Local mascots?

My chapter has a local mascot (penguin), and I was just wondering if other chapters do as well. Is that a common thing? Thanks ladies!

Drolefille 09-07-2006 05:08 PM

We didn't, but a lot of chapters use the Snake.

I like snakes enough that I wish we had.

BaylorBean 09-07-2006 05:18 PM

We didn't. We did have some family mascots though. I know there was a bear family and a cow family. I tried to get mine going as the penguin family (sadly obssessed with them) but no one but me was for it. :(

Awww

I just got anything purple.. my big sis received a large talking Harmony Bear from me :D

SigmaKappaccino 09-07-2006 08:59 PM

haha.. we had the grey squirrel as our mascot! i think mainly for the reason that squirrels out-number students on my campus 3 to 1! :D

(but i have to admit that i kind of found them cute, and i really liked it.. i used to tell all our new members "welcome to the nut house" :p )

BetteDavisEyes 09-07-2006 11:57 PM

I was a member of the DIVA family & we had one but I can't say what it was b/c it was a *secret* that you learned at the family initiation. ;) LOL!
In all seriousness, it was harmless & really fun at the time.

I have 19 stuffed penguins. Not kidding. I think 15 of them are the same kind of penguin too. Toys R Us makes awesome penguins.
I wish our chapter had a mascot...

I can't even begin to guess at how many I have! My poor husband when we started staying with each other he had to share the bed with my fav stuffed penguin. :)

When I go visit my guy for the weekend, I usually bring along this giant stuffed chocolate lab he bought me (yes I did coerce him into it!). He fell in love with my mini chocolate lab and I have a stuffed tiger I sleep with. I have to have some stuffed animal to hold when I sleep or I can't sleep. Yes I am almost 23 and yes I still do love stuffed animals.
I named my stuffed penguins after world leaders because they were stuffed emperor penguins. Napoleon, Churchill, Kim (Jong Il-wrong I know), Blair, Elizabeth...
I am a five year old in an adult's body. Good thing boyf likes that about me :D

OMG you and I are so a like! Except I am 27 and have a deep attachment to all my stuffed animals. Right now there is no where to put them so they are in a plastic bag. :( My names aren't that creative, they are all just named "Penguin".

There's a reason we're sisters! Funny, I haven't really bonded that much with my chapter sisters, it's the ones I meet over the internet that make me sure I made the right choice.
For the record, I name everything. My car has a name, my computer has a name...I named my boyfriend's boots. Left one is Magnolia, right one is Destroyer.
Oh...I went to the New England Aquarium and they have the most adorable stuffed penguins ever. Next time I go I'll get you one and send it. I got a penguin chick! So cute!

This is eerily creepy b/c I do the same thing. I have a collection of cats that I adore. My husband just thinks I'm a crazy cat lady but I have so many, most are put away in boxes b/c I have no room for them in our house. :(
I have NeeHee (from Hawaii), Nala, Simba, Mufasa (yes I do enjoy the Lion King), Patches, DooDoo, Talita, and Tabitha.

SigKapQueen 09-10-2006 06:09 PM

The chapter in vegas uses the dove and we tried to embrace it as much as possible. all the other chapters love love love their mascot like adpi and the lion and dz and the turtle and alpha gam and the squirrel. so whenever the girls need a pickerupper or an energizer a girl puts her hands on her back like a dove and starts squaking all over the room. great during recruitment right before we open the doors for the pnms to come in. also they even came up with the cute saying of
NO DOVE, NO LOVE;)

SigKapSweetie 09-11-2006 08:33 PM

We use the dove as well. When I was the VPM and trying to put together photos for the video, a few sisters and I decided that we needed a 'sign' like ADPi's four-finger diamond or Tri-Delt's fingers/thumbs triangle, so we told the sisters to start taking pictures with 'hearts and doves' - pointer fingers and thumbs making a heart, with the other fingers fanned out around the heart to make dove wings. I don't know if any other SK chapters do it; our sisters had used the gesture before, but we'd never done it in pictures before that year. Our girls loved it, and every picture taken since then has at least two girls making 'hearts and doves'. Now all the new members think we've been doing it forever. :) It's amazing how quickly history rewrites itself.

Also, some of our families within the house have their own mascots. I'm in the frog family (DEFINITELY the right place for me! ::ribbit:: ), so pretty much every Christmas/birthday/etc., my littles get me frog stuff.

SigKapQueen 09-12-2006 12:19 PM

we do that too:P

we also do the heart and dove but we add the triangle. everything else is the same but we put our middle fingers together to make a triangle.
oh yeah...i forgot to mention that my family chose the monkey as our mascot. we used to have two families into one calling it the ellemouse but now my family is one of the biggest in the chapter!!!

I seriously need pictures of this.. soo thumb and pointers make the heart... middle fingers make the triangle and ring and pinkies make the dove wings?

SigmaKappaccino 09-12-2006 06:03 PM

i agree.. i think i need to see a picture of this!! doesn't it clog up the picture and take away from everyone's faces?!

maybe i'm just the resident cynic

SoCalGirl 09-12-2006 10:22 PM

So this is what I was posting before the boards went down yesterday.

University of New Orleans uses doves ~

As you see in the pics, it doesn't really. I'm glad that we have something! We did once try making sigmas by crossing our middle and ring fingers. But it's hard to do on the fly... so to speak.

We thought about that way too but figured it was a little to gangster! :) Besides, everyone would assume we were just repping the WESTSIDE! :D

Well if you yell Sigmas at the same time, I guess it works. But yeah, didn't work. I'll try to spread the Dove and the hearts though :D

ufdale 09-17-2006 10:11 PM

My chapter at Florida does the heart with dove wings too! I asked someone about it and they said it was our universal handsign, so I thought everyone did it that way?

I'm totally going to spread the word :) I love the heart and dove wings!

Taking the handsign to every chapter.... in central illinois.... so I dunno 3 maybe?

lavendarlace 01-26-2007 02:55 AM

I am totally late for this thread but I just read and to add...

I was in the bumble bee family so I guess that was our family mascot! I have a few stuffed bumblebees and love everything bumblebees=D

Also, I totally love penguins I had no idea it was such a big deal for everyone else too! That is too cool! It's really between my boyfriend and I and lately we have really loved seeing all the penguin movies. My boyfriend bought me a glass penguin and I recently bought him a stuffed one! I named him "Promise" as in I promise to love him forever! We are so lame. =D

cantwait08 04-02-2008 10:30 AM

the mascot for the sig kap chapter on my campus is the butterfly

BetteDavisEyes 04-02-2008 09:06 PM

A butterfly is cute but I wonder how they chose that?

cantwait08 04-03-2008 02:40 PM

i have no idea but i am so glad that its something that can be found anywhere unlike some other mascots

sairston1874 05-04-2008 05:40 PM

The University of Memphis chose the butterfly as our local mascot in 2000. Our advisor told us that the reason they chose it is because they wanted a local mascot and that's what the chapter passed with a 2/3 majority. I have no idea what else was up for a mascot though...

sigmakappagirl 09-03-2008 04:33 PM

I am WAY late to this conversation, but my chapter uses a gator for our mascot. Our advisor that helped start our chapter in 1991 was from Florida and was a huge gators fan, so we have a BUNCH of songs and chants and stuff with the gator in it. And there are stuffed alligators all around our house, and passed during big/lil week and stuff. i love having a fierce animal! haha better then a butterfly in my opinion. haha just kidding! :)

AOII Angel 09-03-2008 09:08 PM

Sorry for interrupting, but the Sigma Kappa Chapter (now closed) at Northeast Louisiana University used ducks as their chapter mascot. We had a dorm split into four wings for the four sororities on campus, and each group decorated their windows. Sigma Kappa had an awesome decoration with Sig Kap and ducks from Suzy's Zoo. I totally ripped them off when I made AOIIs window decorations the next year....of course, the material we used turned out to be flammable. C'est la vie!

BabySnake128 09-18-2008 12:46 AM

We don't have a chapter mascot, but our families have different themes. Mine is the Hooters fam (most of us are top-heavy), and we all got these great tank tops at big/lil reveal with a mock hooters restaurant logo where the owl's ayes are in the double P's of ΣΚ.
Some other house families that come to mind are the BAMF pham, Ohana, and the classy bitches.

We just started a hand gesture too! The pointer and thumb shape a heart (like yours) but instead of a dove's wings, we put the fingers together to form a triangle. I like the dove idea though. We don't do much (chapter wise) with the dove mascot, but my mom bought me the most beautiful dove charm for my initiation that I love!
