BV Buzz 6/19---News on members of the Blue and White Family
News on Rodney will also be posted on the College Hill thread. I also may post story below on the Zetas' forum.
Laughing Matters 'Comic View' host Sheryl Underwood has a lot on her plate. Her Platinum Comedy Series Deluxe Edition DVD 'Too Much Information' is a hot seller; she wrecked Tom Joyner's Fantastic Voyage cruise with her standup routine; she's opening for Eddie Griffin at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas in August, and continues to be the national president for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In addition, Underwood has a sitcom in development. "I think the sitcom is going to work this time. I think I am really going to get it," she said beaming. I caught up with the Hollywood-based funny woman recently, and since its Black Music Month, I wanted her to talk about some of the more prominent personalities in urban music. Staying true to her DVD title, Underwood talked music and a whole lot more. One-Year Anniversary of Luther Vandross's Death: "I got a few men in my life right now that when a Luther record comes on, it makes me respect my love for them even more. He may not be here with us physically, but he'll always be here with us in spirit. Luther is the person that everyone has got to gage their ability in the music business up against. Luther got me some of the best sex I ever had, and I appreciate Luther. I ain't the prettiest woman in the world, but you throw a Luther record on and everybody is fine!" Her Wedding: "I need Smokie Norful to sing at my wedding. But I got to get engaged first. I need someone to put that out there on the prayer line." Rumors about Whitney Houston: "What I know about Whitney is that it ain't over between her and Bobby Brown. She can rebound from this. She can make a comeback album and get herself together. If Janet Jackson can lose all that weight, then Whitney Houston can pull herself together and come on back in black music." On Meeting Bobby Brown: "I met Bobby but I was trying to get with his daddy, Pops. I'm trying to get in the family the old-school way. Bobby was having a good time on [Tom Joyner's] cruise. He was 'Being Bobby Brown,' which is the title of his show, but he wasn't doing anything that any other married man on the boat wasn't doing. He was sowing a little bit of his wild oats, but still remembering that he got a crazy ass wife named Whitney Houston. Hell to the naw! Whitney the type of b-h who would have come up on the boat and whipped a n-a." Her New Music Industry Crushes: "I heard that T.I. done broke up with the girl [from Xscape] so I am trying to get a little T.I. action. I can't go no younger than that. I was looking at Chris Brown, and then someone said I was a little too old for that. Who you think I should sleep with? Feel free to hook a sister up." Kirk Franklin's Porn Addiction: "Let me tell you something, I sat with Kirk Franklin and I told him don't you ever go on Oprah Winfrey's show confessing to nothing! You can tell who Oprah like and don't like. She did not respect the confession that Kirk was trying to make. And why not be addicted to porn? Aren't there worse things to be addicted to? Some people are addicted to things that will kill you. Porn ain't never killed nobody! Kirk wants off porn? I am going to make some porn that's going to stop Kirk's addiction to porn. He's going be like, 'In the name of Jesus, I quit!'" Real Love? Is it a reality romance? Apparently so! 'College Hill's' resident playboy, Rodney Henry, has apparently given up his player card and fallen for 'America's Next Top Model' season two contestant Camille McDonald. Henry apparently met the reality show diva at a New York City party and they have been dating ever since. "She's definitely a special friend, I enjoy her company," Henry confessed to BV Buzz. Henry, who has one more semester at Virginia State University, where he's studying Mass Communications, is spending his summer in New York City with McDonald now that his spring semester and season on 'College Hill' have both wrapped. A source spotted the pair canoodling at a Harlem party for Henry's fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma. Though Henry was mum when we asked, I hear the couple is also developing a reality television show together. Let's just hope it's not an urban version of 'Newlyweds,' because we see what that did for Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey. Soul Man For former Ray Charles guitarist Kevin Turner, seeing Jamie Foxx play Charles in the film adaptation of his life was like reliving parts of his own life over again. Turner played with Charles' band back in 1984, while he was still a college student. "It was incredible," he said. But after six months of traveling in Charles' private plane, he decided to return to school. "It was a four-prop, and I don't necessarily like planes. It was enough for me being on that four-prop going around in circles trying to get over those mountains in Las Vegas," he said laughing. Turner said that the best lesson he learned from Charles was to play from your soul. "He was all about playing with feeling. Jazz musicians can sometimes get real technical. When I first got the gig I was always around a lot of people, and I would want to impress them so I'd be playing my jazz chops. He'd be like, 'Naw, naw, naw!' Then I finally got it! I started playing real bluesy and soulful, and he loved it," Turner recalled. Now Turner is an accomplished musician in his own right, who tours regularly with saxophonist Kirk Whalum, and has two jazz CDs of his own. The most recent, 'Him,' is a collection of hymns including "Walk With Me, Lord," "Blessed Assurance" and "Amazing Grace." Last week, Turner recorded the songs from 'Him' live for DVD in Champaign, Ill. at the Parkland College Theatre. Turner was backed by an all-star lineup of musicians including Whalum, Ralph Lofton (Whitney Houston), Mike Logan (George Duke), Chuck Webb (David Sanborn) and Reggie Jackson (Truth Hurts) and his wife's ensemble, Cynthia Turner & Heartspeak. The recording will be available on DVD this fall. Buzzworthy Former Xscape singer Kandi Burruss had her home in Fayetteville, Ga. burglarized recently. The criminals stole a television, computer monitor, drum machine and her numerous gold and platinum records. Burruss told BV Buzz that she believes whoever robbed her home had likely been in it before. While she's saddened by the loss of her items, her main concern is retrieving the numerous plaques she earned from singing with Xscape, soundtrack appearances and writing and producing for artists such Destiny's Child and TLC. "I really want those plaques back," Burruss told the Buzz. If you or anyone you know has the plaques and want to return them, no questions asked, call 678-687-8299 for instructions on how to collect a monetary reward. They can also be mailed to P.O. Box 491239, College Park, GA 30349. Look for Rockmond Dunbar ('Prison Break') and Keith Hamilton Cobb ('The Young and the Restless') to guest star on the upcoming season of Logo's 'Noah's Arc.' It was already announced that former B2K singer Raz B would appear on a forthcoming episode of the gay-themed comedy, and hoops star turned TV host John Salley ('Best Damn Sports Show Period') appeared on a recent episode of the show as well. 'King of Comedy' Cedric The Entertainer and Shani Pride ('Love Don't Cost A Thing') will star in and produce the film 'Grand Larceny,' which is slated to begin production this fall. "'Grand Larceny' is a comedy about two down-on-their-luck slackers who decide to pull a heist on their local coffee shop," said Pride. Scott Veach has been tapped to direct. Sounds like R&B singer Mario is becoming a stud. According to a source, the Baltimore-bred crooner has been quietly singing "Let Me Love You" to video model turned Playboy cover girl Vida Guerra. Guerra was romantically linked to Latin pop singer Frankie J. If Guerra wasn't enough woman for Mario to handle, there's a rumor circulating that Mario has also been quietly creepin' with Nick Cannon's alleged boo, Rihanna. Frankly Speaking "Its nice to be a part of something successful after surviving 'Pootie Tang.' People always ask: 'Will there be a remake of 'Pootie Tang?' What do they want us to do, go back and fix the s-t?" - Comedienne Wanda Sykes on having success with 'Monster in Law' and 'Over the Hedge.' Can't Say Names… Is there trouble in paradise for a not-so-public industry pair? Sources say a certain musical duo could have hit a sour note in their relationship. I'm told the two never uttered a word to each other at a recent New York City party. Instructions were given to the party planners to keep them as far away from each other as possible. Could one of them have "cheated?" Or was it just a minor lovers' squabble? We'll all have to stay tuned to see. They had Jayonce, Ashanti and Nelly, Chante Moore and Kenny Lattimore, and Lil' Mo and Raheem DeVaughn but it most likely is.... Keyshia Cole & Young Jeezy (yuck!) BV Scene Janet Jackson, Jermaine Dupri and Mariah Carey dined at Cafeteria restaurant in New York City following Island Def Jam C.E.O. L.A. Reid's 50th birthday celebration… Tichina Arnold ('Everybody Hates Chris'), Joy Bryant ('Get Rich or Die Tryin''), Justin Guarini ('American Idol'), Simon Rex ('Scary Movie') and late-night host Carson Daly at Tao Nightclub in The Venetian in Las Vegas for the BurnLounge.com launch party… That was Sticky Fingaz of Onyx who was laughing it up with rock icon Joan Jett at Plum nightclub in New York City. The rapper came to check out Jett's Big Apple performance to celebrate the release of her new album 'Sinner.'… The Ying Yang Twins were spotted going through the American Airlines security line at Miami International Airport… Promoting his new album 'My World,' controversial NBA player Ron Artest (Sacramento Kings) performed during Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s celebrity weekend in Chicago. The concert also featured Young Jeezy, Styles P and Tony Yayo. Comic Rickey Smiley and actress Gabrielle Union also participated in the weekend… Rapper Nelly celebrated the launch of his new swimwear collection of his Apple Bottoms clothing line at Hotel Victor in Miami Beach along with pals Usher and Jermaine Dupri. |
Patty's 411 Celebrity Report 06/19/06
Patty Jackson's 411 for the week of June 19th, 2006
Hold off buying those wedding gifts for Michael Jackson! He is looking for wife number three, but he won’t be his nanny, Grace Rwaramba. Last week, there was a lot of speculation that Michael was planning to tie the knot with his children’s longtime nanny. When Michael gets in trouble he takes a wife. Right now, he is fighting for custody of his two oldest children. Michael’s ex-wife Debbie Rowe, the mother of Paris and Prince, is back in the picture. Years ago, she signed away her rights to her children for millions of dollars, and then Michael got into trouble for a second time facing child molestation charges. Debbie realized she wanted her children back, and a judge agreed. These kids are now seven and eight years old and they have no idea who Debbie Rowe is. Paris and Prince refer to their nanny as their mother. Nanny Grace has been in their lives since birth. Michael was looking to marry Nanny Grace. He wanted to prove to a judge that the children are being raised in a stable environment. Grace wanted the same thing, but she has not been truthful about her past. Grace Rwaramba is a 38-year old African native. Her nickname is “The Enforcer” because she keeps Michael under control. Sources say she is deeply religious, but she is not liked by the Jackson family. They feel she is a social-climbing golddigger. Things started to unravel for the nanny last week when it was revealed that she can’t marry Michael because she is already married. Apparently, Nanny Grace has been married for the past 11 years to an African American filmmaker. It was a marriage of convenience so Grace would be allowed to work in the United States. Michael also found out that Nanny Grace had been involved with his brothers Jermaine and Randy (What is with these two and sharing women? Years ago, Jermaine ran off with Randy’s baby momma). Michael needs a wife, but he can’t marry a woman who already has a husband, or a woman who has been involved with his brothers. Janet Jackson’s new song, Call On Me, with Rapper Nelly has been released to radio. Her new album, 20-Years Old, comes out in September. Expect a duet with Mariah Carey on the new album. Bobby Brown can’t stop cheating on his wife Whitney Houston. Yes, they are separated, but they are still legally married. Bobby, 37, has been carrying on with a 24-year old contestant from America’s Next Top Model. Tiffany Richardson is enjoying her time in the spotlight as the mistress of Bobby Brown, proclaiming it’s cool because Whitney is not here. How is Bobby going to explain this? His lies are catching up to him. In the meantime, Hollywood is reaching out to help Whitney. Denzel Washington and Mel Gibson have reached out to help. Whitney is in Los Angeles. According to long time friend, Singer Cherelle, Whitney has started detox, and is determined to clean up her life. Now speaking of Whitney, cheating and open marriages, check out the July issue of Essence magazine. Singer Jill Scott interviews Actress/Comedian Mo’nique. Mo’nique talks about her marriage, and she has some encouraging words for Whitney. Last month, Mo’nique married her childhood buddy Sidney Hicks. He is the father of her twins. Mo’nique talks about cheating, and she says it’s cheating when you lie and keep secrets. She says she and her husband are honest with each other. I thought “cheating” was sex outside of your marriage or exclusive relationship. What is Mo’nique saying? Is she having an open marriage with her husband? Essence magazine loves Mo’nique. She has graced the cover 3 times in the past 15 months. Is it too much Mo’nique? According to the editors, no because they feel Mo’nique is the perfect fit with her spirit, energy and confidence. They say readers respond to her realness. When you read the article, let me know what you think. Get well wishes go out to Singer Isaac Hayes. He had to cancel his summer tour because of a heart ailment. He has been sick most of the year. We also send out get well wishes to Rudy Ray Moore, a.k.a. “Dolemite.” Moore was the king of the party records in the 60’s and 70’s. The 80-year old Moore is suffering from an undisclosed illness at a California hospital. He is in intensive care and in good spirits. I hear Singer D’Angelo has fallen on hard times. Last year, he was involved in a serious car accident. He hasn’t toured or released an album in years. With no income coming in, he could lose everything. Former American Idol Winner Ruben Studdard sued his former manager Ron Edwards and won. A judge ruled that Edwards took advantage of Studdard when he stole money and credit cards from him. Studdard was awarded $2 million in his lawsuit. In a statement, Studdard declared it was nice to see justice at work, but he is still hurt because he had known Edwards since he was a child and trusted him. Mary Wilson had a big court victory last week. The Mary Wilson Law went into effect protecting original artists from copycat performers. Copycat performers, whether they are using an artists name, songs or personas, must now proclaim they are doing it as a tribute. For years, the public has been fooled by impersonators going on stage as the original performers. Lionel Richie wants his daughter Nicole to gain weight. He is reportedly offering Nicole and her friends a trip to the Caribbean if she gains weight. He feels she is being influenced by her friends. Is there life after Divorce Court? For Judge Mablean Ephriam there is. Judge Mablean will no longer appear on Divorce Court. She decided to leave the show after a contract dispute. Producers were also hassling her about her hair, and now she can wear her hair anyway she wants to. According to Judge Mablean, the sky is the limit. She says she would like to write a book and also try her hand at acting, maybe a movie or a stage play. She has also started a foundation to help guide young fathers. Usher is back with his former stylist. Last year, Usher caught a lot of flak when it was revealed he was dating his former stylist who was married with three kids. Well, Stylist Tameka Foster has divorced her husband and she is free to be with Usher, who is ten years younger than she is. Actress Keke Palmer (Akeelah and the Bee, Madea’s Family Reunion) has just signed on for the Disney movie Jump. She also has a new album coming out on Atlantic Records. The 15 minutes of fame are not over for Hoopz. Hoopz is the infamous winner of the VH-1 reality show Flavor of Love. She won Flavor Flav’s heart, and dumped him shortly thereafter. Hoopz, a.k.a. Nikki Alexander, has been making a name for herself running through the rappers and the ladies. Hoopz ran into trouble with the Michigan Police last week, and she was arrested after fighting with the cops. She claims she was being harassed by her neighbors then she was attacked by the cops. I’m Rick James is a new documentary coming out this fall based on the life of the wild entertainer. The full length feature film was put together by his daughter Ty, and it covers Rick’s career from his days as a struggling musician in Buffalo to a world class entertainer. Tyra Banks is fast on her way to becoming the Oprah Winfrey of the younger set. The 32-year old former supermodel has two hit shows under her belt, America’s Next Top Model and The Tyra Banks (talk) Show. Tyra owns a part of both shows, and last year she made $18 million. Tyra is on a roll with her TV shows and her rumored romance with Tyler Perry. She says they’re just friends. Hmmmmmmmm! Get ready for The Luther Vandross Collection. It’s a 16 song collection featuring 2 new songs, Shine and Got You Home. The album will coincide with the one year anniversary of his death. Look for it in August. Check out these upcoming DVD releases Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail-June 27th. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion, the movie-June 27th. Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married, with Kelly Price-June 27th. Akeelah and The Bee- Laurence Fishburne, Keke Palmer, Angela Bassett – August 29th. WHAT’S THE UNDERGROUND BUZZ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This Veteran Soul Singer is very angry about his career. Back in the late 70’s, he topped the charts with numerous soul ballads. In the 80’s and 90’s, he had numerous crossover hits, but he never achieved the success he thought he was due. This Singer made money, but not the millions that are being paid to today’s top artists. This Veteran has had his share of hard times. He feels it’s unfair because he can really sing, whereas today’s top entertainers are created in a studio. The Veteran Singer is letting his anger consume him. In concerts, he stops his show to curse the other artists who he feels are not as talented as him. This Singer is working non stop to get out of debt because he never got the millions he was due. He has no idea he is turning a lot of his fans off with his bizarre behavior. The BET Awards air Tuesday night, June 27th with Host Damon Wayans. Nominees include Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Jamie Foxx, Denzel Washington, Terrence Howard, Queen Latifah and Alfre Woodard. Chaka Khan will be getting the Lifetime Achievement Award. Beyonce and Jay-Z will be the opening the show, and Prince will be closing. Mary Mary, Mary J. Blige, Jamie Foxx, and Rapper T.I. are also scheduled to perform. |

Mary to be on "One Life To Live" (AP)
NEW YORK - Though she famously sang about wanting 'No More Drama' in her own life, Mary J. Blige is about to be transplanted into a world of crime, scheming, back-stabbing and scandal. She’s taping an appearance on ABC's 'One Life to Live.'
The 35-year-old R&B diva, whose latest album, 'The Breakthrough,' has sold more than two million copies, will perform two hits from that disc at the club Capricorn in the town of Llanview. The episode is set to air July 28. “The cast and I, being huge fans of Mary J. Blige’s tremendous talent, are thrilled that she will be appearing on ‘OLTL,”’ said executive producer Frank Valenti in a recent statement. Erykah Badu and Chris Botti have also performed on the show. |
*Beyonce was in Los Angeles over the weekend choosing the members of her all-female touring band as rumors of a possible split with boyfriend Jay-Z began surfacing on the Internet.
After simultaneous nationwide auditions were held in four different cities, Beyonce and her dad/manager Mathew Knowles made their final selections at Sony Studios Saturday. The pair helped to select the nine lucky women who will perform with the singer to promote the Sept. 5 release of her new album, “B-Day.” "I wanted to get together a group of fierce, talented, hungry, beautiful women and form an all-girl band," she told MTV after the band was picked. "I'm all about female empowerment. I'm all about pushing the envelope. I know it's my responsibility to do something different. I said, 'I want a band, I want something different.' I had worldwide auditions; people flew in from Atlanta, Houston, Israel, all over the world.” Beyonce said she will announce the name of her band at a later date. For now, the former Destiny’s Child leader is looking forward to gelling with the band after the grueling audition process. "It was extremely difficult," she said about choosing the winners. "[There are] so many talented women. I wanted only a nine-piece band, but the girls were so amazing, I couldn't decide. I think I'm going to wind up having 12 people so I have two [people playing] certain instruments, because [some of the contenders] were just brilliant. It's a thing called star quality, it's a thing you can't put your finger on, can't describe. When they were playing, I said, 'I want to see y'all battle.' I brought in two of every instrument and that's how I chose. You see the one that really wants it. It was so entertaining, the energy, seeing the girls battle ... God, it was the best. It was magical." One of the songs the ladies had to know was “Déjà Vu,” the Rodney Jerkins-produced first single currently heating up radio airwaves. “When I recorded ‘Déjà Vu’ ... I knew that even before I started working on my album, I wanted to add live instruments to all of my songs," she explained. "It's such a balance [of music on the song], it has live congas, live horns, live bass. It's still young, still new and fresh, but it has the old soul groove. The energy is incredible. It's the summer anthem, I pray. I feel it. It's already broken records. Rodney Jerkins is incredible, Jay of course is on it, he blessed the song, I'm happy with it." Speaking of Jay, a blog is claiming that he and Beyonce are very close to splitting up. “She wants a man, who supports her, loves her, [to] stand by her side”, a source told SocialRank. “B is sick of him possessively trying to keep things private. She doesn’t feel enough affection or love from him.” Word is she’s upset over coming in last to his work at Island Def Jam and his obligations to the New Jersey Nets, the NBA team he co-owns. “Jay is obsessed with keeping basketball game scores” another “close source” tells SocialRank. “Beyonce is looking to the future. Her sister Solange already has a baby. Her own parents have an amazing, fulfilling relationship and she not only wants a steady career, she wants to have a tight family circle around her as well.” Since blogs are the new tabloids, only time will tell if this holds any water. |
People are hating and trying to think of ways to break Jayonce up because they are not "out there" like Britney/Kevin, Jessica/Nick, TomKat, etc. This may be wrong...since they got the "Rianna trying to get Jigga" story wrong.
Sidenote: In advance I would like to appoligze to Soror Gina. I was listening to the same radio station that was tripping off of Nelly and Ashanti and why did the DJ say that Jigga looked like Bullwinkle the Moose (from Rocky and Bullwinkle). I almost wrecked my car when he said that! |

Member of Kool and the Gang dies (AP)
Los Angeles (AP) -- Claydes Charles Smith, a co-founder and lead guitarist of the group Kool & the Gang, has died. He was 57.
Smith died in Maplewood, N.J., on Tuesday after a long illness, publicist David Brokaw said Thursday. Brokaw did not know the cause of death. "We've lost a member of our family, as well as an infinitely creative and gifted artist who was with the band from the very beginning," band manager Tia Sinclair said in a statement. Kool & the Gang grew from jazz roots in the 1960s to become one of the major groups of the 1970s, blending jazz, funk, R&B and pop. After a downturn, the group enjoyed a return to stardom in the '80s. Smith, who was known as Charles Smith, wrote the hits "Joanna" and "Take My Heart," and was a co-writer of others, including "Celebration,""Hollywood Swinging" and "Jungle Boogie." Born on Sept. 6, 1948, in Jersey City, N.J., he was introduce to jazz guitar by his father in the early 1960s. Later in that decade he was in a group of New Jersey jazz musicians, including Ronald Bell (later Khalis Bayyan), Robert "Kool" Bell, George Brown, Dennis Thomas and Robert "Spike" Mickens, who became Kool & the Gang. Other members would include lead singer James "JT" Taylor. Illness forced Smith to stop touring with the group in January. Smith is survived by his six children, Claydes A. Smith, Justin Smith, Aaron Corbin, August Williams, Uranus Guray and Tyteen Humes, and nine grandchildren. |

Gina, pack your bags! Jigga's going on a world tour! (AP)
NEW YORK (June 26) - As a white-tuxed Jay-Z stood on stage at Radio City Music Hall, celebrating the 10th anniversary of his debut album "Reasonable Doubt" and planning a world tour, it seemed as if a wide chasm separated the hungry rapper who made that dazzling debut and the mogul on the mic.
The Jay-Z of ten years ago was virtually unknown - the hottest Brooklyn rapper back then was The Notorious B.I.G. , and Jay-Z wasn't even signed to a major label when his first record came out. Now, Jay-Z - also known as Shawn Carter, the president of Def Jam Records - is one of the most successful, respected figures in rap history. But lest anyone think the rap icon is getting comfortable as a nostalgia act, Jay-Z quickly corrected them on stage Sunday night. Launching into a blistering, mostly unprintable freestyle, he affirmed that even semi-retired, Jay-Z is still the most captivating figure in rap today. "I am the nicest!" Jay-Z declared, as the sold-out crowd inside the legendary venue stood on their feet, demanding more. Fans will soon get it. In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday between rehearsals for Sunday night's commemorative show, Jay-Z announced that he would be going on tour this fall in a jaunt around the globe - Seoul, Beirut, Dubai, Johannesburg and Sydney, to name a few stops. "There's a lot of places I haven't been," explained Jay-Z. "They've heard my music but they've never really seen me perform live. ... This really makes me wanna go out and perform. I'm looking forward to going overseas." While fans stateside won't likely see another Jay-Z performance for a while, they may get a chance to her some new music in the future. Though Jay-Z vowed 2003's "The Black Album" would be his goodbye to the recorded rap game, his recent concert appearances (he staged a major show last year and has made cameos with performers like The Roots ) and his guest appearances on tracks like girlfriend Beyonce 's new song have industry insiders rumbling that a new Hova album may be on the horizon. Jay-Z won't rule out cutting short his so-called "retirement." "I go back and forth with it" he told AP. "I believe the industry as a whole needs certain events to happen to sustain it and keep it alive. You need (Dr.) Dre albums, you need Eminem albums you need 50 (Cent) albums, you need big artists, you need major events that happen. ... So when I look at it in those terms, I believe that an album is needed." But he added that he viewed his role as president of Def Jam as equally important - not only to help change the system, but to give rappers something more to aspire to after their hits wane: "You have a three-year run and then no one ever hears about you. ... But now there's something attainable." Not that Jay-Z ever needed to worry about falling into the "Where Are They Now" category. As his concert proved, Jay-Z has become not only one of hip-hop's, but pop music's evergreen performers, still managing to look and sound fresh ten years down the road. And few rappers would be able to pull off rhyming about hustling crack on the corners of Brooklyn while standing behind a full orchestra, a band and DJ while dressed in cocktail party attire. But somehow, Jay-Z pulled it off. Longtime sidekick Memphis Bleek was on hand for "Coming of Age," while Foxy Brown sashayed on stage for the song that made her a star, "Ain't No ..." The two biggest cameos featured on "Reasonable Doubt" back then weren't around for the anniversary party: a video montage of the slain Notorious B.I.G played on the video screen as Jay-Z rapped both his and Biggie's versus on "Brooklyn's Finest." And while Mary J. Blige provided the hook on "Can't Knock The Hustle" back then, her gritty performance was replaced Sunday night by the honey vocals of his boo, Beyonce. But while "Reasonable Doubt" may be one of Jay-Z's greatest albums - he called it not only his favorite but "my baby" - it wasn't his most commercially successful. So as an added bonus and perhaps to placate the fans who arrived late on the Jay-Z Express, he returned after a brief intermission to run through some of his more famous hits -"Big Pimpin," "What More Can I Say," "Give It To Me" - at times teasing the crowd with a snippet of a hit, as if he had so many there was barely time to perform them all. But he also threw in some obscure, gritty Hova songs, if only to prove that the essence of the grimy Brooklyn hustler still remains. "I never lost sense of who I was - not for a day, not before I had a record deal, and certainly not after," he told AP. "I believe that's why I'm sitting right here with you today - it didn't change it one bit." |
More on the Reasonable Doubt concert (BV)
Jay Z’s ‘Reasonable Doubt’ Radio City Music Hall Concert
Jay Z’s ‘Reasonable Doubt’ concert at Radio City Music Hall Sunday Night was an unforgettable 10-year anniversary tribute to the artist’s debut album. The Rockefeller Records’ CEO made his grand entrance on stage, and kicked off the ‘Reasonable Doubt’ concert in a 1996 Lexus, then stepped out on stage in a crisp white suit to perform his 10-year-old album, back-to-front. Guest performers included many of the original artists who appeared on ‘Reasonable Doubt’ 10 years ago – Sauce Money, Memphis Bleek, Foxy Brown – and a special appearance by Beyoncé singing Mary J. Blige’s vocals in ‘Can’t Knock the Hustle’ -- turned the venue upside down. Jay Z and ?uestlove, music director for the performance, made sure that fans got more than they bargained for. |
The Game to marry Congressman's daughter (bv)
THIS. DON'T. SOUND. RIGHT. AT. ALL.
The Game has formally announced his engagement to Valeisha Butterfield, daughter of U.S. Congressman G.K. Butterfield (D-NC.). Valeisha Butterfield admitted in a recent interview that the engagement came as a shock, stating that the two never dated, instead they went from “being friends to being engaged.” This good news comes after ‘Waist Deep,’ the new feature film starring The Game, received mediocre reviews. Valeisha Butterfield appeared in ‘Remember the Titans’ as a cheerleader and also as a college student in ‘Road Trip.’ The couple recently had an extravagant dinner party formally announcing their engagement, with guests from Lil Jon to Hillary Duff. And though Congressman Butterfield gave The Game the “third degree,” the couple plans to wed in March 2007. |
I am seriously hating on the fact that I could not attend that concert. I saw pics on mtv.com. I knew the tour was coming. He talks about it in his HP commercial. BTW, I LOVE that commercial!! Maybe he will come to the Cuse as part of his world tour. :D

BV Buzz 6/25--News on Nick Cannon
It was a party with a purpose thrown by Boost Mobile RockCorps in Atlanta June 16. Boost Mobile RockCorps is an organization that encourages youth volunteerism and young people to make positive changes in their communities. The reward for the community initiatives are free tickets to Boost Mobile RockCorps's all-star concert.
Renaissance man Nick Cannon hosted this year's events. "I only give and do things that I truly really feel are close to my heart. Not just things that I feel are the right move. I've always been an advocate for the youth and youth empowerment, so for Boost Mobile to jump in and be like we're going to give this free concert and give all of this dough into giving back into the community for kids who give back to the community is amazing," Cannon told us backstage. Cannon, who also appears in Boost Mobile's BoostCall Tones advertising campaign, said he hopes his involvement will encourage other young people to get active in their community. "I always say that it's not about being a role model, it's about being a real model," he added. Keyshia Cole said she would have volunteered for Boost Mobile RockCorps if she hadn't hit the big time. "I would have done the community service for the tickets when I was a young because I couldn't afford to buy concert tickets," she explained. One of the community activities was a volunteer project at Atlanta New Century School on the Morris Brown College campus. Yours truly participated in cutting weeds and tree limbs on the school's soccer field along with 'TV One Access' host Jamal Munnerlyn. We were so out of our element that event coordinator Sheila Eldridge, of Miles Ahead Entertainment, joked about us doing the male answer to 'The Simple Life.' Afeni Shakur loves the message that Boost Mobile RockCorps sends to young people. "The work Boost Mobile RockCorps has done is a replica of what my son Tupac was about. He was all about giving back to the community," she said. The concert was held at The Fox Theatre and featured performances by Young Jeezy, Lil' Jon, Outkast's Big Boi featuring Sleepy Brown, Bubba Sparxxx and Janelle Monae, Keyshia Cole, Lil' Wayne, The Game, Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Young Dro and a surprise appearance by Jermaine Dupri. Hanging out backstage were original Destiny's Child member LaTavia Roberson, actor Jason Weaver ('ATL'), SWV member LeLee and director Chris Robinson ('ATL'). To learn more about Boost Mobile RockCorps and to find out how to get involved in your community, visit www.boostmobilerockcorps.org. Living Single Actor Wesley Jonathan ('Roll Bounce') said the rumor that he's engaged to actress Jennifer Freeman ('My Wife and Kids') is untrue. "I don't even know where that started," the actor told BV Buzz. "It's crazy how these things start. We're not even dating." Jonathan said he began getting calls and text messages either congratulating him or questioning the surprise announcement once it began circulating online. "I called Jennifer, and she was shocked like I was. We had to laugh about it," he added. The actor, who has three films on the horizon-'Crossover,' 'Cuttin' Da Mustard' and 'The Beautiful Ordinary'-is happily single for now. As far as Freeman is concerned, BV Buzz happens to know that she's been seeing a certain southern-based entertainer, who we're certain can't be too happy about the reports. Buzzworthy 'America's Next Top Model' cycle five finalist Nik Pace, 21, is dating Memphis Grizzlies forward Lawrence Roberts, 23. I spotted the pair dining with four other guys at The Cafe‚ restaurant inside the Westin Hotel in downtown Atlanta recently. After the group paid the bill, Pace, in cream tights, a black tank top, cream New York Yankees baseball cap and reading glasses, hugged Roberts from behind as the two left the restaurant and headed for the elevators. The couple has apparently been dating for nearly four months. Harlem-bred rapper Loon is readying the follow-up to his self-titled Bad Boy Entertainment debut and shared some choice words about his former label head, Sean "Diddy" Combs, in an interview streaming on his MySpace page. "I like running my mouth, I didn't get a chance to talk much, you know, when I was f-king with Puff. That ni**a like a life-sized f-king parrot. Everything you say he want to repeat and s-t. 'What Loon is trying to say...' N-a, I said what the f-k I was trying to say! N-as understood me when I said it the first time," he ranted. His forthcoming CD, appropriately titled 'No Friends,' also takes aim at his former running buddy, rapper-turned preacher-turned rapper again Mase (a.k.a. Pastor Mason Betha). Loon's sophomore CD will bow Aug. 29 on his own label, Boss Up Entertainment, in conjunction with X- Ray Records. You're nothing but a Mase wannabe anyway! With the film adaptation of 'Dreamgirls' being one of the most anticipated movies of the year, it's a given that the internet is abuzz with rumors about it. The last cyber report has R&B diva Jennifer Holliday, who originated the role of Effie White in the Broadway production of 'Dreamgirls,' playing the new Effie's (Jennifer Hudson of 'American Idol') mom in the film. The report went on to claim that Effie is killed in the film version of 'Dreamgirls' and that Holliday looks over her daughter's body and belts out the tune, 'And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going,' instead of Hudson singing it. I'm happy to report that story is definitely false. Under the condition of anonymity, someone associated with the film put it bluntly: "Hell naw! That's not true! That's ridiculous!" 'Dreamgirls,' which also stars Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Anika Noni Rose, Eddie Murphy and Keith Robinson, hits theaters Christmas Day. Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas has inked a deal to record a solo album with singer Akon's Konvict Records. This will be Thomas's first solo endeavor outside of her pop group TLC. Also on the Konvict roster is "I'm In Love With A Stripper" singer T-Pain. In other TLC news, I'm told Chilli and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins have a talk show in the works. The duo have apparently struck a deal with a major network to shoot a talk show pilot and may be introduced to the daytime television audience through a show that's already on the air. I really don't know about this... Gospel singer Kierra "Kiki" Sheard landed at No. 5 on Japan's International Album Sales Chart with her new sophomore release, 'This Is Me.' The anticipated follow-up to her debut, 'I Owe You,' hits stores in the U.S. this week. Sheard has become a superstar in Japan despite not having visited the country. Her remix album 'Just Until...' was certified gold in Japan and the track "Let Go" went to No. 1 on the Japanese radio charts. In addition to the standard album, Sheard will also release a special edition version of 'This Is Me' in the U.S. that will include five additional bonus cuts and a live version of the title track. Speaking of Sheard, her mom, gospel great Karen Clark Sheard of The Clark Sisters, was celebrated in Washington, D.C. recently by a production company called The Assiduous Group. The concert, held at the Warner Theater, was called 'An Evening With Karen Clark Sheard' and featured two of gospel's most prolific vocalists, Kim Burrell and Sheard's cousin J. Moss, who also presented his new group 21:03. Both artists sang Sheard songs in addition to their own material. Sheard herself closed out the show. Can't Say Names... Yes, that was a certain flashy, arrogant, allegedly former homophobic rapper who apparently mistook a Hollywood filmmaker who approached him on Los Angeles's gay-friendly Santa Monica Blvd. for a "gay fan." A source said that the rapper-producer sped off in a black Range Rover with a New Jersey license plate-likely a rental-when said filmmaker attempted to hand him his business card. "He hauled ass outta' there like a bat outta' hell," said our tipster. I think this is Ye... BV Scene Actress Jasmine Guy and daughter Imani having lunch with poet Pearl Cleage at Paschal's restaurant in Atlanta. Cleage authored the poem "We Speak Your Name" that was read during Oprah Winfrey's Legends Ball weekend. Former Xscape singer Kandi Burruss lunched with a male companion in the very next booth... It was almost a complete Destiny's Child reunion during Atlanta-based radio station Hot-107.9's Birthday Bash concert recently. While rapper Young Jeezy performed "Go Crazy" onstage with Island Def Jam president Jay-Z, Destiny's Child members Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland looked on from one side of the stage, while original D.C. member LeToya Luckett watched in the shadows from the other side of the stage at the Philips Arena... Media darling Gail Mitchell, the senior editor of R&B/Hip-Hop at Billboard magazine, was saluted at a special tribute at The Friars of Beverly Hills last week. The shindig was hosted by Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Bruce Walker and featured musical performances by Eric Benet and Desiree Coleman Jackson... Nate Berkus of the 'Oprah' show going into the ABC Carpet and Home on 19th Street in New York City. |

Star just announced on The View today that she is leaving the show - here is the article by the AP
Star Jones Reynolds leaving 'The View' By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer 30 minutes ago Don't expect any smackdown between Rosie O'Donnell and Star Jones Reynolds on "The View." Reynolds said Tuesday she was leaving the show. She told People magazine, "I feel like I was fired." Rumors that she was leaving have intensified since the April announcement that Rosie O'Donnell would be replacing Meredith Vieira on "The View" in the fall. O'Donnell had made several caustic remarks about Reynolds, saying that it was dishonest for her to talk about losing more than 100 pounds through diet and exercise without talking about gastric bypass surgery. Reynolds, one of the original cast members of Barbara Walters' daily chatfest, made the announcement after the first commercial break of "The View" on Tuesday, saying the show had decided to move in a new direction. "I'm not sure what the future holds," she said. "But I'm absolutely sure who holds the future." Her announcement came on the same day that Lloyd Grove's gossip column in the New York Daily News headlined: "Star gazing may end soon for `View'-ers," and repeated one of O'Donnell's quotes about Reynolds. Walters, after beckoning the studio audience to give Reynolds a standing ovation, indicated the timing was a surprise. She expressed her "sadness that it has turned out this way." "I can't imagine how `The View' would have succeeded without you," she said. Comic Joy Behar looked like she was shocked. "Who am I going to fight with?" Behar said. Reynolds replied: "Something tells me you will have somebody to fight with." |

This is what Star told People...
"What you don't know is that my contract was not renewed for the tenth season. I feel like I was fired." She adds that she was told her contract wouldn't be renewed just days before news leaked that O'Donnell would be joining The View. Whether Star got "fired" or saw the writing on the wall, can we offically say "The View'" is going to Hell in a handbasket? |

All I have to say is the View will not be the same without Star. She shut it down on that show!

Baba Wawa told this to AP...

Well I got to comment on this: The View will loose ALL of their black viewers and at least 1/4 of their white ones with Meredith and Star gone. They may gain some GLBT viewers with Rosie but it will not be enough. Better just well cancel this show NOW!!!! |
Now I wanna know why her contract was not renewed. Today on the View Walters said that she (Star) for months why her contract was not being renewed. They told her that they would go along with whatever she wanted to say. But now, they (View) can't sit there and pretend like everything is ok.
|
I am not the biggest Star Jones fan, but I just listened to the beginning of the View and I have a newfound respect in Star. Barbara Walters just called out Star in a very disrespectful and unnecessary way. For Star to have been a part of making the View what it is today, to say how "The View made Star a star..." and tell how she had been told months ago that she would not be asked to come back, but they were trying to let her leave with dignity and make up whatever story she wanted and ATTEMPT to find a new job...that was wrong, Barbara, really wrong.
|
Baba must have forgot that Star had HER OWN SHOW before The View and did all kinds of TV apperances before she had that job. And being that Star is one of the orginal members of the show, she deserved as much as a sendoff as they gave Meredith. And how much money ya'll want to bet that Star was told "don't say your contract wasn't renewed" until after she left the show. This whole situation is shady.
I bet you by this time next year, Star will have her own show while Joy, Elizabeth, Rosie and the two new girls will be looking for jobs because The View has been canceled. ETA: Their is also a thread on this in the Entertainment forum. And it's not pretty. |
