Do you wear tikis?
Just wondering, which organizations wear tikis? Is this a predominately NPHC/Multicultural greek thing?
|
I'm going to guess since I don't know what a tiki is (in this sense) that it's either regional or NPHC/MCGLO.
|
I've seen pictures of some NPC sororities, but overall, yes it is predominantly an NPHC/MGLO thing.
|
What are they?
Post pics please? |
|
So it's like a lavalier except more like beads or plastic on leather cords?
|
its a wooden lavalier. I've seen a lot of folks wear them down south.
|
Gotcha, haven't seen anything like that in the midwest.. by which I mean from St. Louis to UofI Champaign

Haven't seen it in the Greek stores... and on SLU's campus the most you saw of the NPHC were jackets and a few flyers.. but never saw tikis.
But I did go shopping in Champaign and did not see these there. If they're cheaper than lavaliers and other necklaces, I'd see them as a great thing to wear in the summer. |
they cost about $16 each and you generally wear them when its too hot to wear a jacket or throw on a tshirt with letters.
I've seen them worn at clubs mostly. |
they're a lot bigger than lavalieres so they're a lot more conspicuous
|
I wouldn't think most people would wear letters at clubs with the alcohol thing. I don't know other orgs rule on that though.
I'd definately wear it with a tank and shorts.. more beachy attire (even if a beach weren't in sight). I have other SK necklaces (including a flipflop!) though that would be more appropriate for going out. And no letters w/ alcohol of course. |

People wore them at U of I (along w/dog tags), but I'm not sure that they were sold in all of the campus stores. |
Most times, you'll find that you have to order teekees (tikis) from a greek-wear website. I don't think I've EVER seen them in a store, and all the one's I've ever bought have come from one website or another. In regard to them being like lavaliers, yes and no... they're generally about 3-4 inches tall. I don't wear it to the club unless it's letters to get in discounted, but it comes off the minute I walk in the door - no letters & alcohol.
To answer the original question, though, I've seen them primarily for NPHC and cultural/multicultural greek orgs. |
i've seen themmade for NPC and IFC (specfically, ive seen GPhiB and TKE),but ive never seen members wear them before. doesnt mean they dont, since i dont associate/party with any NPC/IFC members.
so yes, perhaps tikis are more an NPHC/multicultural thing. |
i'm from the south and I've never seen them, but that doesn't surprise me.

We have two greek stores that I know of in Houston who's greek mechandise is 98% NPHC and I've seen them in those stores. Some vendors will sell them at our regional and national meetings. I have one that I got at one of the greek stores. I'll ususlly wear it to a greek party / step show. |
They exist for APO. I have a few in my collection and have given them out to new Brothers as gifts.
|
I received an AKA tiki as a crossing gift, but I've only worn it once. I'll give it some more wear this summer. :)
|
I have seen tikis, but have never worn one. Maybe it's something I may look for at Boule.

I was initiated into my sorority on the graduate level. Tikis are very popular among members of NPHC here in NYC. Many undergrad members wear them a lot. Most guys I know wear them a lot too. |
We have tikis as well. They're real popular with the bruhs... :D
|
The one Alpha tiki I got, I hung on the wall. I think I subsequently passed it along to a neo.
I gave an APO tiki as a gift to one of our neos. |
I see people wearing them all the time. I prefer seeing them on rearview mirrors instead of around necks. But to each his or her own, since it's not against protocol or necessarily a tacky piece of 'nalia.
They remind me of the Africa necklaces that were popular in the 80's and early 90's. :) |

Thanks for everyone's response.
I'm going to seek out who makes these tikis and try to sell them through an ecommerce greek store that I've been working on. I just needed to know if people wear them nationwide haha. |
echoing with chaos, i have one hanging from my r.v., but wear it, uhhh no, 'I' am just not a neckace kinda gal anyway though.
Back in the day, before I came through..I used to see peeps wearing them. I always thought they were phat! |
