Knitsnpurls' Recruitment Thread

It seems like summer has flown by! I can't believe recruitment kick off starts tomorrow. Even though we don't start Open House until the 31st, I'm getting nervous already. I have my outfits picked out though, and I'm excited to start :)

The sororities on my campus are: Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Chi Omega, Tri-Delta, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, Tri-Sigma, and Zeta Tau Alpha. I had gotten mixed responses on whether I would need recs or not, but in my attempt to casually ask around and obtain a couple, I was able to get them for 7/9 chapters! While I know this doesn't give me any guarantees, I definitely feel more at ease knowing that I covered all of my bases :) And I'll definitely be sure to get thank you's out to all of the women who took the time out to write one.

While I'm so glad to finally have a reason to wear all of my skirts and dresses, I usually live in jeans, so my code names are all based off of jean brands haha

Sevens
Citizens
Paige
Chip
Pepper
Hudson
Joe's
Diesel
Antik

Everyone on this board has been great in helping me research everything. Here's hoping that things go well!

I also live in jeans, so i'm liking your code names. Of all those on that list, nothing hugs my curves quite like Citizens! :D
Best of luck!!

...Going to Carolina in my mind...

Have a wonderful, fun Recruitment, Knitsnpurls!

BamaDad DZ 08-30-2006 05:11 PM

Good luck to you during recruitment. Try to have fun (my daughter managed despite the heat and heavy schedule). The rewards appear to make it all worth it....watch out for the rain, etc. from "Ernesto" as it makes its way north.

knitsnpurls 08-30-2006 11:37 PM

Apparently mother nature didn't get the memo that rush is a "dry" event, because about an hour before kick off tonight, it starting POURING outside (bad joke, I know :)). It didn't seem to affect the turnout though because it was packed! To accomodate Ernesto, however, rush events have been cancelled for tomorrow, so we'll have to wait another day. Instead of spreading open house over 2 days, we're going to visit all 9 on Friday. It's gonna be such a long day, but it'll be worth it if it's going to be drier (and cooler).

The girls in my group, as well as our recruitment counselors, all seemed really nice. Hopefully, I'll get to know everyone a little bit better as the week goes on. I feel a lot less nervous now; I think I made the right choice in deciding to rush :)

Stef the Pef 08-31-2006 02:44 AM

Good luck with rush and Ernesto! I love the jean code names!

knitsnpurls 09-02-2006 12:16 PM

I know there's no way they could've changed Open House to today because of the football game, but the weather looks gorgeous outside. Yesterday was definitely a day I'll remember though. We all got drizzled on a little bit, and once the sun set, we were all freezing, but overall, I had a great time. After spending almost 6 hrs with my group (and the other groups that travelled with us), I definitely feel like I'll be able to walk away with some new friends even if I don't get a bid :)

I had no idea what to expect in each house, so I was pleasantly surprised at the process. The only thing I didn't like was that the rounds were so short! Some of the houses I felt like I could've stayed and talked with some of the girls all night haha. But I guess that's a good thing. Hopefully they felt the same. But anyway, my thoughts on the houses:

Sevens - It was a great place to start the day. They were so cute and everyone in my group remarked how they reminded us of skittles. This house stayed as one of my favorites all night. I had really easy conversation with the girls I talked to, even if it did feel a bit rushed.

Joe's - This was the only house I knew anything about prior to rush, and I went in really wanting to like it. While the girls were really nice, it felt disorganized. Their song/cheer was longer than the others, so we didn't have much time to talk in this house. I felt really confortable with one of the girls I talked to, but the other was a bit awkward. I'd definitely give them another chance though. It all comes down to who you talk with sometimes.

Chip - I was kind of intimidated at first because a lot of the girls looked like they were "bred" to be in a sorority (not meaning that in a negative way at all), but the girls I talked to were all really nice. I am actually friends with one of the girl's Big, and another girl, we found out we have 3 classes together. I walked away really liking this group too.

Citizens - This house seemed like a lot of fun. Even the house itself looked really bright and cheerful. They had a lot of energy, and were all really adorable. I had good conversation with all of the girls, and one of my really good friends is in this house. I can't get their cheer out of my head haha.

Paige - I was a little disappointed by this house also. I feel bad saying it though because the girls were all really nice. I ended up knowing one of them. But there were a few awkward silences with the girls. I felt like I had to grab at things to talk about, which I didn't at the other houses. I'd give them a second chance though of course.

Pepper - I was a little intimidated at first because of what some of the other girls were saying before we went in. I had really good conversation with all of the girls though. I especially related to one girl and her big. The whole chapter seemed like a really nice group of girls.

Hudson - This group had a rough start with me. Even before their song started, they had a lot of us looking like "". Once I actually got to sit down and talk, I decided I liked the house overall. I really clicked with two of girls. The girls all seemed to have a lot of different interests, which was cool since they'd all bring something new.

Antik - This house was a little too intense for me. Although we had gotten used to all the banging on the windows right before we go into a house, none of us were expecting a group to actually break a window! They had a lot of energy, while I appreciated the fact that they were trying to get us all excited since it was late, I think we were all a little too worn down. The girls were really nice though and apologetic, I'd definitely go back and give the house another chance...hopefully earlier in the day.

Diesel - This group was fun. They still looked excited without being manic. I had really good conversation at this house and actually ended up knowing two or three girls in this house also. I don't know what it was, but I just had an overall good vibe about this house. I'd love to meet more people here. They were a nice way to end the evening.

End the end, we had to rank our Top 7, and then 8 and 9. My top picks had some ties, but end the end, this is how I ranked them:
1. Citizens
1. Sevens
1. Diesel
1. Chip
1. Pepper
1. Hudson
1. Antik
8. Joe's
9. Paige

I'm so nervous about getting my invites tomorrow. I felt like I really clicked with a lot of girls, but my biggest fear is not getting invited back anywhere haha. Hopefully they clicked with me as well. Wow, this post is getting really long! Thanks for reading down this far :)

twinkle555 09-02-2006 12:26 PM

sounds like you had a good first day! good luck tomorrow!

Jimmy Choo 09-02-2006 12:38 PM

I'm glad you had a great time during your first day! Hopefully it will remain dry for the rest of recruitment :) Good luck tommorow!

AChiOhSnap 09-02-2006 03:33 PM

I'm glad you had a good time, good luck!

carolina blue 09-02-2006 05:11 PM

Good luck to you too, hun! I'm glad to see that you're enjoying yourself, and I hope everything works out the way you want it to. BTW, I heard about the window incident, and I was just mortified for those poor girls. I can't imagine being the PNM and seeing it!

KSUViolet06 09-02-2006 08:17 PM

Wow, you seem to like a good majority of the groups! That's a great start.

NutBrnHair 09-02-2006 09:51 PM

So far, so good! Thanks for the updates!

aggieAXO 09-02-2006 09:53 PM

[QUOTE=knitsnpurls]I

Diesel - This group was fun. They still looked excited without being manic.

ASUADPi 09-03-2006 06:12 PM

Good luck with your recruitment. Hope you have a wonderful time!

NutBrnHair 09-03-2006 06:42 PM

Did you pick up your invites today?? :)

knitsnpurls 09-03-2006 06:45 PM

I just got back from Round 1. Today was definitely a lot different from Friday (aside from the weather). I was asked back to 4 houses today. I was a little bit disappointed to see that some of the ones I felt I really clicked with had cut me, but my Rho Chis told me that I did very well for a junior. Some of the freshmen and sophomores only had 3 invites, so I'm not going to mope about it, especially since I was open to all of my choices.

Hudson - On Friday, I felt like I had clicked with this house, so I was a little disappointed that I didn't have solid conversations with any of the girls I talked with today. I feel like it could've been ME who was off though, since it was the first house after receiving our invites. Their skit was cute.

Diesel - I could definitely see myself as a sister here! I really, really liked the house last time and ranked it highly, but they totally sold me today. I had great conversation again, and a couple of the girls from Friday remembered me and came over to say hi. Their skit was adorable and used two of my favorite current songs. I also love the way they send us off. I go "awww" every time lol

Joe's - I like the girls at this house, and I had a lot in common with the girls I talked to today. For some reason though, I just don't feel like I'm connecting. I could see myself being friends with a lot of these girls, but I can't see myself fitting into their sisterhood...if that makes sense. I liked them much better today than yesterday though. I loved their setup...it was a lot different from the other houses I visited.

Paige - I was genuinely surprised that I was asked back to this house since I didn't feel like I connected at all last time, but they really impressed today. I clicked with the girls I talked to and they had a really good skit. They used one of the same songs as "Diesel" and totally rocked it. I had written this house off yesterday, but they're on my radar now.

In the end, I ranked them as follows:
Diesel
Joe's
Paige
Hudson

Since we can go back to 5 houses tomorrow, they're all obviously in my top group. I'm just SO nervous now since I have fewer houses to invite me back. Hopefully, I'll keep the ones I've got :)

texas*princess 09-03-2006 06:56 PM

sounds like you're haviing a great time!! good luck :)

alum 09-03-2006 06:59 PM

Funny how the next parties can reveal the positive sides of houses who may have not been able to put their best foot forward....Good for you for going back to all.

I love your choice of aliases even I know absolutely nothing about names of jeans (my kid is a chino/skirt wearing prep)!

adpiucf 09-03-2006 07:03 PM

Don't be too worried about one off-conversation--- or off-day. Recruitment is a tiring process for both PNMs and the chapters... and chapters are full of members from all walks of life and diverse interests. You won't LOVE every single member of your sorority if you pledge, nor will they all want to be your instant BFF. If your vibe from the entire week is favorable to one chapter, that's a good indication you will click with them as a whole. If you keep meeting ladies you don't vibe with, then it is probably a sign that you don't.... if it's 1/2 and 1/2, you're probably fine-- again, remember that some sororities have huge memberships and you'll find a niche within any one if you try.

Good luck and continue to keep an upbeat attitude and an open mind.

Jimmy Choo 09-03-2006 09:27 PM

It sounds like you are having a great time!! Good luck with the rest of recruitment!! :)

knitsnpurls 09-05-2006 12:19 AM

It was nearly impossible to stay dry today! Apparently there was an SUV that was driving around campus water ballooning girls and rho chis outside of parties  During the last two rounds, the sky opened up and girls were running around using whatever they could to stay dry. I had 2 other girls huddled under my umbrella and a car drove through a puddle and splashed us all! Hopefully the houses had a little sympathy for all of us rushees that got caught out in the rain.

I only lost one of my 4 houses from yesterday, so I was able to visit 3 out of 5 today for Philanthropy & House Tours.

Hudson - This house has been very up & down with me. The first day I liked them, yesterday I was disappointed, and today it went well. While I feel like I could find a niche for myself within this chapter, they haven't completely sold me. The girls all seem really nice though, and they had so much food!

Joe's - The girls at this house made me really feel wanted. I was able to talk to some of the girls I met earlier in the week, and they all expressed that they were really happy to see me back and even brought up things they remembered me saying. I could definitely see myself being friends with a lot of these girls. They're really down to earth and their house was cute.

Diesel - As I said yesterday, this chapter just feels like home. The girls were also very down to earth here and so far I've just felt really at ease with all of the girls I've met. This chapter, as a whole, seems the most like me. Their house also looks really bright. I wasn't afraid I was going to break something lol. I feel like girls remember me from this house too. This is the only house I'd be absolutely crushed to be cut from.

So far this was my favorite round. Not only did you get to talk to the girls, but you can also tell a little bit about what the girls are like outside of recruitment by seeing their rooms. Plus it's longer. You can actually do more than make small talk.

End the end, I ranked them:
Diesel
Joe's
Hudson

I'm going to be SO nervous waiting for Wednesday to roll around. Wish me luck!

ASUADPi 09-05-2006 12:28 AM

I don't know how you do it, waiting until Wednesday. :) Sometimes I think I'm the world most impatient person (even though I know I'm totally not. LOL).

Sounds like you are having a good time! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

NutBrnHair 09-05-2006 12:40 AM

We have to wait until Wednesday?! Darn, okay...I guess I can do it! We all wish you the best!

Jimmy Choo 09-05-2006 11:26 AM

kathykd2005 09-05-2006 05:33 PM

Can't wait to hear the rest of your story! :)

Denise_DPhiE 09-05-2006 05:58 PM

WEDNESDAY??!?!!? Oh, ok, that is tomorrow but we are on pins and needles!!! Glad you have so many choices - this is a great thread for all upper classmen PNMs to read!

Keeping fingers crossed for you.

Denise

Ocalagirl 09-05-2006 06:06 PM

I know I'm all excited to read the rest of it and see how your recruitment goes!

WhiteDaisy128 09-06-2006 05:18 PM

I might see you tonight. In 20 minutes I'm off to Chapel Hill to assist as you make your final list!! :-) I'll be in the Carolina Inn with brown hair, black slacks, a white shirt (with little ruffles on the collar and sleeves), and pearls. I know the chance of seeing you is like nothing, but just in case! :D
