Watermelon

Now that the summer months are drawing near, let's discuss watermelon. Specifically, do you put salt on your watermelon?

33girl 04-26-2006 01:36 PM

Yes, and on my canteloupe too. I can eat both without salt if there isn't any around, but I'd rather not.

KSigkid 04-26-2006 01:39 PM

I don't put salt on either; it just doesn't sound good to me. However, I don't really use salt all that much, so that may have something to do with it.

Glitter650 04-26-2006 01:39 PM

I've seen many people put salt on their watermelon, but I'm weird (according to most people I tell this to) and I don't like Watermelon, so I don't eat it.

mu_agd 04-26-2006 01:43 PM

I don't put salt on mine, but I do like to saturate it with vodka.

Rudey 04-26-2006 01:46 PM

I want to throw up. Why would you salt your watermelon?? Salty watermelon? Gross.

I also heard in the South, you put sugar on your strawberries and I find that to be disgusting as well.

-Rudey
--Eat them as nature intended, without additives and from a farm in Mexico.

Munchkin03 04-26-2006 01:46 PM

Salt? Never done it.

macallan25 04-26-2006 01:51 PM

I inject watermelons with vodka

That's a Southern thing? I thought it was just a craving-too-much-sugar thing. ;)

<---does it though no one else in her family does.

And I've heard of people eating peppermint with their pickles. Is that a Southern thing as well?

SmartBlondeGPhB 04-26-2006 02:00 PM

I grew up putting salt on all melon, learned it from my dad. But I stopped doing it years ago.

But this thread is making me crave it.......

I sugar my strawberries too.

(not from the South either......)

Peppermint with your pickles?!?

This is all stuff I would pay friends to eat. Hey Johnny why don't you eat some peanut butter with sardines and hot peppers and wash it down with a cup of olive oil for 5 bucks. And I bet in the South you all think that's normal too.

-Rudey

kstar 04-26-2006 02:06 PM

Salt on watermelon or cantelope makes the melon taste sweeter.

I put salt on watermelon, cantelope, apples, and grapefruit; I put sugar on strawberries.

I've actually heard older people (in their 70's, 80's now) doing a shot of olive oil before a night of heavy drinking.

I paid my friend to drink a tall glass of olive oil once. He drank it half way and had to stop to throw up. lol I take a shot of flax oil if I remember to but at least that has a hint of taste.

It's supposed to protect you from every disease, help you cut fat, help you jump over tall buildings, and give you improved memory. It's probably just nothing but, if I remember, I just take a shot of it or put it in a shake. I mean it's cold from the fridge and tastes sorta nutty I think so it's not as bad as you think.

When we were kids, my friends used to do that. They said it kept their breath from stinking. I never told them that it didnt work.

Tom Earp 04-26-2006 03:37 PM

Why dont they get a Water Melon with No damn seeds like cantalope where You dish the seeds out?

Not a salt freak. Now Salt with Tokillya is a different matter!

Oh a Juiced Water Mellon, Yea! Clear Booze will kill You but make You feel good while it does!:D

dekeguy 04-26-2006 04:35 PM

When I was growing up my folks and their adult friends told me that watermellon is best by itself but if the melon is rather tasteless, as sometimes happens, then a light sprinkle of salt will bring out flavor and sweetness. I thought it sounded crazy but tried it with a particularly flat tasting melon and it actually substantially improved the taste. Weird. I wouldn't salt a good melon but if the one you have is just so-so a small sprinkle of salt really works (unless you have another good tasting melon).

Now, as to vodka, OK but light rum works very well also. I prefer my vodka as a very dry martini with an anchovy olive.

You are making me crave strawberry shortcake smothered in whipped cream. Mmmmm :)

As for the watermelon, I've always put salt on it. I agree with kstar who says it makes it taste sweeter!

While we're on the subject of watermelon, I have a small phobia about eating any of the white part down by the rind because my grandmother always said it gives you the stutchkies (which is Polish for the runs).

I also add sugar and butter to my plain white rice. :)

Yeah, a lot of health stuff.

But, some of the girls on facebook have discovered that it can do something else.

Chew enough flaxseed, and it will make you HORNAAAAAAY!

Dionysus 04-26-2006 04:52 PM

I thought putting sugar on strawberries was a standard thing.

One of my grandmothers do that. She puts sugar on everything (even stuff like mac and cheese), nevertheless.

I used to add butter and soy sauce to white rice when I was little. Thinking about it now makes me gag.

Who ever said YOU Have Grown Up Yet?;)

Now with Natural Strawberrys, they are Tart, ergo use a little sugar!

Now when making Strawberry Daqueries, use frozen and booze.:D

CT4, You use home made whip cream on water mellon?

Oh, Never mind Stawberrys.

When Doing Strawberry Shork Cake, what happened to the Home Made and not the store bought crap?

valkyrie 04-26-2006 05:02 PM

Salt on melon? I've never heard of such a thing.

Strawberries are really good if you cut off the stems, cut them in half, put them in a big bowl and sprinkle sugar over them, and store in the fridge for a day or so until you get yummy sweet strawberries and juice -- SO GOOD over vanilla ice cream.

dekeguy 04-26-2006 05:15 PM

Hay Tom,
With reference to your last comment, do you remember the movie Chariots of Fire? When the Hall Porter at Cambridge refers to Abrahams as "Sonny", he replys "I ceased being referred to as sonny when I took up the King's commission". I figure that when I took up my country's commission and commanded American troops in combat the same concept would apply. So, yes, I would say that I have grown up and earned my degree from the well known school of hard knocks, but I am also willing to ask for and gratefully accept advice from those with more experience. To that point I refer you to my latest 'What's for Dinner" post where I ask you for info on whether I have a cigar wrapper description right or not.

But other than that, how have you been? I am jetlagged to the max and in desperate need of strong coffee. About 20 hours of sleep and maybe I can make some sense, but I still say that a little salt makes a blah melon taste better.

Tom Earp 04-26-2006 05:38 PM

"Hay" Tom, Hoy Boy can understand that!;)

Absoultyly Remember The Movie!

The Problem with Jet Lagging is not drinking enough! Correct?;)

Ah A Cigar Wrapper, Yes and it was a little suspect of Course!

But a Cigar is Like a Women, always Suspect!:D

Glitter650 04-26-2006 05:53 PM

I totally sugar strawberries if they are going to go on shortcake or something... and if I'm just eating them I'll sugar them if they are sour. I enjoy soaking Pineapple in Malibu too ... =)

ladygreek 04-26-2006 05:57 PM

As someone said putting a litle salt on melons that aren't very sweet improves the flavor.

Strawberries--dip first in sour cream, then in brown sugar--yummy.

Tom Earp 04-26-2006 06:25 PM

I cannot tell You are are sick Person!

In the eye of the BeHolder!:)

That's the first I've heard of that, but it sounds REALLY good.

How does making something salty make it taste sweeter?

I mean if I pour salt in my coke at lunch, it'll taste sweeter?

That's exactly how we do our strawberries too!

PinkRose1098 04-27-2006 12:13 PM

I put salt on my watermelon. If it's fresh and really ripe, it doens't need it but those you get at the very begining and end of the season need it.
I also put salt on my Granny Smith apples. That I learned from my dad. It's abou the only way I like to eat them.
As far as strawberries go, put as much sugar on them as possible and pop them in the fridge. I love eating them with all the juice and them whipped cream (the canned stuff please). Come to think of it, I actually like a little strawberry with my whipped cream in the summer. But I love eating the really tart, firm strawberries with out anything on them.
I also love eating white rice with plenty of sugar and butter. That I've been doing for as long a I can remember.

Salt is a flavor enhancer. The idea is not to put so much on that it tastes salty, jut enough to bring out the natural flavor. :D

Same reason many people put salt in their beer.
