Mildly Disturbing

I'm not sure I wanted to know that there were nearly 500 registered criminals and sex offenders in my neighborhood... but I thought it might be valuable to pass along this web site to you all so you can check out your area: http://www.familywatchdog.us/ShowMap.asp

The more you know... right?

tunatartare 07-05-2006 10:03 AM

I tried to do that for my neighborhood, the screen basically looked like the map of Manhattan was covered in confetti.

RU OX Alum 07-05-2006 01:38 PM

There is a red square right next to a school building on my map

PhoenixAzul 07-05-2006 06:04 PM

the PA megan's law website posts pictures of these guys...and some of them (vast majority) are HARDCORE CREEPY. As in, nightmare worthy! I showed the site to my professors in Belfast, and they were AMAZED that it was legal (no such thing in the UK due to the Human Rights Act).

KSUViolet06 07-05-2006 10:13 PM

708 in my area.

Rio_Kohitsuji 07-05-2006 10:23 PM

It only showed 21 (known) around my area. I noticed all the rape category people all lived very-very close to eachother....hmm.

VandalSquirrel 07-05-2006 10:57 PM

There's 20 in my town of about 20,000. I recognize some of them, a downfall of living in a small town.

Me too - that's disturbing.

SoCalGirl 07-07-2006 02:48 AM

Distance: 0.01 miles

A meer three buildings away. :(

DSTRen13 07-07-2006 09:07 AM

There aren't too many in our area ... of course, I live in the middle of nowhere right now. Still, I hope my little sister doesn't see this website, she'll never leave the house again.

bruinaphi 07-07-2006 10:50 AM

Everyone should check out the sight for registered sex offenders in their area regularly. Last year someone sent me an email with a link to one and when I checked it out I discovered that my manager's son, who lived with him & had access to all apartments in the building (used to let repair people in and out), was a convicted sex offender.

He was not on the manager's lease, but the landlord refused to do anything about it. I moved.

LouisaMay 07-07-2006 10:51 AM

Zero in my area. Relief.

FAB*SpiceySpice 07-07-2006 03:33 PM

Umm...eww. There are 292 of them in the neighborhood that I am moving to in less than week, including one that is only like .37 miles away, awesome. That's in downtown Omaha though so I guess it's not that surprising....The place I live right now though, a small college town, has 150 offenders and one of them is .06 miles away from me, even better! :( This website is terrifying.

ADPiShannan 07-07-2006 03:55 PM

It looks like I have about 10-15 in my area, the closest about 4 miles from my home. It looked like all mine were old old gray haired men. Yuck.....

Only 1 was for rape, and 2 were for children offenses, the others were in green and didnt say what for.

Creepy though. I hope I dont see any of them when Im out now.... When I lived in Akron and went to U of A, we had so many in downtown it wasnt funny. Our sorority house got notices people were offenders and living in the neighborhood and when I moved a few streets from the sorority house, we'd get notices all the time about people. I actually got scared and wouldnt walk alone because some were on my way to class. Id pull into the driveway and run into our house....

I came from a small town with like a couple thousand living there so that scared the crap out of me....

Now I need to go look and see if my hometown has any...

ADPiShannan 07-07-2006 03:59 PM

Ok I looked at my hometown. We have about 5. One is down the street from my moms. The guy looks like hes 90 and he was arrested for importuning. All the rest are for sexual conduct with a minor and sexual imposition.

One guy I know too. The girl he dated was 17 and he was 18 and the mom didnt like him so she reported him...

Should a teenage guy who hooks up with a younger girl be listed along with violent sex offenders? For the sake of argument, assume that the boy and girl are within a few years age difference.

AGDee 07-08-2006 07:59 AM

That's why they tell you what they were convicted for and give the code. I prefer Michigan's sex offender website because they also give you a place to look up what the codes mean. People who are convicted of indecent exposure for urinating in a bar parking lot are also listed on those sites forever, and that seems less threatening to me that the situation you pose.

And yeah, I'd want to know if the 17 year old boy that my 15 year old daughter is dating has been convicted of having sex with a minor...

In Michigan, yes. I have a friend from high school who was in his senior year, dating I believe either a freshman or sophmore. Her parents found out they were having sex, got mad, called statutory rape. Now he will forever be on that list, even though he was just having sex with his more than willing girlfriend. (not condoning teenage sex, but this is a case of they were only a few years apart and he did jail time)

A wise man once said that he loved teenage girls because he kept getting older and they stayed the same age.

I looked up the town that I went to college in. There are a couple of kids I used to baby-sit for and about 4 houses down the street from them lives a registered sex offender. His crime was against a 13-16 year old minor so that kinda freaks me out. There is also a registered sex offender living about a block away from their school.

This is the kind of website that I try not to look out cuz it just freaks me out more than anything. One lives right down the block from me, but I also live in the city so I was kind of expecting that.

ADqtPiMel 07-09-2006 09:24 AM

There's 47 in the area where my parents live, although none in our immediate vicinity.

There's 815 near my apartment in DC, but the nearest is 5 blocks away. I'm moving to a pretty decent area of the city.

I looked up WIU also, and I just found out that there's a sex offender living in the house that my roommate and I were in my Jr. year.
