Penn State Names Nine "Chapters of Excellence"
 

Nine chapters at Penn State's main campus were recognized as "Chapters of Excellence" at a ceremony this past weekend:

NPHC: Kappa Alpha Psi, Zeta Phi Beta

NPC: Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Omicron Pi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Zeta Tau Alpha

IFC: Acacia, Beta SIgma Beta, Sigma Phi Epsilon

Sigh. I bet it's nice to attend a state-related Pennsylvania school that actually acknowledges the fact that, yes, it has a greek system.

Pitt and Penn State are two of the three state-related schools in Pennsylvania and it's day and night as far as how greeks are treated. Apparently, Penn State prides itself on its greek system while at Pitt we were treated as more of the proverbial red-headed stepchild.

Exactly. Only I'd add "two-headed stepchild".

But congratulations to the "Chapters of Excellence"! On a campus with such a large number of chapters, this has to be quite an honor!

Anyone give a little background on Beta Sigma Beta? I can't find anything on them online, and their link through the PSU just says "we're working on it!". Are they local? Regional? What's the craic?

Isn't Penn State the school where they had the landmark study (back in the 40s or so) that was all, "women who join sororities are happier and do better in school than independent women"? I remember reading about it in my sociology class in HS.

Aw, well if it makes you feel any better, we're all up to our eyeballs in debt.

I invite you to go to one of the 16 or so Pennsylvania State Schools in the State System of Higher Education and you'll be happy with Pitt :) What about it 33?

yeah, for real. At least at Pitt they haven't kicked you out of the sorority dorm yet!

I think for some reason a lot of people think Penn State is cheaper than it is...it's not. Plus I think at Pitt a lot of people take into account the fact that you'll be living in a major city and factor that as a cost - if they don't think they can afford it they don't go.

If you don't mind me asking how much is tuition?

According to US News & World Report:

Penn State Tuition:
$9,822 in state
$19,734 out of state

Pitt Tuition:
$11,436 in state
$20,784 out of state

Both of which, compared to private schools, really aren't all that bad. Pitt gives out a ton of scholarship money, I don't know about Penn State.

I think Penn State gives out a lot of scholarship money but since there's so many more students, there are a lot of students that don't get any scholarship money. When I was a high school senior applying to schools, Pitt offered me a full tuition scholarship because I had a pretty good high school transcript (good GPA, good SAT scores, in the top 5% of my graduating class). However, all of that wasn't good enough to get a scholarship from Penn State.

kind of a sidenote: I believe Penn State gives full scholarships to all of its athletes. I was wondering if anyone knows if Pitt does this too?

on another sidenote: I believe Pitt gives more to the children of its faculty/staff. My freshmen year, I went to Pitt and one of my friends was roommates with the daughter of an assistant football coach. If I remember correctly, she had a full scholarship (tuition, room/board). However, at Penn State, I believe children of faculty/staff still have to pay 10% of normal tuition and room/board.

Actually compared to other states' public universities, those two are a great price!

$11,436 in state?!?!?! :eek: I'm showing my age here, but I broke out my bill from first semester of my freshman year and tuition was $908.00 and room and board for a double in Holland Hall was $960.00.

Pennsylvania public schools seem to be pretty pricey, IMO. The University of Virginia is less than 8K in state, the University of Maryland is around $7,300 and the University of Delaware is around $6,600. I just picked these three schools to compare since they're near me.

Price is price. It's not some arbitrary ranking based on some random formula by US News. They really can't fudge on it.
