I just saw this on Ebay...they are saying it is an original badge from 1852...
Item number: 150039259352

tunatartare 09-27-2006 10:20 AM

Wow that's really cool. Hope that a Phi Mu or HQ gets it!

Philomathean Badge

It is the badge of the 4th Philomathean President.

Our national officers are working with the seller in an attempt to return it to our archives...

:)

Wow! That is stunning!

It most certainly belongs in your Archives so that hundreds of members can see and enjoy it.

I saw it this morning, I didn't want to post the link to "help raise" the price on it...but I did PM a Phi Mu about it.

I hope your HQ will be able to get it!

Just curious -- Does Phi Mu have an archives area at their Headquarters as well as the Canonball House in Macon?

National Museum

Phi Mu has a beautiful new office located in Peachtree City, Georgia.

It includes a wonderful display of all the Philomathean items that we cherish.

HEHE, you guys are ahead of me. I've been combing ebay to try to recover some of the origonal Otterbein badges, and I came across this historic badge (hence my stop over here). But you guys beat me to it! Hope this can be resolved, it is a rather beautiful badge and probably very important.

PhiMuGoddess 10-03-2006 12:05 AM

That's a beautiful badge - I see the HQ archive is the current high bidder, I hope they win!

ASUADPi 10-03-2006 12:11 AM

OMG that badge is absolutely amazing!!!!!!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Phi Mu HQ archives wins it!!!!!

BaylorBean 10-03-2006 09:23 AM

Amazing! How did they get a hold of such a historic badge?!

Good luck I hope you are able to save it so all your members can enjoy it!

I questioned the decision for them to bid 24 hrs. before the auction ends, but since the bidder ID is "archivephimu" at least it might reduce the number of members bidding. I'm sure the collectors will try to snipe at the last second.

I'm hoping the archive would have a high enough bid in that no one could get in at the last min, but I'm also rooting for PhiMu!

They better get their checkbook ready!

NutBrnHair 10-04-2006 02:24 AM

Oh my!

$4,350.00

I'm thrilled the archives got it -- I'm sorry they had to pay that much for it.

I know! I checked in on the last 10 min of the auction and watched it go from $790 to the final bid. I was worried because some other people were beeting the bids but was thrilled when Phi Mu sweeped in and got it in the last seconds!!! Very Exciting!

Way to go ladies! I'm glad you were able to get back such an important piece of your history!

Yes, it's a shame that they had to pay for their own property at all.:(

DominoTheta 10-04-2006 11:18 AM

I'm so very glad Phi Mu got it! What an amazing badge!

I heard that not long ago a Pi Beta Phi badge went for a pretty penny on Ebay.

I agree with AlphaFrog. It's awful that any organization would have to pay for something that belongs to them. Especially that much!

I wish there were a better way of securing the disposal of badges. I know the general policy is to have it returned to HQ or to be buried with it, but there's just too many slipping through the cracks and making it to these estate sales! *Amongst other reasons...*

I know it's just wishful thinking again, but it would be great if we could someday come up with a system to keep this from happening...or happening as often. Having badges on ebay every week is not right!

I believe that was an original I.C. Sororsis (sp?) badge.

Here! here!

I doubt any sorority wants see thier pins on Ebay. Too bad we don't have the capability yet (I just don't think there would be a way of organizing it) for a whole NPC wide "crack down" (does that make sense).

Although they had to pay a pretty penny, I'm glad that the HQ got it instead of some collector.
