Honorary Members

I'm not a Kappa, yet, but I plan to pledge this upcoming Academic Year. I was wondering why Kappa Alpha Psi don't appoint honorary members like other BGLOs. For instance, a couple of years ago Alicia Keyes became an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I think Kappa should make Will Smith and/or Nelly honorary members of their great organizations.

What do you all think?

Senusret I 08-13-2006 08:17 PM

I am not a Kappa, but I can probably provide some helpful advice.

1) Nothing is guaranteed. Therefore, having a screen name such as yours and using language such as "Not a Kappa, yet" are presumptuous at best and not respectful at worst.

2) Discretion is key. Your interest in any Greek lettered organization should be something you share only with the people who matter -- usually the members of the chapter you'd like to be a member of and members of the organization who are in your family.

3) Both Kappa and Alpha discontinued honorary memberships decades and decades ago. While I wasn't there when the decisions were made, I believe that great men are attracted to both organizations. If a man has Kappa or Alpha in his heart, then he will express his interest to the right people.

And as great as Will Smith or Nelly might be, in your opinion, neither of them have college degrees and aren't eligible for membership in a fraternity.

However, in your quest, perhaps you could focus on the prominent members of the org you're pursuing who might not have international fame -- the Kappa down the street who volunteers at the soup kitchen every week.... the Kappa who runs the after school program....the deacons of your church... etc....

Black fraternities do great things every day, with or without honorary members.

Japan357 08-13-2006 11:33 PM

LOL! Nelly and Will Smith for Kappa in '06? ROFL! Why don't we have honoraries? Maybe its because we believe every member of our organization should earn their wages...we don't just give this sh!t away for free for the simple desire to accumulate numbers or have another "famous frat brother." Its about quality with us...speaking of which you definitely need to change your screenname, I can understand the strong desire but thats just foolish. You are on a large website and you have no idea who's watching, you will mess around and get blackballed. Be descreet and be humble!

marquise1911 08-14-2006 10:02 AM

I honestly think this is some @$$hole with a lot of time on their hands. I won't even give you the benefit of a response to that question. But I will kindly tell you to disappear or change ur screen name to Kappa2Bstomped

KAPPAtivating 08-16-2006 01:57 AM

Okay, I have been absent for a while and have to come back to my block with some isht like this...GET A LIFE dude. While your intent is understandable, your route to get there is going to get you to a dead end. You will end up always being a spectator. I fully understand and appreciate your desire to be accepted into this Noble Klan of Achieving Gentlemen, but everybody who knocks at your door, doesn't deserve to come in your house. Just a word to the wise (assuming you are just that--wise), change the screen name, and wait patiently. If it is to be it will come. You can never rush a piece of coal into a diamond--that's what makes them valuable!;)

Nice response Kappativating

I agree with Senurset I that discretion is key because (please highlight) you may never know who on this board is also from SC, knows a lot of Kappas (even possibly on the regional level and still tight with several of the chapters) and has a father, uncles and a best friend who are Kappas. Get my drift? ;)

True, but they should even tell their kids better. It's great to have an interest, but they might want to keep their intentions to themselves.

jojapeach 08-16-2006 07:43 PM

You would think that after all of these years of GC being up that folks would know some of the rules of being a discreet interest. But that would require research. :o

True! But I was trying to tell him that I know a lot of people and he's from SC too (and it is a small state), he may need to keep his mouth closed. ;)

Sista' Greek,

You were right. Sometimes it's best to say nothing at all.

marquise1911 08-18-2006 11:20 AM

These kids make me wanna scream some times.

Natty Nupe 08-24-2006 03:15 PM

oh, he's from sc!!. pray dont let this knucklehead try and go over at Big AL.

on another note, thats the world we inhabit now, ppl just think that we MUST accept them b/c they have so and so GPA, so many hours blah blah, then when they get blanked they want to carry their grievances outside the chapter. can't stand it.

LOL. I'm an old skool Nupe. (Spr 91) and One must feel the thorns of pledging before One can smell the roses of Kappa. Ain't no walkin' into Kappa baby boy.

Furious Styles 09-24-2006 10:46 PM

Kappa Alpha Psi has only had two honorary members in the entire history of the fraternity. Most bruhs don't know it but it is true. I believe the only reasons why is because we tried it and it doesn't serve the purpose of being a good brother or being commited to the lofty purposes of Kappa Alpha Psi.

I agree with you Nupe, but there's nothing we can do about it in front of a computer. Something I've noticed since I've been a member on GC is I see a lot of jokers on here who are not members of our fraternity using Kappa, or Nupe, or KAY as their screen names. I see it more than I see it with other glos on here. In fact I've only seen it done with Kappa Alpha Psi. I'm sure other glos have had this same cyber problem, but I've been posting on GC for over a year and I've only seen the disrespect towards Kappa. I've even seen one joker who was not a member use KAY in his siggy. I used to get upset about it, but I've learned to ignore these posters now.

Good Brothers, from now on let's not respond to these threads or posts. Replying to these threads also opens it up for other GC members outside of Kappa Alpha Psi to post their opinions about a glo they're not apart of, and all that does is cause debate over nothing.

Yours in bond.

PB

Yo Phi,

Well said. By the way "KAPPA2BE" its not advisable to think that you are just going to be in our Most NOBLE KLAN or even make suggestions as to what we should do. I would only advise you to listen to the aforementioned advice and wait for your time to kome and then maybe your opinions will kount. Good Luck with your quest.

Son, you really have ne idea what it means to be a member of our most Noble Kappa Klan. A membership into our brotherhood means that a man, having met the requirements set forth by our statues, has also proven his loyalty to the principles upon which we stand/have stood upon for the past 97 years. That is why Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has never bestowed upon any man an honorary membership. We kan not just go around handing out memberships all willy-nilly. Son, research is key.

DSTCHAOS 05-14-2008 05:27 PM

Yeah even I know that KAPsi has an honorary member and can tell you where to find the reference in your official (not unofficial) documents.

PrettyOnMyRight 05-14-2008 05:28 PM

Number 8...Nupes Don't Skate. There are, however, certain things that the organization does not wish to be publicized. Since the organization does make the claim to be 100% free of honorary members, I feel I must sustantiate the claim in all that I do. Thanks for your concern, though.

Initiating honorary members is NOT handing out memberships all willy-nilly. And unless you know the process through which it is done then you needn't denigrate it.

Oh and in your MIP how can someone prove their loyalty to the principles before becoming a Kappa--legally that is. Honorary members have done just that by their words and deeds over many years.

Shall we introduce you to...nevermind.....

You all wish not to have it publicized but somehow I know that you all have an honorary member and remember reading the exact page reference in your official documentation on it.

Anywho, next time take your chastising to the PM so that your public untruths will remain unpublicized. ;)
