80 MPH in Texas Soon?

Per this article

Definitely make life interesting in Texas. It is true that a lot of people do 75 - 79 already.

Texans, what do you all think?

DSTinguished1 05-17-2006 11:58 AM

Well my mother is a former Texan and from the times I have been there I can attest that they do drive very fast and dangerous!!! This scares me because it will only increase fatal car accidents.

MsSweetness 05-17-2006 11:58 AM

I know in Michigan it's 70 or 75, I can't remember. It didn't seem that fast when I was there, but then again I do 80 on the freeway anyway. Our speed limit is 55.:( I have a lead foot.

Me too.

When I drive home from Charlotte to Ohio, the speed limits change. In parts of NC and all of WV, it is 70 and in Ohio and Va it is 65.

I typically do between 70 and 75.

Some days, some highways, to do the speed limit means you are going to piss some people off.:o

But I agree with you Soror DSTinguished1, increasing the speed limit means that people will jump their minimum to OVER 80 and car accidents will increase.:(

Honeykiss1974 05-17-2006 12:20 PM

People in Dallas already drive like its the last lap of the Indy 500 (even when it rains  ) so I can only imagine.

But on the interstate, even here the speed limit is 75, which means people go 80 anyway.

Diva_I.S.O.S 05-17-2006 12:32 PM

In Houston most folks are driving 75-80 on I-10 when the speed limit is 65. Only problem is that if you raise it to 80, people will drive 85-90...

And, oh yeah, people in Houston can't drive.

Yeah, try going 65 on Inbound I-485 at 6:45am. You won't last very long.

Some college students at Georgia STate University recently did an experiment in rush hour traffic where they had 5 cars spread out across the 5 lane of 285 and drive the speed limit (it is 55 in the metro area). They filmed the entire thing and said folks were cussing them out, giving them the bird, going on the medium to pass them, etc. The DOT even said it was dangerous.

I do agree with the last statement. I automatically drive about 5 miles over the speed limit, so if it was 80 I know I would be doing 85!

Ditto and they sure can't drive. The speed limit is like 60 on most highways here and thats not cool! Everything is so far apart in Houston though, but hey its been my home for 4 years!

This is the truth! I'm down here for work, and I can't believe some of the foolishness that these folks try.

enigma_AKA 05-17-2006 06:19 PM

I think it's a good thing. Being a fast driver doesn't mean one is a bad driver. If they increase the speed limit, it doesn't mean that people will all of a sudden go crazy, going 95/105 on an expressway, just because. They'll just stay with the flow of traffic, as usual. Those crazy individuals who drive crazy will continue to drive crazy.

Besides, the state troopers/police will hand out less tickets. :)

Yep.

I average close to 80 on any interstate/expressway. I try to stick it (CC) @ 79. I only go over when I drive my mother's car. It's easy to get it up there and not realize you're over 90 mph. :o

Another leadfoot! :D

I think people will still drive the speeds they want to, its just that the Texas Rangers (state police, right?) will give out fewer speeding tickets.

Folks in MD/DC like to drive next to each other, regardless of the speed, conditions or number of lanes

They can't be any worse than Chicago drivers. Ole, passive-aggresive, going 60 in the fast lane, not recognizing there are actually lanes for folks to drive in selves!

I hope that the speed limit is increased. It will help with trips to Houston, Austin, San Antonio from Dallas.

Yipee! Now I can worry less a ticket. :D Of course I do use caution, especially during rainy weather.

RedefinedDiva 05-19-2006 01:48 PM

Hi. My name is RD and I have a leadfoot.

In some instances, I am sure that it will make people drive even faster, but to me, it would reduce my chances of getting a ticket. I know that I can PUSH IT on the highway. I try to stay close to 70-75. But baby, give me an open stretch of highway and it's on like popcorn!

Yeah, but like we have mountains and hills to consider as well as floating bridges, so driving like we are on the Autobaun is well, stoopid... And I'm in that bullisht traffic all the time...

Then we have idiots that drive slow in the fast lane... Now that just ceremoniously pisses me off... I feel like I outta be a NASCAR drive and bump them...

And Dallas, I'm sorry, but the I-20 from Tyler to Dallas, now driving fast is on THAT particular stretch is stoopid... There were accidents DAILY when I lived there...

Says much to the engineering of roads in different states...

SoCal drivers are the looneist need to be medicated drivers I have EVER seen... YOU MUST be entering the freeway at 65-70 mph from the on-ramp to BE on the freeway... Or you WILL be blown off on "general principle"...

And LA freeways are a mess, and folks still drive them like they are on the Autobaun, at least 100 mph average in ALL 5 lanes--including the "cell phone slow lane"--lane number 6 ...

So the CHiPs officers have their pick of the litter for whomever they choose to ticket that day... But most of the time, they are runnin' up under folks who decide to NOT take their full medication regimen and make a run for the Border...

And that isht gets televised and ruins my shows when I'm down there...

Most of the time, folks got those bootlegged "fit Honda-BMW-Mercedes-Kia-Hyundais" mixes with NOS in the car and dual loudners, no governers, with 20" dubs... My dad put that isht on my Civic then sold it for a mint... That's why folks go fast down in SoCal...

NUPE4LIFE 05-21-2006 10:50 AM

An increase in the speed limit doesn't necessarily mean that the amount of accidents will increase. In Germany there is no speed limit on the Audubon. I don't have any information on the accident rates there but I imagine if it were high they would have inacted a speed limit by now.
