Which decade was better?

80's? Or 90's?

Why?

WCUgirl 05-02-2006 02:49 PM

Do you really have to ask? The '90s!

I HATE the '80s. I hate the music, I hate the clothes, and unfortunately, both have been very trendy the last few years.

My reason for hating the '80s? Other than the songs being cheesy and the clothes being loud and obnoxious, anything from that decade reminds me of being a child. As a kid, I was a big nerd; my mom made me wear some terrible outfits and wouldn't let me pick out my own clothes.

One time I heard a radio deejay make a joke about this very subject. He commented on how the music of the '80s was all peppy and upbeat, and then the '90s came and everybody was all miserable and wanted to just kill themselves. I guess I prefer the darker, more grungy music. :)

Rudey 05-02-2006 02:52 PM

The 80s. The 90s was about people from the 80s realizing they can't spend so much money or do as many drugs.

I agree.

'90s
'90s
'90s!

BobbyTheDon 05-02-2006 02:55 PM

Listen. It's not even a contest. The 90's dominates the 80's. I don't have much time right now, but I'll quickly list a few reasons why.

I got my first BJ in the 90s
I lost my virginity in the 90s

Boyz II Men
ABC
BVD
(if you know the next words to this song, then say it)

We had Tupac talkin about not raping girls...
...Then Tupac raped a girl

Girls decided to shave their beavers (I'm just comparing porn of the 80s vs 90s)

The women of the 90s are younger, while the women of the 80s are reaching the late 30's and 40's.

33girl 05-02-2006 02:55 PM

Seinfeld was the only good thing about the 90's. Other than that, I've pretty much blotted the whole crappy decade out of my brain. The whole era was depressed and depressing and patting itself on the back for it. Yuck!

And if you actually were an adolescent in the 80's, you heard lots more than the stereotypical music and didn't wear the stereotypical clothes (as I'm sure people who were that age in the 70's, 60's and 50's will agree).

Haha, you're so predictable! :p

Further thoughts on the subject:

The men in the '80s had that big hair that made them look like women. At least you knew the sexuality of the men in the '90s simply by looking at them.

Ahhh yes, I had a lot of good things that happened in my personal life during that decade, too. I was 8-18, fun times.

Also, I remember people being more liberal during the '90s than the '80s and even now in some ways.

The internet became mainstream.

Rap and hip-hop was awesome.

Great decade to grow up in.

Optimist Prime 05-02-2006 03:13 PM

the 90's had Kurt Cobain
the 80's had Corey Hane (Hayne? Hayes? whatever)

the 90's had baggy jeans
the 80's had ripped up sweatshirts

the 90's had Carmen Electra
the 80's had that chick from Blondie

i think the aughts (00-09) have been better than both

Well I'm not a huge fan of the 80s but I just think the early 90s sucked. Look at all the movies from then. Did they even make a happy movie? I feel like I lived through the Great Depression. LA had riots, NY was just dirty, and Canada decided not to love us anymore :(

I feel like the late 90s didn't really count as part of the decade and should be moved into the 2000s.

Ditto. 80s wins hands down.

DeltAlum 05-02-2006 05:10 PM

60's

mulattogyrl 05-02-2006 05:33 PM

I have to say the 80's.

Run DMC
New Edition
good slang, like fresh, def, & the joint
pin striped Lees
the funky Salt N Pepa haircuts
Salt N Pepa
Public Enemy
KRS One
Now N Laters
Vogel's Record Store

& and the list goes on and on...

Agreed.

90s! Fresh Prince of Bel-Air! Red Hot Chili Peppers! "Flagpole Sitta"!

RedAngel 05-02-2006 06:18 PM

The 80s were better than the 90s. 90s (to me were undefined at least in music). The 80s were more fun!

Tom Earp 05-02-2006 06:26 PM

Dang, I feel Old asking about 50-60-70s!

WCUAXID 05-02-2006 07:44 PM

Like, how can you even ask this question!!
It was like sooo definitly the 80's!!
Like, gag me with a spoon for even asking this question!!
Seriously, we had Awesome music, great movies, the brat pack, day glow colors, and crazy fashion going on all over the place!
How can you dis a decade that gave us such classics as The lost Boys, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Fast Times At Ridgemont High.Madonna,Duran Duran, U2,A-HA,
Depeche Mode,and REM.
Obviously I love the 80's and everything that went with it.

Ugh! 'Cause they're all overrated!

All I have to say is:

Beverly Hills, 90210. '90s win.

MrsMcCartney 05-02-2006 10:36 PM

The 80s were 1000 times better than the 90s!!!! Styles in the 90s were soooooo boring, especially in the 1st half. I hate 90s music. All that angst and grunge and crap...

I think in order to have a true appreciation for the 80s though, you have to be old enough now to have really LIVED them. In other words, if you were born in 1983, you wouldn't have as much to go on. I was in high school in the 80s, so that frame of reference is there...you know, huge hair, blue eyeliner, shoulder pads, the whole deal.

I also really liked the 70s though. That's when I was a kid and I was just so happy then...such great music and tv too!

valkyrie 05-03-2006 12:24 PM

The 80s sucked all kinds of ass and were symbolic of all that is wrong in the world, with very few exceptions.

I liked the 70's too. Life was simpler then...

PiKA2001 05-03-2006 01:03 PM

I would have to say that the 80's and 90's were equally good to me. Both were better than the decade we're going through now. I would take women in blue eyeliner and shoulder pads over $3 a gallon gas prices and war any day.

Rudey 05-03-2006 01:09 PM

All I know is I would be really happy to live in the decade where people screamed "Disco Sucks". It would make me really happy to scream that and not have people look at me like i'm weird.

" The east coast family"

and P.S. it's BBD :D

Not everything that came out of the 90's was angst ridden and depressed, especially later in the decade when we had the resurgance of good ole' teen pop with Britney, Backstreet and all those good people. Also whoever said movies were also depressing, cluless, Pretty Woman, these were both fluffy little pieces of cinema, which did not depress me at all.
Plenty of happy stuff happened in the 90's. Besides I don't really remember that much of the 80's excpet the toys, so...

Do you wear your sunglasses at night so you can (so you can) see the light that's right before your eyes?

macallan25 05-03-2006 06:22 PM

80's wins

Two words: Talking Heads

WCUAXID 05-03-2006 07:21 PM

You people who don't like the 80's really sound very angry!!
It must be all that grunge/angry music that has infused itself to you!Seriously, how can you be mad at shoulder pads, blue eyeliner and big hair?? Granted looking back on it now not so great but better than flannel, thermals, and cords!!

I can just hear it now.....the children of Gen Y talking about their parents....."how could anyone have thought a woman in pants so low it shows her butt crack, body piercings and those goofy rubber bracelets was attractive? " Tee hee. :D

Corey HART wore sunglasses at night, Corey HAIM did a lot of drugs with Corey Feldman and starred in Lucas, THe Lost Boys, License to Drive, Dream a Little Dream, etc.

Sheesh. Get your 80s icons straight, people.

AGDee 05-03-2006 10:41 PM

About the whole shoulder pad thing...

If you didn't have shoulder pads and had big hair, then your head would look way too big for your body. The shoulder pads put it all in proportion.

Corey Haim also gained a lot of weight when he stopped doing those drugs. HEHEHE

NinjaPoodle 05-04-2006 02:36 PM
