Happy Confederate Memorial Day weekend

Apparently, that's a South Carolina state holiday. All state offices are closed.

No, I'm not joking.

Weird. Another reason to have the day off in the south?

I bet you the official song for this holiday is Loverboy "workin for the weekend"

War Mullets

I'm interested to know how the African American community of SC feels about it being a State holiday.

BobbyTheDon 05-10-2006 11:01 AM

Oh gee I don't know Alphafrog. Me thinks they are bbqing it up, takin their shirt off, twistin it on their head spinnin it like a helicopter.

Link.

NC celebrates it today, as well.
But, do all the states close their state offices in honor of the day?

I don't think so, but you lived here longer then I have, D....

Do you remember them closing?

That is not what I meant.:p :p

I'm just wondering, since some African-americans support wearing/flying the Conferderate flag in honor of what their ancestors went though, and others are strictly against it.

I lived in LA for 8 years and I don't remember it ever being brought up, so I don't think it's THAT widespead. I wouldn't be suprised if the state offices closed, but I never really go there so I don't really know.

Optimist Prime 05-10-2006 12:44 PM

i've never heard of it....i hope we get the day off though

Same here for Georgia.

FSUZeta 05-10-2006 08:17 PM

i have lived in florida for the majority of my life, and have never heard of this holiday-no state or county offices close.

PhiMuAmberkins 05-10-2006 10:19 PM

I've heard of it, but none of our offices close or anything.

As for the maybe it's offensive angle, well, it's history. History is offensive sometimes, but you can't just ignore it.

I don't know about that one. I've never heard of it. Nor, do I remember learning about it in Louisiana history class in 8th grade.

Maybe many years ago it may have been recognized, but I don't think it's recognized today.

If Im not mistaken the whole Confederate Memorial Holiday came about as a result of the controversy over flying the Confederate flag above the state house. I only remember getting the day off from school from about the 7th or 8th grade on so it didnt start all that long ago

speaking of the whole flag controversy...does anyone know if the NAACP "boycott" is still going?

When MLK day was adopted as a state holiday this confederate memorial day was adopted to appease the other side.

S.C. schools work through Confederate day

By SEANNA ADCOX
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Confederate Memorial Day is a mandatory state holiday in South Carolina, but you wouldn't know it from the classrooms.

Only one of the state's 85 school districts closed Wednesday in observation of the holiday, the product of a legislative compromise that also created a permanent Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

"When it's mandatory, they should observe it," said Glenn McConnell, the president pro tem of the state Senate and a Civil War re-enactor. "When they start picking and choosing holidays, it creates controversy."

Few districts have observed the day since 2000, when legislators set aside May 10 to mark the death of Confederate commander Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

Really? I remember seeing it on an old calendar, but never "celebrated" it. Even the hard core UDC people I know don't celebrate it, but their stance is that "Confederate Memorial Day" started back after the War Between the States. It's pretty much a moot point, IMHO.

ZTAngel 05-11-2006 01:36 PM

I've lived in Florida my whole life and now in Georgia and I've never heard of it.

I had never heard about it when I was in school (I graduated HS in 96). The first rumblings I heard were when it was going through legislation.

PerfectVerse06 05-11-2006 01:59 PM

This is my first time even hearing about this holiday...

BobbyTheDon 05-11-2006 02:24 PM

This one's for North Carolina! C'mon and raise up
Take your shirt off, twist it 'round yo' hand
Spin it like a helicopter
North Carolina! C'mon and raise up
This one's for you, uh-huh, this one's for who?
Us, us, us; yes sir!

MysticCat 05-11-2006 02:41 PM

As the Wikipedia Article on Confederal Memorial Day shows, different Southern states observe it (to whatever extent they observe it) on different dates.

According to this list at infoplease (no idea how accurate it is), state offices may be closed on Confederate Memorial Day (or that state's equivalent) in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas.

Just to REALLY clarify, I've never heard of it being "celebrated", I just saw it on a few calendars.
