Oh, I hear that ALL the time...

What are some things that people say about you or ask you a lot?

For example, I hear that I don't sound like I'm from a certain city because I don't have an accent every time I tell someone what my hometown is.

FeeFee 06-20-2006 04:30 PM

"You look so much younger"
:D :p :p

mulattogyrl 06-20-2006 04:32 PM

I always hear "What nationality are you? I thought you were Dominican."

People also think I'm younger than I am when they see me.

tunatartare 06-20-2006 04:34 PM

FeeFee and mulattogyrl, I'm sure so many women out there feel so sorry for you. :p
Whenever I tell people that I was born in Russia, they always ask me why I don't have an accent.

orighu 06-20-2006 04:34 PM

I hear "they have Blk folk in Denver?" - when I tell people I'm from Denver Colorado

mulattogyrl 06-20-2006 04:38 PM

LOL! My uncle lives in Denver.

black_princess 06-20-2006 04:53 PM

I always used to hear . . your sooo tall . . I bet you play basketball

I also used to hear a lot of comments about me being ugly because I was "dark-skinned" (that was more so in my private middle school years when the majority of the girls there were fair skinned and/or had long hair and the boys really bought into the light and wavy ideal)

Today . . I've come to terms with both my height and my complexion. Now I get complements from the men-folk on both :D :p

dcart 06-20-2006 05:02 PM

Generic

Oh my God..you look just like my ...(cousin,aunt,niece) pretty much any female family member they can think of...Gets annoying after a while though..:(

Oh and the famous...I didn't know you were from SC...You don't sound like it...

RedefinedDiva 06-20-2006 05:05 PM

I used to be asked ALL THE TIME if I was from Jamaica or something. Seems as though my New Orleans accent sounds caribbean.... I never understood that...

When I told people that I was from New Orleans, I was often asked if I performed voodoo rituals, knew Master P or anyone from Cash Money, etc.

People always tell me that I am so sweet, quiet, humble, etc. They just don't know that RD can UNLEASH THE DRAGON when the time comes!

Ditto.

I get a lot of people calling me "sweetie" or "sweetheart" and asking what "grade" I'm in. It's annoying.

Ditto and ditto. EVERYONE thinks I'm Dominican and EVERYONE thinks I'm like 16 unless I'm with a group of other people my age. Lovehaiku, I feel you on the grade thing! They also ask if I have my driver's lisence yet. I know, I know, I'll appreciate it when I'm 50, 'Black don't crack' and all that.

exquizit 06-20-2006 07:24 PM

all the time..

I hear:

"There's no WAY you're 30!"

"No, that's not your daughter! Looks like she should be your sister!"

SKEEphistAKAte 06-20-2006 07:58 PM

[QUOTE=PerfectVerse06]What are some things that people say about you or ask you a lot?[QUOTE]

Something people ask me alot:
"Ummm hi..ummm...my name is _________ and I am ummm you know, interested in AKA...are y'all having a line soon?"

People usually think I'm younger, depending on how I'm dressed. They say I don't look old enough to be my daugher's mother.

People say I look mean (because I don't go around smiling all of the time).

If I'm out of state people ask the following questions when they find out I'm from Florida:
Do you live on the beach?
Have you ever seen an alligator?
Have you ever been in a hurricane?

GRRRRRR me too. Seriously if I smiled all the time (not that it is possible), I would make people think I was insane. One guy in college (BUT HE WAS FINE!!!) used to tell me to smile more so I made a point to smile whenever I saw his fine tail. :D Not that I had a crush or nothing.

You have such a good memory! OMG, you remember everything!:)

Paradise359 06-20-2006 08:11 PM

Goooood One

In college: "You're from the Bahamas? I bet you guys go to the beach everyday huh?" Yep & no one is teaching in the schools or running the power plant or driving the buses or manning the hospitals:rolleyes:

When you gettin married? Whenever he asks damnit...now back up off me lol

You're _________? You look like you're 18!

Are you Dr. _______ daughter? You look just like you mummy/daddy ( I work in my father's dental office) Also wow you look JUST like your mother.

Is that you hair? (My weave is pretty hot lol)

Yall don't have any appointments until September???? lol (my personal favorite)

You are so stupid! (In a funny, ha ha way)

That's all for now

You get that too? But if you make me mad enough I'll get Gullah/Geeche in a heartbeat...:p

I also get the "Are you related to" or "Are you (insert relative here) child/niece/grandchild?" People also say that I'm younger than I look.

I used to get that from a bruh in college. :D Sometimes I get it at work too. And that's because I don't wanna be there and don't want to deal with the people I work with!

Rain Man 06-20-2006 09:42 PM

Mine have been:

"How old are you?" I have been hearing that a LOT recently. I always respond with "Guess." The consensus has been that I am at least 5-7 years younger than I really am. This has been giving me confidence that I need to get out more and start mackin'.

"Why aren't you married?" 'Cause I'm not done sowing my wild oats, miass!

I know I'll be back with more later on....

Senusret I 06-20-2006 10:45 PM

This actually happened to me a few weeks ago at the school where I work:

Stranger: Hey man, anybody ever tell you you look like Rockwell?

Rashid: [Thinking] Rockwell?????
http://eil.com/newgallery/Michael-Ja...hin-234995.jpg

Rockwell? The singer?

Stranger: Yeah!!!!

Rashid: [Still thinking] http://www.gocontinental.com/photos2/rockwell2a.jpg

Rockwell? Are you sure?? The one that sings "Somebody's Watching Me?" From the 80s???

Stranger: Yeah!!!

Rashid: WAIT. Do you mean MAXWELL???? http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/A...photos/max.jpg

Stranger: Ooooooooh yeah, THAT guy!!!! Yeah, that's who I meant. No offense, homie.

Rashid: I was finna SAY.

The moral of the story is that I can't win -- I'm either Eric Benet with locs or Maxwell with the afro. And I keep getting asked if I've ever heard either before.

ROFLMAO!!!

If I get asked one more time "Why are YOU single?" I'm going to scream.

RedefinedDiva 06-21-2006 01:04 AM

Senusret, I am ROFLMAO!!! The whole time I was reading that, I was thinking "Who in the HAYYYYYYYYYYYYLE remembers what Rockwell looks like?" I mean, I know who the dude is (yes, I admit, I still sing AND listen to that song, but I digress), but I have NO recollection as to what he looks like (until you posted the picture). I would have WALKED to where you are and promptly given this stranger a beatdown for comparing someone to Rockwell.

That has made my week!!

StarFish106 06-21-2006 08:51 AM

Has anyone told you you favor or look just like MC Lyte? Got that my first day in college and that became my school nickname. 12 yrs later folks still call me that. Just got asked that in training last week! But I love Lyte so it's all good!

:D

Girl, people will sit there are argue with me for minutes because they don't think I'm from Charleston!!

They say, 'Well, you must've moved there or something.' and I tell them that I've got several generations of family that have lived there. But they still don't accept that.

How are you gonna fuss at me and tell me where I'm from? Even my boss from an old college job was telling me I couldn't possibly be from Charleston...while we were in the interview!

AlphaFrog 06-21-2006 09:03 AM

I was born & raised in Peoria, IL, but I always get asked if I'm from Wisconsin...apparently I have "that" accent. Although, I'm sure I sound pretty funny now that I've been in Carolina for a little while and "ya'll" gets mixed in with my accent!!

Proverbs31 06-21-2006 11:12 AM

People tell me that I look mean all the time too, lol. Oh well.

Also, my family and friends of the family ALWAYS tell me "You are a spittin' image of your Aunt Beola" who I never got to meet because she was murdered before I was born. :(

MeezDiscreet 06-21-2006 11:16 AM

EVERY one knows someone that i look JUST like. i almost caught a beatdown for it one time because this dude said i looked just like the chick who stole his money.

people always assume i'm mean because i don't smile either. but, since i am mean, it's not too far-fetched. lol

people tell me i look too young to be a teacher

before i chopped all my hair off, people used to ask me if i was wearing a wig

icebrAKA 06-21-2006 11:33 AM

"You not from here, where you from?"

"You know that voodoo, huh?"

"That's your child? Yall look like sisters." "Well how old are you?" "You're what?!"

People who are from the islands always want to know what island I'm from ("what island you from"?). They are always surprised when I tell them that I'm not from the islands. It's pretty funny b/c I've never had a non-islander stop me, only islanders themselves.

I have had a few people in random stores (e.g., Target) ask me if I was the woman who was an attorney on Girlfriends. I still don't know who they are talking about since I've only seen the show about 5 times (although I think it's a great show, I just don't watch T.V.).

People always say that I look younger than I am.

Older people often say that I'm sweet.

GoldenGlow2000 06-21-2006 02:11 PM

Is that your real hair? (Its to the middle of my back-When I 1st met my ex boyfriend's grandmother, she pulled my ponytail when I wasn't looking, to see if that was true!)
What are you mixed with? (75 percent black and about 25 percent chinese)
How old are you? (I look younger than my age. Hey, I'm short and petite!)

_Opi_ 06-21-2006 02:25 PM

"you're ________(insert african country here)??? but you don't look and sound African". A little bit of an education goes a long way. Not everyone in Africa looks, walks and talks the same way, you know.

I recently went to this gathering with people from my country. Apparantly, they didnt know I was one of them too. According to one girl, my friend and I didn't sound like we were _______. This was new to me.

Mullatogyrl,

I got Dominican as well!

gamma_girl52 06-21-2006 02:25 PM

People say that I look mean too. Glad I'm not the only one! :p I just can't get with smiling ALL the time, nobody does that. I get tired of people tellin me to "smile, boo!!"

NO SUEDE, SHERLOCK! The reason is: I obviously have not found someone who is worthy of me committing to spend the rest of my life with, and I am not about to go into marriage half-stepping. Marriage is a committment not to be taken lightly. You of all people here should know that. Didn't you learn anything coming out of your marriage?

Good grief!
