Miss Teen USA 2006
Let's discuss the pagent.
When the contestants introduced themselves, they were wearing a short white jacket or vest, a bra top and short shorts. Before the intro, they were wearing a bra top and a skirt. I'm sorry, but that's trashy. And some of the contestants are 15 years old. I bet that there are some parents that are cringing. Since they were in the desert, why can't they wear khaki shorts and a tank top or capri pants or something like that. I shudder to think about the evening gowns later on tonight. Don't give me that "sex sells" crap. I know that sex sells, but teens as young as that should not be wearing those things. If I were a parent, and if my teen daughter wore something like that, I would be horrified. |

Wouldn't most of those young women be in high school?
Would it be embarassing for a "Miss Teen" to be a college woman? Would you want one of your sisters to be Miss Teen something? Honest question. |
Wouldn't most of those young women be in high school?
-Yes. Would it be embarassing for a "Miss Teen" to be a college woman? -It depends. Some enter college at 17 years old. Would you want one of your sisters to be Miss Teen something? -No comment, because I'm not in a sorority. Anyway, thank God that some of the dresses are not trashy. I liked Miss Georgia's, Miss Virginia's and Miss Maryland's dresses. I didn't like the frills on the dresses. |
yeah, it's really inappropriate to me.
miss virginia had a split in her dress past her thigh. all i know is, we weren't allowed to wear stuff like to our prom and we were 17-19 years old. i'm grown and i wouldn't walk out like that. |
It was a Donald Trump pagent. Doesn't that tell us something? And yes, I thought that outfit was trashy. I think the winner was beautiful, but that dress?!
|
I agree with the slits. I love the color of Miss Virginia's dress, but not the slit.
The winner was Miss Montana, BTW. |
One of my chapter sisters was a former Miss Teen USA when she was in high school. She had her own column in Teen and everything. She also graduated with a double major and honors in three years, got her Master's in Outdoor Rec from a school in Australia and now leads Outward Bound groups among other things. She is probably one of the coolest people I know.

I loved Miss Virginia and Miss Kansas. I could be wrong, but I don't think this is a "scholarship" pageant like the Miss America ones. I think the emphasis is more on fashion and modeling. I'm not saying I would want my daughter to wear some of the outfits, but if they're strutting around in a bikini, what's the difference?

Sometimes, people who share their rush stories, don't get invited to join a sorority in the end. But they stick around her because they like the converation in the Chit Chat forums. And that's okay too! |

Your sister won the title while in high school -- which I assume the vast majority are. Is that an incorrect assumption? I would just think that a college woman would find being a "teen" anything would be less than desirable, even understanding that most beginning college students are still in their teens. Is that a misreading on my part? |

Honestly, I would hope that a college woman would focus more on the person and less on the title. |
Miss Virginia looked fantastic.

My curiousity stems from friends of ours who have two daughters -- the older was Miss Teen Colorado when she was in High School. Her younger sister was Miss Colorado when she was in college. I simply don't believe that the first would have competed in a Teen pageant when she was in college. Obviously, the second didn't. Knowing my two girls, I suspect that they and their friends would have teased any college aged woman fairly unmercifully if they joined the "Miss Teen" whatever pageant. Kids can be fairly cruel. Thats why I asked the question, and labeled it as my being "curious." Nothing more, nothing less. |
I am so smart...S-M-R-T.
No one started a thread for this year's pageant (which aired last Friday).
Did anyone watch Miss Teen South Carolina's interview? |

That's special. REALLY special. |

Sad to say was posted all over YouTube within minutes of it airing. |
What was amazing to me was that Miss Teen South Carolina finished ahead of someone else! Wasn't she like third runner up ahead of Miss Teen West Virginia?
|
I was almost as disturbed by her hands on her hips as I was by her answer.
|
Quote:
Because her answer was pretty bad - I mean, I know "hands on hips" is bad, but . . . kids need maps to learn? South Africa? I guess that's "white shoes after Labor Day" bad? Jesus. |
Quote:
I thought NJ deserved to win, but Colorado was good too. |
Quote:
Oh. My. Gosh. Yep... the U.S. Americans (as opposed to other "Americans"?) don't have maps.. and The Iraqs and South Africa need to help with education? Huh? Poor girl. |
I'm more embarrased by the cokehead treasurer (an elected official) than the bumbling beauty queen. But at least she's not from Charleston or Greenville (she's acutally from Lexington). You can tell she was strugging with than answer. :(
|
I'll be honest, I felt sorry for her. There she stood, a finalist in a national pageant, and she absolutely choked when it counted the most. You just know that she'll kick herself for years!
That said, prior to the competition, I was all excited to see that the Miss Teen South Carolina was an Alpha Delta Pi at Clemson - but she was last year's contestant (*whew*). Her photo is in the ADPi Forum. |
No one can be that choked up to give the kind of answer that she did. All she was asked was how come a 1/5th of Americans cannot locate US on a map. So what did S. Africa, Iraq and Asia have to do with that answer?

I just saw her on the morning news, and she knew the minute it came out of her mouth that it wasn't making sense. I still think she was just SO nervous, her mind went blank and she knew she had to say something. If you think about it honestly, I would think that each of us choked on something when we were her age. My own personal reason (since nobody asked!) is that we need to bring back Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego!! |
Quote:
Actually, that reminds me that on Telemundo this weekend, I saw "¿Dónde está Carmen Sandiego?". |

OMG, it was absolutely horrible to watch her response...But, to be fair, that was really a bad/unusual question.
I think most of the contestants would have had a hard time pulling something out of their asses to answer that. |
I did see one benefit of her mocking up the answer: At least she won't be under Donald for a year. ;)
|
U.S. Americans is correct though, I have heard that before (like on one of those mcglauglin type shows) as opposed to Caribean types who refer to themselves as Americans as do many South Americans. So yes there are other Americas and therefore other Americans. As I started watching I thought, "wow, she might be smart too" but then she talked more and nope.

She Attempts to Redeem Herself!
From iwon.com: Pageant Contestant Re-Answers Question
Aug 28, 11:24 AM (ET) "COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - This time, the question was a little easier for Miss Teen South Carolina. After being stumped by a Miss Teen USA pageant question on live television Friday night, Lauren Caitlin Upton's confused, mangled response has been drawing a lot of attention. The 18-year-old got a chance to redeem herself Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show when she was again asked why one-fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a map. "I would love to re-answer that question," Upton said. "Well personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map. I don't know anyone else who doesn't. And if the statistics are correct, I believe there should be more emphasis on geography." That was much better than her previous response, which included "U.S. Americans" and mentions of South Africa and "the Iraq." A YouTube video of Upton has drawn a couple million hits and thousands of comments, many of them with harsh remarks for the Lexington High School graduate who plans to attend Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. Upton was taking her flubbed answer - and the attention - in stride. "Everything did come at me at once. I was overwhelmed and I made a mistake. Everybody makes a mistake. I'm human," she said Tuesday. "I seriously think I only heard about one or two words of the actual question." Upton's former principal Creig Tyler remembered her as a well-rounded student. "She took college-prep and honors courses and performed well," Tyler told The (Columbia) State newspaper. Miss Teen Colorado Hilary Carol Cruz won the crown. Upton was third runner-up." |

This came up in the ADPi forum, and in a second she could have thrown out the whole 'state-administered exam focus' out as a reason that other subjects (science, geography, history, etc) are not focused on. But oh well... c'est la vie. |

i mean, at least you had a shot of finding Waldo. but geez. the answer may be right in front of us all these years. How do weknow the lyric isnt, "Where in the world is Carm? In Sandiego!" people flub songlyrics allthe time, thats all i'm saying. okandimdonekthxbye. |
Jimmy Kimmel Live gave the best interpretation of this little girl's answer. He broke it down on the chalkboard. Like such as and U.S. Americans and the Iraq...
|
I don't know how she knows she's attending ASU because they just started taking applications for next fall's freshman class a couple of days ago.
