Don't forget little brother Moses Martin. And of course Sean Preston Federline, who doesn't need a stupid name to have a target on his forehead.

And, while I find no fault with this name due to the ethnic heritage of its bearer, there's Dakota Starblanket Wolfchild the child of Buffy St. Marie and Sheldon Wolfchild.

The funny thing is how normal that sounds now. LOL. I love Buffy, she's so pretty. I remember her being on Sesame Street.

Ethic is one thing (I actually like the name Dakota), my daughter doesn't have the looks to be a Jennifer or Susie, which is why we picked a Hispanic name...insane is another (Moxie Crimefighter:rolleyes: ).

Jennifer is THE name for Latin girls in the Bronx!! (and no, not just stupid azz J-Lo - REAL girls "from the Bronx").

My children, who also will not probably look too Anglo, might have Spanish name - but ones that can be Anglicized (Alejandro = Alex). That way both sides of the family can pronounce it right. :)

I wana rock the pure dago names... Isabella and Rosalia. And maybe a little Attiana- sounds Italian but don't really know the origin. Just know that I LOVED the name when I heard it on Meet the Barkers.

Agree with Kathy on this one. 6 years of going to school in Bronx taught me that Jennifer and Jessica are quite popular there. (Or Yennifer and Yessica if you prefer.) We actually had a girl in my HS who's legal name was Yennifer.

I have asked dear husband about this - why do your people love an English name so much that is so difficult for them to pronounce? He thinks this is an excellent question but, alas, has no answer. :p

I don't "have the looks" to be a Cynthia, yet I'm Cynthia. I actually only have ONE cousin who doesn't have an "English" (Anglo-sounding) name.

Maybe that wasn't important to your family. It was for ours. We decided on Mariana, but if she didn't come out looking like a Mariana, we would have found a different name.

Actually, it isn't just my family, but Chinese immigrants in general. Most don't think it's important to have only a Chinese name. Most have both, with the Chinese name only used by older family members.

I remember having a Chinese exchange student and here she went by Katie...I couldn't even being to pronounce her Chinese name. One of my friends in college though, Ng Gee Min, didn't want to take an English name.

I went to a high school that was 66% Asian. A lot of the Asian students had legal names that were in Chinese or Korean but went by American names. My friend's name was Jing something or other (like AlphaFrog, I too, couldn't pronounce her name) but she went by Alice.

Anyone noticed that the American names that immigrant Asian-Americans or their first generation children have tend to be more old-fashioned? Especially for the girls? Alice for example above or I know one girl named Sally... the only Sally I've ever met. Her brothers are Kris and Kevin, older names but boys names age better than girls.

I don't think either of those names are that old fashioned. I actually know a Sally, and she's our age.

Yeah, and so is this Sally, but you know ONE... I don't even know an Alice. I'm just saying they tend to be older, less commonly used names these days.

It's not bad. They just haven't followed the trend of weirder names these days...

Better a Sally or an Alice than a Millicent. I went to middle school with a Millicent.

Hmmm...the most common names of Asian girls in my high school were:

Jennifer (common for people my age, anyway)--4 people
Karen--5 people
Amy--3 people

This was a class of 86 girls, close to half being Asian.

As for second generation: My cousin just had a baby. She came to Canada as a teen and her husband is CBC (Canadian Born Chinese). Their daughter's name is Caitlyn.

I had a high school classmate who was Thai. Her name was Ateptaya, but she went by Tanya.

Why would they name their kid after the devil? All the others, eh, whatever, but Satan?

Or were they thinking along the lines of God's favorite angel?

I don't think I've ever met an Asian Karen before. Amy is definitely popular. It's really annoying when they also have the same or similar last name as me (Chiang, Chang, Cheng, Chen, etc.) The other popular names I've seen are Grace, Cynthia, Anna/Annie, Janice, Josephine, Hannah, Connie, and Christine.
