Daughter Of TV’s 'Dog The Bounty Hunter' Dies Before His Wedding

A daughter of reality TV star Duane "Dog" Chapman was killed in a car accident a day before her father's wedding, a spokesman said Saturday.

Barbara Katy Chapman, 23, died Friday night near her home in Fairbanks, Alaska, said Michael Feeney, senior vice president of A&E television network.

Duane Chapman's wedding on the Big Island went forward as planned Saturday after the family consulted with a preacher and agreed to celebrate her life at the ceremony, Feeney told The Associated Press.

The star of "Dog the Bounty Hunter" married his longtime sidekick, Beth Smith. The couple have been together for 16 years and have two children.

The wedding will be featured in an Aug. 14 episode of the show, about Chapman and his tattooed crew of fugitive finders.

According to press reports, Barbara Katy Chapman, 23, died Friday night near her home in Fairbanks, Alaska, after the stolen car she was riding in careened off a highway.

She was one of 11 of the bounty hunter's children. She is survived by her mother, Lyssa Greene, and her 4-year-old son, Travis Drake-Lee Chapman.

Judging from this article, I'm willing to bet that Dog might not have known his daughter.

Stolen car. One of 11 children. 23 year old mother of a 4 year old.

Yes. I'm being judgmental.

I was just thinking this. Also--if he's such a Christian , why weren't they married before now? 16 years of basically shacking up?

Come on guys...most parents don't want to outlive their children.

kddani 05-26-2006 06:57 AM

It is unfortunate. However, they were obviously not very close at all as she wasn't attending his wedding.

DeltAlum 05-26-2006 09:15 AM

A young woman, who by accident of birth is the daughter of a "celebrity," is dead. Perhaps the world should allow her to rest in peace.

But apparently it's okay to speak ill of the dead if you're classier than they are! Which you are! Especially if you're the kind of person who would speak ill of the dead on GC! So classy!!!!

I feel sorry for that poor 4-year old boy.:(

epchick 08-08-2006 11:53 PM

I just saw the wedding episode of "Dog the Bounty Hunter."

He actually did know his daughter and he talked about how he was there when she was born and how he couldn't believe that he finally had a daughter (after so many boys).

He did say that the daughter went back to alaska to live with her mother and that there were some problems between the daughter/Duane and the daughters "choices." He also said that he took care of her son for a while.

He was very distraught about it....poor him--they told him THE DAY of his wedding!

jadis96 08-09-2006 11:38 PM

slightly off topic I know, but my mom pointed this out to me. In the opening of the show they list Beth as Dog's wife and did last season at least. Maybe they were married by common law or something? I guess I just assumed they had been married before this until I heard about the wedding. Anyone know about this?

AXO Alum 08-10-2006 10:34 AM

Okay - I'll admit it - I am a Dog junkie. I have been hooked for the past year since my MOTHER IN LAW (of all people) got me watching!

Dog & his wife Beth (and her gigantic hooters) were common law spouses. I think the success of the show & the fact that we all love a "celebrity" wedding contributed to the decision to make it legal.

Dog & his daughter were reunited last year when she showed up to make things right in her life with her baby. They were reconnecting & trying to have a productive relationship when she fell of the wagon again and left leaving the baby with Dog & Beth. I do not know if they still have the baby (now 4) or what happened with that.

I will say this - it is funny to see them pray before leaving, and then everything on the hunt is MF this and that -- but they do try to do right by and for people. I have seen many times where they will turn around and post bail again for someone that is trying to make something of themselves. They could be worse people and for that I can forgive them their use of words that we don't normally use in polite company.

The episode with the wedding, if you didn't see it, was incredibly sad with the news being reported to Dog and then cameras rolling again. The man made mistakes & didn't have the normal start to life that we all hope for - he turned things around & now helps other people get back on track. Now he faces the worst - seeing one of his own children killed through her poor choices. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

LOL! I don't know why I started watching, but I really dig the show. Dog is wacky but entertaining.

Maybe I just miss working with felons every day.

While I was out running errands I thought... has my life really come to the point that I am on a message board "taking up" for Dog & his family? LOL :D

Its like a train wreck - you know you shouldn't watch, but you just can't help it. Mr. AXO and I like to play a game called "how much of Beth's hooters will we see on the show tonight" LOL - I think Mary Kay asked her to NOT use their product on camera. She was getting a little scary with the war paint, but she's toned it down a lot. The funny thing is that despite her looks, she is really a smart cookie - maybe that's part of her disguise - looking like the dumb blonde :p

I know that I previously said that I cringe everytime I watch DOG because I get afraid I'll know one of the fugitives featured -- it's happened before.

If you saw the first episode (the one where Blue runs away), you'll notice that the Chapmans have a brand new house (apparently it was part of their contract with A&E). To call Portlock, their neighborhood, affluent is an understatement. Homes there go for at least $1.2 million -- quite a step up from Kailua, where they used to live.

Now if only they'd get Justin the nephew back, I'd be happy. He's pretty hot when he's not busy burning stuff down.

Oh, and AXO Alum, don't worry about defending the Chapmans. While I don't have 13 brothers and sisters of my own, I do come from a big family who takes in relatives who need help.

And for the record, common-law marriages aren't allowed in Hawai`i. However, if another state recognizes a couple's common-law marriage, then it is recognized here as well.

I was lunching at Skippy's (a hole in the wall diner next to Da Kine BB) the other day and I saw a group of tourists actually enter the office, possibly to get autographs and photos.

Not sure when Season 4 will start, as filming only began last Monday.

Oh yeah - leave it to talking about Dog to get you back out on the boards ;)

I'm coming to visit and I am SO going to get an autograph for my MIL. It would be the gift of the century for her!

...off to explain to Mr. AXO that a trip to Hawaii is in our future...

The Dog

I started watching Dog a few months ago. I love this show. I am so over people JUDGING others. Being married legally has nothing to do with being married in the eyes of God. Dog and Beth felt married already. Someone in here mentioned that this daughter that was killed came to HAwaii. I am thinking this was Lisa, not Barbara the one that died. Maybe it was before I started watching. God uses all kinds of people to spread the word. Who are we to question why Dog swears? He is a good family man and a good man. He needed to walk on the wrong side to see the light.

I do have a question..Justin is on the show tonight..What did he do before? Why did they have to forgive him?

You're right. I only hope that one day he quits smoking, because I think he is a good guy, and I would want him to live a long life doing good works, and not having his life cut short by cancer -- that's all.

And I want to know about Justin too since I missed tonight's show.

I didn't get to see "Bustin' with Justin" last night, so I can't tell you what happened. I saw bits and pieces, but that was at the bar and the CC wasn't too good.

Baby Lyssa is Barbara and Tucker's full sister, and has a daughter, Abby. Wikipedia has her date of birth listed at 1988, so if that's the case, she must have been VERY young when she had her daughter. They call her "Baby Lyssa" because their mother shares the same name.

When the show started Justin was barely 21 and didn't know any better. My guess is that he simply wasn't ready for this kind of responsibility, his family (who, I don't think, is his blood family anyway) knew that, and A&E decided not to bring him back, and brought Duane Lee in instead.

I know that he took a stab at modeling/acting/music while splitting his time in Colorado, but that's all I know.

The Dog rocks! I love the man!

I was watching the local news today and they said Federal marshals arrested him at 6am. Since they're in the middle of filming Season 4, the cameras filmed the arrest and followed Beth and the family to the Federal Courthouse.

What I don't get is why Mexican authorities waited all this time. They say Dog, Leland, and Tim failed to appear for their July 2003 court date. Why wouldn't they show up, though?

So far the judge is considering releasing them on bail until the extradition issue is resolved. It doesn't seem likely that the Chapmans will flee, considering they are in the middle of filming for A&E. He has retained Brook Hart as his defense attorney, who I think is the best defense attorney in the state. He's a veteran of high profile cases, so I hope he'll be just as successful with this one!

CutiePie2000 09-15-2006 11:43 PM

You know, situations like this where Dog is now under arrest make me so angry. I'm glad that Dog and his family members used any means necessary (legal OR NOT, in Mexico) to take that dirt-bag Luster off the streets. The means justified the ends, in my opinion.

Unregistered- 09-16-2006 12:05 AM

DOG released on $300,000 bail.

Leland and Tim were also released on $100,000 bail. They'll be allowed to continue their bounty hunting, but have to return home when they're not working. In addition to that, they had to surrender their passports AND wear monitoring devices. They anticipate the extradition trial to take place sometime in either November or December.

The local support has been overwhelming. The scene outside the Kuhio Building looked similar to a Native Hawaiian rally! Guilty or not, I doubt that this latest situation has done anything to hurt his popularity at all. Locals still respect him for all his work getting the bad guys off our streets.

VandalSquirrel 09-16-2006 12:14 AM

Doesn't Mexico have bigger things to worry about? Drug cartels, human trafficking, poverty? It is unsettling that they had no problem with a convicted rapist wandering in their midst and wouldn't extradite him, but they want to extradite Dog & Co., maybe some federales wanted a free trip to Hawaii and needed justification?

CutiePie2000 09-16-2006 02:12 PM

OTW: I hope that the people in Hawaii make a huge stink and get your governor / senator, whatever involved to fight this & maybe get a pardon from Mexico. People have to get their priorities straight here:

Rapist off the streets of USA, Mexico and wherever else = GOOD
Dog locked up and not able to apprehend perps = BAD

I so agree. This is a perfect example of where the law is an ass.
