Big Sis Gift Ideas??

I know its usually the little sis that gets spoiled with the gifts but I wanted to put something together for my new big. I'm not really sure what to get her because shes already got loads of zeta stuff and I'm on kind of a limited budget. I can make the majority of the gifts (i've got some artistic skill) I just dont have a lot of supplies (i live in the dorms). Any ideas?

Picture frames are always a good gift in my opinion. Especially if you have a picture of the two of you. My little got me a picture frame and a really nice card and that was enough for me. Also if you get a plain one you can decorate it anyway you want to make it more personal.

Other ideas could involve symbols of the sorority or if your family has any specfic name or tradition something related to that.

The cutest gift I ever saw was when one little got her big a teddy bear(kds symbol) and dressed it in a child's halloween costume of a frog (her family's mascot). Everyone was super jealous and it was the cutest thing!

1st Suggestion: Leave your dorm and go to hobby lobby.

adpiucf 09-15-2006 11:45 AM

Get a picture frame that has room for two images-- put a photo of you on one side and poem about sisterhood in the other.

Matching letter shirts

Write her a sisterhood celebration letter and get permission to read it aloud during chaper

Get a container and draw on it with paint pens. Fill it with candy or fresh baked treats

Build-A-Bear

Decorate her door with posters and balloons

Halloween will be here next month! Make a date to carve pumpkins together

Have a slumber party or go to a movie together or get ice cream together

Maybe get her some white violets in a nice pot. If you don't find any, you could probably buy a Zeta flowerpot and buy seeds and plant them in that.

Got a mailing from IHQ that included a postcard ad from Oxford Circus Clothing.
Cute stuff!!

I'm posting an Alpha Gam related link, of course, lol.

(Oh, I just noticed the $32 price but you might find something else!)

Neat idea, but I feel like I could make that stuff myself!

How bout buying a plain pillowcase and decorating it. Or even one of those plain decorative pillows and decorating that.

Decorate a sleepshirt and put something on it like "world's best big sis".

My little made me a pin box by painting a plain wooden box and decopodging (sorry bout the spelling) violets on it. I still use it 8 years later.

That site has so many cute things! Such a nice change from traditional lettered clothing. :)

Whoa you must be kidding right? Click around a bit more. Almost everything on there is completely unwearable.
Such as the "Heart on the boob" shirt:

The "wrinkly and poorly chosen fabric" pants:
http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.c..._1913_55558953

The "I wish I was Rainbrow brite" vest:
http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.c..._1912_14640250

And the slightly see-through "It's a Dove because it has a olive branch in it's mouth" shirt
http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.c..._1913_67166129

Last, but of course not least.. on sale... the poorly embroidered "They're ladybugs not ornaments I swear" shirt

It's like someone had a good idea and ran with it... in the opposite direction.

adpiucf 09-16-2006 05:34 PM

Dude. That is clearly a duck with an olive branch in its mouth.

Quack. Quack.

From an expert on all things quacky, that is most certainly NOT a duck. Ducks have more rounded beaks whereas that one is pointed.

My first thought was "Hey, why is that penguin chewing on a stick"?

Gads - that stuff is just horribly made..good idea, poorly executed.

Didn't we already have a thread about this company somewhere??

Okay, it may not be super high-quality, and some of the designs are questionable. But my point was that it was a nice change from the traditional t-shirt with stitched letters.

I agree with PenguinTrax. A good idea, not the best execution.

Here's the thread where we discuss Oxford Circus...

Damnit...it's sold out. I wanted one too!! I guess I'll just have to write the lady and see if she'll custom-make one. Or I could just go to Walmart and get a $5 polo and $2.50 worth of puffy paint...

SockPuppet3 09-18-2006 01:41 PM

Maybe the use of the word "Circus" in their company name should say something. Like, they already know their stuff can't be taken seriously so they call themselves OxfordCircus. Or maybe one of the company peeps got his/her ideas from the latest Barnum & Bailey show.

Xidelt 09-18-2006 01:54 PM

You know, I can sew a little and I have all this old quilting fabric my grandma gave me....maybe I'll start my own line of questionable-quality sorority clothing.....

Dammit, Oxford Circus beat me to it!

Buttonz 09-19-2006 02:31 AM

*shudder* I'm so glad they don't have anything in my size....

33girl 09-19-2006 09:34 AM

YIPES.

Flower edges have been left raw on purpose...with each wash the edges roll & the flower gets cuter & cuter!

I would say that's a matter of opinion.

AlphaFrog 09-19-2006 09:44 AM

Just found this little jewel on their site too:

Quote:

**CHARITY**

You have a philanthropy...why shouldn't we? A portion of every purchase is donated to the National Eating Disorders Association. Visit our corporate site for more information on Oxford Circus' charity efforts. http://oxfordcircusclothing.com/cassiespage.html
Eating disorders?? Could we please stereotype Sorority women just a little more please??

tunatartare 09-19-2006 09:49 AM

Slightly ironic how their charity is the Eating Disorders Foundation, yet their clothing only goes up to a size 8.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

You can never go wrong with a self-decorated paddle (Yes, I know that's old fashioned). If you attend a college that has a greek paraphenalia store in close proximity to its campus, then you can buy a blank paddle for anywhere between $10-$18 depending on what style and size you buy, buy letters for you and your big's names for about $0.50 per letter, greek letters for about $1.50 per letter, and the words "Big Sis" and "Little Sis" for about $2 each. Paint can be bought for cheap at Michaels' (if they have those where you live). Then you can decorate your paddle however you wish and give it as a homemade present to your big.
