Sigmas on your campus?
 

I have been a soror for a long time, and I have seen a lot..believe me. It is interesting to see each sorors views on the brothers on their campus. Our brothers were basically kinda interesting to say the least and not go into detail, but we loved them. How were the Sigmas on your campus? Crazy, Funny, Loving, let me know.

Most of the Sorors who post on here are no longer collegiates...but hopefully one of the collegiate Sorors can respond to you.

For the longest time, the Sigmas at Georgia State University were an exemplary group of young men. They were very active in campus society, in political issues, and in student affairs. I wasn't a member of the undergraduate chapter at GSU, but it seemed that there was a mutual respect present between the Sigmas and Zetas.

Soror True Zeta I have also been a Zeta for more than a few minutes. I can't say I have given any thought about campus matters independent of how my chapter of initiation is doing in terms of activities, grades, membership, etc.

I left my "views" of Sigmas at my former campus there when I left a decade (plus a few more years) ago. I hear that quite a few of them are doing great in their professional and fraternal careers. My view of that is fantastic! I also enjoy talking to members of our brother fraternity who attend our regional and national conferences, where decisions are made and the business of our independant respective organizations is handled.

I remember fondly join projects and yes, I was younger then, so I also remember join parties with fondness. My hope is that our Zeta sorors and Sigma brothers continue to work purposefully as our respective founders would have wanted.

Tell us, what type of community projects does your local graduate chapter perform with the Sigma's alumni members?

No, we didn't have Sigmas on the yard. The chapter died out in 93. We had Frat that we were close to in the area and at neighboring schools(closest one was 40 min away)...but no on the yard experiences with Frat.

But whenever we had a function or did anything Frat would drive to C-Ville to support us....matter of fact, Frat would drive as far south as NC and as far north as NY and as far west as MI to support our chapter. We alwayZ rolled out the blue carpet and showed some of that world famous Zeta hospitality.

When I was an undergrad,
The SIgmas and Zetas were really close.
We were seperate organizations but we did a lot of events together.

The thing about us, was that we were all innovative. We were always different. We always had different ideas. And people remember that about us. I like to say we were/are trend-setters.

The Sigmas on campus were very business minded and did a lot for their chapter and fraternity as a whole.But they were crazy!
I was just amazed by how the were able to accomplish the things they did with how silly and crazy (in a good way http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ) they were. They were very successful at really big ventures.

They were...interesting. The Sigma's had always run the yard in terms of parties, fundraising and general campus visibility. They also had the best looking men! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif The last Sigma line had come in two years before my line. So while we were the same chronological ages (my line was a mostly 21+ line), they were two years older in Greekdom, which was a hot mess sometimes http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif(especially since a couple were my personal friends outside of our Zeta/Sigma relationship). When the times were good, they were really good though. Joint fundraisers, joint socials, even joint meetings when appropriate. When the good times went South though...they went South straight to you know where!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated...Every Finer Woman's Dream!

Hey sorors-

I don't think I have ever posted in GreekChat, but there is a first time for everything. Unfortunately at my alma mata, there were no Sigma's on the yard. They had been off the yard since 1989.

Fortunate we are in the GREAT Great Lakes Region that allowed us to develop a bond with great Sigma men near and far. To this day, we still look to aid and assist our Sigma brother's in their endeavors to return to the yard!

Back in the day, the Sigmas on the yard was the most popular Fraternity. I was not a Zeta at the time, but the Sigmas and the Zeta's appeared to have a great relationship.
My boyfriend at the time was a Sigma man, and between the Zeta's and the Siluettes(their lil' sisters back then)my bf and I stayed in arguements, lol.
The Sigmas were very rowdy and thuggish acting, a part of their charm, but they handled their business.

Greetings members of the Blue and White family. I am not a member, but I just wanted to post about the Sigmas of the Death Rho Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. I am sorry to say, that they disappoint me, which caused me to be disappointed with the organization as a whole, at first, I am happy to say that I have since met members that have changed my perception, (shout of the the Sigmas at the University of Louisiana at Monroe!) For the most part the members do not seem to be very interested in promoting themselves. My closest male friend is a neo Sigma and he doesn't understand why his brothers are like this. Have you ever met any members who were apathetic about the organization and their chapter?

I know this one was pointed to the Sorors, but I'll respond because I feel I have a right. Please forgive me sorors, if I am out of line by responding.

With regard to the comments from OhSoVeryLadylike about the Sigmas at the RHO Chapter, I'll say this:

As you travel around you'll definitely encounter people who'll disappoint you. These people are from ALL walks of life (BGLO or not).

You will see people who are not very interested in POSITIVELY promoting themselves. (I assume this is what you meant.) On the oher side of that you'll see people who are VERY interested in doing this. Lets not focus too much on those that we perceive to be un-positive. We should concentrate more on doing positive things.

For the neo, you tell him to just hold strong and concentrate on accomplishing his goals for Sigma (and his community). This is what is ultimately important anyway.

Also, tell him to register for GreekChat. I am sure the sorors (and the frat) would like to hear from some positive brothers.

As for meeting people who are apathetic about organizations they are in, you'll meet those people everywhere. Remember, it's all about perception. What one member feels may not neccessarily be the gospel for everyone.

Like I said, my perception of the organization, has be greatly changed by viewing how positive you all are. I now truly respect the Blue and White Family greatly.

I have to respond in defense of Rho Chapter. I did not pledge Rho, but I was a Sigma on the Yard during their first year back(1999-2000). Therefore, I have first-hand knowledge of Sigma, Zeta, and the NPHC at SU in general.

Rho has done and has continued to do as much service(if not more)as the rest of the Pan-Hell at Southern. However, the Digest has a D.G.A.F.(you figure out what that spells)attitude towards Sigma, Zeta, SGRho, and Iota. Therefore, there aren't any articles covering those events, even if they had prior knowledge. Back in Spring 2000, my best friend wrote an article and hand-delivered it to the Digest office concerning our Campus Clean-Up. It never made the paper. Likewise, Sigma and Zeta has held forums and other events that were clearly posted on campus and were promoted. The student body chose not to attend.

Have you ever wondered why you never see the Sigmas acting a fool on the Yard? Maybe it's because they're out tutoring at an elementary school or more importantly doing their schoolwork. The loudest person on campus more than likely will not be a Sigma, because Phi Beta Sigma is not about talking loud and saying nothing. We are not a one-dimensional organization. Therefore, we are not truly in the same category with other fraternities. In math, Sigma represents the sum. Sigma encompasses all aspects into one organization. Sigmas as a whole know when to be "pretty", when to be "buck-wild", and when to be "intellectual". There is a time and a place for everything. Go to a Sigma party and you will see us get buck-wild. Catch us handling business and you will see us in our pretty attire. After that, you can pull our transcripts and we will prove our intellectual prowess. Sigma is not merely one image.

As far a self-promotion goes, you may want to revise your definition of that term. Unfortunately, Southern University's idea of promotion is centered on parties and stepping. There is nothing wrong with stepping and partying, but NPHC organizations do a lot more than just that. As I stated before, Sigma does not have one aspect to live up to. We don't have to wear suits to class to uphold our organization's image. Conversely, we don't have to wear cutoff shorts and gold boots either. Additionally, a lot of Sigmas at SU are either in Engineering or some other challenging major, so they are probably in their books half of the time. They are not "apathetic" towards their organization. If anything, SU is apathetic towards them. In any case, Phi Beta Sigma is there to stay and no amount of player hating or ignorance will cause them to leave.
