Jean Skirts?

Do you think that lighter or darker skirts will be in next season? And what about leggings?

ADqtPiMel 07-30-2006 10:38 AM

STEP AWAY FROM THE LEGGINGS. Unless it is 1985, and you are a jazzercise instructor, there is no good reason for the reckless use of spandex legwear.

Also, I think dark denim always looks better than light.

Agreed on both parts. And for most schools' rushes, it should still be pretty warm, and you would die in leggings and a skirt.

When someone says light denim, I can't help thinking of acid-washed and the almost-white jeans of the 80's. JUST SAY NO.

Dark denim is much more flattering and attractive.

May I also suggest avoiding the mini skirt? I dunno bout the rest of you, but knee length or slightly above tends to look more presentable to me. Some of those skirts look like you're wearing a tube top over your rear.

Ohh... I hate to break this to everyone out there.. but leggings are going to be the "in" look this fall. Yep.. everything that is old is new again. I've already seen them being pushed in the Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales fall catalogs.

http://search.bloomingdales.com/exec...ggings&x=0&y=0

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/features...e-dots-utility

And yes.. "Flashdance" sweatshirts and sweaters are back in as well. Just thank goodness they horrid padded shoulders aren't back!

preciousjeni 07-30-2006 12:14 PM

Quick hijack...

Has anyone noticed that the ankle length leggings overlayed with a mini-skirt coming back? I'm scared!

ETA: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! blueangel, you've confirmed my worst fears. That sun-sentinal articles says:

Quote:

Leggings are back. Here in hot and humid SoFla that trend might flop, but girls just might flip for legwarmers, knee socks or capri-length leggings under a short denim skirt. (Hilary Duff packages a pair of leggings with patch-covered miniskirts in her tween-targeted line called Stuff.)

We'll see how well they take off in real life. Some of this stuff is built up to be the next big trend and it never really takes off as much as they want it to.

And it's probably still not appropriate for rush, unless it's more of a later in the fall rush.

kddani, I've seen it! I've seen it! My eyes!!!!!!! There are young women/girls walking around my local mall looking CRAZY with these outfits.

WTF, this is as bad as uggs in the summer. It's 90-some degrees throughout the majority of the country.

Just because some people wear them does not mean that we all should! lol.

tunatartare 07-30-2006 01:08 PM

Unfortunately I've seen girls dressed like that to bars. However, even if you like that look, it's not a good idea to go to rush wearing the same thing that you would wear to a bar/club with your girlfriends on a Saturday night.

Jimmy Choo 07-30-2006 01:14 PM

I just recently left a job in retail and was utterly appauled that in fact, leggings are making a comeback!!! I don't really think they are appropriate for rush however. But on a sidenote: how long before legwarmers and the 2 colors of tubesocks make a comeback as well?

scbelle 07-30-2006 01:18 PM

All I have to say is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

33girl 07-30-2006 03:22 PM

One of my friends has been cutting off tights to make leggings under a skirt for over a year now. She looks fabulous. However, she would look fabulous in a paper sack.

Unless you are SUPER SUPER SUPER skinny - I'm talking no butt, no hips, no thighs - don't do leggings under a straight skirt. I was a lot thinner the last time those were around and I still wouldn't have dared wear them.

Same with light denim - you'd better be skinny to carry it off.

m0nkeys 07-30-2006 05:13 PM

The thing with fashion trends, at least in America, is that they are bastardized soon after mass production. We all know the 80s has come back. It's evident with the latest trends that have come by lately.

Yes, leggings will be "in" this FALL, presumably when it's cold, but you know girls will walk around with them on regardless of the weather (think Uggs). I personally think leggings are cute depending on the girls stature and what she's wearing it with. I don't think the jean skirts + leggings is cute, especially when everyone and her mother is wearing it. But if you want to get into specifics about Fall trends, leggings will definitely be there, paired with a long top, such as a tunic. I haven't seen much in terms of skirts but...you never know.

I don't see trends as a big deal like I used to. If you do a little research, you'll find that some of them are really nice and classy. But like I said earlier, mass production ruins everything because everyone looks like clones. That's a problem.

But, I digress.

What ever happened to individuality? Oh yeah. That was so last season.:p

ADqtPiMel 07-30-2006 05:37 PM

The one good thing I can see with the leggings/miniskirt combo is that it minimizes my chances of having to see anyone's lady bits.

My personal fave leggings were on a girl today in the mall. They were skull patterned AND lace trimmed. Gotta love an article of clothing that can express your morbidity and femininity all in one.

LightBulb 07-31-2006 01:41 AM

what about leggings and a minidress... think of the possibilities

I read that they tried to push legwarmers last season, but they just didn't catch on. The proposed explanation was that they make almost everyone look fat.

Sadly, I've seen quite a number of girls at my school wearing legwarmers.

AlphaFrog 07-31-2006 09:15 AM

This thread made me do a Daria flashback:

Tiffany - Ugh, stretch pants. Everywhere, stretch pants.
Stacy - Hey, these are stretch pants! I'm wearing stretch pants!
(Stacy panics and starts to hyperventilate; Sandi rushes over, grabs her arms, and shakes)
Sandi - They're leggings! They're leggings!
(Stacy lets out a high-pitched squeak of relief)

FloridaTish 07-31-2006 01:08 PM

At least they're not Stirrup Pants...

I am having seriously scary visions of bold, primary-color, geometric print oversized sweaters paired with an equaly bold color leggings/stirrup pants with slouchy suede boots for this Fall season.

If you can't invision the outfit I'm thinking of, watch some 1985-1986 era Facts of Life reruns. You'll shudder...Trust me.

If anyone ever tries to bring back the "BIG" hair of the 80's, I will slit my wrists. I am originally from Georgia and I think that us Georgia girls had the biggest hair this side of the Mason Dixon line.

It has to be. No one in their right mind would smile wearing that tragedy of an outfit - no matter how much $$$ they were paid.

kddani 07-31-2006 01:43 PM

please, God, do not let them bring back stirrup pants or bodysuits.

Excuses for bodysuits:

Cheerleading
http://gtmsportswear.com/flash/375to...H/BS9310CH.jpg

Babies
http://www.greenbabyco.com/acatalog/...0bodysuits.jpg

Sports (although can be questionable still)

Superheros

If you do not fall into any of those categories...leave the bodysuit in the closet (in the far back with the rest of the 80's wear).

adpiucf 07-31-2006 02:05 PM

This thread makes me laugh. In all seriousness, keep length in mind. You'll be sitting, standing and possibly squatting at events where seating is scarce. You might even sit on the floor in some cases to play a getting-to-know-you game.

Dark or light denim is fine (dark is my personal preference-- more slimming and looks classier). Don't go with any crazy holes or distressed fabric. Ripped material is never appropriate for recruitment, even if the event is casual.

knitsnpurls 07-31-2006 02:10 PM

Urban Outfitters had stirrup pants on their website a few months ago :( It gave me flashbacks of my scary first grade teacher who always wore them with her matching Sam & Libby flats.

AlphaFrog 07-31-2006 02:11 PM

Where did ya'll get the idea that she was asking for recruitment dress advice?? I'm confused...the OP never mentioned Recruitment:confused:  I think some of ya'll are on Recruitment overdrive. :p

tunatartare 07-31-2006 02:12 PM

It's in the rush forum.

kddani- I saw bodysuits in the VS fall catalog and on the website.

Oh but it will come back..... b/c it was such a good idea the first time! Will we bring back the music as well? Truly that was the only good thing about the 80's.....

It's already back. *cough* Kelly Clarkson ripping off Madonna c.1989 *cough*

blueangel 07-31-2006 02:40 PM

And yes, I do have stirrup pants, but I only wear them when on a horse!

As much as everybody is ripping on the 80's...

would you rather have grunge/babydoll dresses/unwashed hair back?

Yuck.

adpiucf 07-31-2006 02:48 PM

In response to the above... I'm so happy... 'cause today I found my friends... :)

Trying to figure out which of these is the lesser of two evils.

Olivia just looks so much happier. Must be all the jazzercise.

Let's get physical... physical...

kddani, just for you, courtesy of Victoria's Secret:

The cami's built in, along with a mesh thong. Stylin'.

ETA: And KillarneyRose, 2 weeks ago, I went shoe shopping and saw jellie's being sold. In a cute little boutique no less. Right next to some sexy stilettos. What is the world coming to?

PenguinTrax 07-31-2006 03:54 PM

OK, this has veered WAY off topic, so I'm moving it to CC where I'm sure the fun will continue...

Hi!
I was actually asking for recruitment attire advice... sorry I didn't mention that.

In the first day, we're supposed to wear the recruitment t-shirts and jean skirts, and I wanted to make sure that what I had bought was okay. I have a short, dark blue jean skirt with no rips (because I think rips look trashy). I've also been contemplating black leggings, since I've been seeing them in a lot of magazines. But, I'm still undecided.
