Opinions on new facebook feature
Myspace is my new addiction. I haven't been on the facebook in like a month. Yesterday, I decided to log in to see what's up. I noticed there is the new "News Feed".
What's funny was reading the comments on my news feed... "facebook has become big-brother" "I hate that facebook is putting out all of my business for everyone to see" "the facebook has lost it's mind" "man, this thing is creepy now!" I actually like the new feature and will be checking the site more often again. Do you think facebook has gone too far? |
Terrible, I haven't heard on person who actually likes it. We were discussing it at rush practice yesterday, we all think it's just gone way too far. It takes stalking to the next level.
|
I knew that once they added that "put your blog here" feature..it was all downhill from there.
It really looks like Facebook threw up and I don't like it. It's like they're telling us, "Not a stalker? OMG we'll make you one!!!" And I don't know of anyone who likes this new feed feature. |
i generally feel that's its creepy!
|
I hate it. I don't need to know what my friends' friends wrote on their walls.
A side note, we recently found out that our rho chi is not allowed to have the position this semester because the school screwed up and put a picture of her wearing letters in the school calendar. So the girls voted in a new rho chi and she took the sorority out of her profile. However, thanks to the new facebook "features," it still shows on her profile that she left the group, which completely defeats the purpose of being disafilliated. |
I think it's creepy and obnoxious. It just spits a ton of random information at you at once...

Basically there's a new "news feed" that informs you of your friends' activities: Suzy changed her status from In A Relationship to It's Complicated Mike left the Two Tissues and a Spoon are better than my President group Talulah changed her default picture. Heather is on psychotropical vacation (TM Jules). Stuff like that. If you have 239048203482394 friends, your home page is filled with that crap. |
I don't dislike it.
All facebook did was streamline the info that was previously three clicks away. If people are afraid of being stalked, they: 1) Shouldn't be on a social networking site. 2) Shouldn't put private information on a social networking site. If you were going to be stalked, like seriously, criminally stalked, the addition of feeds would be irrelevant. |

If you (don't) like the new feature, then email Facebook:

In one of the many new complaint groups someone said that other people's news feeds show a friend request she rejected! But what bothers me most is that they are sending out a cookie-cutter response to everyone's e-mails, which is the same as ignoring them. It basically says that once we get used to it, we will like it....Right. |
Just a heads up...you can keep your own mini-feeds from displaying on your profile by clicking on the black "x." However, they oftentimes still show up on other people's news pages/home pages, so it doesn't do that much good
|
i got rid of facebook once that started.
|
I'm not on facebook and don't have my on myspace account. What's the difference between the two? They sound more or less similar.
|
My #1 problem with the new facebook feature is that I don't want to see what my friends say on thier friends walls.
My like the pictures, stauts updates, etc though |
I actually like the new features a lot. As someone who didn't friend everyone under the sun I like getting updates on the people I have friended. I don't really get why people are complaining about the stalker aspect -- the information it displays was already available to anyone on your friends list and if someone on you friends list wants to stalk you they can just check your profile all the time. If someone is worried about their privacy they can adjust their profile privacy settings, delete things from their mini-feeds and not friend random people.

I'm of the opinion....Dude, who cares? It's facebook.
If the major topic of my converstation with anyone ever revolved around facebook I would kill myself. |

I really don't like the recent Facebook features. The notes, the status thing, and the news feed are all really stupid.

man. I'm all about the myspace baby.
1- sluttier girls 2- sluttier girls 3- sluttier girls screw facebook |
RE: New Facebook Feature
it's out of control.
seriously. |
I dont like the whole blog and news feed thing at all. However, it's not a big deal when compared to the fact that facebook is selling our information to 3rd parties. That, to me, is going too far.
Anywho, I've moved on from facebook and myspace account is going to be deleted soon (again!). |

I actually like it. Am I alone in this? It's much easier to have all the information at a glance instead of clicking on people's profiles to see what they updated.
|
i just wish they'd move the mini-feeds to a less obtrusive position, like where they moved pictures and groups to, and then put the pics and groups back where they were.
|
Apparently all those petition and anti-feed groups paid off - showing up on my homepage of facebook (and I assume everyone else's) is a letter from the creater of the site. He apologizes for making so many people upset about the News Feed, and clarifies ways to increase your privacy control. I thought it was a well-written memo...and I'm always impressed when a party recognizes and addresses the concerns of the people its affecting. It seems like he's working hard to keep with his vision for facebook and still keep peace with its members.
|
I'm glad they set up some new privacy settings for the mini feed. The only thing I didnt like was people seeing who's walls I had signed.
|
i log in once in a while. but i think its funny when it says "so and so are now friends." it makes it seem like the two got into a fight and now just made up.

Here's an article about the new controls on Facebook:
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...s/4173986.html |
An Open Letter from Mark Zuckerberg:
We really messed this one up. When we launched News Feed and Mini-Feed we were trying to provide you with a stream of information about your social world. Instead, we did a bad job of explaining what the new features were and an even worse job of giving you control of them. I'd like to try to correct those errors now. When I made Facebook two years ago my goal was to help people understand what was going on in their world a little better. I wanted to create an environment where people could share whatever information they wanted, but also have control over whom they shared that information with. I think a lot of the success we've seen is because of these basic principles. We made the site so that all of our members are a part of smaller networks like schools, companies or regions, so you can only see the profiles of people who are in your networks and your friends. We did this to make sure you could share information with the people you care about. This is the same reason we have built extensive privacy settings – to give you even more control over who you share your information with. Somehow we missed this point with News Feed and Mini-Feed and we didn't build in the proper privacy controls right away. This was a big mistake on our part, and I'm sorry for it. But apologizing isn't enough. I wanted to make sure we did something about it, and quickly. So we have been coding nonstop for two days to get you better privacy controls. This new privacy page will allow you to choose which types of stories go into your Mini-Feed and your friends' News Feeds, and it also lists the type of actions Facebook will never let any other person know about. If you have more comments, please send them over. This may sound silly, but I want to thank all of you who have written in and created groups and protested. Even though I wish I hadn't made so many of you angry, I am glad we got to hear you. And I am also glad that News Feed highlighted all these groups so people could find them and share their opinions with each other as well. About a week ago I created a group called Free Flow of Information on the Internet, because that's what I believe in – helping people share information with the people they want to share it with. I'd encourage you to check it out to learn more about what guides those of us who make Facebook. Today (Friday, 9/8) at 4pm edt, I will be in that group with a bunch of people from Facebook, and we would love to discuss all of this with you. It would be great to see you there. Thanks for taking the time to read this, Mark |
