rush outfits

hi everyone!!

i have no clue on what to wear for rush. i have about a month to shop so any advice would be appreciated. thanks a bunch!!

irishpipes 09-02-2006 08:12 AM

Where do you go to school? That will make a huge difference.

texas*princess 09-02-2006 09:12 AM

I'm really hoping some GCers will post links to actual outfits. I love when they do that :)

Also- does your school have a rush info packet? Usually there is something in there - whether it be a few paragraphs or actual pictures of what should be worn to rush.

FSUZeta 09-02-2006 11:15 AM

are you rushing in the fall or in the winter?

your best bet for what your campus deems appropriate would be to ask some girls on campus, or check with the greeklife office. most likely your recruitment counselor will go over appropriate outfits with you, but that might be the day before recruitment begins, when you would not have time to go shopping!!

I know that UK puts out a recruitment guidebook that has examples of what to wear. Your school may have one too! Look on the school web site for Greek Affairs or something similar. Good luck!

SoCalGirl 09-02-2006 02:13 PM

The UK recruitment book is amazing!

One question though, why do so many of the houses at UK look nearly identical???

I guess they were all built around the same time? The houses that look the most similar are the houses found in Sorority Circle, which is no longer Sorority Circle considering a fraternity now lives in the old Sigma Kappa house. :p (SK moved across the circle to the old Alpha Xi Delta house.)

i'm a transfer student at ucsd (university of california-san diego). the weather there is absolutely beautiful, but it can fluctuate since the school is so close to the beach.

i checked out the greeklife website, but it does not advise on what to wear besides the 1st three days are informal and the 4th day (pref) is formal. i understand that each day, my outfits are suppose to be dressier.

i would love if someone can post links to outfits. :D

PenguinTrax 09-02-2006 06:50 PM

There are a few 'what to wear' threads on the forum already. If you do post about specific clothing items, please post links NOT the actual pictures. Carnation and I have a strict policy against bandwidth theft on this forum (and posting pics hosted on other sites constitutes bandwidth theft).

The outfits shown in the UK link would be pretty good for UCSD, except for Bid Day. Jeans, not a white dress, are apropriate. October 6-10 is unpredictable weather everywhere in SD, not just on the coast.

The rooms where the events are held get HOT but outside it could be foggy and cold, so plan accordingly. I've never considered UCSD to be overly superficial. It's more important to be comfortable and confident in yourself that what label your wearing. Trendy clothes are always appreciated though. :)

Open House is the most casual. Jeans are not unusual but I think a cute denim skirt would be a better alternative. Each night gets gradually dressier. For Pref a pretty dress, but nothing extremely formal.

I'll see if I can find links to some outfits. What kind of styles do you normally wear?

soCALgirl, i noticed your location--are you an alumni of the school?
as for my style, i like to keep it simple and comfy. i usually shop at urban outfitters, free people (freepeople.com), nordstrom, anthropologie, etc. you can probably get a sense of what i like from those listings.

for one of the days--may be one or two--i was thinking of wearing black bermudas with a nice blue patterned top + pointed black flats + nice pair of earrings. i think the shoes would place it in day two, but i'm scared to be under-dressed. what do you think?

That would definitely work for either day. :)

I graduated from UCSD a long time ago in 2000. ;)

All this talk about UCSD is making me miss La Jolla!

misstip12 01-05-2008 05:55 PM

hey girls,
i just received a packet of info for rush and it says the dress code for the first two days is casual: jeans, sweater, cute top etc.
but i love dressing up and looking cute, so do you guys think i'm over doing it if i wear a simple knit/cotton/jersey dress and nice heels for the first two days? i don't want to look like i'm trying too hard... =P

If it were me, I'd err on the side of caution and follow their dress code. There will be other opportunities for you to dress up.

The first two days are casual because they want you to be comfortable. My guess is that you'll be doing a lot of walking as you'll be going to the different houses.

Over here we encourage the PNMs to try to stand out in a good way so that they're memorable to girls rushing them. Being the only girl in a dress might make you stand out, but it may come across as trying too hard.

misstip12 01-05-2008 06:48 PM

hmm... what do you guys think about sweater dresses? is that too much?

Didn't you say you go to University of Michigan? I go to UM and formal recruitment was in the fall. One of my sisters is on Panhel Exec and when I saw your post I asked her what recruitment packets were sent out (cuz I'm on the COR committee for our events and we didn't get anything) and she said there weren't any.

Weeeeeird.

But anyway, yes, she did say she goes to the University of Michigan here.

KSUViolet06 01-06-2008 12:47 AM

Yeah U of M formal recruitment concluded on Sept. 30th.

Are you asking about formal recruitment for next year, or are you participating in COB/informal?

misstip12 01-06-2008 11:45 AM

sorry. i should've clarified. i don't go to u of m in ann arbor, which is probably the one you guys are all thinking of. there's another university of michigan in dearborn, and i go to that one, and they have recruitment in the beginning of winter semester.
sooo any thoughts on the sweater dress? =P

nittanyalum 01-06-2008 01:32 PM

I agree with OTW, I'd go with the dress code for at least the first day to check things out. You can go on the "nicer" end of things with your "good" jeans and "cute" sweater or top, but if you walk in in a dress and heels the first day and everyone else in your rush group is in "cute" clothes and the sisters will likely be in letters or something more casual than dressy (I recall the rounds getting dressier as they went along), you will probably stick out like a sore thumb (and probably not in a good way). Plus, I would imagine rushing in MI in January will be COLD and possibly icy and snowy. You would NOT be comfortable walking around a lot and you don't want to be the only one doing a "shoe change" going into a party.

Paging PM_Mama!

AGDZO Susan 01-06-2008 04:51 PM

Are the recruitment events on a day all being held in one building? I believe none of the sororities have chapter houses on this campus. If this is correct, you can get away with wearing cute shoes with your pants and a cute top since you won't be outside walking from place to place.

from what I've gathered from alums of that school on GC, a sweater dress would be WAY too dressy. Just say no. Actually, I didn't think they even made sweater dresses (or that college age girls wore them) anymore.

You can still look cute, but dress in a way that goes along with the dress code and that fits the season.

I don't go to your campus, so I'm not sure what your recruitment is like, but I would say wearing a dress on the first day is too dressy. If you have two or three more rounds of recruitment, it will be hard for you to continue to dress up. For example, at my university, we have four rounds of recruitment. If a PNM wore a dress on the first day, I'm not sure what they would wear the next round.

However, if your campus's recruitment isn't that long, maybe. Look around the campus and ask your recruitment counselor. If they're telling you to wear jeans, I really would shy from a dress. However, they tell us to wear jeans, and people wear jean skirts (longer ones, not mini ones) or dress pants to dress it up a bit.

Hope that helps!

Good luck!
