Betty the Ugly

Betty the Ugly

This looks like it's going to be such a good show. I can't wait. The trailer had me tearing up a bit.

KillarneyRose 05-20-2006 07:50 PM

That looks like it will be a pretty entertaining show! Like you, SOPI_Jawbreaker, I got a little bit teary looking at the trailer.

Betty bears an uncomfortable resemblance to a junior high, pre-contact lenses and nosejob me

This show is based on a telenovella "Betty la Fea" (Betty the Ugly). It was the most popular telenovella from South America. It was broadcast on all the major Spanish-speaking networks. I used to watch it to improve my Spanish. It was a good show. If they can "translate" it for an American audience, people will like it.

I'll definitely be watching this. I like America and Vanessa Williams so I'm hoping the show is good too.

Hugs to KR for being reminded of her pre-pubescent past. :(

Oh, goodness--you, too? Jr. high was a trip through Hell.

The show looks cute, though!

Can't wait to see this show! Telenovela meets Devil Wears Prada. What's not to like?

Unregistered- 09-29-2006 05:18 AM

I love Ugly Betty already. She's the heroine we're all cheering for!

I thought America fit that character so well. Still, I'm so used to seeing America in younger roles and despite the fact that Betty's obviously an adult woman (she mentioned internships and such), I keep being reminded of someone not really matured yet.

It also brought back memories of a braces and glasses version of me, circa 1993.

And regarding Vanessa Williams..come on. Is she not tired of having roles that require her to be the raging bitch?

kddani 09-29-2006 06:17 AM

I wasn't that into it last night... hoping that it gets a little better, I understand that they have to establish the backstory and all that. I personally thought it was okay, but it didn't really do a lot for me. We'll see how it goes.

Very much reminiscent of Devil Wears Prada but I liked it. Will tune into the next ep.

For those who missed it, it repeats tonight at 7 on ABC Family.

xo_kathy 09-29-2006 12:52 PM

I only watched bits and pieces of the begining as I was cooking dinner, but it was way too close to Devil Wears Prada - I felt like I was watching the TV version of it. And it didn't interest me enough to not switch the channel to watch The Office instead. Maybe I'll try to watch it tonight on ABC Family and see if I take to it.

Jill1228 09-29-2006 01:13 PM

I enjoyed the first episode...I need to check out a few more

mu_agd 09-29-2006 01:14 PM

I LOVE Salma Hayek in the telenova.

jadis96 09-30-2006 09:15 AM

I enjoyed it. I am just dreading if they try to start a relationship between Betty and her boss. I mean, yeah it would be cute for a few eppisodes maybe, but few shows can live throwugh their main characters getting together.

thesweetestone 09-30-2006 09:35 AM

I really liked the first episode.

CrimsonTide4 10-04-2006 10:07 AM

Jessica from TWOP is recapping it. She gave the first ep an A-

carnation 10-04-2006 04:55 PM

oh my gosh. Betty is the big dancer from that Disney movie "Gotta Kick It Up".

CrimsonTide4 10-06-2006 11:33 AM

Did anyone watch it last night? What did you think of week 2?

I liked it! I think it was a bit predicatable with the whole "book" storyline, but still good. I'm going to keep watching. Plus, it doesn't hurt that it's on before Grey's Anatomy...LOL.

There's a newer one too that's on univision, "La Fea Mas Bella", that started a few months ago and has the same sort of idea. I love telanovellas. So cheesy. (Plus, it doesn't hurt that I have a thing for Hispanic men;) )

I'm going to keep watching as well. My favorite parts were the fight between Hilda the sister and Gina the neighbor, Hilda telling her son to cover his ears, Marc in that orange velour jumpsuit, and the bunny torture pictures.

LOL...that was funny. The funny part about this show is that it's very dramatic but I still like it b/c it's well done. That was classic when Betty brought in her empanadas...LOL

tunatartare 10-06-2006 01:55 PM

The part with Hilda telling the boy to put on his headphones reminded me too much of "earmuffs" from Old School.

LOL, I did too. I guess empanadas override the smell of lettuce and water, lol.

I enjoy the balance of comedy and drama. The telenovela last night as well as the fashion television show that is shown.

I am looking forward to next week when Betty looks like a Latina Material Girl 2 decades too late, lol.

I missed the tail end of the preview (freaking Tivo) but caught the part where the guys are whistling at her...haha

I just read it, pretty funny:cool:

tinydancer 10-06-2006 02:13 PM

I watched it for the first time last night and enjoyed it. However, I just saw "The Devil Wears Prada" over the weekend and I kept thinking hmmm this seems familiar....

It is familiar, but Devil Wears Prada was first published in 2003 and the first Betty la fea came out in 1999. (according to Wikipedia) I think they are similar but still not the same story line, especially since DWP focuses on her horrible boss.

AGDLynn 10-07-2006 07:59 AM

Speaking of telenovas, there are some shows on the Hispanic channel that I could get interested in except for the fact that they have no English subtitles. Yet, I can get Spanish subtitles on other stations, lol.

On a side note...other shows on the Spanish stations look totally wierd, i.e., stupid, lol. Kinda like a Hispanic gong show.

There is this preacher who dresses like Liberace and for a long time I couldn't figure out if male or female..know who I mean??

Back to Betty, it's cute and predictable. I did love the women fighting/use headphones scene.

As for next week, okay, in reality, geesh!! I would love to see Cliff and Stacy from What Not to Wear re-do her, lol.

thesweetestone 10-07-2006 06:39 PM

I like the show, but I hope she is not going to be quitting that job EVERY week.

thesweetestone 10-13-2006 03:43 AM

I really like this show!!:)

Me too!! Last night's ep was the best so far. I really liked the examination of the 3 contrasting father/child relationships.

Okay, who the hell is Fay and how is she relevant to the story?

Did Papa Meade try to off her or something? He obviously didn't get the memo that she's still alive...and I'm curious as to what Wilhelmina's relationship is with her -- other than bringing down the Meade clan, of course.

Did they ever mention how Alex died?

Fey is the former editor-in-chief of Mode, before Daniel took over. She was "killed" in a car accident before the show started although Caleb Nichol never quite believed that she was killed and had had that private detective looking into it. I believe her and Wilhelmina are trying to take the Meade's down since Wilhelmina was passed over for the EIC position.

Manolo Blahnik's Spring 2004 Collection!

It just needs to be said that Betty's nephew (the DDR-ing fashionista) gets better and better every week. What a scene stealer!

So glad that he's out of the closet now instead of later!

I laughed so hard at that scene yesterday. He was SOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED to be at Mode. I wish they would offer him an internship there.

I really enjoyed his exchange with Marc yesterday at the photo shoot.

LeslieAGD 01-18-2007 11:00 PM

Today's episode was very cute! Great one liners (what's up with the cheetos tan?).

I totally saw the Alex/Alexis twist coming, but I can't wait to find out if Christina takes the mystery envelop to the police or if she opens it.

thesweetestone 01-19-2007 09:14 PM

This show is already good, but I can't wait to see what Rebecca Romijn adds.

Unregistered- 01-19-2007 10:17 PM

So did not see the Alex/Alexis thing coming. All this time I thought that it was Fey and somehow she survived the car accident.

When I saw Rebecca Romijn's name in the opening credits, I had no clue who she was going to play...WOW.

Poor Daniel. :(
