How do you view those who can't step?

This is just my question of the day... The reason that I ask this is because I come from a family who taught me how to step and had me placed in clubs and on step teams. So to me, it's very important. Anyway, I know a gentleman who can't train to save his life and he struggles a lot when it comes to stepping and strolling. He just can't keep a rhythmn. From an outside point of view, how would you view him? From my view point, it doesn't bother me but I watch as it bothers him and others around him. I guess that I never really gave it much thought because I've never been on the other side of the spectrum or even gave it much thought till now. Anyway, what's your feedback?

I know that this question is really superficial, but I'm interested in knowing whether or not if being able to step or stroll validates a brother as a "bruh".

RBL 04-24-2006 01:49 PM

"Those who can step, those who can't step away"- Whitley (A Different World)... that was the first thing that popped in my head...lol

ShamikaT 04-24-2006 01:57 PM

There are NICCAS who join BGLOs and don't know how to dance already?

SMH :(

This is the brother who gets to hold the props for the step show! ;)

SKEEphistAKAte 04-24-2006 03:03 PM

I wouldn't think of him any differently. Everyone wasn't blessed with rhythm. Like mccoyred said, let him hold props or be the voiceover guy. LOL. Maybe give him some remedial stroll lessons at the house. Don't wait until you are at a party to try to teach him how to Ape Walk, lol. That is too much pressure, people watching,etc...if he is already handicapped in that area it would just make him more nervous. Teach him a few things at the house, tell him to practice at home and try it out at the next party.

Professor 04-24-2006 03:56 PM

who cares - - - especially at the grad chapter.

SKEEphistAKAte 04-24-2006 03:59 PM

^^ In Tampa, all of our (D9) graduate chapters have step teams. Our teams step and stroll at our annual NPHC Greek Picnic and some do exhibitions at our regional conventions.

sphinxpoet 04-24-2006 04:01 PM

When were we founded for stepping and strolling?

SKEEphistAKAte 04-24-2006 04:05 PM

^^
I was about to say "well he said that this question was superficial" but then he continued "I'm interested in knowing whether or not if being able to step or stroll validates a brother as a "bruh"." ...validating the depth of someone's realness doesn't sound superficial to me... that's a whole other discussion that I clearly missed the first time I read his post.... on that note...
Peace and I'm out.

You know, those are my sentiments... I guess he's mad because he doesn't feel as unified. I told him today that it's not about that. As long as you are holding the name high I could care less. Real bruhs are out there on the community service projects, raising money, promoting good causes, and paying their dues.

PhrozenGenius 04-24-2006 04:20 PM

Put him on the skit or the prop team, ban him from strolling. Make him the "DJ bruh" that tells the DJ when to play certain songs during the shows. Maybe you could WORK WITH HIM on his train, blades, snake, and other different small particulars that make a good "Alpha" Stepper.

I personally don't care if a bruh can step, as long as he's a good brother. I think we all feel that way.

You all are too funny!

n4sir5 04-25-2006 12:44 AM

Xcell in another area!

This is all about perspective. Lots of folks who cannot step... It is not the end of the world....Stepping is a part of who we are. Each member of each line/cluster/whatever have individual...unique parts that made the whole.

Clown, Brain, Lazya$$, Workaholic, Booksmart, Streesmart, Smarta$$, Smooth-Talker, Tongue-tied....the Divine 9 runs the gamut of variety...

Can't Step? Then he can participate in events like the March of Dimes WalkAmerica or other National Programs. My Pink and Green Goddess gave birth to a future Sphinxman at the end of March... 2 pounds, 1 ounce. He is now 2 pounds 8 ounces and gaining...I march for him until he grows into his boots; I walk for all the other folks in similar situations.

Perspective dictates that there are other areas that need participation as well....don't dwell on can't, excercise WILL!

My 7 cents worth.

N4SIR5 is out!

I would view that guy simply as a guy that can not step....nothing more, nothing less! I amnot the best, but I can hold my own. If somebody can't step then so what! Sorors that can't step are sorors that can't step, bottom line they are my sorors!

Alpha wouldn't do it like that. They would need more proof, a reason, and a whole lot of multisyllabic words so that it sounded intelligent.

Dear Brother Doe:

Due to the horrendous nature of your performance last week in the Boys and Girls Club Community Service Project, the Executive Board of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated feels obligated to let you know that your services are no longer required within the bonds of this fraternity.
Our corporate partners and allies have on numerous occasions commented on the sheer lack of precision, rhythm, and moxy displayed during your ubiquitous step performances.
It has also come to the attention of the brethren that you have become an embarassment to the name of Alpha by consistently missing your cues on stage, your lack of stamina, and we won't even go into the notorious "falling off stage" incident. Many within your chapter, and since the advent of youtube, across the nation have had to defend your actions and general lack of hand-eye-foot coordination.
Please understand how tough a decision this was to make. With the general lack of interest in community service, a decline in the understanding of a brotherhood dynamic, and an increase in hazing incidents STEPPING IS ALL WE HAVE LEFT. Since the release of Stomp The Yard the proverbial bar has been raised and we simply can't afford to have you stinking up the stage like that.
You have every right to appeal, but it has already been documented and established that frankly...you suck...as a human...in real life. Plus nobody likes a whiner.
Please feel free to contribute to the MLK Fund, Project Alpha, Go to High School/Go to College, and our various other initiatives. Thank you for making this centennial year our greatest ever.

Sincerely,
The Management

First of All, Steppers of All, We Shall Transcend All
