local question
hi all! i will try not to make this too long but i kind of have a lot to ask...sorry in advance;)...i am very interested in starting a local sorority on my campus but i am completely clueless..i have all the forms necessary to be acknowledged by the university but other than that i have no idea where to start...see i have always wanted to be involved in a sorority and i got married last june with the intentions of rushing in the fall until i unexpectedly got pregnant in july...i realize that sororities take up a lot of your time and between work, school, baby, and marriage that is not something i have much of..i am very happily married and my son was just the icing on the cake :p but i would still like to be involved without taking too much time away from my family so i thought i could start a sorority for people that don't have time to dedicate to traditional organizations for one reason or another..i have played with a few names, colors and things like that but honestly i am just lost...does anyone have any suggestions...i also have no idea how to get people interested once i have the basics covered...anyone can email me at ashleycamille@hotmail.com or just post on here...thanks for your time..again sorry it was so long i just thought some background info might be necessary to understand why i want to start this organization...thanks again

I thought about that...but I figured purposely subjecting someone to BlACKROSE's posts would be considered "Cruel & Unusual"... (not that this poster has much better typing skills:rolleyes: ). |

Sorry to be a killjoy, but I just don't get where a young mom/student thinks that it would be less of a time committment to found a new student organization, actively recruit members and plan activities for them than to be a member of an existing campus group where all you need to do is show up, and where taking on a leadership role is up to you.
You don't need to be starting a sorority/campus organization. Any local founder you speak to will tell you it takes a ton of work, effort and more work over years, some disappointment, a lot of late nights, and yes, more work. Doesn't quite sound like that is what you are looking for. Get involved with another established activity on campus. |

I was looking into student organizations and sororities a while ago. I had been recently married and i wasnt sure of the requirements so I asked one of the girls I had class with that was in a sorority if it was ok if you were married. She informed me that being married was fine but having kids "was not okay at all." At the time I didnt realize I was pregnant so I didnt even worry about that remark but when I found out I was that kind of turned me away from the traditional sororities on campus.

I think it depends on the school and the chapter. I have advised chapters with older women with children.
One woman with younger children did not bring them to chapter events (never to meetings) although if we were having an informal picnic or something of that nature she would. She was looking for something to have for herself, so it was not a conflict that her children were not involved. But its entirely possible that the culture at other schools is different in this regard. |
That is a shame that people who are often ridiculed find the need to ridicule others!
Well,to all of you who feel the need to criticize me for some minor or major misspelling or grammar issues on a chat line, excuse me but you all don't grade my papers so i really do not care. You may feel that I really proofread these comments as if they are being graded. Well no, I do not do that. I'm
usually only responding to an idea while I'm in the middle of doing some home work assignment. (THAT I MUST ADD I HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED MY ASSOSICATE DEGREE AND AM MAINTAINING A 3.1 GPA WHILE BEING A MOTHER OF THREE VERY INTELLIGENTCHILDREN MY OLDEST WHO HAPPENS TO BE IN THRID GRADE SCORES AT A SIX GRADE READING LEVEL AND WE STARTED DOING HOOKED ON PHONICS AS A GAME WHEN HE WAS IN FIRST GRADE SO YES, HOOKED ON PHONICS WORKS FOR ME), but any way i will agree with some of the others on this post. That trying to start an organization from scratch is difficult most of our members have children three years of age and older, and the couple of sisters that do have very young children have chose not to hold a major position. I do not know what exactly you are missing but I did most of my research to start my sorority thru local greeks webpage. If you would like some help starting your own chapter for non traditional students,I would talk to your NTS office first. Here you may meet others who share with your desire. If you would like any info on Mu Omicron Mu, I would be pleased to send it to you. |

BlACKROSE,
It would be one thing if you did have a "few major and minor misspelling or grammar issues", but the fact is that there are so many, it makes your posts almost unreadable. This may be just a "chat line", but if you read a post or six, you'll see that the majority of posters take the time, AND ARE RESPECTFUL ENOUGH, to follow basic grammar and spelling rules. Now, I am a horrible speller myself, and you can tell which posts that I don't take the time to spellcheck (which now that GC has a spellchecker, aren't very many0 - but that's the point...I take the time to use the spellchecker...it's courteous to other posters. |
Mu Omicron Mu Colligate Mother Sorority
Alpha Chapter Dekalb Area Will be sponsoring there annual just have fun day event to promote excercise this is any American Heart Assiocation Event on 9/30/06 Blackrose, here is another post from you in the "Events" area of Greekchat. Obviously you are advertising a philanthropy event sponsored by your chapter. That's a great idea! But since this post is for an event representing your sorority, why wouldn't you check the spelling, grammar, etc. so that you can present your sisters to the world as the educated mothers they are? |

In the end it took a huge toll on my relationship, but we worked past it. However, if asked to do it again? I would hire an assistant! Another one of my founding sisters was married as well and we tried to reach out to the "non-traditional" students. Most just did not have the time to dedicate themselves to a starting organization. Just something to consider. *Also just because you cant be "active" you can still be a valuble asset as an Alumnae initiate and still participate in all the fun stuff. |

I am wondering how long it will be before some of these women band together and form Alpha Iota, the first virtual sorority for any and all who are interested, whatever there age, collegiate status, or sanity level.

AIS DO NOT GO TO MIXERS. AIS DO NOT BUILD HOMECOMING FLOATS. AIS DO NOT LIVE IN THE SORORITY HOUSE. AIS DO NOT ATTEND CHAPTER MEETINGS. AIS DO NOT ATTEND PHILANTHROPY EVENTS. AIS DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN GREEK WEEK ACTIVITIES. Not that there aren't fun things that ALUMNAE chapters do....but if these are the main things you want to do, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT AI. |
Maybe she was asking the OP to consider her sorority, DZO, for AI.

And regarding spelling errors... posters who point them out are attempting to feel better about themselves by belittling others. Alpha Frog, why don't you concentrate on trying to form an intelligent response to the poster, rather than trying pedantry? |

Seriously, pedantry? Is that the word of the day? Were you attempting to use it in a sentance? |
Quote:
Dude, not a single one of BlACKROSE's posts read like they were written by a high school graduate. I think pointing that out IS an intelligent response. If she wants to be taken seriously, she'll construct her sentences in a way that doesn't scream 13 year old who just discovered Myspace WOOOO! |
I have to commend you on your website. For someone starting a new sorority, you have definately thought this through. I love the fact that your mascot is a kangaroo...how clever!

I would also like to thank Alpha Frog, I read your response and you are correct that I need to present my grammar skills more appropriately. I would like to point out that in one of my responses I was purposely using (as if, and like) in between all my statements to show that there is no white language or black language. That their is only broken english or correct english... I am sorry I forgot to capitalize the word English. I would like to correct you on your statement about my website. My sorority's site is very professional and grammar correct. With all that aside I would like to thank blueangel for expressing what, I think so well. I also wonder how so many people who have watched their organization be ridiculed for lack of national backing or not having a house or for what ever reason someone felt they were better than you, be so quick to shoot down some one else for trying something new? |
You should not feel the need to apologize or proofread other's posts. A couple typos here and there are not a big deal. But per message board etiquette, it is challenging to read any person's posts if written in all CAPs or to read any person's post if that post has many, many grammatical/spelling errors.
Also, fighting with people on GC is like herding cats. It's not worth it. And this is just an anonymous message board-- don't take it personally. I, for one, think the idea of a "sorority for mothers" is silly. But your members seem to enjoy it IRL and at the end of the day, that's the only thing that matters. |
