"Idol" champ Fantasia playing herself in TV movie
I love lifetime and plan to support this movie. What do you all think? Has it hurt her career that she came out about her illiteracy? I think she is a strong woman for doing so and her fans and family should be proud. :) :D

I enjoy Lifetime movies as well so I will definitely tune in.

I hate Lifetime--movies, programming and all-- but good luck to Fantasia!

but I digress, I do wish Fantasia well and I probably will watch her on Lifetime:D |

Plus, Lifetime doesn't have that many Original Movies highlighting Af Ams (if at all), so I'm sure I'll watch or at least DVR the movie. |

Luv Me Sum Lifetime
I am addicted to Lifetime and Lifetime Movie Network. The new one called Third Trimester, was great. I love to watch those movies just because I can have some me time. My husband talks about them, but usually he ends up sitting on the couch with me talking about the "stupid man" who got caught cheating on his wife. Can't wait for Fantasia's movie. I read her book and it was okay. Not a pulitzer prize, but good reading anyway.

AI producers upset about movie (People.com)
Although Fantasia: Life is Not a Fairy Tale – the TV movie about third-season American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino's difficult past – is not due to air on Lifetime until Aug. 19, producers of the FOX talent show reportedly are already crying foul over their depiction in the biopic.
"Certainly, under no circumstances was she ever approached to be talked out of taking part in (the show)," Idol executive producer Ken Warwick tells the New York Post, in response to the tele-movie's claim that Barrino was urged to withdraw from the competition because – as an unwed mother and high-school drop-out – she was not a suitable role model. "We knew she had a baby right from Day One, and she was always strongly tipped to win the competition because she was so good," insists Warwick, adding, "I can absolutely refute that nothing was done, or even remotely suggested to her that she shouldn't take part in the competition. It's a complete fabrication." According to the Post, the movie opens with the then-19-year-old Barrino's coming off the Idol stage and being asked to speak with producers, who confront her with Internet postings about her suitability to compete. "It's absolutely and totally untrue," Warwick responds. "I'm the executive producer, Nigel (Lythgoe) is the other executive producer and nobody – to my knowledge – would have said anything like that to her." There has been no comment from Barrino on Warwick's claims. Earlier this month, the singer told the Television Critics Association at its summer meeting that the movie – in which she plays herself – was a difficult experience for her because, among other reasons, she had to relive the rape the resulted in her having a child. Still, she said, she believes her story can inspire others. "At the end, I began to cry and I said, 'I went through all those things, but I know why I share my life.' I'm thankful that I was able to do it," she said. I wouldn't be suprised if this is the truth and they wanted Fantaisa out. The reason Lifetime is showing this movie is because she is living and making her American dream! :) |
^^^^ I believe Fantasia.
|
You know what I do too and she should tell the real story. How many times are single mothers but down by the media! Good for her, tell the story.
|
I will definitely be watching. Good luck to Fantasia and I commend her for coming out about her illiteracy.
|
Ya'll know they wanted 'Tasia out of the show. Those execs want a perfect image and they thought America wouldn't accept her. You know that's why Brandy lied about being married. Who did she think she was? A lot of women are single moms and that's nothing to be ashamed about.

I saw a preview yesterday, looks like it will be a good movie!

Watching the Fantasia movie and I'm trying to feel it out. 'Tasia's not the greatest actress, but she's good at being her. (does that make sense?) OMG, the scene at the table when she threw up!!!

Is it me or does Fantasia seem very... um.... SLOW in this movie? She seems challenged. I could just be being hyper-critical, but she is annoying me in this movie.
When dad came by and told her that without out that stomach she would be skin and bones, I was hollering WHERE? Fantasia is quite thick, honey! I wonder how Rodney and the Raper Man feel about seeing themselves portrayed in this film.... The singing was the best part of the movie. ETA: See, I knew this movie wasn't to premiere until Sunday! I thought that I had gone crazy when I clicked the channels and saw that it was on tonight. |

Why did you say everything that I was thinking? That's why no one could play her except her. She was very...blah, but the story was good. She was really brave to admit to stealing for her baby's milk and diapers. How about Loretta Devine was awesome! :D I thought Dwayne Wayne was acting a little too much and his southern accent was not believeable at all. :( LMAO about the "skin and bones" remark. :D |
I didn't like the movie at all. But then again I don't like Lifetime movies or Lifetime, except for the GG.
|
I understand that 'Tasia was playing herself and I thought she was OK. I think the mama should have been the grandma and vice versa. The mama had just look older than the grandma. And Dwayne Wayne was very extra.
The story pretty much had me almost disliking everyone except 'Taisa. Especially the boyfriend. And the scene when she was pregnant with Zion and enter the church: That reminded me SO MUCH of when Sug reunited with her father in The Color Purple (the movie). I was waiting for them to bust out with "God's Trying To Tell You Something". :p :D |

LOL I am so glad that everyone was thinking the same things I was thinking. I agree that Fantasia seemed very slow in the movie, and personally I don't think she had it all that bad growing up. I think a lot of her setbacks were issues caused by her. (not the rape) But her family lived in a nice house and a nice neighborhood, her baby's daddy was the son of a doctor personally I think she chose to struggle.
Needless to say I did NOT enjoy the movie:( ETA: Fantasia's brother (the actor who played her brother) was soo cute :) |

Really Sunday, because here in Philly it states that it's coming on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I didn't get a chance to see it yet, but I will try and check it oyut Sunday....but after the comments here I dont know....it's going to come on while my 4400 is still on, so I may not swee it until Monday. |
I agree with most of the comments made....wanted her to speak up and clearly but I realized this was her. I do believe most of the circumstances she was in was definitely "self-induced" yet, she has overcome them and for that she is definitely someone that can help future generations make better choices. It was great seeing her story.

I was really looking forward to watching this movie...
I was waiting the entire week for it, but I gotta admit, I am a little disappointed. There were alot of questions unanswered and I didn't appreciate them skipping through her life so quickly. For example, in one scene she was 6 years old, the next scene she was 16. I was like  ???? Her father (doesn't he seem a little like Ike Turner??? lol) disappeared for a few years (after the Ike-like breakdown over the music cds) and 'reappeared' when she got pregnant. Where was he during those high school years? Where were her brothers throughout most of the movie? There was one scene in the beginning with them, and they didn't show up again until the very end of the movie with the Idol audition. I also expected them to cover the issue of her 'illiteracy' a little more--maybe the last scene with her reading to her daughter would have been more meaningful.
I thought they could have did a lot more with the story, but maybe this is a way to get people to read her book (which I haven't yet). :p |
Ok, I'm watching the show, and it's got about 5 mins left. Now what I don't understand is where was the father all this time. Kadeem Hardison...aka...JoJo was a pure jackass. So did he leave the family?
Just so happens that Tasia is in the Parade magazine section from the Sunday Paper and she said that she and B, (this is what she calls Zion's father to the reporter) but she states that they aren't together, but he does have a relationship with her, and that is all that she ever wanted. Another thing is Debbie Allen had me falling out laughing as one of the contestants trying out....but something else. I was checking out the next time that this is coming on and it states Monday from 9pm-11:30pm...ummm what's with the additional 30 mins? |
yeah, everyone's favorite soror Debbie Allen had me laughing too
|
My husband and I watched it last night. Frankly, I forgot it was coming on but hubby hipped me because he watches more Lifetime than I do! I liked the movie overall.
|
I liked it too. Fantasia did great for someone with little acting lessons.
|
I liked the movie. She's an ok actress I guess. Anyone can play themselves! I wished it had more to it though. I also can't understand why she chose to hang out in the projects with the girls drinking 40's. She wasn't brought up that way. I should probably read her book.
|
I figured that all the pieces left out of the story were because she was trying not to put too much family business out there. I wonder if her ex suddenly wanted to be in the child's life after she became a star?
|
I remembered her mentioned if he did she would not let him but she would support him being with her daughter.
