nolegirl88's FSU recruitment thread!
Well, I was debating on whether or not I was going to start a rush thread, but I decided I will!! I've gotten addicted to reading all the others, so I figured you all could use another thread to help your addictions as well ;). Recruitment orientation is sunday and everything starts monday! Yikes! I'm really nervous, but I feel pretty comfortable. I have everything I'm going to wear all planned out, some interesting information to say about myself, and practiced :D SMILING:D and introducing myself (I am sometimes a bit quiet in new situations). I have recs to around half the sororities, but am not a legacy..I'm not too worried though. Does anyone know how important recs are for FSU? I was thinking they mattered quite a bit, but on the other hand, it's surely not auburn or uga. Anyways, I looked up the weather in Tallahassee (http://www.weather.com/outlook/homea...Link_schoolday) and it doesn't look that great..but not horrible either. Gotta go find my umbrella! I've checked and rechecked my facebook and myspace, so everything is good on there! I don't think there's really anything left for me to do for rush until it starts except to wait..which is going to seem like so long! Even though it's just 3 days. :) I'm definitely excited!
Yeah, another story to follow!!! (i have got to stop sneaking onto GC while i am at work, i am so addicted!) Good luck to you! Cant wait to read your story!
Recs are somewhat important but not crucial. First cuts are almost always GPA related, then recs later in the week. I wouldn't bring up recs to anyone - if they want you bad enough, they'll get a rec for you.
Weather here is very hot and very humid. I would get a small umbrella to carry with your for the late afternoon parties. There are tents set up outside each house for shade/waiting, but there is a lot of walking between houses and the umbrella is good not only for rain, but to keep yourself from getting sunburned. Drink plenty of water and make sure your shoes are comfy and don't rub blisters if your feet are damp. Enjoy Recruitment - it's a lot of fun and you'll meet a lot of great people. |
Nolegirl88, check your pm's.
Yeah, I love recruitment stories!!! Good luck!!!!
thanks! I've been SO BUSY moving in yesterday and today, I am TIRED! We have recruitment orientation tonight, and everything starts tomorrow! We drove around and looked at all the sorority houses..and WOW they are all beautiful! Weather IS really hot here, but so far it hasn't rained (knock on wood) so I'm hoping it stays this way during the week. But one can only hope :)
1339 girls registered for recruitment...wow!!
have fun!!!

Have a great day! |
Wow! The first day was SO much fun! It was really hot though..but my rho gam made us all cute fans! So that was nice. :) We went to 8 houses today, and we see 7 tomorrow. I'm really getting along with the girls in my rho gam group, they're all nice and it's comforting to know they're all nervous as me! Because there are just so many really beautiful girls here. OK so on to the houses..
I decided to name the houses after countries: (no particular order) Spain England Ireland Amsterdam Italy Greece France Germany Switzerland Wales Scotland USA Canada Austrailia Mexico Round 1 Day 1: Spain--the first house I visited today was actually one I was really interested in before recruitment started. I was kind of nervous, but the girls I talked to were very friendly and nice and I enjoyed this house. Not as much as I expected I would, but I'd definitely love to go back. Amsterdam--I wasn't expecting to like this house, they didn't seem like the kind of girls I hang out with. But once I started talking to them, I really enjoyed this house! I had some good conversations, but the second girl I spoke to seemed disinterested. I'd definitely love to go back to this house to learn more! Greece--I was sort of interested in this house before recruitment began, but that really changed after talking to the girls. I felt so at home here, and I had AMAZING conversations with all the girls I spoke to! We sort of went off tangent with a couple things, but I felt very comfortable and at ease with these girls. They were very nice and very down to earth. I'd say they're my favorite of the day. Wales--This house seemed ok. The girls were nice, but none of the conversations really went anywhere, and they seemed kind of forced. I don't think I'd fit in here, but I wouldn't mind going back to learn more. Ireland--I only spoke to one girl during this round, which I thought was odd. The conversation was ok, but it seemed a bit forced. The girl I spoke to was nice though! Most of the girls in my group loved this house, but I didn't really feel a connection. I wouldn't mind going back to learn more though. Italy--I REALLY enjoyed this house! The girls I spoke to were really nice and we had a lot in common to talk about. They were all down to earth and seemed very close, which I really liked. I was expecting this house to be my favorite before recruitment started, but I'd say it's a close second to Greece so far. Mexico--I didn't know too much about this house before recruitment. The girls I spoke to were very sweet, but I just didn't get the right vibe from them. I'd love to go back and learn more, though, and speak to more girls. France--I didn't know much about this house either, but I ended up really liking this house!! All the girls I spoke to were very friendly and nice, and when I talked to them, it felt like I was already their friend just having a normal conversation. I could definitely see myself as a sister here, I want to meet more people to get a better feel for the house though. I really hope to be invited back to them and learn more. Overall, the first day was fun!! I didn't hear much, if any, "tent talk", and everyone was very open minded about all the houses which was really good. I'm glad I don't have to hear rumors and lies like that, because even if I know they aren't true, it still sort of sticks in the back of your head and leaves you wondering. It was VERY HOT today and those coffee filters definitely came in handy! All that ice water was very refreshing! I'm not as nervous anymore as I was, now that I've gotten used to it and know what to do and stuff. I can just relax and be myself a little easier. I'm excited for tomorrow! Wish me luck :) |
I just got back from Australia, so I'm gonna have to root for them!
Good luck! |
Have fun this week! :)
Can you tell those of us who are too "lazy" ;) to look it up what sororities are at FSU? Thanks!! And good luck!
The daughter of one of our alum chapter members here is an active in the Gamma Phi Beta chapter at FSU - she has been looking forward to rush! :D |

here's hoping that day 2 /round 1 goes as well as day 1.
I loved Madrid and paris when I was there a few springs ago, so Spain and France are my picks...good luck!
PHEW! Day 2/round 1 is finally over!! These have been the lonngesttt (and hottest!) days, but I really enjoyed going to all the houses. I went to 7 today..
USA -- I REALLY loved this house!! I had great conversations with all the girls I spoke to, and the girls seemed really nice and down to earth and had a good sense of humor. I'd love to be invited back here, I felt really at ease and comfortable. Germany--I got a weird vibe from the girls in this group..I can't really put my finger on it, but they were nice. Switzerland--the girls here were nice and I had some good conversations, but I'd like to go back again to get a better feel for the group and speak to more girls. Scotland--the girls in this house were very nice and normal and down to earth. I was very comfortable talking to all of them, and I'd love to be invited back. I'm just not sure I'd fit in with them though. England--I'm not too sure I liked this house, though the girls I spoke to were nice and friendly. Most of the girls in my group loved this house, but I'm pretty neutral. Canada--the first girl I spoke to in this house was very nice and I had a great conversation with her. I got a strange vibe from this house, but I do want to go back and learn more and meet more girls. Austrailia--I was expecting to like this house, but it turns out I didnt really like this house at all. I was trying my hardest to have a good conversation, but each of the girls I spoke to seemed distracted and disinterested. I don't feel as if they enjoyed talking to me, and as if they would rather be doing something else. It was the last party of the day, so that might have been why, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. So today we had to rank our bottom 3 in order from most favorite to least. And then have our top 12 in any random order. I listed: (in order for you to see) 1. Greece 2. Italy 3. Spain 4. USA 5. France 6. Amsterdam 7. Scotland 8. Switzerland 9. Canada 10. England 11. Ireland 12. Austrailia and my bottom three: 1. Mexico 2. Wales 3. Germany I find out tomorrow morning my next round of parties! |
Sounds like you had an overall good experience. Good-luck tomorrow!
Good Luck! Go Italy, great wine, great clothes, great food - what more does any girl need?????:)
I hope everything goes well for you!
My daughter's perceptions changed daily with many of the sororities. I will be curious to see tomorrow's reviews. Good luck, enjoy, try to keep cool.....
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck this week!!! Remember to keep an open mind (are you tired of hearing that yet?) but seriously as you already said some houses will surprise you, and if you're torn about choices you can't go wrong it just means that you're one of the lucky ones who has 2 great fits!!!!
no 3:00 am phone call last night--which means I'm not cut from the first round! yay! Not like I was expecting to..but it makes me happy because it means i'm wanted by at least one group! ;) (staying on the positive side) haha. I find out my schedule when I meet with my rho gam group this afternoon. I hope I'm invited back to at least 9ish (out of a possible 12)..I have a top 5 right now, where i'd be happy in ANY of them, and the next 5 i'm feeling pretty neutral about. the last two i didn't really click with in the first round, but i'm giving them a second chance. I'm hoping for slight cuts, to help me make up my mind for tomorrow when I have to list my bottom 5 (i think it is). i'm excited for today!
thanks to everyone for your encouragement! It's very appreciated :) |
Can't wait to hear your report tonight. Good luck and keep smiling, I like your upbeat attitude!
No 3 AM phone calls ANYTIME! Your recruitment counselor has to sleep sometime, girl! ;)
Wellll, I just got back from my first house. I have two breaks between that one and my next one. I only got invited back to 5..which I'm actually surprised about. A few of the houses I was cut from I had great recs to..I'm guessing it was a GPA thing. I'm really saddened though, because I was cut from 3 of my top 5. But there's my two top favs still up there!! :) So I'm really hoping for them.
I was invited back to: Greece Spain Mexico England Germany so I have my top 2 favorites, two of my bottom three, and one in the middle. I visit 3 today, two tomorrow.. it's already rained outside!! When the first house ended, it was POURING outside. I don't understand why we aren't allowed to carry umbrellas. I visit one of my top 2 today and the other tomorrow..so I'm excited! I know a lot of this is just a numbers game, so I'm not too sad. I am going to re-fix my hair and makeup and go back out there for my last two houses today! I'm REALLLY trying to keep an open mind! |
Good luck and do indeed keep an open mind. "weird vibes" and the like can be the result of inexperienced rushers or even just one person out of a group.
/actually banned the term "vibes" from the sorority side of recruitment. Vibes are not useful adjectives! |
Congrats on your five invites and your great attitude. Remember to give all of the chapters a fair shake this week! I know it sounds crazy, but because there are so many women in each chapter, any reasonable person can find her niche within any one of the FSU sororities. You're not joining a sorority to have 100 new best friends-- it is a sense of sisterhood and belonging. Know that the chapters who invite you back each day have seen something very special in you. Look closely to see what is special about each one of them!
Each day you will meet new ladies, so you never know when a chapter is going to completely wow you! Sometimes you will meet a sister who is just not a good rusher, someone who is tired, or someone who you really just don't click with. Don't focus on this one impression. Your impression of each house should be a sum of experiences: talking to various members, knowing something about their activities and programs and your overall feel of the place. Block out the tent talk. No one cares which sorority 13 other girls thought had the best skit. Continue to keep an open mind this week. It is amazing how many times someone prefs a chapter that was originally dead last on her list coming into this process, and it becomes number one in her heart! |

That doesn't make any sense! Umbrellas are encouraged at UK! |
Also at UGA.
Congrats on getting invited back to your top two - that's great! Good luck, can't wait to hear what happens next...
It poured today in Gainesville, luckily we had a day off from recruitment. Hope the skies cleared up in Tally for you!
I'm loving your attitude! And sending positive thoughts your way...
thanks guys for your nice words!!
well, the houses I visited today were: Mexico-- The girls were all sweet, but for some reason I didn't feel comfortable there. I think because we had one sister for two PNMs, I felt kind of awkward--the other girl I was with was very outgoing, and I tend to be a bit more on the quieter side. I could see these girls as being my friends, but I don't think that today went very well at this house. England--I was VERY surprised to be invited back to this house. These girls are all nice and I had a good conversation with the girls I spoke to, but they aren't the type of people I can really see myself with. While it'd be an honor to be a part of this sorority, realistically, I cannot see myself fitting in here. I'm just happy that they felt they wanted to get to know me better! Greece--WOW. They were my favorite house during the first round of recruitment, and it seems theyre my favorite this round too. I LOVED this house!! The girl I spoke to was sooo nice and we had an excellent conversation! I enjoyed touring the house and learning about their philanthropy, it was very touching. I really really really hope to be invited back for skit day! Other than the one rain shower, the weather today wasn't too bad. It started cooling down as it got later in the day. I was kind of sad when I learned that many of the girls in my group got invited back to around 9 or 10 houses this round, but I know that some of the houses I wasn't invited back to I wouldn't have fit in anyways, so it's easier to cut me now than to lead me on into liking their group even more later. One group, Italy, I really loved. I knew I could see myself in their sorority, I even had a great rec for them, I clicked really well with the girls I spoke to, I'm very upset that I wasn't invited back to them. I heard they were big on grades and GPA, and since mine didn't quite measure up (not to say it was a bad gpa!), I think that's why I might have been cut from them. It (my gpa) just wasn't competitive enough. But if I end up at Greece or Spain, I'm going to be happy and I won't look back. I'm just praying everything goes well, and if I was meant to be in a certain sorority, it will happen. And of course, I'll keep you guys updated! :) |
You keep on giving us the updates and we will keep you boosted with support and good advice from GC'ers who have been there and done that.
Hang in there, NoleGirl!
As everyone says, it only takes one. My daughter is going through the same thing right now at Texas A&M. Stay positive -- You're doing great! Love your idea of naming GLOs for countries! Classic!
