Symbol/Sign

Ok, this has been driving me nuts...I see this symbol/sign thing all over my area. From car windows and the back of a semi, to garbage containers, shopping cart collectors and utility boxes. I have no idea what it is. It seems to me that it's either the symbol for a band or a gang sign, but I live in the middle of nowhere (compared to Charlotte), and I've seen it at the grocery store closer to my house, as well as in Charlotte.
It's a circle with a triangle in the middle, and then the upper left has another triangle that sits on the circle and the upper right has a diagonal line bisecting the triangle with three curved lines coming off of it. It's hard to describe, and I can't really do a search for it, because have nothing to even search on. Does anyone know what it could be??

Drolefille 06-28-2006 02:40 PM

I have no idea, I'm trying to draw it but not helping, could you draw and scan maybe? Or draw it in paint?

Is this spraypainted or decals or what?

AlphaFrog 06-28-2006 02:46 PM

It's decals, almost like electrical tape kind of thing. But they all look perfectly the same, like they're manufactured. I got an OK likeness of it in MS Paint, but I'm not really sure how to post it.

tunatartare 06-28-2006 02:49 PM

could be a company logo or a union symbol maybe

You need a site to host it on, like flickr or photobucket or something

Disclaimer: I am HORRIBLE at MSPaint, but here it is:

Let me know if it shows up ok.

Drolefille 06-28-2006 03:10 PM

Shows up fine, but I have no clue what it is

valkyrie 06-28-2006 03:31 PM

Is there a "capture the flag" society for gay people?

DeltAlum 06-28-2006 03:32 PM

I think it's aliens.

BEST. POST. EVER.
I just about choked on my water.

I've never seen that but out in CA I notice a lot of cars with a square piece of paper in their back windshield thats red and has a white border and they have different one digit numbers in the middle. I've been dying to figure out what those are if anyone knows.

You get those from the DMV, it's like a placard that says your car has something wrong with it (ie broken windshield) and you're going to get it fixed. Mostly so you don't get pulled over and ticketed.

bluefish81 06-28-2006 06:37 PM

I think it kind of looks like a bird in a way, like a chicken. Maybe it's a chicken worshipping cult. Otherwise, I agree with DeltAlum, it's aliens.

sdbeta1 06-28-2006 06:57 PM

Alcoholics anonymous, possibly?

preciousjeni 06-28-2006 08:16 PM

I'd like to know what it is too. I'm surprised no one around here knows! :)

Oh thanks for solving that for me!

Ok, so another decal question. Those simple white ovals with letters inside them. What were they originally for? Now I see people spelling things out, or having greek letters in colors etc. but originally there were white ovals with black letters and usually the oval was ringed in black as well.

Anyone?

It's just a style of sticker. I haven't really seen people with them on their cars, but I've seen a lot of stickers like that with the black dog from Martha's Vineyard.

They're to make your car scream "I'm a tourist".

Drolefille 06-29-2006 11:48 AM

Lol, it just seemed like they had more of a purpose before... and now are just decorative.

The original ones I first saw some years ago were generally an indication of which country either the car or the person driving was from -- generally from European countries (GB, FRA, BEL, etc.). I don't know if there was anything official about them, or just a little bit of mobil nationalism.

Ah... that makes sense. Ok, I feel a bit better knowing that there was at least a purpose of some sort.

Like I've said, I've seen them with all sorts of things now including Greek letters and such.

I think it's fun today to see a Mini-Cooper, which I will always equate to Britain, with a GB oval on it.

When you stop to think of it, the pure simplicity of the design is brilliant, because people really do look at it. It's hard to miss.

That's indeed how they got started -- to identify nationality in Europe. There is a standard abbreviation for each European country. As a result, they're called Euros or Euro decals.

I've been meaning to ask questions about a decal at work. I'm convinced it is a fraternity symbol but I can't recall which one. It is very simple, a circle with a triangle in it. Any ideas?

Upside down or right side up?

SoCalGirl 07-01-2006 11:49 AM

Right side up.

eta

I did some searching on Google Images and found this: "The Sobriety Circle & Triangle Symbol, is the symbol of Alcoholics Anonymous. The equalateral triangle represents the three part answer - unity, recovery and service to a three part disease - physical, mental and spriitual, while the circle represents wholeness or oneness."

Which begs the question, why would you want everyone who sees your car to know your an alcoholic???

DeltAlum 07-01-2006 01:36 PM

You're not thinking of the symbol used in traffic when a truck or car is broken down to warn other drivers are you?

It's a right side up triangle (of course I like to think of it as a Delta), but I can't remember if there is a circle around it or not.

I almost always assume weird things I see on cars are Masonic.

But I have no idea about that one.
