UGA Recruitment - A friend's story

Hi ladies! Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer, and getting excited for rush season. Since I went through recruitment last year (at another school), I have decided to post one of my good friend's recruitment experience at UGA. Unlike myself, she has not been waiting for the day she receives a bid since she was 15, but she's going through rush to see if sorority life is for her. For those of you who don't know much about UGA, round one (open house) starts tomorrow. The girls go to all the houses to learn about each one.

I have decided to name her houses after classic leading ladies. They are listed in random order:

Marilyn Monroe
Audrey Hepburn
Lauren Bacall
Barbara Streisand
Katherine Hepburn
Elizabeth Taylor
Julie Andrews
Judy Garland
Bette Davis
Doris Day
Jane Fonda
Lucille Ball
Ava Gardner
Mary Tyler Moore
Dorothy Dandridge
Donna Reed
Grace Kelly
Shelley Winters

It's a lot of sororities but I will keep you updated about her perceptions of each one. She is a smart, fun, beautiful girl and I know she will do well.

For those of you wondering which sororities are participating in Panhellenic recruitment, here is a link to their site.

http://www.uga.edu/panhellenic/

I'll update tomorrow on which houses she visted and how it went. Wish her luck!

Favorites

I forgot to mention, due to some upperclassmen friends and gossip (which doesn't mean much), her three current interests are Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball and Grace Kelly. As we all know, that could change as soon as tomorrow. I guess we'll see...

Good luck UGA PNMs! :)

The pseudonyms of the different GLOs are really unique this year! Good work, PNMs (with a nod to the PNMmoms)!!

I just love "Sugar Kane" in Some Like It Hot, so Marilyn Monroe is my guess!

Just want to add that not all of those 18 sororities participate in formal recruitment.
:o

I'm headed up to UGA tomorrow to help at our chapter there for Day One. I always like going up to Athens!

KDLady06 08-11-2006 01:49 AM

Some not participating

GPhiB - I had no idea. Which ones aren't participating in formal recruitment? I can remove them from the list. Also, I have some close friends in Gamma Phi at UGA. They are all such sweet girls. Have a blast tomorrow.

Update: I talked to my friend a few hours ago. She is so excited for tomorrow and is now getting her beauty sleep. I'm so excited for her! She said she will call me as soon as she's done with her parties tomorrow (probably around 5pm EST).

PS: Anyone else rushing at UGA is more than welcome to post here. I haven't seen news of anyone else participating in recruitment there. I'd love to hear how it all goes!

GPhiBLtColonel 08-11-2006 02:05 AM

As far as I know, there are two: DPhiE and SDT....not sure why though.

We (another alum and I) were told we'd be done with parties about 4pm tomorrow....here is the schedule passed to us:

Friday August 11, 8:00 a.m. - 3:50 p.m. ROUND ONE (day 1)
Saturday August 12, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. ROUND ONE (day 2)
Sunday August 13, 8:00 a.m. - 5:51 p.m. HOUSE TOURS ROUND TWO
Monday August 14, 8:00 a.m. - 12:47 p.m. SKITS ROUND THREE
Tuesday August 15, 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. PREFS ROUND FOUR
Wednesday August 16, 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. BID DAY

Last year, quota was in the low 60's.....

:)

KDLady06 08-11-2006 02:21 AM

DPhiE?

That's unusual. In the post entitled "SEC Recruitment coming up!" Someone said that DphiE is participating in formal recruitment. I have a few friends in SDT as well who told me they were going up early for formal recruitment as well. I'll have to ask my friend tomorrow if she is scheduled to go to either of these houses. Obviously there is some confusion about the situation. I'll keep everyone posted!

GPhiBLtColonel 08-11-2006 02:39 AM

I could be wrong but a DphiE I know here said they'd done formal recruitment along with all the other GLO's in the past but were not going to this year "like SDT" I just assumed they were doing something informal instead? I will ask tomorrow. Sorry for confusion...I should not have said anything.:o

dgdramadawg 08-11-2006 08:23 AM

The latest word I heard was that DPhiE had discussed not doing formal recruitment, but had decided to after all. SDT has participated in formal recruitment and has done pretty well since my freshman year (Fall '01), and I never heard that they might be leaving formal recruitment. Perhaps she was referring to the rumor that DPhiE may be returning to their traditionally Jewish roots like those of SDT?

Good luck to your friend!!!!

hmd1014 08-11-2006 10:58 AM

I think it was said in another thread that DPhiE is participating in formal recruitment as part of a chapter reorganization.

GPhiBLtColonel 08-11-2006 05:22 PM

Just got back from UGA and both DPhiE and SDT are participating. So my bad for earlier saying they were not.

The chapter president told me that they were having about 72 girls per party -- 11 today. So multiply that by the 18 sororities there and that is almost 1300 girls registered for recruitment!!! Wow!!

It appeared that UGA Panhel underwrote the cost to erect canvas tent-tops in front of each house to try and offset the heat. Every house had them - none did last year. Today was slightly overcast - though still scorching - so they were not needed as much.

I was very proud of our chapter - they had such energy today! I loved what they all wore: white dresses (most were strapless) with a bright colorful sash and complementary pumps/heels.

:)

KDLady06 08-11-2006 07:11 PM

Day One

I just got done talking to my friend online! I was waiting all day for her update. She had a blast, but it was a scorcher outside. And for everyone who has been through rush before (especially at an SEC school) it is a long day indeed. She went to 11 houses today and here's what she thought of them (in order of preference).

Katherine Hepburn - Very nice house and landscaping. Girls were energetic and engaging. Wasn't expecting anything special, but really got along great with the girls. Many of the girls rushing her shared similar interests.

Jane Fonda - Really enjoyed going to this house. The girls were very upbeat, beautiful, and fun. One of the more competetive sororities on campus, but were all genuinely nice and seemed happy to have her.

Shelley Winters - Absolutely loved the girls at this house. They were all down to earth and the conversation took off instantly. The house was quite stunning, and she is really hoping to get invited back to this one.

Bette Davis - This was her first house of the day, which was intimidating. However, she really connected with several of the girls she talked to. Although she really enjoyed this house, she is not sure if she could fit in there.

Grace Kelly - Although this was one of her prospective favorites, she didn't feel at home as much as she had thought she would. The girls were all very sweet and enthusiastic. Their house was really "cute." She wants to go back because she feels the few girls she talked to she didn't get a chance to make a connection with yet.

Barbara Streisand - My friend loved this house, and the girls were all very beautiful and welcoming. She's not sure she can fit in here yet, but she would love a chance to meet some more of the girls, and find out more about the sorority.

Lauren Bacall - This house was very overwhelming. The girls were are very pretty and friendly, but my friend didn't get much of a chance to connect with any of the girls. She talked to a lot of people, and none of them really clicked with her. However she would like to give this house a second chance.

Dorothy Dandridge - This is a house many of her friend's have encouraged her to join. She however, does not feel like it would be the right fit for her. While all the girls were very friendly and interesting, she does not feel like this could be a home. She would like to go back and see if anything changes.

Julie Andrews - My friend didn't feel like she made a real bond with any of the girls here. The conversation seemed to lag, and the girls didn't really seem to be interested in her. She doesn't feel like she'd like to go back to this house.

Judy Garland - She said this house had a lot of very sweet girls, but that she doesn't see herself as becoming a part of this sorority. She really liked one girl she talked to, but the others didn't seem to have much in common with her.

Ava Gardner - Many of the girls were really nice at this house, however she feels it is not the place for her. She did not make a connection with any of the girls at this house. She felt pressured to ask alot of questions, and she can not see herself as becoming a part of this sorority.

I am so excited to be living vicariously through her. I know she will find a great home! The rest of round one is tomorrow (7 houses) and I will update when I hear from her.

FSUZeta 08-11-2006 07:18 PM

thanks kdlady06. i am so excited for your friend.it is great that she is hoping to get to visit some of the houses that did not sell her yet-that shows wisdom beyond her years!! i hope she has as much fun tomorrow and gets asked back to all her favorites.

Good luck to your friend! I'm glad to hear that she had a fairly full day with lots of parties. I hope she's having fun.

Round One day 2

I just got in touch with my friend. She pretty much passed out after her second day. She said she had a blast though. She went to 7 houses today. This is what she thought of them (in order of preference).

Lucille Ball - This is a house my friend has been interested in since the beginning of recruitment. As of now, this is her top choice. She said all the girls were very friendly, and she felt a bond with them. I really hope she will get invited back to visit them.

Doris Day - This is a house my friend did not know much about before recruitment, and was very pleasantly surprised about today. She said each girl was very sweet and welcoming. She also liked the way these sisters interacted with eachother.

Elizabeth Taylor - Although my friend really enjoyed her time at this house, and had a lot of fun with all the girls she talked too, she's not sure if she would fit in at this house. She is hoping to go back and see if she feels more at home here next time.

Mary Tyler Moore - This is another house my friend wasn't expecting much from, but she really loved it. Just goes to show you, reputations don't mean much in the sorority world. She said the girls were all really excited and happy to see her. She is really hoping to go back.

Audrey Hepburn - Although she was really expecting to love this house, she is not sure if this is the right home for her. She said the house and girls were all beautiful and that she felt very welcome here, however she is not sure that she can see herself as a part of their sisterhood. She would like to go back and meet some more of the sisters.

Marilyn Monroe - My friend already knew a few girls in this house before recruitment. Although she was friends with them in high school, she is not sure if she can see herself as their sister. She said that the girls at this house were very energetic and seemed excited about their philanthropy.

Donna Reed - My friend told me that this house was fun, but didn't stand out as a strong connection in her mind. She said the girls were all gorgeous and so nice, but she doesn't feel like this could be a home for her. However, she understands 20 minutes isn't much time to make a connection, and would accept an opportunity to return.

All in all a good day for her. She finds out which houses she goes back to tomorrow morning. It is possible to return to 12, but not many girls get this opportunity. I'm so glad she's having a fun time. I'm a little worried about the cuts tomorrow, I know they will be pretty severe. She is such a strong and confident girl and I know she will take it all in stride. I'm so excited for her, and I know wherever she ends up will be a great home for her. For anyone else rushing at UGA - best of luck tomorrow. Hang in there, when you see all your sisters welcoming you with open arms and cheering on bid day, you will know it was all worth it.

Hope everyone is doing well. I will try to update tomorrow when I hear back.

dgdramadawg 08-13-2006 05:40 AM

I had a very similar experience to your friend's... certain houses I expected to love and others I knew nothing about. But it seems like she's keeping an open mind and she has lots of favorites... awesome!!!!

KDLady06 08-13-2006 12:34 PM

I'm so nervous/excited

This morning my friend found out which houses she is going back to (a possible 12), and then went right off to these houses. So, I won't be hearing back from her until tonight, and I absolutely can't wait. I am so nervous for her, probably more nervous than she is haha. I can't wait to hear where she is going back to. I'll keep everyone posted as soon as I find out. I'm sure she is having a great time today at second round which is skit round! When I went through rush I loved skit round. I felt like I really got to see how the sisters got along and what type of personality the different houses had. Anyway, I'm sure she'll probably call me around dinner time. Until then, I'll be praying for her all day.

BBelleADPi 08-13-2006 02:32 PM

On the same note, I found out this morning that a girl I wrote a rec for to UGA was invited back to 12 houses today, as was her roommate. Her mother was so relieved! She did get cut by one sorority she really liked, as did her friend, but they are both thrilled to death to be going to so many houses today. I reminded the mother to remind her daughter-it only takes ONE! Especially closer to prefs, as cuts are more drastic, and many girls who get several invites earlier in the week may only get invited back to a few prefs, or even one pref-each girl can ONLY pledge ONE sorority!! Her mother is going to update me tomorrow on both the girls, and there's one other girl we don't have any info on yet. Hopefully, things are going well w/ her. She's an in-house legacy.

(KDLady, I hope it's OK to butt into your thread! I didn't want to make a thread because I wasn't sure if I would get updates or not!)

KDLady06 08-13-2006 09:30 PM

Round 2

I just got off the phone with my friend. She was a little dissapointed to only get asked back to 7. But the average for all the girls was 6, so I think that's awesome.

Now for the big news...drumroll...

She got asked back to: Lucille Ball and Grace Kelly, two of her favorites from the beginning. Lucille Ball was her top choice, and still is after round 2!

She also went back to:

Jane Fonda - She really liked this house again. She said the girls were very sweet, and one girl she felt like she could really be good friends with. She loves this house, but is not sure it is the right home for her. She would like to go back and see how it goes.

Doris Day - She really liked this house today. She said the girls were very happy to see her and seemed very close with eachother. She thought the conversation with the last girl she talked with seemed a little forced though. She is worried she may not be asked back here.

Dorothy Dandridge - She still feels the same way about this house as she did before. While she has a few friends here, she is not sure if it is the right home for her. She would like to give them another chance, but there are a few other houses where she feels a better connection.

Judy Garland - Round two has not changed my friend's opinion of this house. Although she said the girls were very outgoing and enthusiastic, she does not feel like she has enough in common with these girls to become a part of their sisterhood.

and

Ava Gardner - She feels the same way about this group as Judy Garland

Lucille Ball and Grace Kelly are her top two choices right now. She is thrilled to have been asked back to both of them. She really feels like either of these houses could be a home for her.

She finds out her results tomorrow morning, and then goes back to those houses. She is very excited and taking her cuts with extreme poise. I am so proud of her. I can't wait to see where she ends up. More updates tomorrow evening.

KDlady

PS - In case you are hoping she will pledge your house, my friend has been cut by (in no order whatsoever) Kappa Delta :( , Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Omicron Pi, Delta Zeta, Zeta Tau Alpha, Sigma Kappa, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta, Alpha Delta Pi, and Phi Mu.

Thanks for all of your support! Can't wait to find out what happens tomorrow. Meanwhile I am getting ready for rush at my own school. As my first time on the other side, I am VERY excited. I just can't wait to meet my new potential sisters.

BBelle,

It is completely fine with me that you post your updates on my board. I welcome anyone with exciting news from UGA recruitment. I am so excited to hear about your girls getting invited back to 12 houses, that is amazing! Do you know if either of them is going back to KD? All the houses are great, but I have to say I might be a tiny bit partial  . Can't wait to hear another update on these girls!

I can't wait

I'm getting so nervous waiting to hear back from my friend! I can't wait to hear which houses she went back to today. I'll let everyone know ASAP. Let's cross our fingers and hope she got asked back to Lucille Ball and Grace Kelly. Anyway, hope everyone is having a great day!

I wanna know...

I'm dying to know which houses are which! I'm always curious to hear a new take on what someone thinks each year.

KDLady06 08-14-2006 07:20 PM

Round 2

I finally got in touch with my friend! She had a really rough day. According to her, a lot of girls did. Her Rho Chi said that cuts have been really severe this year. 1300 hundred girls registered for recruitment, and there is only room in quota for around 900. She was unforunately cut from Lucille Ball :( . However, she was invited back to:

Grace Kelly - She loves this house! The girls are very much like her. Sweet girls who seem very caring and laid back. She also liked how all the girls were very pretty but not intimidating. She is really hoping that this can be the home for her.

Jane Fonda - My friend really loved this house today. She has gone somewhat back and forth here, but today she talked to a girl she loved. She also really enjoyed seeing some girls she had talked to during first and second round. She can really see herself being sisters with some of these ladies.

Doris Day - She was really surprised to be asked back to this house. The girls are incredibly sweet and welcoming here, but she still is not feeling much of a connection with them. She would love to go back for pref round, as many people have told her that pref is when you will really feel which sorority is your home.

Dorothy Dandridge - She has given this house many tries, and even though she loves talking to girls here, she can not see herself as their sisters. She is excited to know she can be friends with them outside of sorority life.

Judy Garland and Ava Gardner - Despite another return to this house. My friend knows that this is not the home for her. She said all the girls were great, and she already knew a couple of girls in here, but it's just not the right sorority for her.

She was really dissapointed to be cut from Lucille Ball, but 5 out of 6 for skit round is pretty amazing. I am hoping she gets her choices for pref. I am so excited for her. Bid day is on Wednesday! I'll keep you posted when she tells me which houses she got to pref!

UGA recruitment has been brutal this year. I want to tell all the girls out there rushing to hang in there and stick it out. Pref round can really change everything, and you won't believe how at home you can feel, and how emotional you may get. You don't have to accept a bid, but you should really consider sticking it out through pref. Remember, all the sororities at UGA are really wonderful organizations. Best of luck to everyone!

-KD lady

BBelleADPi 08-14-2006 07:21 PM

Well, I received an email from "my" girl! But, I'm going to kill her, all she said was that she loved the skits she saw, couldn't believe they were so elaborate, and she ate some really great food! And that she is VERY tired! What she DIDN'T tell me was how many she went to, nor who they were! Well, she did mention one sorority's name that she loved and is hoping to get an invite to, but that was it! Now she's in trouble...tomorrow morning, I'm calling her mom :D to see how many and who she prefs (if any, and I SURE hope so!). Oh, she did say that yesterday she had gotten invited back to 13 houses, but could only go to 12, of course. Her's hoping I can post back her with some good news!

FSUZeta 08-14-2006 07:31 PM

i don't understand how there can be room for only 900 bids out of 1300 enrolled pnms.

quota is supposed to be set, basically, by dividing the number of participating pnms by the number of chapters on a chosen given day.for example, state tech u. sets quota on day 3 of a 5 day recruitment. 800 girls are still participating in recruitment on that day. there as 10 chapters, so quota would be 80 pnms per chapter.

perhaps your friend misunderstood? maybe you friend meant that out of 1300 original pnms, there are now only 900 pnms remaining in recruitment?

KDLady06 08-14-2006 07:35 PM

I'm not sure

I'm not sure. That's what she told me her RX told her. I went through recruitment last fall (at an SEC school) and mine worked the way you explained. Maybe UGA has a policy that each sorority can only have a maximum number of members? Like I said, I'm not very familiar with recruitment there, and maybe the RX misspoke, or my friend interpreted it incorrectly. If it is true, it's very sad to hear. I can't believe there are so many fabulous PNMs who can't be placed due to restrictions such as these. If anyone is working with recruitment at UGA, can you please clarify how quota works?

Quota is set at prefs based on # of girls at that point divided by 18. There are usually only about 900 PNMs at this point.

IHeartUGA 08-14-2006 08:01 PM

Georgia

UGA has a house total of 188ish. Quota is done slightly differently because UGA is using a return rate system this year that they started using last year. The top houses, meaning the ones with the largest numbers), have to cut around 75% of the girls after round 1. That way, they don't drag along the girls all the way through prefs knowing they are not going to take them. In the past, this has gotten a lot of girls' hopes up and a large number of girls end up suiciding, thinking they're getting their top choice, only to be cut; or, they drop out of rush when they are not invited back to certain houses. Last year, about 1200 girls went through rush and about 200 ended up dropping. That drop rate has been pretty consistent in the past so I'm sure that panhellenic factors that in somehow when setting quota. Additionally, about 100 girls last year were left without bids after prefs. So, by looking at the numbers: 1300 going through rush - 200ish dropping - 100ish not getting bids, 900 is about right.

THEREFORE,

QUOTA is not factored until after round 3 is over. That means that the girls will not know what quota is until tomorrow. I do know that it will be somewhere in the 50's. Last year I believe it was 54.

KDLady06 08-14-2006 08:12 PM

Thanks!

Thanks for clearing that up! I'll be sure to pass this information on to my friend. I'm just glad her cuts haven't been too severe. She said she knows quite a few girls who dropped after today. She's such a beautiful and fun girl, but if you've ever been to UGA, you'll know that all of the girls are. Anyway, recruitment can be quite hard on every girl. I wish there were a better way, because it can be so discouraging. I tell every girl I know to just make it through pref round, and go to bid night. It's so hard to really get to know a sorority, just like it's hard for them to get to know you. Anyway, I'm rambling. My cuts weren't too bad during rush, but that doesn't mean I didn't have my fair share of dissapointment. I'm so happy where I am now, and I hope all these girls can just stick it out until Wednesday.

PS- The one house she was cut from was Tri-Delt, if you are still hoping for your house. She was really bummed, but she's got a lot of great options left!

Best to everyone,

KD lady

i would guess that the release system that uga is using is the same one that fsu uses. the chapters at fsu who have the highest return rates(meaning that when those sororities extend invitations to the next round of parties, a very high precentage of the invitations are accepted) have to release more pnms early on. the hope behind this is that the pnms who are not invited back to these chapters, will remain in recruitment and concentrate on the invitations they do have.

each campus can set quota whenever they want. if they set it based on the girls remaining going into prefs. that works well for both the pnm and the chapters. you get a truer number. quota does not affect total-quota is the one time that you can go above total(unless you have initiated members who affialiate from another chapter

kdlady, you have shared some great advice with your friends. i hope that they listen to you and that they all find a happy home at georgia!!

I just graduated from UGA in May...I'm an Alpha Gam :)

UGA is special because everyone pretty much knows what house they want before they even start the first day of rush. If girls know members of certain houses they feel that they have an "in" and if they get cut they either 1. feel that they can't go on because they've only focused on particular houses that have now rejected them or 2. have been told to drop because they can get snapped in. That's why I think the Rho Chi's need to do a better job explaining things to them. And yes you are right, the girls at UGA are GORGEOUS. I was beyond intimidated when I went through.

But anyway I love rush. I love it so much I am an advisor now. I wish that the girls going through had more of an open mind because there are some really great sororities at Georgia.
