Expansion at St. Louis U
I know that SLU is up for expansion and I heard that there were presentations, but as I'm not on campus anymore, I haven't heard any details.
Anyone have anything to add? Currently on campus: Alpha Delta Pi Gamma Phi Beta Delta Gamma Kappa Delta Sigma Kappa ETA: Ok, looked at an old post and saw that Pi Phis, ZTAs and KKGs were suppose to be presenting. My friends knows that Pi Phis did, and thought that DZ was one of them, but wasn't sure, so if anyone has more info let me know. On another note, the quad is covered with chalking about DST coming to campus. I believe there's a city-wide chapter already, and or a chapte at WashU in St. Louis, but I've never seen their letters on campus before. SGR advertises for events here, though they're never held on campus, and I've seen AKA jackets, but never DST, so I'm guessing this is a new push... Anyway, any details about any of that would be great! :) |
how exciting. please keep us posted!
|
All I've heard at work [I work in the Student Life Office] is that they're choosing between pi phi, zta, and kkg...as you said. I have no clue whats going on with the stuff in the quad though...
|
Was I right that it was DST? I was on my way to formal when I saw it, and I was focused on that high heels power walk that you do when you're worried about missing the bus (that was running late anyway of course)
|
All of the NPHC Sororities/Fraternities in St. Louis are city-wide. My guess is that DST is hoping to attract more SLU women. I know that AKA has a lot of SLU women currently, but I have no idea how large any of the city-wide chapters are or how many come from SLU v. Wash U.
All I know that they're all city-wide. Not much info. for you, but better than nothing. |
NPHC members in St. Louis come from a variety of schools: SLU, Wash U, UMSL, Harris-Stowe, etc. When the local NPHC chapters (including ours at SIUE) publicize events, they often do so at multiple campuses.
|
I knew the chapters were city-wide. The only real advertisements on campus are for Sigma Gamma Rho, though I see AKA jackets. This is a first for chalking on campus as well as seeing DST's letters. I was more curious than anything, and I suspected, as was clarified, that they're looking to attract more participation (and potentially members) from SLU students.
I still want details!! :) |
It just says something about improv, so I'm assuming its just advertising an event.
|
Are there any updates?
|
Not much from the SLU side.
I guess they haven't presented yet. Word on campus was during senior week (after finals, before graduation) there would be presentations from 5:30 to 6:30 with all welcome to attend. So I suspect we won't know anything more until then. I'm hoping some ladies from the presenters side will be on here and share! Again it's KKG, ZTA and Pi Phi... :) |
I was told the presentations are week of 5/15.

Just got news that Zeta Tau Alpha has been chosen as the new sorority on campus for fall 2007
|
that is so neat!!thanks for the update.
|
That's so exciting! I love great expansion news!:D
|
YAY for ZTA!
(Shortly followed by a tiny boo because you are now our rivals ;) ) This really is awesome though. Quota has been through the roof and this will help bring it down a bit. /really tiny, I swear! |
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited!
|
it's all good, drolefille!! we are joining some terrific groups!!
what is the average chapter size? are there houses, lodges or chapter suites? would you tell us a little about the campus? |
I'll give you what I can and perhaps melsigkap can update what has either changed this past semester or what I get wrong.;)
St. Louis University is a Jesuit school with about 4000 or so undergrads. Greek life isn't huge on campus, but those who are greek go pretty hard. Quotas have been 40-50 over the past few years and chapter sizes range from 100-160 but it depends on the chapter and the year. There are 13 fraternities and 5 (now 6) sororities (no locals) The fraternities range from... um.. big to tiny. Some of the smaller ones have like 8 guys, the larger have 100 or so. (approximation) The five sororities are ADPi, GPhiB, DG, KD, and SK Delta Gamma is the current youngest chapter on campus with 5 full years under their belt. There are no sorority houses (and only one fraternity house). There is a Greek dorm where each sorority and fraternity (not all of the guys participate) get a wing or some other arrangement of rooms. The RAs are all Greek as is the housing coordinator for the building. Most people live in the dorm for their sophomore year and perhaps junior year. (Freshmen have specific housing) After that they live in on or off campus apartments, often with their sisters. All chapters have been offered space in DeMattias for a chapter room (though I don't know where they'll add another one) however they're too small for actual chapter meetings. We've had chapter in the lecture halls and auditoriums as well as meeting rooms in the Student Center and Administrative buildings. Major Greek Events on campus include: Greek Week SLUperbowl - powderpuff football run by SPhiE - we all play for keeps Derby Days Also each sorority has a philanthropy week of events that the fraternities get involved in (and depending on the events the others sororities too) Phew... any other questions? |

If you say each of the 5 sorority houses is at 100 (on the low side according to you) that's 500 for them and if you say there are the same number of men in fraternities (500 - which is an average of 38 per house) you get 25% of the campus that's greek and that's a huge %. And I'm probably low......... |
This is probably true... I'm going to dig for the numbers if I can find them on SLU's webpage somewhere. It is bigger than I give it credit for, but you don't have to be Greek to be cool or party or whatever.
/I'm so unarticulate today ETA: I'd forgotten how much SLU's website sucks. And frankly I'm not a fan of Panhel's either. So, no actual numbers available. /mildly bitter former webmaster |
I didn't say anything about being cool or partying, I simply pointed out that the greek system is quite large relative to a lot of other campuses.
Having 25% of the student body going greek makes is quite huge. Most campuses are happy to get into the double digits in terms of % of the student body. |
thank you drolefille!

I wish I could remember the percentage of greeks...I don't think it has hit 20% yet but it's near there.
Greek life is getting more and more popular at SLU, and I've heard numbers reflecting that but don't know exactly what they are, because web stuff never seems updated. Basically, we're expecting an insane recruitment this fall, which is pretty exciting. And yup, GPhi is pretty big at SLU. |
Congratulations to ZTA!!
I only wish more campuses had at least a 25% greek population! Ours was tiny compared to that!! |

Big recruitment= cool... although I'm hoping pledge class sizes actually go down (and they will for one year because ZTA gets a larger quota and the rest of us will get a smaller one for their first year) I wouldn't trade a single one of my sisters, but from a practical point of view, smaller class sizes would be better! Melsigkap: let me know if you can find anything on SLU or Panhel's website... panhel's particularly is in shambles |
I was :::thisclose::: to going to SLU instead of Valpo, and Valpo is about 4000 students and I know SLU is bigger. Website says 11,800, I don't know how much of that is undergrad vs grad students, but I'd guess they have about 7000 undergrads. My impression was the Greek Life wasn't huge, especially compared to other schools I looked at like Purdue, but the Greeks were definitely a presence and made themselves visible. I know that the Kappa Delta chapter there is considered one of our more outstanding chapters, they receive a lot of awards. Congrats to ZTA :)
