2006 centennial Celebration
Greetings,I have a question to you Alpha brothers.I was told when i called the national headquarters that in order for me to attend the 06 centennial in D.C i have to be registered under and Alpha brother. Is there anyone willing to place me on their account so i can attend this years centennial..
Thank you |
You are correct - you must be an active member to register for the convention.
|
kay
Ok so does that mean i can not attend. If so thanks for the info...
Nefertari |
it means you can't register unless you know a brother. you may be able to attend the public functions by purchasing tickets - call the national office.
|
Registration closes on June 3rd....:(
|
$$$$$
Bro. Lionel Ritchie is performing. I understand the cost is $150.00. Did you receive the letter from nationals last week.

Dear Brothers,
Thank you for your overwhelming response to the summons to come to Washington, DC for the purpose of convening the Centennial Convention of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. on July 25 - 30, 2006. Because of your diligence, we must now terminate registration to the Centennial Convention. Registrations received via mail and postmarked, or those faxed or brought to the General Office after midnight on June 3, 2006 will not be accepted. You will not be able to register on-line either as of midnight on this date and you cannot register on-site. We simply do not have the space to accommodate additional attendees at many of the previously planned events. If you have previously purchased a full registration you are still eligible to purchase additional tickets to the Friday evening Centennial VIP Reception and Gala Concert featuring Brother Lionel Richie, and sponsored by the Education Foundation and to the Saturday evening Black and Gold Banquet. Thank you for making this Centennial Celebration the largest event in the history of our fraternity. We have far exceeded the capacity of our facilities and the expectations of our convention planning team. Fraternally, Darryl R. Matthews, Sr., General President |
That is good news that the convention is so popular it is bad news for brothers that have yet to register!

Wow, just wow.

Did folx just greatly underestimate how huge this would be, or was it limited by design?
|
the host hotel is one of the largest hotels in DC. the property once was a sheraton - i use to manage group and meeting space for the chain in my much younger years - in addition to the host hotel there is an alternate property that we have across the street - i understand this hotel is also full.
speace would be a problem for any organization of this size - especially given the fact we celebrate 100 years of service. brothers that have never attended convention are registered for this one. its a once in a lifetime event. |

But you are right about finding space. In fact we are now limited to about 6 major cities that can accomodate our national conventions. And they all must have major size convention centers in addition to plenty of hotel properties that we can block. I am not sure what we will do for our 100th, if DC can't accomodate us. |
FYI for Brothers and friends unfamiliar with DC
The metro (subway) station closest to the host hotel is WOODLEY PARK-ZOO/ADAMS MORGAN which is on the RED LINE. It is about a block's walk up a hill to the hotel.
I did a little research this morning to assist the bros who need hotel ideas. If your hotel is off of Connecticut Avenue, then you can also access the host hotel via the L2 or L4 bus. Here are hotels and their nearest metro station: Jurys Washington (DuPont Circle) The Churchill Hotel (Take the L2 Bus from 18th and T Streets, or walk to DuPont Circle) The M Street Hotel (Take the L2 Bus from 20th and M Streets, or walk to DuPont Circle) Best Western Georgetown Suites (Take the L2 Bus from 20th and L Streets, or walk to DuPont Circle) The Westin Embassy Row (DuPont Circle OR take the L4 from 20th and M Streets) The Beacon Hotel (Farragut North, three minutes from Woodley Park) You get the picture. It is only two minutes from DuPont Circle to Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan via metro, and only seven minutes via the bus. A cab ride might take five, but will get you from door to door. I suggest you use a combination of www.expedia.com and the http://www.wmata.com trip planner. Get the address of potential hotels from expedia and put them into the trip planner. Good luck, bros! |
Thank you Stranger!!!!

Dear Brothers,
My name is Rashid Darden (6-Mu Lambda-Sp03). On behalf of my mentor, friend, and Brother Brodrick Clarke (10-Sigma Eta-Sp90), I would like to welcome you to Washington, DC for the Centennial Convention. Brodrick and I work for Heads Up, a University Neighborhood Initiative. Established in 1996, Heads Up provides children and youth from low-income neighborhoods with academic skills and learning opportunities they need to succeed by connecting them with college students who serve as after-school and summer teachers. As an extension of our mission we strive to teach and practice three principles at every level of our organization: Service, Learning, and Leadership. I was introduced to Heads Up through Brodrick, who is a Site Director at LaSalle Elementary School in DC, in a neighborhood that has had an entire generation wiped out by the crack epidemic of the 80s. Inspired by Brodrick, I joined the Heads Up family this year at Amidon Elementary School in Southwest DC. In the face of abject poverty, both Brodrick and I persevere. As an aside, we also have the pleasure of working with the daughter of our own Brother Bobby Austin, who is the Chairman of the Centennial Symposium. Brothers, we do good work here. In the time that Brodrick has been a Site Director, he has propelled his site to new heights and fostered positive relationships with the faculty and administration at LaSalle. Here at Amidon, I have changed the culture of the students so that they have a new respect of order, discipline, and most importantly, learning. We welcome you to come observe our work. We also welcome you to come serve with us. If you are interested in visiting one of the eight Heads Up sites in Washington during your time in DC, please contact Brother Brodrick Clarke at (202)486-1925 or email him at bclarke@headsup-dc.org. Our sites are open from 12:30pm to 6:30pm during every day of the convention except Saturday, July 29. On that day we will host our Tenth Anniversary Project Fair, in which our students will present poster projects based on their community experiences over the summer. If you are interested in attending the Project Fair, please email Ms. Davena Mgbeokwere at dmgbeokwere@headsup-dc.org. We know that many Brothers will be in town who didn't get the chance to register during the deadline. What better way to fill your time than in the spirit of service? We hope that you will join us when you visit DC. I am also extending a hearty welcome to you, Professor and all of your brothers in attendance to Washington, DC. I am a native Washingtonian. I've visited many other major cities but there is no place like home. So welcome to my home! I look forward to seeing you. I remember how nice you were to me and my Sorors last summer in North Carolina. I do plan to attend your public events. |

Sneak Peek
I got a sneak peek at the official souvenier journal for the centennial convention today! I went to the host hotel in an attempt to help stuff bags, but they were already finished hours early....so, we hung out for a bit and I saw one of my chapter bros, who had the journal.
It's hot.....it's thick....it has mad information and photographs.... It's high quality. I am really REALLY excited now. And mad that the convention doesn't start until Tuesday! |
I'm so close to finalizing my plans for next weekend. My dad lives in DC, and ironically he was making plans to come up to NY to visit a friend of his. If I get to come down, he'll change his plans and stay home. :)

Last night, the General President was on C-SPANs Q and A. I'm sure the episode will repeat.
Congrats to the men of Alpha Phi Alpha as you continue to celebrate ONE CENTURY of service! Enjoy and Stay Safe! |

Good stuff. But I would be a little nervous about trying to house 10,000 Alphas in 6-7 hotels. Especially since guys don't double up like women do.
In any case, kudos to the Alphas for getting "majority" America to see what our orgs are about and what they mean to us as a community. The way for the rest of us will be a lot smoother, because of you. |

Although I wasn't the Brother with the shortest distance to travel (some lucky Bros happened to live ONE BLOCK from the host hotel!)...I figure I will be the first to post my comments.
This was my first national gathering of any sort. I became a member while a poor college student, and spent nearly three years in various jobs that prevented me from doing a whole lot of travel. So it was great that my first convention could be here in DC. That way I could afford registration and save a whole lot of money that I could use toward buying para, LOL. I really, truly enjoyed everything, from the convention bag to the "Club Alpha" parties....I met so many brothers from the internet, including Professor from GC, GoldenSquare from MegaGreek, MrBiig from GFA/SG, and others, including WarGames06 who I already knew. I also met FinerWoman10A91, FeeFee, and even more GC ladies! And let's not talk about allllll the bros from Facebook and Myspace that I met! Bananas! (pun intended) I also met H. Patrick Swygert, president of Howard University (not an Alpha) before our final plenary session and Vic Carter (frat) who is an anchor in Baltimore. I saw the new Supreme Basileus of AKA and other dignitaries from other orgs at our public program. Most inspiring moment....Brothers Lionel Richie and Edward Brooke gripping each other at the public forum. :) Best tangible from the convention: The Centennial Book of Essays and Letters: Excerpts from the Brotherhood of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Brothers.... GET THIS BOOK. Over 700 pages of KNOWLEDGE. Best moment: Gamma Mu and Beta Alpha having a step off in the hotel lobby. I was standing there like "Is this about the be the Greek 'You Got Served?'" And it was....but it was great! Best intangible thing.... realizing that so many of my favorite people in the world are Alphas. They're not my ONLY favorite people....but at about day three, I was running into people that I had forgotten were Alphas. I was like dang, they frat too.....no wonder I like them so much! Even the Homosexuality in Black Fraternities Discussion at the HU Bookstore went well. I didn't even have to use my AK. (LOL) (PS, FeeFee I gotta fill you in on some backstory...watch out for the PM) At any rate....YES there are pictures. Hold your horses. I will post a link to my site as soon as I crop and resize them. Honestly, that will not happen today, LOL. I gotta book to finish editing! Fraternally, Mr. Matter-of-Factly 6-M/\-Sp03 |
Whoa!
Man it has been a while since I've posted on this forum, but after attending the centennial joint here in D.C., I had to come back and say how much fun I had. What a convention!!!! I have been to about 7 or 8 Alpha Conventions, and I have attended National or Regional conventions for all of the NPHC orgs. except for the Iotas, and I have never seen anything like this. D.C. was on FIRE!!! So much HISTORY! No, not just Alpha History, but BLACK History!!! So many parties. To walk through the Hotel Lobby at 4:00am and to still see Thousands of folks just hanging out was crazy. To see a bunch of SG Rhos come down from B-More and Party Walk all night long was nice. To see the group of Zeta's walk in with their blue & white shirts and chill with some of the bruhs was cool. To meet many Delta's who came down from Boston and New York was also cool...and you know the AKA's were deep. We saw one Que there...and he looked pissed (LOL). The crazy thing was that there was SOOOOOOOOOO much going on (all over D.C.) that I ALWAYS felt like no matter what I was doing, I was missing out on sooo much. :D In any event, all went well and I am even more proud to be an Alpha today than ever (and that is saying a lot). 06! "Inquisitive" #2 another DEUCE on the Loose! |

I saw two Ques at the McDonald's by Howard....same morning as our final plenary and cookout.... maybe they were looking for the one that Inquisitive06 found. ;) |

But in all seriousness, this QUE was leaning up against the wall and just 'taking in' all of the Black & Gold festivities. He stood there for a LONG TIME. He did look pissed. He really did. Actually, he looked like he had seen a Ghost! Shocked! You know 'THAT' look; ....when you have "heard" (negatively speaking) about a certain group of people....but never SEEN them (in large numbers) in action yourself......so you just go by what you have "heard".....and then, all of a sudden, you are in their mist.....trapped in the belly of the beast, and then you are like.......WTF???? How could THIS be? That is the look that he had. Honestly, if anyone was there (Alpha or not), how could you not be impressed? Seriously. It really was a good convention and historical for all of us. That being said, he (and all other greeks were welcomed). After all, I have been to one of their conclaves and most other orgs. conventions. I've always enjoyed myself.....and was usually greeted with love.....as I am quick to put some Black & Gold on.;) |
Quote:
Anyway, I had a great time at the convention in DC. I met the Past General Presidents, Andrew Young and I got to meet Lou Gossett Jr at the Symposium. I have not been active in ALpha for a while so this was a great way to begin my reclamation in the Fraternity. The stepwhow was off the chain. I havent been to a stepshow in about ten years and some things were different, but the shows have remained good and fraternal. I was glad to see some of my caucasion frat brahs stepping as well. The Black and Gold Banquet was great. I am inthe military and I pledged at a military chapter and so it was good to fraternize with my military brothers. This convention has definantly rejuvenated my desire to serve my fraternity. I cant wait to get involved. I want to woek with the undergrad chapter of the school I graduated from. and I also cant wait until my state and region conventions |
What a Fabulous Event!
Rashid, it was great meeting you! This was a tremendous milestone in black history indeed! I have never had so many Alpha men try to talk to me at the same time! LOL!!!!! And you know our booth had the southern belles and coolest sister Greeks selling Jewels- The Story of the Founding of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. How fly were they with the www.jewels1906.com t-shirts!
Being a publicist is hard work:cool: ...but somebody's gotta do it! |
Speaking of Jewels....
Here is a picture of Darrius Gourdine speaking about and signing copies of Jewels. I especially enjoyed when he talked about who his Alpha hero is: Mal Goode, first African American journalist on network TV!
http://oldgoldsoul.com/gallery/data/...8/jewels05.jpg And here is one of me and Dr. Parks right after our Homosexuality in Black Fraternities discussion: http://oldgoldsoul.com/gallery/data/...fratdisc03.jpg More photos to come! Bear with me! |
Is Dr. Parks from the Univ. of Kentucky?
