Terrorist Attempt Stopped
I can't believe no one's posted this already!
Updated: 14 minutes ago LONDON - British authorities said Thursday they had thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up several aircraft heading to the U.S. using explosives smuggled in hand luggage, averting what police described as “mass murder on an unimaginable scale.” Meantime, a U.S. counterterrorism official called the plot "the real deal." Story on MSN Kinda scary. |
I heard about it this morning while getting dressed. This plot has raised the level to red and will now prevent passengers from carrying liquids, including hair gel, on the planes. :(
|
What's scarier is that my friend is flying out this morning. |
Scary situation.
Those Brit intelligence types are pretty damned good. |
I'm hoping that liquids are allowed back onto planes before we head to Mexico in October. It would SUCK SO BADLY to not be able to take my make-up, toothpaste, and sun-tan lotion. Although, I do confirm that it would suck even more to be blown-up mid-flight.

Shampoo bottles explode though... zip them in plastic bags before you go!
|
It's a little inconvenient, but I'll bet you can buy all of those things in Mexico if you can't take them along.
|
I'm flying out tonight and was hoping to just bring carry-on luggage since I'll only be gone for the weekend. Does anyone know where I can find out about the heightened security measures?
|
I would call the airport.
|
My kids are making their first unaccompanied flight today, to Florida, to see their Grandpa. My ex-husband is freaking out. I think today will be the safest day to fly. They're checking everything so carefully.
CNN, etc. all have the heightened security info posted. |
This is from the London Times, so I'd take it with a grain of salt (unless you're flying to London). Like KLPDaisy said, I'd call the airport. In the meantime, read this:

Here's the stuff from the TSA web site:

Thanks for the help with the heightened security info!
|
I fly out to NY tomorrow. I will severly miss my handcream and toothpaste. I better check the Air Canada website and see what their restrictions are.

In related? news, they stopped two middle eastern men in Ohio were pulled over on a routine traffic stop. In the car, there was found to be $11,000 cash, a glut of disposable cell phones, airline passenger lists, and analyses of airport security checkpoints.
http://www.wtap.com/news/headlines/3534986.html In other related? news, 3 Egyptian students were picked up after disappearing subsequent to their entry to the U.S. on student visas and failing to report to school. 8 remain at large. There is no terror link thought to exist at this time. http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/08/09/D8JD6QVG0.html |

Aww hunny. Don't be. They've stepped up security hardcore. If anything, he'll be safer today.

I am planning to fly to London this weekend. As is my usual practice, I will have a ham sandwich in my briefcase, or if no food is allowed I will have some pigskin driving gloves with me. If one of those moral cowards makes a move to take out the plane my plan is to simply belt him with my ham annointed knuckles or my driving gloves and tell him 'go on and do your thing shit head, you are now defiled'. A Muslim chaplain from my active Army days told me that the strict interpretation was if a Muslim so much as touches pork he is defiled and cannot enter paradise untill purefied, even if a martyr. This is not held by all Muslims but fundamentalists do seem to accept this concept, I am told.
I have no patience with those who seek to do horrible things in the name of God and try to justify their actions as "God's will". I don't care if the shit head in question is Muslim, Jew, or Christian, the last time I looked the COMMANDMENT "Thou shalt not do murder" applies to us all. The sort of murderous cowardice these terrorists practice is a lie before God and I suspect He would be royally furious at such blasphemy. As a side thought, the American people tend to be slow to anger and will forgive a lot, but once that anger is aroused... |
The MI5 and MI6 (british intelligence and major crimes...CIA and FBI basically) are pretty thorough, but they've been having some major PR problems following a mis-procedure searching for chemical weapons in London's suburbs a few months ago, and there's still some fallout from the 7/7 bombings.
Just got done talking to my friends in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Luton...basically, everyone's staying home. Airports are simply pointless at this stage. some are chosing to queue, but the connecting flights are going to be a mess. As for the hand luggage- the discount airliners make a FORTUNE off of Brits taking weekend trips and flying to Ireland/the continent for business- taking only a carry on. |
Even in the seriousness of this situation...I couldnt help but find myself laughing at dekeguy's post

Fighter Jets keep taking off from Dobbins in Atlanta. A lot more than usual. They must really be worried something is going to happen
|
So, um, I am by no means an expert on explosives, but from what I heard on the news this morning, my understanding is that people might bring, say, two different liquids onto a plane and the shit happens when they get mixed together. So, um, WTF:
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/dayart...50SEATAC02.jpg Is it really a good idea to, you know, just be mixing all this shit together, just in case there's something bad in there? |

Yeah, by 10a.m., the local news finally explained that it was only liquids that were carried on board. I think I can deal with the new restrictions. The no-ipod thing will suck, though.

I was supposed to fly to Chicago today, but was so sick, decided that I didn't need to spend a weekend away from home feeling lousy. I am SO GLAD, because I have my suitcases packed a precise way at all times, and would have freaked if I'd have to change everything around.
I did hear that in several airports, returning tourists are just leaving bottles of wine (CA), barbeque sauce (TX), hot sauce (LA), etc in the airport lobbies, so someone can still use them. It will be interesting to see what they do with that stuff. |
OK, since my kids were flying as unaccompanied minors, I got a gate pass and got to sit and observe while they screened everybody, so here's what I saw:
The ipod thing is only for Britain. My kids had an ipod, cell phone and Game Boy with them and those were not a problem. Neither was the portable nebulizer (for the asthma). ANYTHING liquid or gel like was taken away from people. This included mascara, lip gloss, lotions, etc. Most people were ok with it, but one senior citizen lady was flipping out about a $50 bottle of face lotion and some expensive perfume. What they are going to do with that stuff, who knows. We went through the initial security checkpoint like always.. remove shoes, metal, put your stuff on the conveyer. HOWEVER, when they started boarding, then they went through each carry on bag and frisked every single passenger. Since they started boarding at the usual time, this did make the plane slightly delayed. I guess they were worried about people getting something between the initial check in and boarding the plane, since all the little news stands and stuff sell things that are liquid. Overall, I felt much better about the kids flying after seeing everything they went through with each person, even though it took a while. And, they arrived safely in St. Petersburg and my dad found them with no trouble. I didn't completely relax until he called and said they were in his possession though. I must admit, I am so relieved that they are gone for a little while because with juggling work, my mom in the hospital and the kids for a month now, I'm wiped out. One less thing on my plate is really helpful. I might actually get some sleep over the next week. Phew. |
Thank God that the terrorist were captured. I rather be safe than sorry. I'm thinking about heading to Brimingham in October, but I'm not flying there. I might take the bus.
BTW, is deodorant on the list? |

It took me about 5 minutes or less to get through security at PHL today. It seriously was not that bad, they told people that no liquids were allowed starting at the ticketing counters, so by the time people got to the security checkpoint, there was no problem with prohibited items.
The only thing that ticked me off was they made me take off my Rainbows and walk through the metal detector barefoot. Ew, I washed my feet off in the bathroom after that. I usually wear flip flops because you DON'T have to take them off and hold up the line. Seriously, do I look like a jail inmate who makes shanks out of toothbrushes and hides them in the 1/2 inch rubber sole of my flip flop? |
International Flight + No Toothpaste = Yuck :(

I would recommend some sort of slip ons with socks to avoid that type of thing. |
They showed a lady at the Atlanta airport getting arrested because she wouldn't throw her makeup that was liquid/pastey away and still tried to get past securirty to get on her plane.
