"The First Dance" songs

For some reason I always think about what slow songs I want to be played at my wedding, especially the first dance (not sure why, seeing as I'm only 20 and I don't even have a boyfriend at the moment!). Can anyone think of any really good songs they've heard at weddings, or that were played at your own wedding?

As of now, my top pick for my first dance is "Because you loved me" by Celine Dion. :)

tld221 09-10-2006 10:24 PM

oh gawd...

i see youre going for uber-cliche?

you cant just pick a song as your first dance song, regardless of whoever "the one" is gonna be. what if said guy is less "because you loved me" and more "sexual healing?"

not that marvin gaye should be your #1 choice. my point being that different guys will give you a different "feel" for what that song will be.

"Because You Loved Me" was our exit song. Our first dance song was "A Whole New World."

The band we hired had a very good repertoire, but only a few songs were good first-dance or exit songs. You'd think that a band that specialized in weddings would have more suitable songs... but what drew us to hire them was the fact that they would adjust their volume and sound balance to the available space, rather than just blasting their music at top volume. Our guests could hold conversations without shouting or stepping outside.

I'd recommend this band to anyone in the Boston area, if they're still playing (our wedding was 7 years ago).

I like that song by Nine Inch Nails about animals.

That is a good one. Two Live Crew has some nice tunes as well.

Our wedding song was "So Far Away" by Staind.
Definitely not the traditional sappy love song, but it was us.

PinkandGreenJ 09-11-2006 08:35 AM

Mine was "the way you look tonight"- the original frank sinatra version, not the tony bennett one in my best friend's wedding.

AOIIBrandi 09-11-2006 09:19 AM

Ours was "How do I" the Leanne Rhimes version. Now I like Keith Urban's "Making Memories of Us".

AlphaFrog 09-11-2006 09:21 AM

Ours was "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge...but a couple from our church sung it, and it was beautiful.

adpiucf 09-11-2006 09:51 AM

You really shouldn't put the cart before the horse. Who says you're ever going to get married? :p

Still BLUTANG 09-11-2006 11:04 AM

i've heard At Last- Etta James and With You- Tony Terry many many many times as a first dance selection.

i think these are nice choices as well:
Love of My Life- Brian McKnight
On This Day - Fertile Ground
Rythm of Life (even the dance mix!) - Kindred the Family Soul

Hegemon 09-11-2006 11:46 AM

When we were first introduced at the reception, we had "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen played :D Our first dance song was "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds. Mr. Folds is my favorite and I could listen to that song on repeat for hours :)

ADqtPiMel 09-11-2006 08:40 PM

We're using "Looking Back on Today" by the Ataris, although I lobbied hard for "What's Your Fantasy."

Hegemon, we're using a Ben Folds song for the father/daughter dance.

KatieKate1244 09-12-2006 12:23 AM

Some friends and I were just talking about this the other day...

My choice is "Flowers in the Window" by Travis. I can't take a lot of love songs, but I really like this one.

WVU alpha phi 09-12-2006 01:29 AM

I like Shania Twain "From This Moment" too. I'm a big country girl but my parents aren't so this may not go over too well, haha.

KSigkid 09-12-2006 09:18 AM

My wife and I used "The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra as our first dance, and Sinatra "All the Way" for the bridal party dance.

Rio_Kohitsuji 09-12-2006 10:06 PM

Dusty has already picked ours, it will be "Desparado" sung by Johnny Cash

My best friend and her husband danced to LL Cool J's "Doin' It" for their first dance. Nothing's wrong with staying away from sappy. :)

The Conservinator thinks it would be hilarious to use "Thank God I'm a Country Boy."  When and if the occasion comes where we need to pick I'm just going to lie and tell him the DJ doesn't have that song. That way we can do the Apache Dance instead. ;)

Most of my friends have used Frank Sinatra. One of my sorority sisters used "Fishin in the Dark" and I thought that was pretty cute.

There is nothing funny about the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Baby J would be ashamed at you. ;)

The Lutheran in me finds calling Marriage a Sacrament in the first place pretty funny.:p

/Not quite as funny as "Office of the Keys" - now that's a funny Sacrament.;)

bcdphie 09-13-2006 11:00 AM

My husband and I danced to Beautiful Day by U2. I'm not into that sappy, slow stuff...

xo_kathy 09-13-2006 11:09 AM

We used Sting's "Fields of Gold". Boy does the song seem long when you're out there with everyone staring at you!

valkyrie 09-13-2006 11:27 AM

LOL Ludacris is the only thing about this thread that doesn't make me feel ill.

You can't tell me you wouldn't want to have your first sexual intercourse after your wedding come at the Georgia Dome, on the fifty yard line while the Dirty Birds kick for three. Don't lie to me now.

C'mon dorks, it's your wedding - you only get to do it either once, or 2.5 times, statistically. Rock a little.

Is the ".5 part" the weddings where the bride finds pics of the groom getting a lap dance from the maid of honor at the bachelor party and circulates them at the reception??

Who wouldn't want to rock it in the DJ booth or in the back of the VIP? :p

adpiucf 09-13-2006 01:43 PM

Or the groom can dance on his owe to "99 Problems" LOL

You're better off with Olivia Newton-John's "I Honestly Love You"...

Everytime I hear the crap that is "Endless Love" I get the need to drive a Zamboni (not a ZIPPY one, though).

squirrely girl 09-13-2006 07:01 PM

we used the beatles 'in my life'

f8nacn 09-13-2006 07:26 PM

Considering

"So Sweet" by Kelly Price

My entrance song will either be the following:

This Time It's Love by Tamia
This Moment is Mine by Chante Moore
I'm Gonna Be Ready by Yolanda Adams
Season by Donald Lawrence

JenMarie 09-13-2006 09:29 PM

Considering...
"Stolen Away..." - Dave Matthews Band

Considered...
Tom Petty, but we couldn't find anything we agreed on.

I've always kinda liked Luna by Smashing Pumpkins though.

valkyrie 09-13-2006 09:34 PM

If you want to go for cheese, at least do it right.

Lovin' you is easy cause you're beautiful
Makin' love with you is all i wanna do
Lovin' you is more than just a dream come true
And everything that i do is out of lovin' you
La la la la la la la... do do do do do

No one else can make me feel
The colors that you bring
Stay with me while we grow old

And we will live each day in springtime
Cause lovin' you has made my life so beautiful
And every day my life is filled with lovin' you

Lovin' you i see your soul come shinin' through
And every time that we oooooh
I'm more in love with you
La la la la la la la... do do do do do

Another to consider is "Nothing Even Matters" by Lauren Hill and D'Angelo. Sappy but not too sappy.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 09-15-2006 12:40 PM

I was just at a wedding in Wisconsin where the father-daughter dance was to Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Pride & Joy". It was cute.
