Dress me!
They're filming a baseball movie here and tomorrow (Friday, June 23) I'm going to take my son and go be an extra in some crowd scenes. The movie's set in 1990-1991, so we're supposed to come dressed for that time period, with a few extra changes of clothes so Wardrobe can decide what will work best.
I was only in 6th grade at that time, and still wearing whatever my mom bought me, so I wasn't reall in fashion at that time. I have a vague recollection of mall bangs and tight-rolled jeans but need more ideas. I was planning on hitting up Goodwill tonight to see if I couldn't find some appropriate pieces. Thank God my son is only 3.5 months old and can get by with just a onesie. So, give me suggestions of things to look for and wear tomorrow. Pictures would also be appreciated (come on, KR, I know you love to bust those out!) |
Here's a pic from 1990 that is probably pretty representative:
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/lpiintern/al...nterns1990.jpg It's kinda small, but I'm digging the second woman from the right's pants.:p Buuuuut, if you can't find something as totally awesome as that, the LIGHT or WHITISH jeans that the guy in the black & yellow plaid and the guy above him are a good alternative. |
You should definitely wear a t-shirt with either Boys 2 Men or C & C Music Factory.
|
Some light colored jeans that taper. I can't say I pegged them still by 91, but I don't quite remember.
An Express sweatshirt with the big EXP letters across it - sort of like our Greek letter sweatshirts. http://i4.ebayimg.com/04/i/06/f8/7a/a8_1.JPG Harem pants were big - generally a colorfull pattern in cotton/rayon, elastic waistband, tapered leg. I had a kick-ass pair of purple ones that had flaps on the sides that criss-crossed the front and buttoned on the other side. Z. Cavariccis or Girbaud jeans, right? I wish I could ship you my yearbooks...:D Oh! And get a fanny pack!!!! |
Hypercolor shirts if you can find them. : )
Denim shortalls. Slap bracelets were a big accessory. Teal was a hot color back then. Grunge was just starting to come into fashion in 1991. The Bulls won their first championship in 1991 and Bulls gear was popular all over the place...stuff with Michael Jordan especially. |
You've already gotten some great suggestions.
I would stay away from wearing large logos. While that Express sweatshirt brings back memories, the logo is rather large. Usually with movies and tv they try to stay away from logos like that because they end up dealing with trademark issues. Denim shortalls and a brighly colored t-shirt would rock. What about the old reebok hightops that came in all of those crazy colors? http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/1404/reebok.jpg |
watch Full House.

I'm thinking I'll try and find some scrunchies or banana clip, too... |
As far as hair, the mall bangs were popular. So were spiral curls (think Mariah Carey, early in her career.)
I graduated high school in 1991. :) When I get home I will look at my yearbook to see if I can think of anything else! |
If you're supposed to be a mom holding her baby in the background, maybe wear a floral dress instead.

Whew! Just makin' sure I haven't been singing it wrong all these years....talk about a song headache! |
What about watching a couple of old episodes of "90210" - the Brenda years are on right now on Soap Net - those were early 90s.
|
If it wasn't for a b-ball game, I would say the blouses with sheer sleeves or cut out shoulders. Yipes.
But yes - rolled jeans, Tretorns and a big terrycloth sweatshirt should work. |
I would definitely go with the rolled up jeans (preferably stone washed), high top gym shoe's, and a baggy t-shirt that you can either tie in a knot or fold it into something like the girl in the back with the purple shirt has. I forgot what those plastic things are called.
http://www.encoreencore.org/2001/ima...hellTawny.jpeg I know this is more of 80's wear, but I just wanted to get the idea of the plastic holder in the knotted shirt. Also, you could always go with bib overalls...those were popular in the 90's. |

I say go with the scrunchies, and I think colored or patterned ones would be best. Weren't leggings still big back then? |

I got two solid-color polos and one solid-color t-shirt, a jean skirt and a pair of light, pleated-front tie-waist shorts at Goodwill, we'll see what they think of those. |

Perfect for a Mom of the 90's!!! :) |
I ended up wearing a jean skirt and polo with t-shirt underneath. It was unGodly hot, but it worked. They really weren't as concerned with the specifics of the outfit as the overall look. And if someone had something on that obviously wasn't from the 90s they just made them turn it around, turn it inside out or wear one of the radio station t-shirts they were giving away.
It was a looong day (7:00 am - 8:00 pm) and I didn't win anything (they were having drawings of memorabilia, t-shirts and even two ipod nanos for the extras) but it was really interesting to see how scenes and shots are set up and to learn more about the movie industry. And most of the people there were really cool and down-to-earth. I could go back today if I wanted, but I think I've had enough of being a star. :) |
