"Frat"

Yes. As are certain threads. |

It's a legitimate question that I don't recall having seen before.
As past threads on the word "frat" have shown, this is a matter of personal preference. I don't like the word used in any manner -- but a lot of people aren't bothered by it at all. I have always used "fraternity" to describe a group, a house, a man (or woman since most sororities actually consider themselves fraternities), a party or whatever the word is used with. I'm really not crazy about the word "fratty." But, that's only my opinion. |
"Frat" as a noun, verb, or adjective is trashy and vulgar. Don't use it unless you want to sound uneducated and low class.

"Frat" doesn't bother me at all.

Thats because you're frat-tastic |

In the NPHC world the term frat is perfectly acceptable and is commonly used.

But isn't that really only used between brothers?? A Kappa wouldn't use "frat" for an Alpha, right? |
Quote:
You are right ladygreek, but I didn't want to confuse the OP as she's not talking about NPHC groups. And I really didn't want her to walk up to an Alpha or Kappa and say "Hey frat boy!" |

The guys say frat. The ladies say soror. |

To add to this, in the NPHC fraternity brothers also call each other 'Frater' as we in the sororities call each other Soror. |

I'm going to guess it is based in Latin to indicate 'brother' as Soror is 'sister' in Latin. Other than that, I really can't tell you why they use Frater because I really don't know each org's specific reason. :o :) |
Thanks. I'm just interested in the difference. I know that we say sister and you say soror and it means the same thing to each of us but I wasn't sure why. At least you've confirmed a bit of that :)
|
You wouldn't call your country a c*nt, therefore you would never call your fraternity a frat.
|
That logic is faulty... i know the point you're making... but it would be calling your country a "count" which we all know is either a verb or an aristocratic title. Not necessarily a bad thing ;)

Either way, and the point that ladygreek was making, "frat" and "frats" don't hold a negative connotation in the NPHC. |
It's not universal in the NIC/IFC. On our campus most guys didn't care, though only one pulled the "Country/Fraternity" line  They mostly used the term themselves considering nothing more than an abbreviation in every day usage.

Anyway, I don't really see what the big deal is with "frat", but I try not to say it because you never know who it is a big deal to. |

There is a big difference between "frats" and Fraters as has been pointed out.
Frat are for boys, and Fraternity is for Men. Just think if You are a female/male what do You want to be called?;) If people do not like it, then dont use it! |

Female.. but only if you pronounce it Fey-ma-lé

Because, I do not know Your name. I dont think Your aka is a name, but, I dont want people to know me or who I am.;) |

ETA: The reason Sheila didn't want it to seem OK to her is because if she's going through NPC rush at UFC, saying "frat" during rush can and probably will get her dropped from that house. |

So, maybe there unto it self lies the problem?

:D
You all are comical and PM Mama's posts always make me chuckle for some reason. In a good way. I hope the OP got his/her question answered--from more than one perspective. |

Of course, it's also faulty because however offended some may be by "frat," it's not an obscenity, unlike what "you wouldn't call your country . . ." If I could, I would declare a ban on this supposed analagy. [/soapbox] |
No, thank you!
The concept is dumb especially when many guys are ok with the term frat. Generally, I don't use it, but if the guys use it, why not? |
