she was really nervous about possibly having to drop 2 more chapters if they all invited her back. She told me that waiting to see if Prada invited her back was like, the longest 24 hours of her life. I'll try to update soon about where she went to pref! I'm going to a football game today so I can't promise you guys anything til maybe tomorrow. Later :) |

I'm back!
Well, 3rd parties are on a Friday, and Preference parties and Bid Night aren't til Sunday. So the PNMs have Saturday to rest and pick up their Pref invites. She had to wait longer than most. She was in the last group to receive their invites because her SRC couldn't meet with them until 7pm Saturday night, so she was on pins and needles basically ALL day! Well, when she she opened her invite card, the first thing she noticed was that Prada was not on her list. She started to cry and actually was going to get up, walk out, and just quit recruitment. She asked her SRC in tears what had happened and why they didn't invite her back. She made it a point to tell me that her SRC was the main reason behind her staying in recruitment. She was truly awesome. When she went to leave, her SRC told her "Hey well look at these other awesome groups who wanted you to come back. They're all great and I'm sure any of them would love to see you back tomorrow. You'd be an asset to any of them. I'll give you all the time you need to think it over." So my friend said she dried her tears and sat back down to look at her invites. She was invited to Preference at: Louis Vuitton Dolce & Gabbana Christian Dior Since PNMs could only return to 2 groups for Preference this year, she had to drop someone. That was a headache since she'd just gotten over being dropped by her favorite but she had no choice. She remembered sort of liking Dior, so she wanted to keep them. But then she had to decide spot #2. She had a not so good 3rd party at LV, but she liked them every other round. She had been so so about Dolce & Gabbana throughout recruitment. She remembered kind of wanting to see them more. She decided to Pref: Christian Dior Dolce & Gabbana I'll update sometime this week on how those parties went! |
I'm glad she stuck it out, and I have a feeling so is she right now :)

Sunday morning, my friend got up and put on her pretty preference dress and boarded the bus to her parties.
She decided to take her SRC's advice and go. She wasn't really sure what to do. She didn't really know if she could feel the same about these groups as she did about Prada. Her first was Dolce & Gabbana. The set up and everything was great. But yet again, she found herself not clicking with these women. During preference cerremony, she looked around and saw other girls crying tears of happiness. She knew that she wouldn't be as happy as any of those girls would be to got a bid from them later on a Bid Night. She almost wished she had dropped them and kept another group for this party. She left here totally sure that she didn't see herself as a Dolce. Her last was Christian Dior. She told herself that if she got the same vibe here that she got from Dolce that she was just going to drop out. She wanted to find a sorority that she felt at home with. She sort of crossed her fingers that this one would be better than her first pref, and that she would see something that made her feel like she belonged here. She most certainly did. The girl who preffed her here was someone she remembered having a good conversation with during 3rd. She told the girl how she got cut from Prada and suprisingly, this girl had a similar story about being dropped from a fave and being confused. She just got a really friendly vibe from this girl. The preference ceremony was amazing she says. Then, she says, something just 'clicked' and she decided that she wanted to be a Dior. The girls were so sweet to her all along, even when she had her heart set on another sorority. She walked out the door knowing that she wanted (and this is a quote from her) "no one else but Dior". I'll update later with how she ranked and how things turned out! |

And the way the story was going, I was sure she was going Prada and I figured that since you wrote this after-the-fact it would be less like the real, day-by-day ups and downs. I thought, "Well, if she gets dropped by Prada later in the week she wouldn't let us know that's where she had her heart set". However, you tricked us! I can't wait to find out where your friend finds her home away from home.
